Philippa: good luck with your checkup this week. I had my three-month follow-up with my medical oncologist last week. Everything was good, including the tumor markers. This Friday I have my six-month breast ultrasound and mammogram. I'm very anxious about that. A friend who had a mastectomy 31 years ago tells me that the anxiety surrounding mammograms has never gone away for her.

JoJo: you do look beautiful in your new avatar. You're like a madonna (not the singing one!).

Suzi and Shelby: you are two strong women to be handling divorces on top of everything else you've gone through in the last year. Good luck to you both.

I decided this week that I would sort out all my bc-related paperwork and put it into order. I want to create a folder with all my test reports, etc. and references to where to locate pathology slides, mammogram film, etc. I think this will be a good way for me to wrap up this strange year and also if I need the records down the road (and of course hoping I never do) then I'll be able to locate them easily. Does anyone have any tips for filing their bc records efficiently? I'm not sure whether to just put them all into a folder chronologically or to sort them by treatment phases - biopsies, lumpectomy, chemo, rads. At the beginning of this process last year, I started scanning everything and puttting them all into a single PDF files but since they were mostly image files, that file became too big and unwieldy. My plan was to have everything in one PDF file on a USB stick.

Philippa ~ wishing you luck at your check up.  I am sure all will be fine.

Mary ~ glad to hear all went well at your checkup.  Hoping all goes just fine and you get a good report on your mammo/ultrasound.  I will send up good thoughts for you on Friday.

Shelby ~ so sorry to hear of your divorce, but you sound strong and in a good place.  I love what your friend said about someone to hold your hand for a bit.  And this line of yours:

To everyone - I hope your lives are going along smoothly and that cancer can take a backseat to more important aspects of living.  AMEN to that !!!

Suzi, JOJO (looking good)  Mary, Michele, all of you great ladies.  I am so thankful we are all here and getting on with life.

    :)

    Hi everyone

Just checking in after my first 3 month review.  Apparently the CEA marker is a bit elevated.  So I am just trying to understand it a bit.  The Onc said he wants to keep an eye on it and will run it again in 3 months.  The surgeon was also not overly concerned about it.  I am a worrier by nature though and naturally trying to find out more.....  any insights (ie instant guarantees that this is not recurrence or progression) or experiences?

Hi Philippa: I was back to see my oncologist last week also. I asked how long more she would be following me and she implied that she is here to stay. She said since I'm on Tamoxifen, she would have to monitor me for the next five years anyway. I asked whether she would be doing anything to check for a recurrence and she said no scans, only tumor markers. And about tumor markers she said they are not all that reliable anyway and there are mixed opinions on how useful they are. That didn't give me a rush of confidence.

I got my bloodwork results over the weekend. I was able to check it online. Everything was within the normal range, including the tumor markers. I was also able to look back and see the prior results for comparative purposes. In my case the readings for the tumor markers have gone up and down, although they've never gone outside the normal range. So P, if yours are only slightly elevated, I'm guessing the onc will just keep an eye on them and retest again soon.

I was back for my six-month mammo today. The Rx was for a mammo of the left breast and a bilateral ultrasound. I questioned whether the right breast should be mammo'd too as the last time it was done was April 2009 at the beginning of this whole bc story. The tech checked with the radiologist who said they would do the right breast also. I could see tech paying a lot of attention to something she was seeing and when she called me back in for another couple of images, I really started to panic. Next I went for the ultrasound. Then the doctor came in and did a breast exam and reviewed the ultrasound images. She told me they found something suspicious in my right breast. The area is centered around a clip marking the site of an MRI-guided biopsy that I had in June 2009. The pathology came back benign at the time. She said it might be scar tissue from the biopsy but the only way to know for sure if to biopsy the area again. So I'm scheduled to have an u/s guided biopsy on Tuesday. I keep telling myself that it's too soon to see a new cancer appearing. Another little voice says maybe it was there all the time and they missed it the last time they biopsied the area.

Mary, take a deep breath, and don't panic.  Don't let your mind go to the dark side.  It could just be scar tissue like the doc said.  Thank goodness you don't have to wait to long..keep us posted.  we will keep you in our prayers.Kiss

Thanks all. I'm trying to put yesterday's mammo result out of my mind until I need to think of it again on Tuesday. I'm much more calm than when I had to go for my first biopsy last year. At least this time I know what the procedure will be like.

Onty: I hope you're doing well. Haven't seen you post much lately which I take to be a good sign.

Michelle: Thanks. Yes, I'm glad I only have to wait until Tuesday for the biopsy and the doctor said they should have the pathology result the following afternoon (Wednesday).

Shelby, I love your hair. Sometime I wish the old avatars were still available so we could see everyone's progress. The short hair really suits you.

Alicia, would love to see your new haircut too. I know you had a scare recently too with the back pain. Glad to see that you got a good report on that.

I suppose there will always be something for use to worry about as we go on with our lives, but that's all we can do is live our lives as best we can.

Sending you warm hugs and wishes for the biopsy, and the results we all want you to hear.
As top worry queen I know how the mind tussles with these blips, and the fact we are monitored so regularly brings a mix of worry with reassurance.  I'm focusing on the reassurance for you - big hugs, Philippa

My best friend had a mammo with me a couple of weeks ago - she was there to be my support for the 1-year mammo, plus she was due for hers.  She got a call to return for a follow-up as they saw something they wanted to look at better.  I told her that it's most likely nothing, and that if it had been something very suspicious, they would have kept her after the mammo for an u/s.  Of course, my MIND was going different places, with fear and uncertainty for her.  I can only hope that what I told her is right!  Please send positive thoughts her way...

Thanks for the hair compliment, Mary!  I'm considering coloring my hair, just for something different.  This darker color is hard to get used to, and it's curly - quite a change from my stick-straight, light brown hair of the pre-chemo days!  My rads tech, who saw me when I was bald and saw my hair growth progress through treatment, said that she had imagined me as a redhead.  Maybe it was my personality?  LOL

    Have a great day, ladies!

    Peace,

    Shelby

Thanks Suzi. I got back from having the biopsy done. The doctor was very nice and explained everything. She took seven samples. Hopefully that will be enough to tell one way or the other. I go back for followup tomorrow and to get the results.

Pheeeeeeeeew! It turned out to be scar tissue, which was the result of a very messy MRI-guided biopsy that I had last year. Such a relief!

Thanks for all your thoughts and prayers.

I'm so happy for me too. I've been a pig this evening. Isn't it funny how we (I) can find any excuse to overindulge in food -- whether it's good news or bad news. I rounded out my piggishness with two Carvel sundaes. Ah, tomorrow is another day. Back to walking and trying to eat right.
