Great news Jane!
-
Jane - Your good news is such a relief! Now here's an amusing story about the isotope seeds. The elderly father of a friend of mine was being treated for prostate cancer with the isotope seeds, but he somehow got the idea that they were marijuana seeds. He told every one he was growing a marijuana plant out of his a--. What an image.

Woo Hoo Jane!!!!
Patty....that is funny.
-
Jane- I am very happy to hear your news. I am keeping your whole family in my prayers.
Trying to keep up with all the posts but not doing such a good job. Summer is almost gone and I still am wondering where all the down time went. Just spent 4 days in Virginia looking at colleges with my son. I see my PS on Wed. schedule my nipple surgery. I will then have the tattoo and finally be done.
Take care and THINK POSITIVE
Catherine

Jane - whoo hoo, great news!!! I am so happy for you and your daughter. Now just to get your DH sorted and all will be well!

Patty I agree about the 'cancer free' idea - for a while I was living with the thought "How can I tell if the cancer is gone?" But now I just figure I may as well live as if I know it has. no one can prove either way so I may as well enjoy life again. I am mainly doing OK with this approach - sometimes the fear comes sneaking back, but mostly I can put my cancer free face to the world.
BarbT - happy holidays and all the best for your surgery . Great idea to have a holiday BEFORE surgery!
-
Jane, I'm so happy for you.... hang in there girl....sun has to shine from behind that cloud someday.
I wrecked my motorcycle last Sunday. Laid up at home with 9 stitches in my face and a dislocated knee LOL I wasnt too worried about me in the ER, but my bike, ugh..... it'll need fixed. Poor Victoria Vulcan. She was a great bike. The biggest worry was that my scarf was not on my head and everyone was seeing me bald. When they finally decided I had not broken my neck and let me off the backboard, they had to take the tape off my head that was holding me to the board. I told them "not a hair, not even a stubbly hair, better come out on that tape."
egads, the things we find important. LOL
-
Just had a moment to catch up...boy!
Vickilynn: Your hair looks great! At least it's flat...I have major curl going on even after two haircuts. Would love to meet you when you go to Yosemite next month. I have climbed Half Dome three times and LOVE Yosemite. We could drive up and meet you for the day...Let me know.
Pamelajo: As I recall, you said that you were really thin before treatment. It will I think take all of us a while to get back to normal...eating right, exercise...taking care of us and making us a priority. I feel for you regarding your husband not helping out...I am not married, but my boyfriend has been phenomenal...way more help, supportive and understanding than the ex-rat bastard would've been.
Jane: So good to hear the news of your daughter's tests. Sigh! Sending prayers your way for your DH.
I am up for the virtual reunion...How about cabernet franc from the Raymond Burr Winery???
Oh...and yes, Zilch is played with 6 dice and my boyfriend and I play almost every night...I usually win, but lately he has been beating me a game or two every week.
Hope that you all are having a good week. It is nice to not be rushing from doctor to doctor and I am just looking forward to reconstruction...hopefully sometime in October.
Kim
-
Pamelajo! Here you go through all this treatment only to maim yourself on a motorcycle? I'm so glad you are still among us...stitches and a dislocated knee aside. What are we going to do with you? Stay on the sofa and get well already!
Here's something for you ladies to give me your thoughts on:
Several people in the wedding business here have started a charitable organization to raise funds for cancer survivors, particularly women living with stage IV BC. It's a lovely idea and the people who started it are really great. Today I got a call from one of the founders of the organization about a party they are holding next week. People in wedding related businesses are donating their services (catering, decor, drinks, Djs, etc). Guests include hundreds of people in the wedding business and some cancer survivors. The party is designed to raise money via a silent auction. Cancer survivors will also speak to the group. So far so good.
Here's where it went bad. They have rented a "money machine". This is a phone booth sized glass cabinet into which you put money. Someone then goes inside, you turn on blowers, and the person inside tries to catch as much of the flying money as possible. At the party they plan to put $1,000 in small bills in the money machine, then invite a cancer survivor inside and let her catch as much as she can.
Upon hearing this I immediately had this image of a sick exhausted bald person scrambling around to catch flying money while a bunch of enthusiastic do-gooders cheer her on. The image made me feel ill. Do we not suffer sufficient indignities just getting through treatment? Will this "cancer survivor" feel loved, supported and celebrated...or like a spectacle in a side show?
I didn't say anything on the phone. But now I'm thinking I should call this good-hearted but misguided guy back and tell him I don't think this money machine is a good idea at all. Or, am I just totally challenged in the "fun" department and taking this the wrong way. Would any of you get into this machine at this party? Your thoughts please.
Patty
Note: The guy called me because I'm in the wedding industry. He has no idea I'm also a cancer survivor.
-
Patty - Why don't you just suggest he GIVE the woman (or man) the $1,000.!!! No way would I get in that booth. Humiliating enough already to be "paraded" as a survivor and then grabbing money as if we are totally desperate... OK, sometimes we FEEL that way, but I think you'd better call him.
Pamela - ouch.
Kim- certainly - how about a case of Raymond Burr wine... Will let you know about Yosemite as the time nears.
Catherine - so glad you're near the end.
Jane - hang in there
I ordered a swimsuit online with the pocket for my fake boob and was nervous about it. But I really like it. Going to work well. I love to swim and haven't for the last year because I was nervous about it all... But I found out the silicone works fine in water and the pocket is great and the swimsuit is designed especially for mast. with higher armpits and a bit higher in front to help hide scars. www.swimsuitsforall.com I got mine on sale - top and skirt separate so I can wear my shorts with it instead. Colorful. Love it. Can't wait to swim in it.
-
Vickilynn- thanks for the link. Glad you got a suit you like.
Jane I am still doing a happy dance for you.
Pamela what the heck girl? Are you trying to dance with fate repeatedly. I'm with Patty stay on the sofa and chill.
Patty- I have to admit as I was reading your post I had the very same image pop into my head, before I got to your description. I would call the guy back and say maybe the money would be better spent making a gift bag/basket of some sort for the survivors who speak. Telling him you are a survivor may lend some credibility.
Kim, Any wine you want to bring is fine with me. I love great wine and great food. Have fun on your trip.
So couple things...
Went to my regular doc yesterday, and I have gained two pounds, arghhh, and he prescribed me some low dose effexor to control my hot flashes, i am a little anxiousabout taking it, I also want to talk to my onc see if he approves of it and the dosage too. I have heard that it can sometimes make you nauseous at first and taking it at a half dose, or every other day can help...I don't know any advise?
Doc also prescribed a cream for my itchy boobs (but one is worse than the other), which with the heat wave that area of my body, even under my arm is just really agitated. He said to also use AD with Zinc diaper rash cream too, that all my hot flashes combined with a bra have given me a heat rash of sorts. It is annoying and I hope this does the trick and it goes a way soon.
Love and hugs

Pamela - So I shared your story about the bike wreck with my husband and his comment was: "Did you tell her we had a Vulcan?" He was very sympathetic for the bike --- unlike me who just could feel the cuts and bruises! He had to sell his bike because he had foot problems and couldn't balance any more, but he really loved that bike.
Hope you're getting past that 3rd day of worse pain.
-
Ladies, thanks for gut checking my reaction to the money machine. I guess I better call the guy.
Barbara - Here's a potential silver lining for the initial SE of Effexor: Nausea = Less interested in food = bye bye extra 2 pounds. (Kidding, of course) I don't have any experience with Effexor but it seems to be fairly routinely prescribed for hot flashes. If it stops those, which seem to be contributing to your itchy rash, it seems like a win-win. Heck, 1 in 10 Americans are artificially happy via antidepressants...why not you?

Hello SOSisters..... today I went to the dentist and had my teeth cleaned. Thinking on the way home how I couldn't do that when I was doing chemo. Who would think you be thankful for being able to go to the dentist?
Vickilynn - so I was thinking if all the NE and South ladies fly to Atlanta, we can all sit in 1st class and party while we fly to San Franciso to meet everyone else in our sisterhood. We can all meet in SF and get on the plane to Hawaii - 1st class all the way. I'm so wanting to have this virtual reunion! Several limo's could meet us and sweept us off to our luxury resort. Glad you found a bathing suit you are comfortable with, I haven't been in a bathing suit in years!
Patty - I love the marijuna seed story! I was cracking up. DH seems okay with his diagnosis, doing the manly thing and not talking much unless I bring it up. If I was the cancer survivor at the event I would not get in the phone booth. In fact it would piss me off (pardon my language) to be asked to do that. Please call your friend if you haven't already!
BarbAnne - my onc has also offered to write an rx for Effexor for hot flashes not to mention it might help me sleep. I have said no each time because I just don't want to take another pill. I go back to the onc on Friday, know he will put me back on Famera. I felt better for a while but the pain in heel and hands came back, guess I can't blame the pill and the hot flashes certainly never got any better. If you decide to try the Effexor you will have to let me know how it goes, if it helps I may say yes yet. Since you are doing happy dance and I like to dance, maybe we need to have music at our resort so when we have a few glasses of Kim's wine we can all get up and dance?
Catherine - How did the appointment go? When will your surgery be? Did you pick out a college? It sounds like you have had a very very busy summer!
Neece - it was great news! I have also gone with the attitude what cancer? The problem is that just when you think you have it all under control then there is that niggling little pain or bump or lump and then you immediately revet to what if? But I'm so much better than I used to be that maybe time does heal all wounds!
Pamelajo - good grief! I am so glad you are okay, How is the knee? Where was DH? Were you trying to run over him? Did you get your scarf back? Please take it easy, how are you going to get to the reunion if you are all laid up?
Kim - looking forward to the wine and you can teach us all how to play Zilch. Will we play better after a few glases of wine? Will we have to count in our heads? I know what you mean about going to the doctor. On Friday I have appt with rad dr for checkup, onc for checkup and herceptin txt. But only 1 more herceptin after that and rad and onc probably will not be for 3 months after that.
Well sisters, take care. Post when you have a moment. Thoughts and prayers are with you.
Jane
-
OK I love Jane's plans for the reunion. Let's hire musicians... and play Zilch (or Greed as we call it) and Dance and hug a lot. Lots of appetizers - little munchies - to eat... like maybe a big buffet with fresh pineapple and gourmet cheeses and chocolate fondue to dip our fruit in... And as much wine or wine coolers as we want, but nobody can get tipsy - since it's virtual, that should be OK.
Neece will have to meet us in Hawaii.
And Pamela may have to be wheelchaired to the plane, but we'll get her there.
Let's not forget some of those women we haven't heard from in awhile.
Sounds like a party... 1 week.
-
BarbAnne and jadams - I took Effexor XR for awhile when I was taking Tamoxifen after my 1st cancer diagnosis in 2001. It really does help. And it didn't make me spacey or anything (well, no spacier than I normally am, lol). I didn't even realize it was doing anything besides helping the hot flashes until something happened that would have normally had me in tears, and I was like "oh well, I'll handle it". So it was pretty great actually!
-
Yesterday was total Hell LOL but today is better. I put make up on the one side of my face that isn't scraped up, I've mopped my floors, cleaned the toilets and made lunch. Whooo. Time for a dose of Ibuprofen and some thursday afternoon soap opera's.
Oh Vicki.......tell your DH I feel his pain!!! I'm sure mine is totalled. I have already found another and as soon as the slow insurance adjuster comes I will buy it. You can't keep a biker out of the saddle. Tell him he needs a trike!!! My mom and dad have one and they love it!!!!
I will be at the reunion either virtual or in real time ;0) Nothing could stop me.
I dread treatment tomorrow. I'll just say when asked what happened........ "you think I look bad, you should see the other guy".
Hubby was ahead of me on his bike. He looked back and saw a huge dust cloud. Figured he'd come back and find me dead. Instead, he couldn't keep me down. I remember none of this. Apparently I was more worried about my precious Vicki Vulcan than myself.
-
Pamela - DH has talked about the CanAms - what have you heard pos/neg about it? He has considered a trike for the last several years. We have our Honda del sol that we ride with the top off, but it's really not the same. Though after reading about your injuries, it's probably a lot less painful!!
-
Hey SOSisters...can't post much. Is there any time that we could all post and be on at the same time next week? Wouldn't that be great? Let me know what you think.
Thoughts and prayers are with you. Take care.
Jane

I think that Sydney is 14 hours ahead of East Coast. Is that right, Neece? So if we set a time like 8:00 pm EST it would be 5:00 pm PST and 10:00 am tomorrow in Aussie time. Hmmmmm... So if we set the date for the 25th, then Neece will have missed the party because she will already be on the next day!
-
... or she will have already celebrated the day before and gone home.
-
CanAms are more off road bike than cruiser type. I love bike racing (dirt track) but I've found crashin hurts worse now than it did in my 20s. I'd love to give the 175 MX a go though...lol
Mom and Dad have a Harley triked out. You can't get much safer than those things as far as bikes go. They just motor along like it's nothing. Prolly the only thing a trike needs to worry about it other cars.
Insurance adjuster is sposed to be here Monday. I cant wait. Got 5 stitches out today
happy girl I am -
Vickilynn that's so funny about the time difference - I can have my reunion a day earlier. ! I remember in 1979 when I flew to the west coast of the US, I flew out of Sydney and arrived in San Francisco the day before I left! How weird is that!
I don't care where the reunion is - just as long as we are together!
Australia had our national election yesterday - the result still undecided and it might be a hung parliament! Which means neither of the two major parties can form goverment in their own right, and may need to make a coalition deal with the 4 independents who were elected. My DH and I sat up all night to watch the TV coverage so I am very tired today!
Pamela hope you are healing up well and be careful of your Vicki Vulcan.
-
Neece - I vacationed in Australia a few years back and we spent an inordinate amount of time trying to figure out what time and day it was back in the States so we could check in with family and work. That date line thing really throws one for a loop. I'll never quite understand the parliamentary system (and I even lived in England!). We keep it simple here in the U.S. - the individual with the most votes wins the seat and the party that wins the most seats has the most votes. President elected directly "by the people" ...sort of. 'Course that often means our two parties are at an absolute dead-lock when it comes to governing.
I'm looking forward to our reunion. Problem is we are leaving on a real-world vacation tomorrow and my access to the internet will be limited, mainly because I'll have to wrestle the laptop out of the hands of a teenager. So if I'm not there in person, I'll be there in spirit!
Now here's a confession. My pride did not let me acknowledge any effects of chemo-brain during treatment. But the fact is, my driving skills declined appallingly. Back out of the garage...bang, into the stucco retaining wall. Pull into a parking place..smash, front bumper hits the curb. Leaving a parking spot...crunch, who put that concrete pole there? Plus it seems my car became a sitting duck for other people's ineptitude which left my bumpers scarred and paint smeared (maybe those other chemo patients in the parking lot?). So, in celebration of my one year anniversary from the start of chemo I'm having both bumpers replaced. I'm so excited!
Patty
-
Confession is good for the soul, Patty, but not necessarily the car. Where are you headed on vacation? I love vacations. We just went Friday night to the coast and spent the night and ate clam chowder in my favorite little seafood restaurant and walked barefoot on the beach.... it was a beautiful 2 days and I came home refreshed.
OK - my son's simple wedding now has 13 flower girls!!!!!! I know. Thankfully my DIL (the bride's sister, remember?) and her friends are sewing like crazy. I don't sew... or at least I don't sew well, so I don't have to worry about that. I'm hosting a shower for my new DIL a week from Tuesday and I wanted to do "simple" so I came up with a beach party theme, went to the Dollar Store and spent way more money for decorations than I should have... but it will be cute. and fun. and simple. right.
Neece - i hope the election results don't cause havoc! I've forgotten if you said - but do you live near Sydney?
-
Jane - Why don't you name a time and we'll just do it. All of us who can be online will be. And those of you who can't be online can put your 2 cents in earlier or later....
-
Name the virtual time and place and I will be there. I love vacations especially if we are traveling first class with good food.
I have been having problems dealing with my 18 year old son recently. My husband and my communication with him has gotten to an all time low. I guess you are only as happy as your saddest child. Ug. I am looking into counseling, it is not so easy finding a good fit. Any suggestions? Of course, it has to be covered by insurance.
-
Good Morning
Barb & Jane- I started out with 37.5mg of effexor and went up to 75mg. I have no side effects and the flushing and flashing are down to 1 or 2 a day. I really recommend it.
My son like a small college called Bridgewater that is in Bridgewater VA. It is about 10 mins. from Harrisonburg(James Madison). We went to a car auction and got a 2000 Nissan Maxima to replace the car he totaled. He is not really ready to drive again but I am making him start out slow and just drive around town.
I will try to make the reunion but internet at my house doesn't always work
THINK POSITIVE
Catherine

China sorry to hear you are having family problems. As you know my little family went thru some difficlt times earlier this year. it was hell. And the last thing any of us need at this stage. I hope you can find a good counsellor even if it just for you, to have someone to talk to and perhaps bounce ideas around with.
Vickilynn yes, I live near Sydney - a region called the Blue Mountains - about 1 1/2 hours drive from Sydney. It is a world heritage listed area and very beautiful.
The votes are still getting counted in our election but some good stuff has come out of this - lots of talk about reforming politics in this country. People are pretty sick of the entrenched self interest often shown by the two major parties. We have a Greens party here and they won lots more votes because of that. Everyone is now waiting to see what the final outcome will be.
Patty enjoy your holiday!
-
Good morning SOSisters.... in a hurry, sorry can't post too much. How about 8:30 EST? I will be out of town all day tomorrow but should be home by then. I am so looking forward to posting when we can all be online! How much fun. Everyone wear your tropical outfits and sandals, we will be the loveliest group at the resort! Talk to you tomorrow!
Thoughts and prayers are with you.
Jane
-
OK it's a date! Those of you who can make it, 8:30 tomorrow (which here is Wed, but if you live near Sydney is actually Thurs, and if you live in Indiana - Pamela - I'm not sure WHAT day it is!!)
