Showtime "Big C"

So I watched the new series "The Big C" with Laura Linney on Showtime.  Honestly, I am not sure how I feel. Undecided Maybe too soon to tell but.......

Just thought I'd check with y' all!  So how did you feel, if ya saw it?

    I watched "The Big C" last night, but I'm not quite ready to give it a thumbs up or a thumbs down. It was a little "over the top" for me, and the whole concept seems a little weird...

    I saw ads for it, and was spared the decision to watch or not, since we don't have showtime. My initial reaction is , great, now we're going to be shown how to "do cancer," and how we should present ourselves. I can't imagine that the darkest moments of a cancer diagnosis and treatment will be shown-think taking off a mastectomy bandage for the first time, or telling your children you have cancer and hearing them scream and cry.

    I don't think a show would be done about a man  and his prostate cancer. 

    This doesn't sit well with me!

    The character (Laura Linney) is diagnosed with stage lV malignant melanoma, who decides to forgo treatment.  I thought it was pretty good, laugh a little, cry a little. 

    Just wait another month, when October brings out every bc movie from here to eternity....aaghh.

    I have such mixed feelings about it.   Time will tell.  Love the cast tho.

    mymountain it made me cry too, kleenex a good thing!

    I saw the advertisement, but was unsure about it so I didn't watch it. Maybe at another time.

    Jenn : I re watched it and felt a bit better.  It is a bit poignant, could relate as my method of getting thru treatment was with humor.  So we will see if I keep watching or not.  Did like previews of her friendship of lady across the street.

    I thought it was a good follow up to the season opener of Weeds. I'm for anything that entertains me!

    Haven't seen the show yet, but maybe the producers needs some "real" consultants for the show.  If I chose to watch the show, I want to laugh and relate.  Only time will tell if the show survives.

    My first reading of review had me determined not to like it.  Sounded too simplistic and superficial.  I caught one of the reruns of the Pilot.  I'm as conflicted as others.  Laura Linney definitely brings a layered approach to the emotions her character must be wrestling with.  However, the perverse humor of her sons pranks and her weird retaliation just didn't sit well.   I must have missed something about her and the couch because I didn't get the pouring wine on it or how she would have managed to place it so nicely in the hole for the swimming pool.  Not to mention getting the dog down there.

    If the writers can stick with nuanced and complicated it has possibilities.   One more thing:   Is the actress going to be flawlessly beautiful to the end?

    Liane - If memory serves (LOL I am on Tamoxifen) the whole wine thing had to do with her husband spilling wine on the sofa.  I believe this is mentioned when both her and her husband are in the restaurant having dinner.  I think she came home to find him drunk standing on the sofa, he had a few of his "buddies" over.  Later in the conversation she says she wants to spill wine on the sofa and he tells her that she is not the type to spill wine on the sofa. (I had to watch it twice)

    In my humble opinion - Sofa in the hole dug for the swimming pool is more along the lines of poetic license.

    I may try to watch "The Big C".  I know this sounds strange, but there are so many times when I'm watching television shows or movies that cancer comes up and I feel so disconnected to the characters.

    jenn3 - I think I can understand that. 

    I have watched the first episode three times now with the last one I watched it on  ON DEMAND and included the interview by creator Darlene Hunt, interviews by the principle actors etc...  So each time I watched it I liked it better.  I think ones post treatment mood enters into the equation a bit too! Wink  I think what I could relate to is my odd sort of cancer sense of humor, sometimes things that REALLY ARE NOT funny WERE funny because of some sort of ironic nature of the events.......Undecided  Or the OK now what!  or You gotta be kidding me!  Really!! So that is my input!  Really look forward to the next episode, well that and WEEDS, TRU BLOOD and all the others!  Have a nice weekend girls!

    I felt like the first episode was just laying a foundation of storytelling for other better episodes to come.  I read a critique of it in my Entertainment magazine and agree with that pretty much:  it seems odd that she doesn't tell anyone, but that she is a good actress that can carry the show.

    I will continue to watch it...

    So I am likeing the "Big C" more and more.  I think I can relate to her irreverence.
