sweetie, I'll second everything Lilah said re the gummies and fills etc. I'll add that you need to talk to your PS about how you want to look and feel in the end, and then he and you need to work to make that happen. If you like the size you are now with your TEs (although shape may be a bit diff as you say), then ask him if you will end up this size when you get your final implant. If not, then ask what you two need to do to get you to this size, like more fills. In other words, YOU should be stating what YOU WANT and he should be working to make that happen, if it's possible. There may be some limitations due to things like your anatomy, skin thinness, skin and muscle health, whether you had radiation, etc etc, so he has to take medical considerations into account, but otherwise he should be working to get you to the look and feel that YOU want, not what he thinks is "right". But that means you need to define those things for yourself!! Good luck!!
-
Oh, and bcincolo - YAY on the good followup and being "done"! I'm also supposedly done too unless I decide to do a nip & areola....haven't decided yet.
-
CS777- I can't thank you enough for all the help you've been giving me. Every time you all post something I write it down so I can talk to my PS about it. I had a striaght up bilateral, no rads, no chemo. I had a NSM so I know that may be an issue with where it ends up. I will discuss all the topics you mentioned. You girls have been such a help to me. The determing factor will be when I see him if I can stay the way I am right now in the TE with the gummies. Thank you for reminding me to really state to him what I want and make sure that is what he aims for. Did you see my pics on the forum? I will keep you posted, you've been a sweetheart along with the other girls here!
-
Lilah, I had NSM so as far as that goes, that part is done already.
Sweetie, I love the gummy cake idea!
-
You're welcome sweetie...just the way it works around here right - I help you, someone else helps me, you help someone else...this is an amazing community of women. I did not see your pics yet as I don't log in on the pic forum very often but the next time I do I'll search for your thread. Good luck to you!
BCincolo - its so great you don't even have to think about deciding on nipple and areola! Again, congrats on being DONE!!!!!!!!
-
Oh sorry BC I bet you said that too and my chemo brain would not absorb it
Woot on being DONE!
-
Thanks for the grats. I just want NO MORE surgery EVER if I can help it. I know I'll have the physical therapy to get through and labs and Tamox to take for year and years and years....but if it keeps me from someone cutting into me again, that will be worth it as far as I'm concerned.
-
Hear hear BCinCol!
-
BCincolorado-If you lived closer I'd make you one for your birthday. We are happy for you to have made it this far and so bravely, your a great inspiration to those of us farther behind on this journey.
Since you mentioned PT I wanted to ask the ladies if when you got your fills you got neck pain or back pain. I was doing ok until the last fill and now I am all locked up. My PT told me he can't really help much because he can't touch the muscles in the front near my TE (my ps said not to disturb anything) and everything is connected. I feel like I'm in constant pain in my neck and back and I know it's from the TE.
CS777-thank you, and I agree we always have to "pay it forward"
-
BCincolo - I'll second Lilah's "Hear hear" for sure. Definitely with you on no more surgery!
Sweetie - No I didn't have back or neck pain with fills, but I think its pretty common. I was going to say check into PT but you already have one. Mine did a lot of gentle soft tissue massage all over the TE during that period - that's mostly what my PT was. You might check with your PS again to see if he'd relax his restriction since now you're in pain. In addition, I don't know if you stretch a lot but if not then I highly recommend stretching several times a day. Let me know if you're unsure of what stretches might be good & I can list them. Stretching is what really got me through the TEs. And now the implant too, actually. Good luck!
-
CS7777 I would love to know what stretches to do. I had my BMX on June 24th. When should I ask for PT? Do I ask my PT or general surgeon? Are there special PTs? Does anyone know a good PT in the Coral Springs. Florida area?
I get my first fill this Tuesday.
Thanx
-
Kitwe -- the American Cancer Society has a bunch of exercises on its website.
Sweetie -- I found that if my boyfriend massaged my shoulder blade it relieved (for me) a LOT of the pain from the TEs (shoulder blade muscle is connected to the pectoral muscle that is being stretched -- or for all I know, since anatomy/science is not my strong suit -- the pectoral muscle goes from chest to shoulder blade). See what your PT says. Or get your loved one to do same
-
Kitwe~
This is the thread i started on ACS CSN
http://csn.cancer.org/node/189655
Its titled 'POST MASTECTOMY PHYSIO EXERCISES'.
Many women have found it helpful and it is what out hosptitals give you in booklet form to do,starting the day after surgery. If you click on my username there (m-star ) it will take you to my page. Then click on my 'expression' section and i posted the photo's out of the booklet that show you how to do the exercises. I'm not sure but you may have to register to view the 'expressions' part.
-
Lilah-Your so right! My PT said the same thing about the whole area being connected. My shoulder blade area is so tight too. My hubsand will massage me if I ask him, if he's not falling a sleep from working overtime every day! I have been tyring ice and Advil when it gets bad. Does the tightness get better after exchange at all? I know it's pulled very taunt with the TE but it's still the pec muscles and implant is placed there so it seems it would still be somewhat tight no matter what.
M-star-thanks for the link, I printed out the excerises to start doing them at home.
-
m star Thanx I printed the exercises and will start immediatly. I joind but could not find you to get the pics but that's Ok I can manage without.
I see my PS tomorrow for my 1st fill and will ask about Gummies. I know he does them.
-
ok well if you go back to the post of the exercises, (but you must be logged in) and click on my name where my photo is on the post,it will take you to my page.
Hope you find them helpful
-
Sweetie - my relief was instant upon exchange... since exchange I do sometimes still get some tightness in my shoulder blade but it is not the horrible pain it was (and probably is just normal stress). My BF still does give me massages to the shoulder blade now and then but isn't the daily necessity it became prior to exchange. Gentle stretching of your arm also helps a lot.
Thanks for the link Kay!
-
Kitwe and all, I'll second the list of stretches Kay gave - even w/o the pics its very comprehensive. The ones that I do are a bit different but essentially cover the same areas. I just typed up a description and then lost my post by accidently clicking on a link (I HATE that!!) and I don't have the time to retype, sorry. So, go with Kay's list and you'll be covered. Just go slow to start with and don't overdo things too quickly; work gently and slowly; work your way up in terms of repetitions or time to hold things. And, for any stretch where your arms are hanging in the air out to the sides or overhead and thereby stretching your chest, put some kind of support out to your sides so that your arms are supported (e.g., folded or rolled blankets or towels). Make them small enough that you get some stretch but not so small that the full weight of your arms is hanging off your chest After a few weeks when you feel comfortable with the stretches then you could remove the supports and you'll get more stretch, but you'll know you can handle it. Just my 2-cents-worth.
-
I do have very tight muschles in my neck and shoulders and even my rib cage. I think it is the fact that all the muscles being pulled in the front to make our new reconstruction. I know sometimes when I take a step I actually can feel muscles stretching in my new foob. Strange, I know! I did home PT for quite awhile as I was being expanded but it definitely didn't do the job since I still can't raise my arm. So on to formal PT next week.
-
Kay, I was just looking at your pics on the picture forum and you look amazing. wow! I cannot wait to see the final results.
-
Ladies I just had my exchange 11 days ago and I feel great. I have mentor smooth round moderate profile. I had the TE put in feb/10...one year post mastectomy. The TE felt really hard and full at the last fill but a few weeks later I hardly noticed it. I had TE for 5 months. These gummie implants are amazing. Soft and so natural looking. No one would ever look at me (dressed) and wonder if they are fake or real.
-
Are Mentor gummies different than Allegan gummies? I had thought gummies didn't come in round shape but maybe different manufacturers offer different types. I know my PS said mine will be Allergan textured anatomical and I thought she said that is the only shape they come in. I might be thinking about something else.
So glad to hear you are feeling great 11 days post op. I'm anxiously awaiting my exchange date. It is supposed to be end of August or beginning of September but I haven't been given an exact date yet.
-
Jilly~ thanks! I cant wait to see them after exchange either! LOL =D
-
Congrats, pickle, on your great outcome! Glad you're happy!
Mantra, both Allergan and Mentor make implants that use what they call "cohesive silicone", which has more crosslinking between molecules (compared to standard silicone implants) to keep it held together rather than running like a liquid. The Allergan ones are exactly what you described (anatomical shaped, textured), and officially they are the Allergan 410 (or Inamed 410...Allergan bought Inamed but the Inamed name is sometimes used). These are always called gummy bears, and if you cut one it truly looks like a gummy bear candy after you bite a chunk off. Mentor makes implants with several levels of crosslinked gels and therefore several levels of cohesivity. Some of the gooier ones (i.e. more liquidy) come in rounds; their highest cohesivity comes in an anatomical shape. You can see the description of the latter here: http://www.mentorcorp.com/global/breast-augmentation/contour-profile-gel.htm.
There seems to be ongoing discussion about Mentor's different levels of cohesivity and what "cohesive" means when some of them are still somewhat liquidy...sometimes people call Mentor's gummies and sometimes they don't. So it's a bit confusing. Better to describe specifically what brand and model you have than just say gummy. Oh, in the US, the Allergan 410 is only available through the clinical trial, and the highest cohesive Mentor ones (the link above) is also only in clinical trial. Hope that helps.
-
I believe that the "gummy" or "true gummy" is the Allergan 410, though -- for the purposes of discussion here. The more cohesive mentor anatomicals are ALMOST as firm as the 410, as I understand it, are considered "gels" but maybe not gummies?
-
Not sure what the correct term is for the Mentors but I know they can be cut in two and nothing leaks out. The sample in PS looks exactly like a gummy bear inside...without the nice colors of course...lol
-
LOL well cool!
-
I know I've seen a video online where a sugeon cut one in half. He also showed what happened to the old silicone ones and how they leaked and also how easily saline ones leak. These seemed to me to be much more stable and hopefully more durable.
-
BC -- I agree. It's one reason I wanted the gummy.
-
Hey girls,
I'm just catching up on the thread. I am seeing my PS tomorrow and I have reviewed and read everything you kind and lovely ladies have shared about your gummies. Most of you seem really happy with them, explained the W,HT,projection issues, love the shape, state they are firm, say the look natural and say the PS usually puts in a smaller implant than the TE cc's. So armed with the knowledge you have given me I am going to ask him exactly what he is going to be able to do in my case. I am hoping to be the size I am now, maybe a little bigger (300's) and not too narrow. Also I need to talk about the wide space. I will let you know what he says and hopefully I'll only need a couple more fills before I will officially be a gummy girl!
