On Monday 19, 2010 I will be starting Chemo. I am so scared and nervous. I need to know how others felt when they first started and how do they feel now.

    Hi Ms Piggy,

I was scared out of my wits when I started chemo-I took an ativan (antianxiety med) before my first infusion. Chemos are a bit different from each other-I did 4 cycles of Taxotere and Cytoxan, ending 10/31/08 ( Happy Halloween, that day.) As I was telling someone starting chemo the other day, I don't remember too much about-the mind miraculously heals even from a cancer diagnosis and chemo. You're gonna make it!

    Best wishes,

    Catherine

MsPiggy - I know you're scared, but chemo today isn't what it used to be.  I won't lie and say it's easy, but it's doable.  You can do chemo and still get out and about.  I didn't work during chemo, but there are some women that do feel well enough to work.  You can and will do this.

Also, another suggestion that might help.  Look on the Chemotherapy -Before, During and After thread and look for the July 2010 starters - someone usually starts a thread for the month so that all of you can experience and help each other.  If one hasn't been started, start a thread - you will find a lot women who feel the same as you.

It's hard, but do-able.  The fear of the unknown was worse for me than than actual treatment.  Completely agree with Jenn about joining a chemo group.  Read through some of the previous months to get an idea of side effects.

    Also...welcome! (sorry you're here!)

Miss Piggy, I was terrified.  I thought I was going to blow up in the chair.  And I didn't!  It is very doable.  Im so glad I did chemo--althought I really had no choice.  Did rads too.  I know I've thrown everything I can at it.  Good luck and let us know on Monday how it goes.  You are not alone.

It is no picnic when you are going through it, but you will get through it, and a good life will be had again on the other side.

Just take it one step at a time, get through each round and rally yourself for the next.  Work with your Onc to manage any SE's you get - there are drugs for everything! And join a Chemo group on this site - it will save your sanity some days.

YOU CAN DO IT!! Find the strength with in you to overcome your fears. When you feel good FEEL GOOD!! Drink lots of water that helps so much. If you have an Ipod take it load it with your favorite songs or games or movies. Just roll with it.  This cancer crap makes you feel like you have no control over your life. Sometimes the only thing you do have is the choice of how you handle things. BE BRAVE!! BE HAPPY!!

I finished my chemo in April now doing Herceptin and starting rads. I feel like my old self most days. When I first started chemo I was scared to death! I sat down in that chair and gave all my fears to God and just went along for the ride. Laughing

Have a great weekend!! Don't think about chemo on Monday until Monday. Do something fun.

    You're strong! You're a Warrior!
