Hi ladies!!

My question is this - I'm getting ready to submit my FMLA and Disability paperwork.  Both of these forms do require a doctor to verify the medical situation, and I understand that.  However, why do both of these also request that I sign a Medical Authorization/Release?  I do not feel that I should have to give these people/companies access to ALL of my medical information... nor to the specifics of my cancer treatment.  Legally, what do I have to provide them to still be protected and receive benefits (and I pay for independent disability through a company like AFLAC).

Thanks in advance, ladies!!!

    Leanna,

My DH has had brain cancer for six years, and went out on permanent disability last year.  Every couple of months, I get these forms and medical waivers to fill out, and it seems like such a waste of time given his diagnosis and prognosis.  In your case, I don't know what the minimum is that you have to give them, but I would just fill out the authorizations to get it done.  I think that if you give them a hard time, you will find it's a longer process to get approved.  I don't know for sure, but I would assume your information is still considered confidential, even though they have to review it to confirm your time off.

    Best of luck to you,

    Bobbie

Leanna - I don't think they're looking for ALL of your medical history and are only looking into what pertains to this particular situation.  I think the waivers are a catch all, but you could inquire with your HR dept to find out if you can put limitations on the waiver before signing.  If you do, be sure to put it above your signature.  However, I agree with Bobbie, if you fight it may prolong the approval process.  Good luck.
