MammoSite versus Whole Breast Radiation

Wow. I am confused. My final pathology reports haven't come back from last week's lumpectomy, but it looks like I may have a choice between MammoSite and Whole Breast Radiation. It seems like even the experts are conflicted on which route is the best. How is a layperson supposed to decide?

Also, why is it more of an option for people 45-years-old and older rather than younger women? What is that about?

Hi Barb, I have been thinking on the same terms, which one is best. I had my partial Mastectomy laast tues. the 18th. I do not know the full decision yet on the type of radiation, but it has been on my mind.

I was curious as to why Martina Navratlova elected full radiation to all the milk ducts in her breast recently. She had non invasive, very small cancer tumor removed and lumpectomy. Given mine is so much larger, would local radiation seeds be enough area? I guess thats a good question for our oncologist. Would love everyone opinion on this though.

    Best of luck to you.

Apparently I will have that choice to make also after surgery.  I'm so confused, even after much reading.  Would appreciate input.  Thanks so much.

Anyone get more info? It appears the age cutoff for mammosite varies from professional organization to professional organization. How are we supposed to decide if the professionals can't agree?
