JOJO: As for a nice gift for your RADS Team such as personal home-baked chocolate chip cookies in a nice jar and with a thank you card, I am most certain they would more than appreciate that... you are more than half-way finished girl...

Charmaine

JOJO:
'Hmmm a gift for me ???? now that gets me thinking , the shock of finding out you've got cancer is worth gold, the price of having surgery is worth jewelry ,the price of having to go through chemo is worth diamonds, the price of having to go through rads is worth putting all that together and its a ring , and now the price of living with the fear of this all coming back again is worth my husband saying yep go for it'
I like what you say above - may I borrow this from you please and post it to my blog I started up recently about cancer journey.
Thank you so much lady..
Hugs Charmaine
-
Sugar77: Sherri I was told by my RADS team to not have baths or use shower/bath gels and bubble baths/oils for at least a month and a bit.
Charmaine
-
Thanks Charmaine. Did they say when you could take antioxidants?
-
Sherri: I was never told when I could or not take these. I started taking Biotin and Vitamin D last week.
Charmaine
-
Sugar77....I do worry about being TN and no other options...but in another way glad I don't have
to take hormone replacemet....which I had always avoided (to hopefully ward of cancer) guess
it did not matter....so I am just hoping for the best and livin it day to day.
My breast/underarm is bright red...cracked open spot under breast..hoping it will heal now
that I'm done.
-
Owww-eee. 2 more to go and I'm starting to blister a little under my arm. Felt like I was wearing a shirt of coarse-grit sandpaper this afternoon. I started using the silver sulfadiazine tonight - a new messy cream. It's really good to hear from those of you who are done so that I know how long and what to expect afterwards, and that there is more normal-feeling chest (at least one that doesn't feels like I'm wearing a sandpaper shirt) at the end of the tunnel - so please, keep it coming. I'm also wondering about the anti-oxidants - I'll ask tomorrow.
-
Hi ladies,
I am on the "boost" series, starting yesterday. So, no more entire breast sessions, but instead, they are pulsing into my tumor site. I only have 7 sessions left! Yeah!
Also wondering about the deodorant issue. I am so looking forward to using regular deodorant again, as I live in Texas, and the weather will be getting mighty warm in the next few weeks. Apparently, I am quite a sweat-er.
I just started with my Vit D supplements last week, and just as an FYI, everything I've read about Vit D supplementation points to skin not burning as much in the sun. Wonder if that works for rad rays as well? Interesting. I have not burned too badly, Just a little bit of redness underneath, and a very strange texture to my skin, like goosebumps.
Peace to all of you..... so happy that we're finishing up rads!

Hey all, today will be treatment 22 so only 11 more after this.
On another topic, there is an article on yahoo today that is from Reuters that everyone should read. It is about insurance companies cancelling policies of women with breast cancer. The companies doing the cancellations were all subsidiaries of WellPoint. What I gleamed from the article is that one of the tricks used to cancel was to claim that the patient didn't comply with requests for information like employment history or the like. That scared the crap out of me. I get so much mail from the insurance company and the like that it would be easy to miss such a letter. I urge everyone to read this article---not to scare you but to arm you---and share it not only with women with cancer but with anyone you know who has any serious illness requiring lots of pricey care.
And if you have had insurance cancelled or know someone who has, state regulators and private attorneys are looking for you. Apparently the insurance companies are hiding behind privacy laws [designed to protect you] to keep from telling investigators and attorneys exactly who who they have cancelled so that the investigators can talk to these people.
If the link doesn't work, just cut and paste.

Marianna: That is an interesting theory about Vit D and skin reactions during radiation. I haven't heard that before but it sounds plausible. I came through radiation really well despite my very fair, sun-borne prone skin. I started taking 2,000 IU Vit D3/day at the beginning of the year so maybe it helped.
-
Hmmm, I wonder if all my VitD has been helping me with my reaction to Zapping. I started on the drops and the weekly pill before rads and have been continuing. I think I am getting at least 2000IU per day but thats not counting whats in my calcium tabs. . . . .
I have had very little skin reaction to the rads until these last couple of appointments.
editted to add: 22 regular appointments down, 6 to go and then the boost, as my ZapTech says. I say 22 down, 11 to go! Much more redness today and a sore nipple. The question is however, is it sore enough to sneak out even earlier today? Sneaking out would make me more likely to get to bed at 9pm, something I have not been so good at this last week. And I'd really be curious if a night or two of 9 hour sleep would help with the redness this far into the game or if I've just hit poor boobie's limit on Zaps. . . .

Sugar - No word on baths or hot tubs from the completion instructions I was given.
BUT I woudn't go in the hot tub anyway because of my SN removal and I worry about lymphedema so hot baths and hot tub are out for me!
I have been increasing the hot water temp in my shower lately and it feels great!
My skin now is not as sensitive as it was during rads - it's dry and flaking a bit but not "burnt" & sensitive/itching anymore.
The completion instructions did say (and I was warned by my onc as well) that this area will be more sensitive to sun exposure so to wear SPF 30 at least or keep covered with clothing while in the sun.
Don't know about you but I don't normall go out in the sun TOPLESS so that won't be an issue.
However I did notice that part of my back got zapped so I'll have to be careful about covering that or getting someone to put sunscreen on for me!
For those that are blistering and skin breaking - I had an RX for the silver sulfadine cream too but in the end opted to use the Calendula ointment for burns, cuts and abrasions (not the lotion but the cream version) on my collar bone.
I also tried the Weleda Calendula lotion and added a few drops of lavender oil to it. Lavender oil helps with burns as well so it's good to have on hand for first aid treatment of burns. It takes the sting out!
Everything is healing nicely and I'm feeling more positive about how my skin looks!

Hi girls - so happy to hear of some many finishing up treatments - I have 4 more to go. I saw the doctor and she told me to keep the aquaphor and XClair on three times a day. Under the arm is the worst. She did tell me that once I am done with all treatments including boosts she will give me the prescription for silvadene and once I start using that - with in 48 hours I will see improvement. But I can't start until I'm done becuase the creme contains silver. Anyway hope everyone has a good evening. Chat again soon. Kathy
-
Only ONE MORE boost to go then I'm done! I'm happy at the thought of NOT going to the cancer center every single day!
Sounds like everyone is coming close to the end of treatment. Hooray for us! My skin held up very well; just in the last few days has the peeling/sensitivity really kicked in, but not too much for me to need any kind of medications for it. I just put lotion on about once a day, wear an undershirt and no more underwires for me since the skin in the fold under my boob is peeling. Hopefully the healing will be quick after next week!
Peace and happy healing to everyone!

One more day for you Shelby...bet you can't wait!
I'm not as itchy today. I'm not really all that red but I have all kinds of brown dots...almost like freckles. Not sure what that's all about. I'm wearing a 100% cotton bra. I found a particular syle number that worked for me, so I went back and bought a few more. Originally I purchased some tank tops to wear but they "rub me the wrong way" under the arm. The cotton bra is so comfy and gives me some support, enabling me to actually get a little speed on my treadmill without the boob hurting.
Have a nice evening!

I finished rads 13 days ago and have been happily amazed at how quickly the skin is healing. Back during week 5 of treatment I was getting burned pretty bad, especially under my arm...today my underarm is back to normal. My SNB scar is hardly noticeable. My boob isn't red anymore, it's a dark tan that's pealing. The nipple is a little sensitive but not uncomfortable. As of yesterday, I'm back to wearing a bra! I'm still using Aquaphor twice a day; the doc said to continue for another couple weeks.
During the first week after treatment, I felt alot of random jabs and jolts like little electric shocks. The doc said it's scar tissue healing and not to be alarmed. A couple days were kinda uncomfortable. I don't get them as often now, but they're not gone. The doc said when I go back for my 30 day followup he will talk to me about taking Vitaman E; it;s suppose to help with scar tissue healing. But I'm not to take it now because it interferes with the benefits of radiation that I'm still getting.
For the summer months, I was told to apply lotion with SPF50 all over before getting dressed. That way no matter what I wear, when I move or turn, all skin is protected.
Best wishes to all; hope your zappings zip by!
-
Sherri, I have the brown dots/freckles too. I'm guessing it's just a weird skin reaction to rads. I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one! Hopefully they will fade...
MzJ, glad to hear you are healing quickly. That's great! I hadn't heard about the Vit E problem, my rad onc didn't say anything about it to me, so thanks for the tip.
I'm going to a parade today for Fiesta here in San Antonio. My daughter will be marching - she plays clarinet. This is her first parade! I'm going to be slathering on the sunscreen, as it is supposed to be in the 80's and mostly sunny.
Have a great day everyone!
~Shelby
-
Shelby - I'm glad I"m not the only one with the dots/freckles! I'm really not all that red and it doesn't feel like a sunburn. My nipple was very sore and is now feeling better and I see it's peeling. I'm still a bit itchy but that's clearing up, too. I saw about your daughter in the parade on your FB post. Enjoy these precious moments...she's probably so excited to be in the parade. My 10-year-old is in an upcoming school play "Grease" and I just bought her a poodle skirt on eBay. She can't stop talking about the play.
Congratulations to everyone who finishes up this week and I'm sending good wishes to all you lovely ladies for minimal side effects. Have a wonderful weekend.
I hope we can all still stay in touch on this thread after our treatments are done. It would be great to keep in touch!
Sherri

And, as of 8am this morning, I'm done!
I'm pretty darn sore, particularly in the afternoon/evening -- mostly an extremely raw-feeling nipple and stinging armpit over a general tenderness. Hope it goes away quickly, I'm ready to rejoin my life! I see people outside moving with ease; I can't wait to be there too and not to be doing the slow, minimum-jiggle walk.
I'd be doing a happy dance if I could figure out how to do it with minimum jiggle.
Have a great weekend to you all.. for those of you not done yet, it'll be done soon. And I have to say that at just an hour and a half post-rads, it sure feels good when its over.
- Andrea
oh, and I asked about the antioxidants, and my nurse said it was fine to start taking them again today.
-
Brown dots here too! I hope they go away!
Energy levels are okay.... I do sleep like a ROCK at night, but I seem to be okay for the most part in the day. It's odd that a few weeks ago, I was getting really tired in the evenings -- almost like a first trimester pregnancy kind of fatigue. Now, I definitely want to go to bed early, but I can make it through the evening without feeling like I need to lie down.
Happy Friday to all, and congrats to those who've finished! Lucky! I finish next Friday, and have a champagne lunch planned with my husband.
-
Yup...I have those lovely brown dots too
- Today was my last regular treatment - I start boosts Monday and then I am DONE on Friday. Yayyyy!!! I'm tanned and starting to peel underneath, but not bad at all. I haven't really noticed any fatigue either, but my onc said that sometimes it hits in the week or two after finishing treatment, so we'll see.
- Congratulations to all who have finished and to all that are nearing the end, we can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel and that is a very good thing

I hope everyone has a great weekend!
-
Yeah AndreaS.....congrats on being DONE!
-
I'm DONE, DONE, DONE. I go back to see the doc in two weeks and don't know if that is the end of it or not. I see my med onco on the 3rd. It will be so nice to come straight home and not a detour by the hospital first.

Congratulations to all you wonderful women who have finished this stage and now onto the next!!!!!!! I am 4 boost away from my celebratory dinner and I cannot wait!
As for the brown dots I asked about that weeks ago as I started seeing them and they told me it is due to the amount of hair that we have that is not visible to the eye and it is not a permanent thing, once we are done being radiated all will go back to normal.......
I had my 1st boost today and have major heartburn.....but other than that, only the smallest of complaints I thought this was pretty easy.....just really a pain in the ass daily reminder of what we all have....I feel that you women who have had chemo have it far worse as your SE are going to be greater due to all the chemo treatments your body had to endure.....
I agree that it would be nice to keep in touch with each other....I really like being able to see updates on FB as well.....
Thinking of all of you~ June

JOJO:
My blog thanks you girl! Charmaine

-
Ladies re the sunscreen factor,
My RADS Oncologist Nurse and Medical Oncologist Nurses both suggest to get sunscreen factor 50+ and that is what I have done... good idea to also put on your face too when you are going out for those of you that have had chemotherapy... as well as your arms. Oh, have it applied to your skin for at least 20 minutes before going out in the sun is what I was told.
Charmaine
-
Congrats Flo & Andrea! I hope you went out and celebrated last night!
I finished number 20 yesterday...only 5 more whole breast treatments and then onto my boosts! I still can't believe how fast it is going! We had a HUGE spring snowstorm here yesterday and I had to have my husband take me to my appt. I told one of the techs how we had such a hard time making it in and she said "well, you didn't have to come" and I thought that there is NO WAY I'm going to miss and appt and push my finish date back. MAY 7th is the day that I am counting on being finished and a foot of snow isn't going to stop me!!!
Shelby - can you send some of your nice weather my way?!! I hope you enjoyed your parade, it must've been fun to see your daughter marching.
Have a great weekend everyone!
Liz
-
Liz - sun and warm weather coming your way! It was HOT yesterday at the parade...86 degrees! I had to take an umbrella to protect my easily-burned skin. Even 15 minutes in the sun turned my legs and arms pink! But it was a great parade, and my daughter looked great (of course!).
I'm starting to get some nasty, painful peeling under my breast. I'm slathering on aloe - actually after-sun lotion. It makes the stinging slightly less torturous. It's hard to sleep with the stinging pain every time I move. I hope this heals soon!
June, thanks for the explanation of the brown dots. I was wondering what they were!
Hope everyone has something fun planned for the zap-free weekend! I'm just going to relax at home today, watching my husband mow the grass. Tomorrow, it's back to homework. I start my teaching apprenticeship on Monday, I'm nervous but excited!
Blessings to all,
Shelby
-
Congrats to those finishing this week and hang in there for those still going to Rads!
I too had the brown dots and yes they did go away. Actually all of my "browned" skin is sluffing off and looking pretty normal - well maybe a bit darker than normal.
My chest area - visible above my shirt - looks like I've had some sun and is kind of tan.
Have a great weekend everyone - and if you're having sun remember your sunscreen!
