Cake, The weight loss isn't really going, but thanks for asking. I can oddly enough see a change in my shape....not as much flab as there was in the gut area and I am starting to get a waist back, but so far as showing up on the scales, it isn't. It is good I started WW as soon as I started on this medicine because I was losing at first and that sort of gave me an advantage because now even though I am not losing and am actually picking up a pound or more some weeks, I still am below where I was when I started....if that makes any sense. But then again I did wear my shoes at the original weigh in so guess that added about two lbs to my starting weight. Glad you are feelilng better. I had a friend who didn't have any weight problems with tamoxifen at all...or any problems with it at all for that matter.
I was watching this commercial for Zumba on the tv this weekend. I had to really talk myself out of ordering the tapes. My father says there is a Zumba class at the life center he goes to and most of the people have lost a lot of weight. But I am wondering how it would be with a knee replacement.....doubt if it would be good for it.
-
Didn't go to WW tonight. One of my friends had her surgery biospy this AM and she has invasive lobular breast cancer. Another area of tissue is still out for the verdict, but they told her chemo for sure. She is a mess. I took dinner to them and visited and we cried, but ended the evening laughing so think that is a good sign. I know nothing about lobular only that is is much less common than ductal.
-
Oh, Marybe, I am so sorry that your friend has to deal with this stinky disease!!!! You are a good friend to take dinner to her and cry with her and be there for her. She is fortunate to have a caring friend like you. It is UNfortunate that either of you have to go through this! Hang WW!
-
Thank you, Cake. I do not know a thing about lobular BC since mine was ductal and I guess over 80% of cases diagnosed are ductal, but the fact I have been doing this a long time, look fine and feel good I think offer her hope that she will do fine also. She's just Stage l so she's got that going for her.
It was not a good weekend for weight watching. Went to Costco with a pal and made the mistake of going near lunch time and I was starving and ate every sample they had to offer and even went back for seconds on the rotisserie chicken salad, which I am going to try to make myself. I would think with lowfat mayo it would not be a bad thing to eat at all. Now the cinnamon buns and cheesecake samples......well, those are another story. While visiting this friend I went walking with her since she has been doing WW for years and is into exercise. I am so sore, but it's a good sore and a sign to me that I desperately need to exercise. So I am going to work on that.
I have cut out edamame and soy products so am hoping possibly my CA 27.29 will be improved next time.....it may not make any difference at all, but I figured it was worth a shot at trying.
-
Marybe...is the edamame a estrogen creating product? I know soy is..I've given that up and anything that contains soybean oil. I am so glad your friend has an earlier stage BC...sorry that she has it at all, but at least it's something. Even though you had seconds, at least you walked some of it off, LOL!
I lost another pound! I am down 15 pounds since the DIEP! I joined the thread E-LAB which has a bunch of gals losing weight over there, so if you want...jump over there too! Maybe it will be inspiring?
-
Cake.....15 lbs is great...now you can add that lb # to your name !! I had no idea what edamame was....just thought it was a good substitute for peanuts and this one gal at the office who is very health conscious was eating it all the time and saying how filling it was. But it was not cheap. So I searched around and found that the Amish guy on the way home sells it at their store and you could get these little bags of it by the pound for much less than what they charged for the fancy packaged type with a lable that Kroger and other places sold. I was eating it ALL the time.....whenever I was hungry would have a handful. Then one day I was reading the ingredients. It said roasted edamame (green soy) and salt. So in other words I was eating straight soy. I had seen the edamame in the pods and guess I thouht it was some sort of a pea or a bean or something. How much damage this does if I am estrogen + I have no idea, but I am sure I was overdoing it.
-
Wow! I never knew that! I am so glad you told me. While watching food network, I saw some recipes with edamame and was considering trying it. Now...forget it!
-
Wow, Jo! How did you find out originally that you were sensitive to magnesium? It figures that you took Nexium and then to find out it's Magnesium!!!! UGH.

http://www.alternative-medicine-digest.com/health-benefits-of-magnesium.html
Always check with your doctor before trying anything you read here. Everyone is different, and what might be good for some people might be bad for you, considering your medical history and medications.
Health professionals are trying to educate the public about the health benefits of magnesium. According to Dr. Nan Kathryn Fuchs, who publishes the Women's Health Letter newsletter, it's not more calcium you need for stong bones; it's magnesium. Although the government has raised the RDA for calcium from 500 milligrams to 1,000 milligrams a day, and U.S. women have one of the highest levels of calcium intake in the world, osteoporosis has gone up instead of down. Fuchs (no relation to this writer) says that the problem isn't too little calcium but too much. In order to be absorbed, she says, calcium must be taken with magnesium, yet experts estimate that most American women are deficient in magnesium.
What happens to that unabsorbed calcium? It gets stuck in your muscles, where it can cause cramps and even fibromyalgia; it gets stuck in your joints, where it can cause arthritis; it gets stuck in your kidneys, where it can form kidney stones; it gets stuck in your arteries, where it causes the plaque that contributes to heart disease.
and then there's this:

JO, my twin - whatever are we going to do with you????
I'm still at the 10-12 lb weight loss. Trying to figure out a way to jump-start the body again (and, no JO, not going to try your method!)

Good morning!
I was reading this thread and wanted to "weigh in" on a couple of topics. The first is soy. Yes, this one is really difficult as in all sorts of snacks, and in particular, those with protein. So the majority of energy bars.
This is a major issue with me, as I do long distance cycling, so need to take things with me that I can eat. You burn something like 1800 calories doing a three hour ride, which I do most weekends. You have to replace some of this calorie burn or you "bonk" (seriously run out of energy). Thankfully, there some fruit and nut concoctions out there. One is Larabars, which I am adding to my stash of stuff I carry with me. And then there are whey protein based products.
I get really hungry if I don't eat enough protein, so another thing to think about. Often fuel with eggs prior to starting out.
The other thing I want to stress is the need to rev up the metabolism. So both some sort of cardio (including walking!) and strength training to build muscle and tone up.
Clothes fit better too
Hope you are out there enjoying the spring sunshine.

I went to WW tonight and was ready for them to say up .5 pounds or you put on a pound as they usually do, but low and behold the lady at the scale said I was down 3.2. At first I was ecstatic, but then I started thinking Hmmmm, the main SE of Megace is weight gain so what does this mean? I did not do anything different this week than I have been doing so can't explain why this week was different. All I know is that I am going to have to stay on a diet for a long long time to eat all the Fiber One bars, All Bran crackers, Quaker Delilghts and Edy's sugar fruit bars that I have stocked up on....oh and popcorn...I have tons of the Jolly Time 1 pt. snack packs. I am staying away from things with massive amounts of soy like the soy burgers, roasted Edamame, soy nuts, etc, but my oncologist said there is a little of it in just about everything so I am not worrying unless it is one of the main ingredients.
Today for the lst time my hands were cramping up to the point where my fingers were sort of curling up....wonder if this is a diet issue? Oh, and I forget if I posted before that I got my cholesterol results and although my total is 191, my bad cholesterol is high. So far the cardiologist has not called me to discuss this, but I told the nurse that I am actually eating healthier than I have for a long long time.
-
I'm in too. Today I started really watching what I eat. Not watching it go in my mouth, but I have actually talked to food today. There was donuts and pound cake at work. I told them donuts I wasn't eating them because even though they taste yummy, they are not good for me. Today I did real good. I had oatmeal for breakfast, a few triscuits and carrots stix for snack in AM. Lunch it was turkey breast on whole wheat and a fiber bar. For snack in the afternoon an apple and for supper I had1/2 boiled chicken breast, two slices of farmers cheese (which is made with skim milk) and a hard boiled egg without the yoke. Me and DH went for a 1-1/2 mile walk plus we walk up a 1/4 mile hill that is so steep it is hard to walk down it. It really gets my heart pounding. I would like to lose 20 lbs would settle for 10. I put on weight since I quit smoking 1-1/2 years ago. I never had to diet before. I think this is harder then quitting smoking. We can do this.
-
Welcome KK and congrats on talking yourself out of those donuts. Sounds like a good workout as well. Keep it up.
Marybe, congrats on the 3.2 loss - girlfriend, embrace it. Sometimes we do things we don't realize that will take the ounces off - maybe you drank more water or didn't snack twice last week. Who knows but take it and run!
I'm still at the 10-12 lb loss - been there for weeks now - but the suit I wore today fit better, no straining. I do feel healthier so I'm a happy camper. Will be a happy RV'er if I can drop another 15 but the camper will suffice for now.

How is everyone doing? Losing weight, I hope. Yesterday I did good eating 1059 calories for the day. I haven't added up todays yet, but know that I am well under 1200. So how many carbs should we be eating to lose weight? I read that when dieting you should only have 50. Well that could be two items. Most everything has carbs in it. If I ate all the fruit and veggies that says I'm supposed to eat on the food pyramid, I'd be way over the carb limit of 50. Then I heard 40% of your carlorie intake. What are some of the foods that you eat. I need ideas.
-
Glad you only need ideas - I need willpower. I've gotten my exercising going great but my eating is still wayyyyyyyyyyyyy off. Guess you have to be ready to make that change, just like everything else. < sigh >
-
patoo: I agree that you have to motivated with this whole diet/exercise thing. All I know is I'm going to the shore this summer and need to lose at least ten lbs. Three weeks ago I got blood work done for cholesterol. That came back fine, but my thyroid is a little low. So now I'm on medication for that. I think that med is make me gain weight along with the tamoxifen. Some days, I just want to say, "I give up, up going to eat whatever I want". Well then I think I'll get too overweight. Then some days, I say "I just won't eat anything". Well I know that isn't going to work. I have to get my blood checked again in three weeks for my thyroid and I'm going to tell my doctor this med may be making me gain weight. I just can't win. I told my husband after one week I'll weigh myself. I will be good for one week and watch what I eat, and we are walking over a mile every night. I just bet you I don't lose anything. I'll be so mad and upset.
-
Well, I must be doing something right. I lost weight. 2 lbs since weighing in on Tuesday. Now that I have lost some it doesn't seem so hard not eating "good food".
-
Yes, seeing the scale go down is the best motivator of all.
-
Where is everyone! No one is posting. Did everyone lose all their weight they wanted to. That is Great! Now I know that didn't happen. Come here for support, let us know how much you are losing so we can congratulate you, Post what you are eating and give everyone ideas. I know it is hard to find good food to eat that is healthy. I lost 1 lb. I am down 3 since Tuesday.
Marybe-Good for you on your WW weigh in.
Jo-5:How are you doing?
Cake: you were really losing after surgery. Good for you!
Patoo-Still exercising?
-
KK, yes still exercise but the scale is not moving. Of course I need to do a better job with my eating. Good thing though that the scale is not going up and my clothes are fitting better.
I ditto KK, this is for support. Don't feel you can't post if you are not losing as the motivation happens when you know you are not alone. Come out, come out - whereever you are.
-
Hey all, have not been losing anything lately although have gotten back on the "excercise wagon". I just made my appointment for my physical with my Dr., so will now (hopefully) be able to start watching what I eat again. Appointment is for May 4 (so I have some time), but am going in on Monday for my 1st Mammogram and am very nervous, so hope I can stay away from "bad" thing this week-end!!! Will try to post regularly again, cause it WILL remind me to eat better!!
-
Hi everyone! Been so busy, just catching up. I lost another 1/2 pound, but my official weigh in is tomorrow morning, so I'm hoping for another 1/2 lb, LOL! If not, I'm sticking with the 1/2! How's everyone else doing that didnt post yet?
Not too late to start over!

I will tell you some delicious things I have found to eat. There is a whole grain hard roll that is made by Alexia and it is only one point on WW. It's 100 cal, 3 grams fiber and 1 gr fat which is how they come up with the one point. I love starch and that roll just hit the spot tonight. Also Fiber One makes a lowfat cottage cheese and you can eat more of it that regular low fat cottage cheese because it's got fiber and most cottage cheese doesn't ....the same holds true for FIber One yogurt. I am learing that fiber is the key. Oh and there are these Vitatop muffins and muffin tops that are absolutely delicious and only 100 cals and 1 point on WW..1 gr fat and I think 6 grams of fiber. I like the cranbran one with my coffee in the morning. The chocolate one is just like chocolate cake. They are not cheap, but I find them a lot better than the WW desserts. They are cheapest at Mejier. Now the downside to all this fiber is it makes some people gassy and also you might find you spend more money on toilet paper. I have so many fiber bars and jollytime snack pack popcorn and Quaker Delights snacks in my cupboards that I am going to have to stay on this diet for at least another 6 months. I do find that when I am on a diet I am a compulsive food shopper....if it's on sale and is a low cal product, I HAVE to buy it. Eating healthy is Not cheap!!
-
I am heavier than I have ever been in my life. The arimidex isn't the only culprit, this past winter I have gotten home from work and snuggled on the couch with the fire. I feel so fat I can't stand to look at myself. So I need some motivation. I eat junk food and do not like anything healthy. There has got to be a way to get this thing back on track. My belly is like a baloon and I feel terrible!! Also, prrimary doc says cholestorol is too high. Diet and exercise!! I used to be healthy fit. Please help me somebody!! Thanks xo
-
Lovemyfam, There are some good junk foods......like popcorn and there is this carmel corn snack with nuts and some of the combos are with berries called Smart Fook, and I am really hooked on some of the fiberbars which fill you up and taste good. You can learn to like healthy food....I was never really big on fruit, liked it, but just ate much of it because I was too full from eating bad food. Now I find there is nothing better than an orange and latley the stores have had some really good ones. Just ease yourself into eating healthy and you might find you like it and for sure you will feel better.
-
I didn't lose anything yesterday. I should get one of the scales that shows the 1/10th's. That way I'll know how close I am to the next low number. I like to eat anything that is 100 calories. I generally eat the same food and I really don't get tired of eating it. I always eat oatmeal for breakfast except Sundays. And at lunch I usually have one of those Arnolds slim buns and turkey breast with a slice of farmers cheese and some pickles. I am trying to stay at 1100 to 1300 calories/day. I love those Fiber plus bars. I do eat a lot of fiber. Hopefully by tomorrow I'll lose a lb. Going to a car cruise tonight at a Sonics. Burgers, french fries and milkshakes. But I think I'll go to the subway and get the low cal sub. Maybe I'll sneak in a shake. Chocolate/PB are great.
-
Hi, all! Checking in! I lost a 1/2 pound this week...would have liked a pound, but I'll take anything. I've been eating well and exercising, but I'm on Tamoxifen, so I wonder if that's slowing things down a bit. Oh well...my first goal is eating better...second is getting thinner.
Lovingmyfam...what helped me get back on track (and I am the WORST dieter ever...I didnt lose anything until my surgery in March, and I'm the one who started this thread!) was just eating 3 small meals a day and a fruit or yogurt snack if I needed one. I didnt worry what I put on the plate. It really helped! Sometimes dieting just makes us more obsessive and we need a break. Just an idea if you would like to try it.
JO--prayers for a few more steps in your stride today, LOL!
-
Okay, saying this and maybe it will help me to start following it one day as well. Diets don't work; changing our eating habits is what we have to do. Eating 1200 calories a day won't work if most of those calories (like mine) are carbs. I love bread and even though 99% of my bread is brown and wheat, if I eat too much of it...
I overdid it today - probably 1500 calories. I bet 1000 of those were carbs! So, I don't expect to see my scale go donw tomorrow and just have to get better about my food choices. (there's a reason I haven't joined the E-LAB thread yet!). I find I may eat pretty good for a few days and then fall off into bad habits again. < sigh >
-
Don't weigh every day....it's better to weigh just once a week. The scale can go up 2 lbs in a day just because you ate too much salt and are retaining water....just as in the lst week of WW people always say I lost 3.4 lbs or I lost 2.8 lbs or even as much as 5....but they really did not lose that much in actual fat or body weight, half of it was just water. DON"T weigh every day. Listen to me, giving diet advice, when I am not even doing that well myself. But I do know back from when I did used to be able to take it off really easily what works and what you are supposed to do.
Boy do I know what you mean about dieting making you more obsessive about food, Cake....I think about it way more than I ever did. I have enough food in my cupboards to feed the neighborhood if all the grocery stores failed to open....providing they would eat fiber bars, fish, fruit and veggies and popcorn. And Patoo I also am a carb junkie and always have been....I could say no to the hot fudge sundae, but would never turn down a potato. I can't think of any way you fix potatoes, that I don't love....the same goes for pasta.
-
My problem is that I like ALL food!!! I need to keep track of what I put in my mouth again!! Portion size is my biggest problem (amongst all the smaller problems like choices)!
