Anyone Starting Chemo Jan. 2010?

Hi Everyone--seems like lots of good news--negative BRCA tests, CT scans, etc. And some of you moving onto the next phase of treatment--either new chemo drug, rads, or recon. Having just got through my Taxotere experience, please IM me if you want to know how it was for me and what helped. Interesting that one of your doctors said it was the least likley to cuse neuropathy--not what I was told. Lean--Bless your heart: working 4 hours and small kids on Taxotere.
As for me, I am 8 days past my last Taxotere/Cytaxin, and it was a very rough week! I am finally emerging from the fog--still not myself, but getting there. My stomach is improving, but not back to normal. I lost 6 pounds in the last week. Yay for the weight loss, but not the way I'd want to do it again. Anyway, I'll use that as a jumpstart with a much -needed loss! Hope everyone enjoys their Easter holiday. Take care!

1marmalade1: Treatment day Thurs., Neulasta Fri., I'm day 2 now. He increased my decadron for the 1st taxotere so I was on a steroid high yesterday. Today I'm back to wimpy. Lots of digestive issues. I also got a shot of Anasp for my hemoglobobin which was low. Aloxi, decadron, benedryl, anasp and taxotere. Some muscle aches, joint aches, manageable, no appetite today. Trying to chug a lot of water. Thanks for asking......are you officially done?
-
bubbalu: Don't know if I'm "official" yet until I meet with onc on 13th - I did 2 A/C out of 4 (my tumour showed no response) and then 4 taxotere. If onc decides to hit me with another 2 rounds of Taxotere, I'll take it - might as well give it everything we've got!! Meet with surgeon on 20th to discuss options and surgery date. Just want to get through rads before summer runs out and I miss all the time at my cottage! Yes, keep chugging water (energy drinks are apparently good too). Take any pain meds - don't suffer. Appetite should be back soon - usually crappy mouth taste goes away within a few days, at least it did with me. Don't forget to rinse mouth with baking soda/water or Biotene (I used that - great stuff - no mouth sores and freshens mouth for you). Try lemon in your water (or maybe even lime) - a little easier to take than straight water all the time.
-
vegasdiva-I'm doing good and thanks for asking. I've been keeping up with my fellow Jan sis updates but not posting. I had an MRI on Monday and fortunately most of my tumors responded very well to A/C. While most of the individual tumors have been reduced by 50%, the spread is still 13 cm. I start my 12 weekly taxol/herceptin next Friday. I dread going back to the infusion center. I really struggled with nausea and vomiting after each a/c so the thought of the infusion center triggers a gag reflex.
Welcome newcomers-I echo the comments from others. Sad you had the need to find us but glad you did.

1marmalade1: You know one of the nurses told me not to take any Vit C. or Vit E and not to drink any herbal tea. What gives with that? She said they don't know the effect herbs might have on the chemo. All the good stuff has antioxidants and vitamins and ginsing, especially cold green tea with ginsing. There's something about lemon that I can't tolerate thru this. If I have it in any form the taste stays in my mouth for days. And I love lemon. I'll have to get some Biotene, right now I'm using salt water rinses at bedtime. What kind of energy drinks? Thanks for all the good tips! I agree with you if it's 2 more needed go for it. I just hope my surgeon doesn't go on a long summer vacation I want it in July so I can get the rads done in time to go to Bar Harbor ME in Oct. That's my long term goal.

I have a question. For all of you on taxol did they give you meds to take three the night before and then three the morning of? I will have my first Taxol on Monday.
surgery went good. It will be 3 weeks on Tuesday since it, Any tips on getting fills and trying to heal up you scars from the ? Macsctomys hanks in advance!
-
Hi Mom2bnegative,
I'm doing my 4th Taxol on Tuesday (weekly) and they do not give me meds before or the day of. I get all my pre-Taxol meds during the infusion - benedryl, steroid, pepsid, etc. prior to the Taxol. The only thing I'm doing now is the Neupogen shots trying to rebuild my white blood cell count. Ask what the meds are for and why you take them -- I'm assuming they are the anti-nausea, steroids that I'm getting in the iv plus anything you might personally need.
Bubbalu - the reason for the anti-oxidants is that the chemo works as an oxidizing agent and any vitamins - like C and A - can work against the chemo. Green Tea is also anti-oxidizing. Why go through the chemo drill (and all the SEs) if something you eat or drink can mitigate it working 100%? I figure all that stuff will be great for me after chemo to help me rebuild and stay strong and healthy.
I'm so happy for all of you who are moving on from the chemo part of this treatment. I still have 9 more weeks on Taxol to go. I'm cherishing Tuesday, June 1st because that's my last chemo day. As soon as my white count is up, my bronchitis totally gone, I'm going to go back to work part-time. I miss it and feel like I've been gone a long, long time. We have Friday's off from Memorial Day to Labor Day, so I'm figuring 2-1/2 days of work a week through the summer (rads every day in July and most of August). I can do that!
It's a quiet Easter morning at my house - but my 3 year old grandson will be up soon and we'll be looking for those dyed eggs the Easter Bunny left - then dressed, church, brunch and he'll be off with his Uncle to another party and I'll be taking a nap! My husband and I are going on a date today - so, I'm getting dressed up, putting on Colleen (the wig) and going out for dinner. It's a beautiful morning here.
I wish you all a wonderful Sunday and a blessed week!
Hugs, Pat -
Bubbalu: My onc said Gatorade drinks are OK as a sub for water. You just have to learn to go with what you can handle. I had a slice of bacon yesterday - couldn't even taste it - but the yogurt I had after tasted just like what it was - blueberry yogurt. Funny how the taste buds go through this. Nobody said anything to me about the Vits. or the green tea, however, a BC friend of mine said she drank a lot of peppermint tea, and she said this also helped with the taste buds.
Happy Easter to all - hopefully a day of no SE's for everybody!

I find out tomorrow when my surgery date is. My mom made it up from Florida. She'll be helping out. My sciatic nerve is acting up for some reason. I get shooting pains in my hip and leg whenever I sit or stand up. Once I'm there, I'm fine. I honestly can't remember the last time I had a day where I felt even just ok. But its pretty sad because I'll take the sciatic deal over the never ending flu feeling.
Oh well, had a good Easter. Ate too much food. I seriously need to get back to eating better.
Good luck to everyone with chemo this week and congrats to those that have rounded the corner.
-
Hi Ladies, hope everyone had a nice weekend. I can't believe I did the thing Paxton warned about way back on probably page 1 or 2 or this thread. I singed the bangs on my wig when I went to take my sweet potatoes out of the oven yesterday. I was in such a hurry, I totally forgot to stand back when I opened the oven door. And of course, I had to be wearing my favorite wig when it happened. I can notice it and someone at work only noticed it when I mentioned it and she felt the hair. Oh well, what can you do, just laugh and add it to the list of SE!
Burnt Bangs!!

Been keeping up with everyone. Just frustrated with this whole chemo thing and my last visit with my doctor. I really like him, but he changed the plan and it frustrated me. My last AC made me so depressed! Not sure why! Today my hubby surprised me by telling me he is taking me to Kauai for spring break on Friday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't wait to shop in an American grocery store! I know most of you are probably thinking, "She's thinking about shopping in Hawaii?!!!!" Yep! It's the closest thing to the US for me and my hubby didn't think I could take a flight to the States. Only 7 hours to Hawaii, so it's do-able! Just had to share my great news!
-
vegas, I knowmine does I start crying and stuff just walking back here!
-
Congratulations Grace. Hope you have a great time. Its normal to have depressive episodes any time during this process, but it will happen toward the end and even after which I don't think people are always expecting. You feel like you should be ecstatic being done, but emotions start to come out, especially if everything from your dx went fast and sent you into one foot in front of the other mode. Anyway, let go and have a great time, Grace.
I'm getting nervous waiting to meet with the surgeon and my hip is killing me but the sun is shining.
vegas: sorry to hear about your wig
. I was really careful with the oven but could have kicked myself when I sat in front of the woodstove with the door open looking in. But it happens and all you can do is laugh.
-
Paxton, sory about the sciatic nerve--that'spainful. Maybe a nice massage would help? Yo are so right about emotions coming out after chemo is over. I think we are so overwelmed by the impact of chemo while we're going through it that we don't have any mental space to deal with emotions as well, so they get put on hold. Then comes that quiet space when whemo is done and everyone else is moving on. Here we are with a lap full of unsresolved emotions that need their due attention. It's difficult to describe to someone else, except for me, it's almost like have post-traumatic stress disorder.
VegasDiva--never thought about burning my wig. I'm usually sohot in the kitchen that I don't wear a wig when I'm cooking--good reminder though. I hope it's not too noticable.
Grace--a trip to Hawaii sounds lovely. You have a great hubby! Enjoy your trip and for shopping for the simple stuff you can't get where you live.I know when I go to England, I buy food items that I can't get here and people wonder why I would bother to purchase my favorite things that are as common place as meatloaf over there, but nonexistent over here.

Was finally making my way out of the woods from the intense Taxotere SEs when I had a Zometa infusion. Was hit with fever, chills and flu like symptoms....apparently there is a first dose syndrome from Zometa. They don't expect it again and I'm infused only once every six months with this drug.
Not sure it is relevant but since someone asked - with Taxotere they doubled the steroids dose. Took Dexamethasone the day before, the day of, and the day post-chemo. The crash off the steroid was a little rough...physically and emotionally. The onc explained that the steroid (in this case) was to control the bone and muscle pain and prevent the "allergic type" SEs. It was not for nausea as this is usually not an issue with Taxotere. I did not take Emend as for the FEC doses but did take the Neulasta.
My eyebrows and eyelashes have thinned out considerably and not quite symmetrically! I did not think this would happen to me...or I would have been more attentive about learning how to pencil eyebrows at the Look Good Feel Better class. Oh well!
I was able to enjoy the Easter weekend. Had a good Easter family dinner at my cousin's house and my sense of taste was at least partially there. The weather was spectacular...sunny and warm and at least a whole month off from what is "normal" for here. No Easter egg hunt in the snow this year and they were able to grill the Ham and lamb on the BBQ! Will enjoy it while it lasts.
This week is for recovery before my dose of Tax next week. I need to stock my fridge and do some cooking in advance!
It is still weeks away, but I am really looking forward to the end of chemo. If there are post-chemo blues...I'm planning to combat it with some summer fun, easing back to work and getting myself in better physical shape. I look frightful now!

Like pagowens- I just had my 3rd taxol and I get my meds the day of same as pagowens except instead of the pepcid I recieve zantac.
Fill advice- well I had no feeling so they just tell me to take deep breath and I never look while they stick the needle in. They know I'm a baby and don't want to watch - hence the "take a deep breath", and they just keep talking to me about stupid stuff.
I was fussy about what I put on my scar- they gave the lotions I could use. I stayed away from soy and vit. E lotions which was hard. Instead I did Almond oil from the heath food store and 100 %Cocoa butter from CVS- it comes in a container that looks like a huge chap stick- it's by cococare- website cococare.com
- made in USA
! I think my scarring is ok I did post pics on my blog you can check out-
http://weddingbliss110108.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html#8735849066432040588
I did a post on what goes on at my fill appointment.
Hope that helps- best of luck!
-
I hope everyone had a nice Easter!
I had my 3rd Taxol today and the nurse tried to use a little vain instead of just going for the big one that is begging for it and well I always wondered how I would know somehting was wrong with my IV- well I found out today. I nearly jumped out of the seat when she started my saline. Any how she went back the the big vein and all went well.
Tomorrow I plan to go to work because Wed is when my SE start- which aren't that bad. I love not being as tired as I was on AC.
Here's a question- Sex Drive. I'm lacking and it's painful- any suggestions.......before my husband loses it.LOL I am going through menopause- in case you couldn't guess. I'm just glad my husband is still interested after the 20lb weight gain and hair loss! Is anyone have any knowledge about menopause in the way it happens for us during chemo? Is it different than normal menopause- I thought I heard it's a little harsher?
Well sweet dreams girls!
-
Hello Sisters,
I'm not doing that good with Taxol or maybe it is the shingles. I don't know, but tomorrow I'll see my onc to figure out what's going on. On the end of last week I started having bad leg pain, couldn't sleep, Tylenol and Hydrocodone( left from the operation) didn't help. The doctor on call prescribed me oxycodone, but when I took 2 pills on Sunday morning, I got dizzy and nauseous.
Last week I had the appt with the radiation oncologist and he recommended radiations because the tumor was multifocal. So a month after my last Taxol I shold have the exchange operation and a month after this operation I should start radiations for 5 weeks.
The only good news is my daughter's graduation, from University of Miami, mid May. So I should get better to be able to travel to Miami in a month and a bit.Wish you all a good week!
-
Hey dgirl,
Sorry you have to be here but so glad you found us. I, too am finding that everyone else is ready to get on with their lives after I finish chemo. Excuse me for having cancer, I'll just get out of your way now.
Okay, rant over. I've just completed #5 of 6 TCH and except for the fatigue and slight nausea I feel okay. I'll be looking at six weeks of radiation and a year of Herceptin after the last TCH. Please feel free to send a private message if you want to compare notes . . . believe me, I've got nothing to hide!
-
Actually then are anit meds that they siad it will helpe not diefrom the taxol. I take hte benedryl, steriodsand anit nausua but still take thses drughs before had, It is late I willge the nmaes tomorrow night and look them up

I wAS going to aske about the sex drive myslef. I want it but we just can't do it. He has seen me bald, he helps me cleam my boobs after my surgery but I am just as dry as a well just dry. What do you grls do? want it cause I know it will help both of us but what to do??
-
recames- Thanks so much- when someone rants I feel better about my rants!!
michelleNJ
I found warm water to help - like a bath. Also I was a big tylenol person, but was told that motrin sometimes works better. Also they told me to take a night tylenol to help sleep, but for me it had the opposite effect I couldn't sleep. If you have someone a light leg massage feels great too.
I hope you feel better. Shingles are one of the most painful things you can get my mom had them. That has to do with nerves as well so you are probably experiencing pain way beyond any of us. You are in my thoughts.

Well I read in my Netowrk of Strength- Guide to Breast Cancer - some tips on intimacy:
1st if you are not ready wait
Touching and massage, is a little more important now for us and we may even want to read a good book on sexuality together it also had other suggestions.
Buy some scented oils or lotions.
Get yourself a few nice slips- I did do this and it helps because I have 1 breast gone and I'm still not ready to go topless during sex. After a while someone said you will feel better and toss the slip.
Dryness is often caused my the premature menopause and the drop off of estrogen which also reduces sex drive. "To help this condition you can apply ointments and lubricants tow to three times each week and just prior to intercourse. Ointments made with vitamin A and D can thichen and moisten the vaginal lining and reduce discomfort and bleeding. They are available in drug stores and health food stores without perscription." I myself like some others with estrogen postive will def be careful to get lubricrants with estrogen. BUT you maybe someone who estrogen is ok and if that is the case you can get an estrogen based cream which will probably work well after menopause. BUT you need to check with your DOCTOR. The article also said "Studies about estrogen supplement s and breast cancer have been inconclusive." That is something I will ask my doctor about at my last chemo app.
Let's not forget- maybe we should wear our wig and throw on some make-up
...lol by the time I reach bed it all comes off.
When I called Network of Strength they sent me out this little booklet and you reach them at 1-800-221-2141- they were great and they are there to talk 24/7.
I guess after work I'll head to the drug store.

Hi Girls--no sex drive here either! i have absolutel no interest--yes chemopause has a lot to do with it, but I think the stress of everything has a part in it too. DH are going away this weekend about a 5 our drive--for a funeral, not romantic, but we'll be away,in a romantic California wine country inn--and maybe??????
-
Sex drive. I was waiting for this topic to come up. While I have none in my chemopause state, my husband is obsessed with my new overall baldness. I'm thinking about hiring him a concubine to take the pressure off. LOL.
-
Hi all,
Sex drive - none for me either. And, yes, post-menopause you get a whole lot drier than you were - so, I was already needing KY jelly lubricant - which works pretty darn good. The problem now is that my head hits the pillow and - pow - I'm asleep! My DH winds down watching tv in bed and then.... But, when you're already snoring...nothing much happens. I need to find deliberate time when we can get intimate (I also have that 3 year old in the house - makes life less spontaneous). We've done that a couple times through this - but that's it. Would like it to be different - but I just don't have the energy right now.
Had my 4th Taxol today. My white and red blood cells are up, my bronchitis is clearing (but still a little bit there, so that's worrisome), and I won't need Neupogen this week - maybe next week.
I'm off to the Look Good Feel Good (3rd try) to get some stuff with which to draw back my eyebrows. It's hard giving my husband the alluring eye, when the image looks like the sister of Six Flags Parks bald guy mascot.
Ciao!
Pat

Yeah, I was wondering if any of you were having the same issue. Chemopause is definately an issue but the fact that I have no hair (anywhere) and deflated boobs with sagging skin (delayed recon with nipple and skin sparring mastecomy), I am not a pretty sight. I don't feel good about myself and I have no idea how he feels. The stress from the treatments and my lack of income adding to the issues.
On a better note, I just got back from my 3rd Taxol infusion. It went really well. The only difficult part is getting the benadryl and steroids and now that I know how it feels it is easier to tolerate. I have only one more treatment and then I am DONE!!! I am so excited to stop getting all of these drugs but wondering how I will feel when I am done and not focused on fighting cancer. I am doing the 3-day walk in late September so I will focus on training for that and getting in much better shape. I'd love to lose 30 pounds by the time of the walk (that would be a little more than a pound a week which is doable if I put my mind to it).
-
Woke up with a bladder infection this morning, so now I'm on antibiotics. Doesn't help with generating an amorous mood!
Issymom--one ste closer. I am walking about a 1 1/2 mile daily and will kick it up to 3 miles next week for my training for the 3-day.
-
Hi Ladies-
Wow- miss a day or two and I missed a lot! I can now say that I am officially PFC (post final chemo) My onco, said that 4 taxotere/carboplatin treatments were sufficient! Yeah! I will continue on my herceptin tx for one year. I was rec'ng them weekly during chemo (started 1/12) and will continue until Jan 2010 every three weeks.
Next week I meet with the rad onco to see what her thoughts are on radiation. I am praying that I won't need rads, I started with bilat in Dec and then onto chemo in Jan. We didn't think I was going to need chemo since it was DCIS. Surprised us all when the path report came back INVASIVE, so you can understand why I am not sure what's going to happen on this next leg of the journey.
Talked to my gyno about the intimacy issue, it does scare me a bit as she did say that it is a use it or lose it kindof deal. The longer we wait the harder it can become! (great no stress there!)- She said to get KY (with E) or Astroglide (I'm guessing a guy named that second one as it sounds like some sort of a super hero). Anyway - she said that both have more "staying power". We haven't tried them as I am usually going to bed by 7 pm and the kiddos are still up!
Glad to hear that many are now brca negative! Hoping that that good news holds... I will be going in for that test soon. Have to meet with the genetics counselor first! Oh will the fun ever end?!
Have an awesome day!
-Sher

LRG: sorry to hear you have a UTI. Always fun to have extra crap to deal with. I kept getting yeast infections from the anitbiotics. Between the chemopause and that, sex is such a far off concept. Bleh
-
paxton, know what you mean: what with my rectal bleeding, and I also have had a couple of yeast infections, now a UTI--with antibiotics, so I'll probably get ANOTHER yeast infection!!! Let's just say I have very UNHAPPY nether regions!
What's a girl to do? Also, have had a cold this week, and started coughing up "stuff" yesterday, so I think I have bronchitis as well. Compound that with as much interest in sex as flying to the friggin moon! Oy Gevalt!
Just Sher--good to here you won't be having anymore TC. Praying for you that you don't need rads. Astroglide??? Astroglide??? I would be embarrassed buying anything with a name like that! I was a teacher and school administrator in my community for 22 years. Some of the clerks in the local pharmacies and grocery stores are my former students! I'm going to have to go out of town to buy the stuff--like REALLY FAR AWAY! Can you imagine the gossip? "Mrs. R.G. was seen buying sex aides in the local CVS!" OMG!!
Pagowens: Hope the Look Good Feel Better workshop actually happens for you this time. I just finished using the facial moisturizer they gave me. I loved it so much, and went online to see if I could find where to buy it: $42.50 for an ounce!!! I guess I won't be getting any this month, since my pay/disability insurance, etc is 1/2 my regular monthly salary now.
Nkrun--"my husband is obsessed with my new overall baldness. I'm thinking about hiring him a concubine to take the pressure off. LOL." You made me laugh!!! I didn't think about the oerall baldness thing, but I personally find it a bit disconcerting i'm not used tobe hairless in certain places! Was always too chicken to even consider doing a Brazilian! As for the concubine--good idea, but maybe a really unattratcive, unskilled one so he wants to come back to me when I'm ready LOL!!
