Hold on.
Time to put the sweats and bunny slippers on and get comfy.
This thread is like an island in a sea of insanity.

Thanks for the links, Elizabeth. Coulter really does raise challenging freedom-of-speech issues. I am a firm believer in free speech but it has to be measured by a strong understanding of the responsibilities associated with that freedom.
"Freedom" is a big buzz word these days among the far right. But I don't hear them talk a whole lot about responsibility.
I'm getting preachy in my old age!
-
I think if many in the American media and politics would use more restraint, didn't lie and exaggerate, IOW act like civil adults, a lot more could have been achieved with the Healthcare bill. Imagine, all the time wasted on hate-mongering and outright lies could have been spent on constructive dialogue.
-
I used to be very optimistic about the future of my country. But I don't see how it's possible to have a civilized, productive society if the basics of honesty, truthfulness, and factualness are missing. I find that astounding.
Okay, I'm depressed now and need to go to bed.
Good luck tomorrow with your appt. One of those rare occasions when you won't have some hunky guy to drool over!
-
I am so proud to be Canadian. I am so lucky to be Canadian.
-
Thanks for the Coulter clips, Elizabeth!
I'm off to bed, too. (Though maybe I'd better read a little first. I wouldn't want to drift off to sleep with Ann Coulter in my head. Ugh.)

Coulter cancelled her scheduled appearance in Ottawa, after vigorous campus protests made her conclude that perhaps it wouldn't be in her best interests
. She also said that the U of Ottawa must be terribly "bush-league" (okay, don't take that the wrong way!!!) and that entrance levels to the University must be exceedingly low...... Gee, if students don't want to hear her, they must be REALLY stoopid....... Ezra Levant, a well-known far-right conservative, was the person responsible for asking her to include the U. of Ottawa on her campus tour.
With freedom comes responsibility -- absolutely! But Coulter, Limbaugh, Beck et al are not taking any responsibility....
-
She does spew hatred that's for sure. I don't think the Provost (or whoever sent the email) should have sent the email to her though. He should have just let her come and stick her foot into it. What's with these ultra-right-wing people wanting to speak here -- first Palin, now her...perhaps they know we'd be outraged by their speeches and it guarantees them lots of airtime.
-
It was the V-P Academic who warned her about our hate laws, and I suspect he did it because he was nervous about the behaviour of the students who had vociferously complained about her appearance, and just wanted to avoid the brouhaha which was sure to ensue!
You may be right about Coulter and Palin knowing they'd get lots of airtime. I suspect they're just doing it for the money, though. Coulter spoke at Western and is on her way to Calgary.
Elizabeth, how are you doing?? Caring friends want to know
-
Well, just trot on over to the What Americans Thinks thread. Canada doesn't have freedom of speech so they kicked Coulter out! I'm just stirring the pot! Love your thread because you all are so nice to each other. I was hoping both Coulter and Palin would move to Canada! Edited for typo.
-
Allison, some people don't understand the difference between free speech and speech which incites hatred. Our broadcasters are also obigated to tell the truth, and to "make good" if they don't. I like these laws
and can only wish that the U.S. had similar ones. And please don't wish Palin, Coulter etc. on us -- already Bachmann is too close geographically
.
Hugs, Linda
p.s. Those same people need to read the latest about acts of violence and terrorism -- it's already started, and lives of Dems and their families are being threatened. Check out ThinkProgress.com It's truly frightening....

Rico and I are seeking to put the craziness in our rear-view mirrors and join our friends in Canada.
Here's our immigration plan: We drive up to a point three miles shy of the border, then crawl on our bellies, dragging Rico's bunnies and my guinea pig behind (all wearing mini bullet-proof vests, of course), dodging bullets and flying doughnuts and whatnot.
Who's willing to meet us at the border and hide us in their basements?
-
Hey, I'm closest to the border -- y'all can stay with me! (see how we Canucks pick up on your lingo??!!) Better still, bring your rubber duckies and float across the river (under cover of night) but beware, there's a mighty strong current - a liberal current, of course LOL
Campbell Brown just covered the hate stuff on CNN. I'm just really aghast at all this
-
Is there any place in Canada that's somewhat temperate in the winter?
-
Victoria, BC. Beautiful, and they have flowers blooming year-round!
-
LOL enjoyful...I was also going to suggest BC. Mind you, Montreal had a great winter! Very little snow and mild temperatures. Anyway, it may be cold up here, and we do have free speech
-
Great minds think alike - health care for all, free speech, and BC!
-
LOL enjoyful! Don't forget the bagels! It is worth coming to Montreal just for that!
I can house a few of you in my basement. Tell me when you are coming!
-
Oh my goodness YES. I had a Montreal bagel for dinner!
-
So, I was driving to Lansing today, listening to the Michigan State student radio station, and what should come on but a song by an Indie band called "The Thermals" titled "Canada." I tried to find a video to link to, or even the full lyrics, but no dice. Here, though, is a story about the song's origins that gives you the general idea:
"Sitting in the van in Buffalo, Thermals guitarist and singer Hutch Harris picked up a guitar and strummed a few chords, and sang a few lines about going to CANADA. Kathy Foster walked up and sang "Whoa Whoa-Oh Whoa!" as if on cue. Drummer Westin Glass set a fat beat to it at soundcheck et voila, "Canada". Seriously, I'm not making this up. I mean, listen to the song. It doesn't sound like it took The Thermals longer than half an hour to write "Canada". But therein lies its brilliance! Totally off the cuff, yet totally sincere, "Canada" is an instant classic, a raucous, joyous ode to our brothers and sisters to the north. CANADA! Where everyone is funny, friendly and ready to have a beer or seven with you. CANADA! Where we'll have everything we need! CANADA! The country we aspire to be."
Linda (who's headed for Canada this weekend, as a matter of fact)
EDITED because I'm a compulsive editor and always find something stupid in my first drafts.
Diagnosis: 1/15/2008, IDC, 1cm, Stage IIa, Grade 1, 1/14 nodes, ER+/PR+, HER2- -
Linda, haven't heard the song but I bet they were crossing the border to pick up a case of real beer
!
Have a great weekend -- over here!
-
You guys are making me hungry. I love those chewy, smoky Montreal bagels. And I think I like smoked meat better than pastrami, which is saying a lot. And the black currant ice cream at the ice cream place (forget its name) in the Jean-Talon market.
Just thinking about Montreal is enough to make me gain ten pounds.

Oh, BC. Isn't that close to Russia? Could I see it from my porch?
-
Here's a place to listen to it:
http://www.weallwantsomeone.org/2010/02/09/stream-the-thermals-canada/
I like it! Thanks for the recommendation!!
-
LOL @ Alpal. You might be too far south to see BC, but I bet you could see Cuba!
-
Alpal -- move up here and you'll actually be able to GO to Cuba, and see it up close!!
Speaking of songs: I'm watching (okay, listening to) our closest PBS TV station (WNED Buffalo) and they're doing a special on songs of the '60's (yes, it's pledge week
). So... it occurs to me that what the U.S. needs about now is some good old-fashioned protest songs to re-mobilize all those college students and grads who helped vote in Pres. Obama. Just heard Barry McGuire singing "Eve of Destruction" (check out the lyrics in case you're too young to have ever heard it). Ah.....those were the days......
-
Any Americans crossing the border with DD coffee is more than welcome to stay with our family. If you do stop off at lindasa's place, ask her for some of her chocolate wine!
-
I have two bags of DD coffee in my cupboard! Chocolate wine...combining two miracle anti-oxidant foods in one?? I need some!
-
Great idea! Shall we meet at lindasa's? She is closer to the wineries.
