Ok I probably shouldn'y post this but if you have a sense of humor, you'll appreciate it.

This morning I read in the Calgary Herald about Ann Coulter's visit to the U of C. There were a few protesters holding signs . This one was funny

One young boy carried a homemade sign that read: "I don't have a camel or a flying carpet, can you lend me your broomstick?"

Pickle, thanks for posting that one -- I really needed a good laugh today!  By the way, there's an interesting article on the CBC website by a reporter (Neil MacDonald) who interviewed her a few years back. He did his homework before the interview and was all prepared to ask her serious  questions.  Turns out she didn't want to discuss them and left him with the distinct impression that she had found her publicity "niche" (making pots of money at it) and that he shouldn't take her seriously. The unfortunate thing, of course, is that her public persona and hateful utterances influence the not-too-bright and the folks who are always looking for someone/something to blame.

BTW, is there a thread over there that's gone missing?????

It's very odd - for me, it still shows up under "My Home."  (I just posted, in fact, chiming in after Patoo.)  But it doesn't show up if I go to the main menu. 

EDITED to add: Aha!  on the main page, it's now under "moderator generated messages and site announcements."  Perhaps that's kind of like being in a holding cell on death row?

Layne -- so glad you're back!  We know you've had a tough couple of weeks dealing with Mom, But wow -- she survived tetanus!  Her caregivers better watch out, and had better learn to let her have her way!!!  But it's probably going to be difficult for you until she comes to terms with hospice.  We're thinkin' of you, hon!  (BTW, you'll have to transfer all your funds and open an account at TD before they'll let you through)

Linda, thanks for figuring out where to find the mystery thread.   I swear "someone" just wants to pick a fight with you!  Could it be because you always have the answers, provided by more than one news source?  We have your back, always...

I'm a figure skating nut, so just finished watching a streaming of the ice dance free programme.  Davis and White (U.S. just incase you don't share my passion!) won the free, but our Cdn pair Virtue and Moir won the over-all.  They are all SO good -- and best friends too, sort of like us!

(Stupid question, but is there a competition going on right now, or is this from the Olympics?  I thought Virtue and Moir's exhibition performance at the Olympics was just about the most charming thing ever.)

World Championships.  Yep, they do train close to you -- Canton, I think.  My other passion is classical music, so I thought their performance to Mahler was sublime.

I've been reading the opinions of various journalists -- most of whom appear disgusted by the students' protests and the Provost for writing the letter explaining our hate laws.  What they seem to be forgetting is that Coulter/Levant decided to back out, apparently not too unhappily.  Anything for publicity....

BTW, does anyone besides me get fed up with media articles which say something along the lines of "The Globe & Mail obtained a copy of the (whatever)....." I mean, really, did they break into an office to get it, or was it conveniently emailed to them from someone who wanted to get his/her position stated or a scandal started?  Sorry, this is OT, but I'd love to hear your opinion.

My guess is that Coulter or Levant (most likely Levant, with Coulter's blessing, since he was handling her speaking tour) sent it to the Globe and Mail to stir things up.  Who else would know about it other that the Provost, UofO legal advisors, the Provost's assistant...I doubt they'd send it.

I was reading a lot of US sites yesterday claiming that Ann was 'not allowed' to speak.  It appears that they are correcting that now and saying that 'she chose' not to come due to security reasons.  Yeah those 200 students were pretty scary after what has been going on south of the border.  I am thinking it is yet another spin on the truth for exposure.

Yep...two hundred students is pretty frightening! Honestly I can't believe that people actually believe the drivel that comes out of the likes of Ann, Rush Limbaugh etc.

Probably she latched onto neo-conservatism at its peak and, discovering that she could use her looks and her writing talents, she fancied herself the female Rush and ran with it.  But you're right -- whether or not she (or any of *them*) actually believes what she preaches is immaterial, IMO.  Just like politicians who spout the party line or righteous religionists whose behaviour doesn't reflect their publically stated beliefs, they influence those less intelligent and educated and who lack any ability or desire to think for themselves. 

Oh dear this has taken a decidedly dreary turn, hasn't it?!  On the brighter side, my hyacinths and crocuses are blooming and the daffodils are ready to burst.  And the recently-arrived robins are competing with the cardinals and chickadees in the outdoor sounds department.  AND, our neighbourhood mother fox has returned.  Saw her last evening running down the street behind our house.  Won't be long before her kits will be tagging along after her!

We get the foxes in our orchard.  The kits are adorable.  They love to watch my husband driving by on the tractor.

Hmmm.....probably busy tending her newborns, but she's doing a masterful job at digging up our back lawn looking for grubs to feed her wee skunkettes (and of course she does it at night when she thinks we can't see her -- probably forgets she has a striking white stripe down her back).  The funny thing is, when we first moved down here, we were told about the "town skunk" who was de-odorized and visited everyone.  I guess a fellow skunk got wind (no pun intended!) of him and decided my little town might be a pretty good place to set up residence -- and especially under my side porch -- ugh!  Funny.....Pepe LePew cartoons were some of my favourites <sigh>

Foxes are such wonderful-looking animals -- it's a pleasure to watch her and I eagerly await her kits!

Well no, actually!  He did visit us several times and no skunk stink!!!  But you're right -- it would have been a funny (but not terribly neighbourly) prank!  Perhaps he was originally someone' pet, but didn't like the pet food......I don't think any grocery carries grubs-in-a-can.

Going from beauty (foxes) to fairly ugly -- just outside of town I frequently see wild turkeys.

We have a lot of them too.  Especially in the fall.  There was a flock of over twenty outside our living room window last fall, all different sizes.  I would post a picture...if I knew how.

Bren, the Huffington post article on Coulter is great. 

I didn't understand what she was so upset about and why this whole thing was even a news item.  I mean really, what's the big deal with an on-campus student protest?  Given Coulter's likely support of the tea-party protesters (I'm assuming here; I have not read Coulter's position on this, or anything), how can she get upset over a protest and suggest that it infringed on her right to free speech?  I hope that the article is correct and the infatuation with Coulter is on the wane.  Now, if only the some of the other blow-hards (Rush comes to mind!) would fade out too.
