Hi girls,

I was talking to a girlfriend of mine and she said her MD told her to take 325mg of aspirin every day to help protect her from recurrance. Dr. said that women metabolize aspirin differently and that 325 mg works better for women than the 81 mg. Dr. said 81 mg is ok for men to take.

Has anyone heard this? I have been taking 81 mg everyday. Should I switch?

Diane

Diane ~  Here is information on the observed link between aspirin and bc:

    http://www.physorg.com/news185616128.html

It does not mention dose, although those who took aspirin 2 to 5 times a week appeared to have less bc than those who took it 6x a week or daily, which is interesting.

In the past, there have been differences observed in how men and women metabolize aspirin, but that was in regard to using aspirin to prevent heart disease:

It sounds to me like your friend's doctor may be taking information from past research and applying it to the newest findings re. bc, and I'm not sure that's necessarily valid in this case.  I think it would make more sense to delve deeper into the nurses study, to see what dose of aspirin most of those women who appear to have had a bc-prevention benefit from it.  One SE of too much aspirin is stomach bleeding, so no way would I start popping 325mg. a day without a lot more information.      Deanna
