as some of you know we are moving.  mr. apple is the WORLD's most significant horder.  he has 6000 books and as many periodicals.. just to start.  Nothing would make me happier than having less stuff (particularly to pack), but stuff I have.  The only stuff I like is my miniature piano collection.  I could live in a square box with a bed, table, chair and piano.. a bath and cooking facilities in the corner.  My kids would live outside.

Why do we have so much stuff?

people do things because they like to....and also because it makes them feel secure. stuff is stuff; i am totally into having things around my home that make me feel happy and bring me pleasure.  "stuff" is something you can touch...move around...and do things with.  i still have a candle my sister gave me 40 years ago. lol.

I enjoy my stuff and the memories associated with it until I have to deal with moving.  then I resolve to pare down my stuff, but, a lot of it is difficult to get rid of.  The stuff that I don't want, wedding presents from 1980, that I don't use anymore, no one else wants either.

i really love and respect my husband.. this has always been a private point of contention for me.  if that's the worst that i have to endure from our relationship, so be it.

Still,  why he wants to save those old work shirts is beyond me. 'for painting' he says.  (there are like 35 of the them.. ha ha)

I don't save much except pictures and some things with memories attached.  I hate knick knacks and the few I have are tied to a trip we took or a gift from one of the kids.  However, my DM and DS save everything, as well as my DH.  I think it's like a security blanket and brings a level of comfort and distress. I guess we each have our own "thing".  Although I don't save I am OCD and get very distressed when things aren't where they should be and like things "just so".

Apple - good luck with the move........I know you're going to love the new place.

I'm more inclined to your way of thinking, Apple.  Luckily my husband doesn't hang on to too much so it doesn't bother me.  But if he did ....  I just can't handle having all that stuff sitting around and taking up space.  Used to hate this 1500 sq ft house back when the kids were teenagers cause it was so hard to have a "quiet place".  Now that they're grown up it's perfect.  Too small to horde anything but very comfortable for two people who get along well and a spoiled cat.

I'd rather have a big lot (or even acreage) and a small house.

I'm amazed at how little stuff my kids have learned to live with.  DD's apartment in Hong Kong was only 400+ sq ft for her and her roommate.  You had to get on a step stool to use the microwave.  There was a cupboard on the bottom, then the frig, then the microwave.  Now that she's in Vancouver her 700 sf apartment feels expansive!  DS Vancouver townhouse is 800 sf and they plan on raising their son there.
