Why does this bother me?
Can someone help me put into words why the following bothers me: I got on facebook today and one of my "friends" posted that her 12 year old daughter is shaving her head on March 13th in solidarity to children who have cancer. I know it is a fundraiser but for some reason it irritates me and I can't quite figure out why. It's not a locks of love thing, it's just a shave your head to raise money thing. I don't know if I am just off base but it just annoys me and I don't know why. Am I the only one who feels this way? Maybe I am just weird.

Carol,
I agree! A hair dresser friend is also having her head shaved next month for a BC fund raiser and I find it sort of noble, but also irritating. Maybe because they have a choice? It's one thing to go around bald because you choose to, quite another to lose your hair battling this disease. Or maybe I resent it because they'll be viewed as heroic, while we just look sick and pathetic? Anyway..I, for one, don't think you are weird!

Well, I don't mind the shaving for a fundraiser - it's a bit weird, true, but it does raise funds.
The ones I absolutely do not understand are the ones who get together as a group and shave their heads in "solidarity" with a friend who has cancer. What good does that do?

I think for me it trivializes Breast Cancer somehow, I feel the same way about the pink stuff. Its like they think hey we'll slap some pink on this, go for a run or shave our heads. Now don't you feel better. I swear if one more person tells me they ran for me, I will say you had better run for yourself, you could be next.

there was a 2nd grade teacher at my school who got breast cancer (she's doing great).. some of the boys in her class buzzed their hair.. then shaved their heads.. soon 3/4 of the boys in the school were bald.. we thought it was awesome. it made the papers and we were so proud of them.
i certainly don't mean to trivialize your discomfort. Some people really are empathetic... (on the other hand, some people just want attention).

Diana - that is a great line - "you should run for yourself, could be you next"
Also I have found that everyone has to tell me now when they have gone for their mammogram.

I am waiting for someone to ask me to check a lump on there boob
I have been asked to look at a rash.

I am a bit off with this too. I would not let my 13 y/o daughter shave her head for any reason. Dye it, cut it, do whatever just dont shave it. Sorry I think it is strange. I also have a lot of problems with raising money for the cure anymore. I have a very twisted view on all of it. IDK
