An Aspirin a day....

There you go, The Wonder Drug!! So, what dose did you buy?
-
I am also taking every 2nd day 81mg, but if it is a wonder drug...... I kinda doubt that. For me, I try to believe that it is not hurting me, but I also know that companies have marketing strategies that would turn you stomach around.
-
I bought Bayer 325
Will leave it at work and try to remember to take one every day so I will end up being 4-5 times per week.
-
Thats my thinking too - Mon, Wed, Fri and Sunday.
-
I take 325 mg aspirin a day. Some of the articles indicate that 82 mg is the most effective against recurrence although 325 mg still lowers the recurrence rate substantially.
I am sticking with 325 mg because I am prone to silent migraines (problems with light but no pain). When I take 325 mg daily, I do not have migraines.
I think we are all going to have to wait for double blind studies. Because there has been so much publicity about this, I think those studies will get funded even if they end up getting funded by aspirin manufacturers.
-
I had to jump in here, I talked to my MIL she has been a nurse for over 20 years. She said its pretty well known in the medical community that an aspirin a day help will many things including cancer. Funny she didn't tell me about it
. Anyway I have been on and off aspirin for my heart since I was dx with congestive heart failure. I take the 81mg or what they used to call baby aspirin. I say if it doesn't hurt then take one a day, if you are on Tamoxifen then it will help with any blood clotting. Always make sure you tell any doctor or ER that you are on aspirin and what the mg are.
-
Does anyone know why there is such a huge gap between the dosages? 325mg is 4x the baby aspirin dosage (81mg). Just seems like such a big difference-- maybe I'm missing something?
I bought the baby aspirin and am taking every other day...

I'm with Karen1956 -- I refuse to give up EVERYTHING. Otherwise, why is life worth living? I gave up smoking but I'm not giving up my beer.
I'm not a wine or hard-liquor drinker ... and beer is liquid bread, right? Ummmmmm.
I'll continue with my daily low-dose (81 mg) aspirin until we get some more definite info.
-
Girls,
I saw a blurb on this aspirin study in my local paper yesterday. It said, and I quote, "The study investigators still suggest that survivors not start a daily aspirin regimen." PLEASE. You're going to tell breast cancer survivors that this could keep their cancer from coming back but not to start it yet? I don't think so. Usually, I brush this stuff off because the clinical information is not as beefy as it should be, but in this case, I'm starting my daily aspirin.
Good health to all!

My pcp recommended I take 81 mg a day for heart health several years ago. I did for a while, and then stopped because I didn't want to be tied to taking a pill everyday. Fast forward to post-bc, now I'm taking Arimidex and Prilosec everyday so things have changed.
My BIL, a retired PS, was here right after my reconstruction surgery last month. His parting gift was a bottle of 325 mg aspirin with instructions to take one everyday. Now I wonder if he knew anything about this study? Anyway, I plan to take one every OTHER day.

Hello everyone!
Many years ago an elderly lady l know told me that aspirin was a miracle cure. She, and her family had taken half an aspirin, daily, all their lives. (In Australia, aspirin comes in a 300mg tablet) She said that aspirin was a good preventative for strokes, and heat attacks. Myrtle is now a healthy 98yrs of age.
Well about six years ago l was diagnosed with Atypical Ductal Hyperplasia, and was told that l was at high risk of developing breast cancer. I did extensive research on the health benefits of aspirin (among other things) and started taking half an aspirin (150mg) everyday/second day for five solid years. Last year I was diagnosed with invasive breast cancer. (ER+PR+, HER2-)
That was my personal journey with aspirin. We all react/ respond differently to treatments. What may not work for me...may very well work for someone else. Although it did not prevent bc, perhaps it prevented a stroke. Who knows? I have gone totally natural with my approach to wellness.
However, I do think that the research out there on aspirin is worth further investigation.
Good luck to all...xxx

When I saw my oncologist for my 6th month check up and Zometa infusion this week. I asked these questions. Just thought I'd share the answers I got. Of course, I asked other questions, but these seem to fit in to this discussion.
1. Aspirin?
Answer: Yes, take a baby aspirin, 81 mg daily. Aspirin prevents clots (SE of Femara I'm taking) and is an anti-inflammatory.
2. O.K. to take aspirin with the 200 mg of Celebrex I am taking now?
Answer: Yes. It does not work in the same way as Celebrex so it is important to take both, they do not interfere with one another. (He did not mention SE's and I forgot to ask.)
3. What new information is there about Zometa?
Answer: It appears from the most recent research that it does prevent metastasis to some degree and not just to bone. As to how many doses, etc. there is still time to look at that later since you are having your 4th infusion today.
4. How long will I be on Femara?
Answer: Continue for now. Let's look at that later. You do not hit your 5 year mark for a while (February 2011) and we may have more information then.
Question to my infusion nurse that I forgot to ask my oncologist.
5. How are my vitamin D levels?
Answer: The test quantifies the sum of Vitamin D3-hydroxy and Vitamin D2-hydroxy. Your level was 65 ng/mL, well within the optimum level 30 to 80. (She said they recommend 2000 mg; I'm taking 1600 mg daily.)
-
- ok I take 1mg....low dose of coumadin(sp)..I take that for port maintenance. I also take daily multivitamin. Take extra vitamin E and cumamin (sp).....wonder if it is TOO much of blood thinning stuff if I also add the aspirin.....Will ask Onc. on next appointment.
-
have no idea how the 1 is on above post...LOL....oh well
-
Gitane - thank you so much for that. Nice, clear and encouraging answers.
Victoria - just want to clarify that the study showed no protective effect with Aspirin and occurance, just with lowered rates of metastisis, which is why it is of so much interest to us.
So, got myself a shiny new bottle yesterday. Yah Aspirin!
-
That's a very good difference to point out Kerry! A good reminder.
-
i saw my rheumatologist yesterday ( some mild degree of arthritis) and he said
the 81mg is great. I can take that dose without any hesitation, but not more dosage.
( Damage to bones eventually.......)

I checked this website for drug interactions
http://www.drugs.com/drug_interactions.html
and it says that there's a moderate risk for kidney damage for me to take aspirin with the blood pressure medication I also take. I'm on the clinical trial where I take clodronate every day and that drug wasn't recognized by the website (I assume because it's not available in the US). I put in zometa and it also indicated a moderate risk for kidney problems. Anyone in Canada or Europe know a comparable website that might recognize the clodronate? I'm not going to start taking aspirin until I have a chance to check with my doctor.
-
I'd rather have kidney problems (which I do!) than mets...
-
Since forever, I have heard/read about the health benfits of aspirin, esp., for the heart, headaches and minor aches. I do take a coated 81mg in morning and since reading the positive effects of aspirin in a few of my anti-cancer books that I have accumulated in the last 5 months, I have also added a 81mg at night..
The biggest shock to me in this "breaking news about the bc and aspirin"....is that aspirin has been around forever and extremely available.....Why has it taken so long for aspirin to have been tested for cancer benefits....Common sense should have put aspirin in a ton of studys decades ago...I just cannot believe that they are just now doing studies....This blows my mind!!!!...Maybe because there is no $$$$ for the big companies to have backed such a study that it is just now being discovered by accident....I have also added the tumeric/pepper (another common inexpensive anti-cancer combination) that so many anti-cancer books have promoted as being beneficial....
As we can read on these posts, how confusing this news is on how much to take?... Everyone has to do what makes sense to them, let's hope an accredited study will present itself and the sooner the better!!!!!
-
The tumeric/pepper combination is just another anti-inflammatory benefit, as the aspirin is. It's not saying that aspirin is the CURE, just that it may help against mets. But as I pointed out pages ago, I've been on anti-inflammatory for about 16 years and still got cancer in the first place. So why didn't it help then? If it can help against not getting mets, then why can't it help against the cancer in the first place?
Aspirin has been around for hundreds of years. Can you imagine being diagnosed with cancer and the doc says "Take 2 aspirin and call me in the morning?" hehehehehehe
-
As to my previous post below...Everyone has to do what makes sense to them....I don't think anyone thinks aspirin or the tumeric/pepper is a CURE...We are just hoping that it may be a deterrent and hopefully a cure will be found....

It's not a matter of choosing "hey, I'll take the kidney damage over the mets, please". It's all a matter of probabilities. Suppose taking aspirin were to reduce my chance of getting mets by 5%, while increasing my chances of kidney failure by 50% (I'm making up these numbers) because I'm taking two other drugs that interact with the aspirin. Then I won't take the aspirin, thank you. Especially since it's only an observational study we're talking about. That's the kind of information I need to make a decision about whether or not I'll jump on the aspirin bandwagon.
-
karen.....exactly......"Everyone has to do what makes sense to them".....
-
Exactly. So what makes sense to me right now is to find out some information, which is why I posted looking for feedback from our members in Canada and Europe who have access to information about the drug I am taking. Not for commentary about whether kidney damage is preferable to mets, that's a call I have to make for myself.
-
I got my little bottle. Now taking 81mg daily!
-
Just for the record, my husbands rheumotologist said it is safe for him to take up to 8 x 500mg daily. So 4000mg a day.
-
Good points.
But surely Google, which is international, could give you your answers about contraindications with the drugs you're taking. I'm in Canada but I can't help you any more than Google could.
-
FYI, it was Tylenol that compromised my liver. My kidney defect could have been from birth, they don't know what caused the perfusion defect. I could have had a blow to my kidneys as I grew up, my Dad used to beat me pretty bad...
-
Kerry,
thanks for this--my mom is an RN and is a study participant.... has been for years--it is a huge study that has gone on for a really long time--- they look at all sorts of different things.
I have been taking a baby aspirin (81mg) a day for the past 8 years for a surprise blood clot that appeared at the end of my second pregnancy---- when my bc was found, they said it had probably been there for 7-8 years.... so the aspirin may not have helped if it was already there-and it did not prevent it from growing--- but it does make sense that this might work--so I am just going to keep taking it!!!
I will talk to the onc again in March about this a few hundred other things!!!
