I need a scholarship, any suggestions
I need to go back to school. I want to attend an on-line school for court reporting. The only problem is I need $8000.00! OUCH! Someone told me to look into scholarships and grants for cancer survivors. Anyone know where to start looking?
Thanks in advance

I'm having a hard time with this too. It seems like all the scholarships are for people who where diagnosed as children or before age 25 or for "mature" (their words, not mine, lol!) students ages 40 and up. Or for people who are children of survivors, so at least I know my kids will be set! I'm 32, so I'm stuck right in the middle of the age requirement.
Thanks everyminute for posting that link! Maybe I'll find something there.

cherneski - a great resource is the Directory of Financial Aids for Women. I can't find a free searchable version on-line but I googled it and here's a link to info about the 2009-11 edition:
http://www.rspfunding.com/catalog/item/1414261/872134.htm
The book is $45 (ouch) but maybe there's a library or women's center by you that has it. Good luck!

My daughter checked for herself on Komen's website and they do have scholarships for children of survivors, not sure about the survivors, but it may be worth a look.
-
Thanks you all very much. I will start checking now.

OK, cant even get the application filled out on the first one. All I have found so far is for children, or if you are a survivor of childhood cancer. I am getting frustrated. I was not physically able to return to my job, so in this economy I need to find something that I will make some money at. Court reporting seems like the right thing for me. But as I said cant go unless I find the money. Uggg

OK I feel a little better, I just called the ACS and they are sending me a list of possibilities. So I am off to work to get me some money for school.
-
Great idea about calling ACS! Maybe I'll try that too.

Total Strike out with the ACS, you either have to have had childhood cancer or the child of a survivor. I am still looking. I am very frustrated. I find it hard to believe that I am the only one in need. I was unable to physically return to my job. I cant be the only one.

Fastweb.com- I'm pretty sure that is the scholarship finder I used for my son. You fill out a profile and it matches you with any scholarships you might qualify for.
Sorry I keep editing to add... Be sure you file your FAFSA (fafsa.gov) which will determine your eligibility for Federal Financial aide (Pell grants).
Good Luck!

don't have an answer, but just wanted to wish you luck and don't give up on looking for financial aide---something has to be available somewhere.

Does your local community college offer a certificate program in court reporting? Many of them do online classes now, so you might be able to do some or even all of it online, and not have to pay as much.
If your local community college doesn't offer that major, they may have a reciprocal agreement with a nearby college that you can take classes at the in county communty college rate. They also have financial aid offices that can help you find financing.
Several NJ community colleges have those agreements with schools in PA, so you aren't limited to NJ necessarily.

Deb -- I found this place called the Mayer Foundation -- sounds like you might fit their criteria, and they accept applications on a rolling, case-by-case basis:
http://foundationcenter.org/grantmaker/mayer/individuals.html
(Their actual "scholarship" program sounds like it is for high school/college age students, but the "individual" grant described at the link sounds like a fit for you)
Also, maybe the Soroptimist "Women's Opportunity Awards":
http://www.soroptimist.org/awards/awards.htmlAnd the AARP Foundation's Women's Scholarship Program, if you'll be 40 by March 31 (provides scholarship funds to women 40+ seeking new job skills, training, and educational opportunities to support themselves and their families):

Deb ~ I came across this article today and thought of you. Don't know if it will be helpful, but it looks like there's a link in it that hasn't been mentioned here yet. Deanna
