Port Pain and Taxol Q's....
OK, I had my port put in this morning and when I breathe in real deep I feel a weird pain just behind my clavicle. I know they did a lot of pushing and prodding etc. around that area and guessing it's just from that, but I'd feel a lot better to know if any of you ladies experienced that? Not that I want any of you to be in pain! I just want to make sure it's normal!
Also, I started Taxol today. I ate breakfast and a 100 cal pack of cookies and some trail mix. I do not feel hungry at all, but we had to stop for emergency bathroom breaks off the freeway 3 times on the way home (it was a 3 hour drive:/). Is this a common SE with Taxol?

Everyone reacts diff to Taxol. Are you saying you had no appetite? Girl-you have been through a trying 3 days that could be doing it!!!
I have had 2 infusions of taxol and well nothing. You should have an easy ride of it at this point.
Don't forget to request Zometa.

I had strange pulling and pain sensations around my port for about 2-3 weeks after it was put in. They finally went away. I noticed it mostly when I raised my arm.

Yeah, I had weird pains, muscle twitches around my port for a few weeks afterward, too. I'd call the surgeon's office if you are worried. I had the RNs at my chemo check mine out closely the first month or so, just to ease my mind.
The only SE's I've had so far from Taxol are some tingling toes/fingers and pain in my joints/bones - nothing major though. Did your onc give you the list of SE's to call about? You can look at chemocare.com for a list of common SEs and when they warrant a call to the onc, too.

Thank you Kimber I did check out chemocare.com and it had great info. on there! As far as the port goes, it is just sore all over today! I've done fine with the Taxol today, no tummy troubles or any other SE's. Just feel kinda wore out and down, but, like Pure said - I have had a tough week.

Hi Billynda,
I've had my port in for over 2 months now and it still feels weird at times. I've had 4 rounds of A/C and my skin has dried a lot which I think is pulling on the port a bit. The 3 prongs also look like 3 pimples that need to be popped---yuck. Glad it's not summer
Can't help you on the Taxol, yet. I am supposed to start Monday for 4 rounds of that if a) we don't get snowed in (in MD---predicting 12-24 inches tomorrow) and b) my mouth sores (SE from the A/C clear up.
We should keep tabs on how we are doing since we are starting about the same time! You can PM me anytime if you'd like. Are you doing the dose dense like me or the weekly protocol?
Take care,
Sharon

BTW,
Kimber, thanks for that chemo site, I'm looking up the Taxol SE's now!

My port caused me pain for a couple weeks felt like I was being stabbed every time I moved my arm.
I did 12 weeks of weekly Taxol and had issues with diarrhea for thew first couple of days after treatment. It did get worse and by about week 6 and found it didn't stop after a couple of days and I was having issues overnight as well. My Onc gave me some tablets which slowed things down and made the last few weeks bearable, overall I found Taxol OK, much easier than AC.

I would flip between diarrhea and constipation so I kind of had a double whammy. I had great responses to using the BRAT diet for the diarrhea (Banana, Rice, Apple, Toast) and then eating dried apricots and prunes for the constipation.

My port was put in during surgery, but I would felt twinges for months afterwards - then I realized one day I had forgotten it was in.
As for Taxol and appetite. The day of my Taxol infusion - I would have not appetite starting as soon as the infusion started. I wasn't nauseated, sick or even queasy, just wasn't hungry. Although my taste buds were altered from the time I started AC through the end of Taxol - the two days following my Taxol infusion everything tasted much worse than the normal weird taste bud thing. Bathroom thing.......... I did go to the restroom a lot, but I also drank a lot of water and they gave me Saline drips during the infusion too.

I can't comment on the port as I did not have one, however with Taxol my appetite was great lost weight on AC and was getting concerned...but it came back with Tax...I always had a friend with me at infusion and I looked forward to our "Chemo " lunches...I remember starting with AC and watching people eat and I thought "Are they nuts ??"...well well there I was picking out my soup and sandwich ...my treatment facilty had great lunches and the volunteer ladies were always coming round with Voortman cookies & drink orders ..awww the memories...

Well, so far I just had those bathroom emergencies on the way home. My appetite is still not what it was, but I'm realizing, duh - I'm not pregnant anymore either lol plus I'm just sitting around mostly. So, that's probably normal! I didn't have a really good time with AC (mouth sores, constipation, anemia, heartburn, plus my immune system just went out the window) so I'm hoping that Taxol will be my easy one! Everyday the port gets better, but still very uncomfortable! Doesn't seem anything out of the ordinary, though:)

and Sharon - yes, I'm doing dose dense too. 4 doses 2 weeks apart. Hope you do well!!! and in case you have the same problem as me, I hope you don't live too far away from treatment center:/
