I'll be the exception! I hated the port from the get-go and I had it removed as soon as the doctor allowed it when I was done with chemo. I have good veins so in hindsight I wish I'd tried to do without one first. But it didn't require not showering or anything like that.

Feroza - a belated good wishes, I am glad to hear all went well today. The testing is the worst - so incredibly stressful. One thing though - you say the grade is 3 because the tumor was a certain size. As far as I know the two things aren't connected - my tumor was huge, but only stage 2.

Feroza....I had a port put in the same day as my first chemo....TAC chemo x 6....it was also used when I went for IV hydration after chemo....the port was in my left upper arm and no real problems so to speak....could shower and everything else....it was great to have....onc had me get it out soon after finishing chemo.....good luck with the rest of your tests and wishes for only good results.  Hugs, Karen

Feroza, so glad you checked in!  I just got in the door and I'm reading through all your good wishes.  Relieved you did well today!

I made it through chemo as well without a port.

    Rest up, you deserve it!

    Big Hug!

Feroza - Glad to hear all went well today!  Gotta admit - hate the port in my chest, but with around 30 dates with IV treatments (16 chemo + remainder of year of herceptin), it does make things so much easier!

    Feroza,

I am triple neg too and I had dense dose taxotere X's 4 and A/C Red Devil X's 4. I had a port and I LOVED IT! When I went in for chemo I would have my labs done and they attach a tube into your port(less pain that an IV or needle stick) and cap it off to be used again for chemo. I was scared to death of my port the first time I used it, but after that first time it was a God send! It was outpatient surgery to get it placed and my Breast Surgeon removed it in his office so I did not have to pay the surgery deductible again. I kept my port, kinda gross I know LOL, but it was such a part of me that I put it up in my cancer box. My advice is get the port, this journey is hard enough without having to worry about blown veins!

    Sending Love,

    Regina

I had AC, Taxol and a year of Herceptin without a port and using only one arm. My hospital only inserts the port when all arm veins are caput. I lasted throughout all chemo, blood tests, IV's etc without the port. Good luck on the 22nd!

they wanted me to get a port-they insisted.

I said no-it was one more thing, one more cutting into me, one more sign I have cancer. I have horrible veins and had to share those veins with my obgyn office but you know what they always found a way.

I have a port because I can only have blood drawn one arm.  No problems here, except it does hurt to get poked because the Emula cream doesn't work for me.

    Feroza

My thoughts are with you...I think we all know how"lonely" scans can be even if someone is waiting outside for you ...I found singing(in my head) got me through scans...usually it was an old hym from my childhood ,sounds weird but it comforted me.

    much love

I have really crappy veins and I did not need a port, although sometimes nurse RACHITT took my blood, and on one of my infusions my chemo nurse left a good dent in me , and I was bruised until the next infusion...ml C
