Platlet Count Question

When I started chemo my plats were 315-all during chemo they dropped to about 250. Then last time they rose to 280. I was thinking it was the wheatgrass but one nurse mentioned it might be my bone marrow kicking in.

My question is if the chemo was working woudn't it be destroying my platlets?

No it normally doesn't destroy all the platelets.  Mine went up and down throughout the chemo treatments.

Mine dropped quite a bit during the AC, then rose back up during Taxol to normal levels.  I think like the rest of our counts the platlets go up and down.

The steroids can elevate your levels too - they "masked" my neutropenia - on Chemo day my WBC was really high, then when I got a fever mid cycle and they tested me, I had 0 WBC.

Well I am not taking decatron anymore- they told me that the platlets look good. My fear is they haven't dropped enough-though -like the chemo is not working.

Interesting I did find out I couldn't get a epidermal if they went below 100. They didn't tell me that until my last visit-TG they didn't tell me that b-c I would have freaked out.  NO EPDERMAL-been there done that-never agian.

    Pure-

I think megakaryocytes (cells in your bone marrow that produce platelets) are less sensitive to chemo than the cells that make red and white blood cells but I am not sure, so I don't think you need to worry your chemo isn't working.  I think very few on bc.org need neumega to boost platelet counts.

Because I had little side effects with chemo, I was worried somehow I was metabolizing the chemo too rapidly.  I had DCIS in my margins but my cancer was so aggressive they recommended I finish chemo and then have the repeat surgery.  When they reexcised, all the DCIS was gone and I am now four years out from diagnosis without a recurrence, so I think the chemo was working.
