I did this for Thanksgiving, so I thought we could do this for the Holiday Season.  Let's share stories from recent or childhood memories that bring smiles to our faces........... One that we laugh about year after year is the year Santa "slept" late...............

My Mom was a single parent to me and my sister.  She worked very hard to keep things going and did a great job.  However, if any of you are single you know it can be very tiring, especially to two young, active girls.  My sister and I were probably about 7 and 8 years old this one memorable year.  My sister woke up ready to go, came to my bed woke me up and off we ran to the Christmas Tree - what had Santa brought?  what was it this year?  There we stood in front of the tree................... no stockings...................... no gifts........................no candy...................nothing.  What, were we that bad?  What did we do?  My poor Mom comes running into the living room, grabs us up brings us into the kitchen and explains that Santa was running late.  Santa runs late?  She began fixing us breakfast and told us that she was sure Santa would make it by the time we finished breakfast. Somehow..........Santa made it to the house and delivered all of our presents, stockings included.   Looking back I don't know how my Mom did it and to this day she won't tell us how she pulled it off, but she did and it is to this day one of the best Christmases we had together.  The year Santa slept in........................

Oh my goodness.  Go Mom :)

Santa always brought presents in my house for the next couple of days because Santa lost them and couldn't remember where they were.  Then as we got older it was hilarious because my Mom every year would be up in the attic on Christmas morning trying to find presents.  There are still presents that have not been found to this day...

Oh, Jenn that is a funny story. It is amazing the lengths we go to for our kids. My husband and I spent half of yesterday searching high and low for a "Stuffed Duck" that my daughter put on her Christmas list. Finally found one in a Build a Bear place!

As we got older, Santa wasn't as much an issue and we were giving each other more gifts than Santa brought. As the gifts were bought and wrapped, they were placed under the tree creating lots of shaking of packages and speculation on what they contained.

One year when I was about 12, I found a package addressed to me that really picqued my interest. It was kind of rectangular and squishy...not in a box like most of the other gifts. I guessed and guessed what was in it and the funniest thing I came up with was a pound of sliced deli ham.

It turned out to be a pair of tights, lol.

I'm Catholic and we have  Confession as a sacrament.... you go to a tiny room and anonymously confess your sins to a priest and are then forgiven.

    i had this memory :

My mother had us go to Confession on Saturdays.   I'd walk to church with my little brother  and be the first in line.  The priest of course knew who we were.  .. the same sins all the time and he would say "Mary - for your penance etc."  I was really bothered by this because confession was supposed to be anonymous.  I started talking in a different voice with a British accent to fool the priest.  I was probably 8 at the time.  I'd make up totallydifferent sins so he wouldn't know it was me.  I remember once he asked me if I ever lied, and I said  'no'.  He gave me 20 Our Fathers and 20 Hail Marys to say.  The next week he asked me again about lying and gave me 20 Our Fathers and 20 Hail Marys to say and also told me to go to Mass everday for a week.     I knew that priest really well, and I realize in retrospect that the confessions were anonymous, because he NEVER mentioned my accent.  It's as if it never happend.

I love the stories........... and Kerry you're right what we don' do for our kids!

I'll share another.  We were probably 10 or 11 at the time.  Mom had a VW Bug, which was just the best car ever............ My Mom could pack that little car like a pro!   One year Mom let me bring my best friend with us to pick out the tree, so imagine, one VW Bug with three kids and a tree. We picked out a tree, which was just as fat as could be and thought we'd tie it to the top of the car like always.  For whatever reason the decision was made to put the tree in the car with us!  So.........we drove home with three kids and a fat Christmas tree inside of a VW Bug. Me in the bum, bum seat (which was the space between the backseat and the window of the car, my friend somewhere under the tree, my sister and Mom in the front.  When we got home and Mom opened the car door and moved the seat, my best friend literally fell out of the car.   Many, many years later when we all talk about it we still don't know why the tree was in the car that year, but it was and gave us something to laugh about...................

I had a year that the "Easter bunny" was late! My poor son ran downstairs and my (then) DH and I heard a "HEY?" We looked at each other in horror and I ran to my closet. While DH went downstairs to "help look" I rushed into my sons room and stuffed everything under his comforter. I called out for him to come up and told him I found everything when I was making his bed. He said, "Oh Mom, you NEVER make my bed" as he turned to see what he'd got! Embarassed

When I was around four, I woke up late Christmas Eve night, saw that Santa had delivered the goods, and ran into my parent's bedroom to let them know. Let's just say that "I caught Mommy kissing Santa Claus"! LOL! I really didn't figure out what was going on that night until I was a teenager!

Oh, my, that is quite the Christmas surprise!!

I remember as a young kid getting up to go to the toilet, and very clearly seeing Santa walking down our hallway with his sack on his back. I remember it so clearly - I must have been dreaming!!

Three years ago I made a very large bonus.  I had always hoped that I would retire on the water here in Florida but with cancer...well who knows.  Sooooooo I decided I would take this money and buy a small townhouse on the water that is 30 minutes from our home.  It would be our weekend home... a place to get away.....build memories with my kids. We wanted to surprise our children with it.

So for christmas we did not put any presents under the tree and left this one ornament that you could open up on the tree skirt.  My husband hid 10 additional ornaments around town leading to the townhouse. Each ornament had a clue on where to go next......it was "the amazing christmas race".

Well when the kids woke up all they saw was the one ornament.....they were beyond bummed.  It took them some time to figure out that the ornament could be opened.  The directions took them to the local dunkin donuts where they had to ask for a special box of munchkins....inside was another ornament....and so the story goes.....they went place to place and found the last ornament buried in the sand at the beach with a key to the townhouse.  I will tell you they were not happy doing this exercise and complained the whole way.  I told my son that sometimes presents are too big to fit under the tree.....He said...."I think I like the ones that do".

When they opened the townhouse it was filled with surfboards, bikes, bathing suits, etc.  It has become the best christmas ever....althou at the time of the "race" no one had a clue that it would be.  We have built so many memories there that I hope my children never forget them....or me.

Love these stories!  Jacqueline, they will treasure the memories and someday when they're all old and gray they will say "remember when we had the amazing Christmas race?"

Jacqueline - that is one of the best Christmas stories I have ever heard of.   You made memories that cannot be duplicated and will be long remembered.   I hope you took a zillion pictures along the way.   It was a lot of work to organize the various places and clues to the next.   Merry Christmas to all,    Nancy

Well, from what the weatherman is saying this year will be the Christmas blizzard memory.  DS is a bit irritated that this big snowstorm is coming on days that are already school vacation. ;)

The snow is unbelievable this year...................  I have to agree with your DS - snow days should be for days not already set as vacation days..............  Maybe he'll have better luck in January.

Well............ I am finished with all of my housework, baking and wrapping.  My DH and I have been lounging around all afternoon.................... This is wonderful!!!!

One more story................ titled "PEANUTS in reverse"

This particular year my sister and I were probably 19 or 20.  We live NOLA and some years we get warm Christmases and other years it's down right freezing and/or raining.  And......... two years that I can remember we had snow!  This year Mom bought a Douglas Fir (the one with the short softer needles) which was beautifully shaped and about 8 feet tall. This tree was stunning. As usual we kept it watered so that it wouldn't dry out.  And............ then we noticed that the tree was not only staying soft and nimble, but that the previously green small buds that were to be pinecones were GROWING!  Yes, the Christmas tree was growing in the stand, in the house!  After Christmas Mom decided to remove the decorations and lights and continue to water it to see how long it would last.  Amazingly enough............. that tree continued to grow until Spring time when she finally said it had to go.  When we told this story to people they didn't believe us - that is until we brought them to the house to show them the tree with new branch and pine growth.  We had a Christmas tree in our home that year until the Spring - and to this day we've wondered......................had we planted it in the ground would have grown?

Wow!  That is amazing.  Especially to me who can't get cut roses to last more than a few  days.
