Canadian Health Care

As I recall on the healthcare threads the MODERATORS said stop censoring someone if you disagree with them -- just move along...or say what you think.  Grow up censorious people!!!  Please!

I saw the deleted post on the other thread, OMG. I did find it the microchip thing entertaining. Rico and enjoyful, you have more patience than I do. I missed the Health Care in the stall defense. I must have been speed reading through that one. 

 Re; dirty hospitals - I worked in Mexico for a couple or years and it would have been a compliment to call the public hospital dirty. Now, we had insurance through our employer, so we could go to the private hospital - it was immaculate. My co-worker had appendicitis and had to go to the private ER. Well, there was no line up, right in for x-rays..... and rush surgery when it was found that the appendix had burst. After several days in Hospital, she was sent home with a video tape of her surgery. She was told that she might need it to prove to our insurance company that the surgery took place. Talk about fraud.  That being said, the care was great, but what a travesty that the hospital was almost empty, as most of the citizens could not afford to go there.  

What spitefulness!  Give the censorship a break ladies, and I use the term "ladiess" very loosely here!!!

Dang, all the funny ones keep getting censored before I get to them.  Probably because I need to keep going away to wipe my runny nose.

Ahh Geez .. Layne, saw your name again and popped in.  I'm a stalker for intelligence!  I haven't read this thread cause I'm not Canadian. 

It's pretty annoying to have posts "reported" because someone doesn't like what's written.  I posted the other day in one of those threads ... and thought better of it the next day, and deleted it.  Only one person seemed to read it anyway.  Nobody wants to hear how the "poor" are fairing with/without healthcare.

Lewing .. you are right on the money!  I live in Southern VA.  Right in the heart of the right.  My county is at 23.9% unemployment.  So, no rich folks down here up in arms.  I'm a transplant from San Diego, so I get a pass! 

I was a middleclass person .. but somehow, I'm now in the ... well, somewhere else.

Bren - you epitomize the tragedy of the health care reform discussion in the US. Being ill should not cause your finances to change. It just isn't right.

 I have to tell a story. In the early 60s when I was a teenager our family lived in Arlington Virginia. When our posting ended, I told my 15 year old friend that we were leaving and, knowing not to be too specific, said we were going back to Canada. "Where is that?" she asked. "It's a country just north of the US", I told her. "No", she said. She had never heard of it and didn't think it was there. "Yes, it's a country bigger than the US" I told her. She looked surprised and denied that any country was bigger than the US.  When she accepted that there was a country north of the US (I think she had seen too many weather maps where the world ends at the US border), she said, "well, in ten years it will be new US state". 

It seems to me that sort of thinking is what is happening still. Many people who don't live it just plain can't believe that something like universal health care could happen and that it could be a very good thing. Instead, they are willing to believe the propoganda that brings in fears of death panels, rationing, government control (as if there isn't already government control on many other fronts), takeover of the country by I'm not so sure who, and yes, compulsory microchips. Pity.

Does anyone know of a good book about how Canada went to universal health care?  I know about Tommy Douglas, but not just how it happened.

I had a close friend in elementary school and high school whose parents were Lebanese and Egyptian. The were very well off. I was never sure of the details, but I knew that her parents left Lebanon because they feared for their safety. They brought their money with them. We had a conversation in our early teens during which she stated with absolute certainty that poor people were poor because they didn't want to work. Now, I didn't grow up poor either, but my mom had grown up as a Czeck refugee. She aways reminded me that circumstance is not always under someones control. I couldn't believe that someone could believe that ALL poor disadvantage people around the world were in that situation because of something lacking in them. My belief then and now is that we have so many poor and disadvantaged because there is something lacking in  the population as a whole. What I find baffling about some American point of view is this: They enjoy the american identity of a nation that extends it's hand to other nations in need, yet blames members it its own population for their plight. BTW, my childhood friend continues to live off the family money and alimony, has had some jobs here and there, but in now way has payed her way.
