Have you wondered if you meet the requirements to get the shot now?

I found this interesting.  I had a visit with my Onc a couple months ago and asked her, and she really didn't know. I asked my family doc when I saw her last month, and she thought I should get it.

I skipped the first round they gave here because I thought it should be for pregnant women and kids first.  This time I thought I'd call and ask my family doc if I met the priority requirements and the nurse didn't know but thought they were only targeting the young at this time. She said call the health dept.

The health dept nurse said "yes, you do because you've had cancer and treatment fairly recently and we don't know that the cancer is totally gone or not, and you could be at risk for a worse outcome if you get the flu due to the treatment you received."

So, it looks like I'll go. I just wondered what your doctors are telling you?

I did not ask my onc if I should/shouldnt get the shot. I did go to my GP and she said yes. I had the shot 3 weeks ago.

Brenda ~ I got the shot yesterday (and my arm is sore!). Although it's now available to anyone in Ontario, the questionnaire does ask if you have cancer....I asked the nurse why the question, and she pretty much gave me the same response as you received from your health department.

When I saw my onc on Oct. 26, she asked if I wanted to get the shot. I said I felt rather neutral about it. She said that's fine, I'm in good health and don't really need it. Works for me. I never get flu shots, and I get the flu about as often as the people who do get the shots.

    Mich,

My arm swelled up like a giant mosquito bite!!! It itched sometimes too. It just went down (had the shot 3 weeks ago).

I got both shots on the recommendation of my gp.  She has seen the swine flu and said it is VERY nasty.  I was in the first group to get the H1N1 due to lung issues and the cancer history.

I asked and was told that I would not qualify based on cancer history (treated in 2006) but I do have mitral valve prolapse so I got it under that.  I am pretty healthy in general, well, except that stage III cancer thing in 2006. LOL.
