Taxol - 1 x week or every other week

At my first appt with my onc, she said I would be on dose dense AC for 4 cycles and then there would be a choice of Taxol once a week for 12 weeks or every other week for 4 cycles.

Any ideas on why one would be preferable over the other?

The thought of sitting in the chemo chair every week is daunting.

I did neither (Taxatore x3) but I think the survival rates are the same.

The only thing is that with the longer cycle, the dose each round is higher, so the SE's are more severe. I was bed ridden 2-3 days each round with bone pain from the Taxotere. People in my chemo group doing 12 T's were not as badly hit, but they did get cumulatively worse.

However, the idea of having to go in there every week for 3 months sounds daunting to me too....

I am doing Taxol weekly and am suffering with pain issues and neuropathy - my onc thinks had I done DD it would have been much worse.  I was initially told that I would be doing DD AC and DD Taxol.  However, we realized near the end of AC that the trial I am in states that I have to do the Taxol weekly, not DD.  I was faced with a decision, stop the trial and do DD or continue with the trial and do weekly Taxol.  I was able to make a decision when I finished the AC.  Talk to your onc and see if he/she will let you get started on the AC and make the DD or weekly Taxol decision later.  We all handle the SE's differently and you may do well enough on AC that you want to do the DD Taxol to get it over with or you may want to give your body a break and do weekly.  That will give you more time to think about it, see how you're doing on AC and research which option will work best for you.

Thanks.  I will talk to my onc before I start Taxol. I do my last round of AC this week and my body is "limping along" as my onc says.

My own theory is as I've aged I have developed loads of allergic reactions to various chemicals.  It started with cat allergies in my twenties and now I'm extremely sensitive to perfumes, markers, household chemicals, metals etc.  My body is not very happy about being infused with this stuff on a regular basis.

I'm getting a little nervous about Taxol since the chance of having an allergic reaction is higher.

The do the first infusion really slowly to start, and they hover nearby for the first 5 -10 minutes just to make sure you are OK. If you do have a reaction, they give you benedryl or something, and slow things right down. You will be OK!

I am doing my last round of AUX next week ( do 28 day cycle)

Then I am doing 12 weeks of taxol. Here is what I was told by 2 different docs

2nd Opioun doc said he doesn't do taxotere if he can avoide it b-c se's are so harsh but feels outcomes are the same

Primary doc at Duke feels that weekly is better-she feels the constant flow of the drug in your system is better, less toxic, and less se's. She said the worse case scenario is Neropathy. (spelling)

Thanks Jenn.  It seems like your docs are cutting edge so that's good to hear.

My friend had a allergic reaction to Taxol last week so I think that made me more nervous.  I know they can handle it with benadryl and a slooow drip. She was at the hospital for 6 hours.

Just finished my 12 weeks of Taxol.  I thought another woman said it well when she referred to being a hamster on a wheel.  Seems like those Mondays rolled around way too fast. We both continued to work and she has a 12 yr old son.  But on a positive note I didn't have any notable SE the first 5 weeks -- those week flew by.  Hard to say if that would have been the case if I gotten the higher dose every other week.  I am not going to go back and re-do it to find out!Wink

I also found a news article on this site that may be of interest.  Says that a study found a 3% increase in survival rate with weekly taxol.  This may help in the decision but I do believe it's more important to make sure it the right regimen for what your body can handle now.

Hi, Clarice; I had 12 Taxol and found it fairly easy.  I had almost no neuropathy until about week 10 and then I had a fairly mild version that is almost gone (after a year from date of onset).

I have a number of allergies or sensitivities to chemicals and other things--hair dye, hair product, cosmetics, nickel, formaldehyde, sunscreen, latex.  I had a latex free surg suite for my mastectomies, although I thought that was probably not necessary.  For what it's worth, I had no allergic reactions during chemo, and very few side effects.  I reduced the steroid during Taxol to about 2mg and took none of the dex post infusion (with doctor's approval).

I was really nervous about Taxol; I'd read a lot about allergic reactions and was fully expecting one.  As I waited through my premeds, the woman next to me in the chemo room had a full blown reaction to it--the nurse had walked away for only a minute.  I was sure I was next.   Her doc came in and told her she would be getting Taxotere henceforth.

    Warmest, have a good week!

    Cathy

Thanks Anacortes girl.  I'll take whatever increase in survival I can get!  You live in such a nice area.  I used to go to LaPush every summer with my great aunts who lived on Bainbridge Island.

Cathy- thanks for taking the time share your experience as a person with chemical sensitivities. That's also encouraging news about lowering steroids safely.  I absolutely loathe them.

I was nervous about the 1st infusion as well, so much so they had to give me Ativan.  However, with the steroids and benadryl, I had no allergic reactions to the Taxol.

I am doing TAC once every three week, the strongest of all, I have 2 pills of 500mg Benadrayl and Tagamet through IV to prevent reaction now.   I had reaction on first chemo, but they watched very closely, then, gave me meds, it calmed down instantly, no problem at all afterwards, one thing to remember, not everyone has reaction.  My reaction was my face started to turn red and a little bit warm which I couldn't see myself, nurses saw it right away, one nurse was staying with me to watch whether I would have one or not and it took only about 2 minutes.  You will be fine with no reaction or like me being well taking care of and I wish you with no reaction.  My doc told me the Taxol is the most important drug of three which actually kill the cancer cells.  Hope this helps, hugs, Karen        P.S. I am on 5th chemo of 6 rounds and I am doing well.

Sis has arthritis so pain is norm. Doc said weekly would decrease the risk of bone pain so she did that. Tolerated pretty well. Never got neuropathy. The chemical the medicine is in can cause the allergic reaction - 1st dose most likely, 2nd possible so they have an epipen and oxygen etc by you and watch you closely. Once you are past that, not so bad. Sis did heavy premeds the night b4 and morning off for 1st 2 doses - Decadron. Good luck. Didnt need Neulasta - that was the best part!

I did 4 A/C and 4 Round of Taxol. Taxol was much more tolerable than A/C.

I had no neuropathy at all. Everybody's reaction is different.

    Good luck clarice.

I did 12 weeks of weekly taxol.  Definitely treated me better than the 6 DD EC.  Some neuropathy, some shortness of breath, but mainly dog tired.  At my clinic they give IV drugs beforehand to prevent adverse se.  All was fine.  Take the Ativan if you have restless leg during the infusion.  2 years later, their've been some scares, but all seems good.

    Hi everyone,

I was just diagnosed at age32 with stage3 triple negative IDC. So my DR. put me on taxo 1 week and every 4th week its taxo and another chemo. When I got my first chemo I did get a reaction to taxo. I am thinking about double mastectomy so I would like to know what do you all think and what did you guys do.

    Yellow,

So it appears that your onc is doing neoadjuvant chemo to shrink the tumor prior to surgery. Many women do surgery first so their decision comes much quicker whether it will be a single or bilateral MX. Those of us with neoadjuvant get to think about it for a while.

Getting a BMX is very much a personal decision.  During my 12 weeks of taxol I was leaning toward the BMX for a few reasons.  First, since I believe I going to get through treatment and have a lot years ahead I tend to think my chances of getting a new primary in the other breast are high due to family history.  Second, at 51 I really don't worry about losing a breast and relying on either a prosthesis or maybe someday doing reconstruction.  Third, I finally glanced at some of the comments from ladies who had just gone through surgery and saw that it was a very doable surgery.  It's amazing how quickly some of them are healing.

Now that I found out I'm BACR2+ a couple of weeks ago it has solidified the decision for the BMX since that increases the odds for another primary cancer in the other breast.  But that is as far as I've gotten in my decision.  I still have over 3 months of chemo so I don't spend much time thinking about the next phase of treatment.  I plan on working each phase when it's in front of me.

Yellow - for me the decision was made quickly.  I am also TN, Stage III, Grade III, with node involvement.   I never thought I'd ever deal with cancer, but my personality is such that I immediately made the decision after some research to have a BMX.  I just didn't want to take any chances  I have not done reconstruction yet, but plan on doing it after I'm finished with rads and have a break from the medical community.  But....... it is a big decision and very personal.  I wish you luck - I know the right decision for you will come.
