Pain in Chest Area
OK, new girls, please don't read this one. I don't want to alarm you about something that might be nothing. Three days ago, I spent a few hours raking my leaves and two of my neighbors leaves. I have periodically had pain in the area where my cancer was, but the last couple of days it has made me uncomfortable and scared. It seems to only hurt (mildly) when I turn a certain way, and it is not a constant pain. I'm hoping that my chest area is just weak from radiation, and there certainly may be some scarring in there. I guess I'll have to go get it checked out if it doesn't let up. The idea of having to go through this while my DH is being cared for by hospice terrifies me....
Says some prayers for me, girls!
Love
Bobbie

Oh, Bobbie, I can only imagine what you are going through. I really hope this is nothing. It does sound as though it might just be overworked muscles or something similar, as it gets sore after you have been exercising. I notice more tenderness in my cancer/radiation area after I have been gardening or over-exerting too.
I wish I could do something to make this all easier.
Let us know how things go.
I will be thinking of you.
Remember, no matter what, we are all here for you.
Love and hugs,
Kerry

bobbie,
My thoughts? You "tweaked" your chest muscle or it is se's from rads...or both. I would not worry. But you can do the 2 weeks thing...if it gets worse....make an appointment with your onc.
I found personally that after chemo, surgery and rads my body was a mess. I was tight all over. something simple like a walk around the block I felt for days. It took time for my body to recoupe.
Ahhhh cancer.....
-
my ribs really hurt particularly upon awakening.. my onc said they would continue to hurt for years from the radiation.
my whole chest is sooooooo tight.. i easily stress the underlying muscles - I am VERY active. . of course you should discuss this but if it is anything like the regular pains I have, it probably wouldn't be a problem..the fact that it happened after raking is encouraging - should just be muscle pain.. really! if you feel better in two days, it should indicate that it is muscular strain.
.. i know i have all sorts of new aches pains just by virtue of my mid-50 status.
and i edit this with a little smile to let you know that prayers for you and yours are sent your way.

Thanks Girls. Just having you all there for me is so important to me. BTW, has anyone else ever marvelled at how much you can "know" about others just from their avatars and how they write on these forums? I feel like I know so many of you so well. It's comforting....I'll keep you posted.
Hugs

What does my avatar tell you about me, Bobbie? LOL FYI the duckling lived.
My ribs bother me on the rads side, also. In fact, I was just having a tiny freak out in my mind about them today. ;p Raking 3 yards would probably cause some issues for more than a few days. Hugs, honey!!

Bobbie, I'm voting for scar tissue issues. I think you are right. I hope you are, because I also have periodic pain right in the place on my chest where the tumor was deepest and in my arm pit where the SNB left a lot of scar tissue (said so on the post mast. path report). It comes and goes, and still hurts when I move certain ways. I'm pretty active too, and I'm a full year further out than you, so it is probably scar tissue that kicks up its heels when you excercise the muscles around it just so. That's my theory and I'm sticking to it. Fingers crossed!
-
I too think the most likely explanation is exertion. But I fully understand that it makes you feel anxious. I have some aches and pains too in the radiated area. It seems to be very common.
Hugs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And give it a little time. Hopefully it will just go on its merry way......

Bobbie: Thanks for the post -- it reminds me that I'm not crazy. I've had the same thing. I've spent the past couple weeks doing a lot of house chores with company coming and going. I was starting to worry about the pains in my ribs and around my scar sites and in the radiation field. If this is the "new normal", I want to be alternative.. Hang in there.

I have also noticed with the weather getting colder that I am just more achey generally. Maybe that has something to do with it, or maybe you are just getting old!
-
Bobbie - I have some truncal lymphedema issues and if I over do (or under do like when we drove to SC in one day) I get pain in my chest and upper back on ca side too. My ribs tend to ache if I do too much. A good nights sleep usually helps but then who gets a good nights sleep???? Anyway - resting helps.
I would assume it is nothing since it happened from "doing something". I dont worry about daily aches and pains - because I have too many. I also have a pain in my tailbone that has been bothering me since last march if I sit a certain way. It doesnt get better and it doesnt get worse - it started after I did several pilates classes and never went away. It is not super painful just annoying. It is the pains that come from doing nothing that scare me and even those I ignore unless they get progressively worse and/or wake me at night. The only thing that I have right now that qualifies is a freaking ingrown toenail which is making me crazy - literally wakes me up in the night!
I love you girl - it's nothing, I know it. Arent you leaving for disney in like 2 weeks?!?!

Spunky Girl-Well don't judge me from my avitar:) I only wish I looked like that:)))) I own a website that sells cancer tees and she is from the site.
I get various pains or sensations in my rib area. I hang from a doorway to stretch the muscles every day and that has made most of the pain go away.
I will from time to time get weird feelings over there after working out. I find that after 2-3 days if it's muscle related it will go away. I usually take a hot bath to to calm the muscles and me.
Also-take some tylenol. If it goes away then!!!
-
I find that I have tightness in my chest around the incisions when I do too much and on days 3-5 after chemo when I'm achy all over. I guess muscles mixed with scar tissue take a loooong time to heal.
I'm not too creative - my avitar is of my two girls and myself.......... I've thought about changing it from time to time, but too lazy I guess.

Girls,
You all rock! Your avatars tell me that you are strong, beautiful and courageous! PureE, I'm betting you are more beautiful than that girl, Everyminute's avatar tells me what I know is true about her and that's that she's constantly in motion (and caring for everyone around her), and Bugs, yours tells me that you are a little wild and crazy just like me. I'm still working on that Christmas picture. There's no pain today, yippee, but I'll keep my eye on it.
Love

Magnesium helps! It targets muscle and nerve problems.
-
Bobbie,
I also have had pains in the area in which my tumor was removed. When I went for a 6 month check-up with my surgeon, I told her about it. She ordered an ultrasound of my chest wall and all that showed up was scar tissue and fluid around the incision scar, mainly where the tumor was located. I was scared too! I think every time a pain comes up, I am going to think cancer...is this normal? Please keep us informed if you do not get any better and have to go and get this checked out. I pray this is just from overexerted muscles from raking leaves!

Sandy,
Yes, it is so normal to think every pain is cancer. That's why doctors say to give it two weeks before you get it checked. With that being said, obviously a pain that can't be ignored needs addressed. I'm giving this another week, and I am hoping for scar tissue!
Hugs

Bobbie - try not to think about it too much if you can as well. I know when I have a sore back say, the first thing I think when I wake up is "is my back still sore" And magically, it is!
I was bothered a few weeks ago by a sore back, I thought about it constantly. I think I was making it worse by getting tense and then prodding it to see if it still hurt! I took tylenol for a couple of days to stop it hurting, which helped also to switch off my mind, and now the pain has gone. I sometimes think we are capable of magnifying every little twinge into something so much bigger.
