Ladies,
I knew my cyber girls would have some creative answers for me on this topic. For Christmas, instead of getting a mindless number of gifts for grown up family and friends, I'd like to make a nice donation to the local foodbank, which needs the money desperately. How can I do this in a tasteful manner????

so easy! Many organizations have "tribute" cards. You make a donation in honor of (fill in whatever/whoever) and they have cards they or you can send. Something like..A donation was made in your name to the xyz food bank. Merry Christmas. There is no need to the $ amount to mentioned anywhere.

I would contact the Food bank and ask them. I bet it is all set up and easy for you to do.
