Make-up hints

I too tried Bare Escentuals a couple of times - and while I liked the coverage, it felt really weird on my skin, kind of like I was wearing a mask, and I didn't expect that with a mineral makeup. Liked being able to custom design the shade with the two different bases, but just didn't like how it sat on my skin.
-
I have used the bare minerals or whatever the first one was. I love it. Just brush it over my moisture after the moisture has had a few moments to absorb. I use very little and don't put it over my crows' feet and very lightly around any other wrinkles. It does much better than powder for me. Just smooths out my ruddy complextion and I add a teensy bit of cheek color and I'm outta there.
-
Dotti, I've always wondered if it gave enough coverage because of the brush it's applied with. I notice when I put my powder on with the sponge-type applicator I get great coverage. Does the brush really do such a great job?
-
It's all in the brush Barbe! I bought the L'Oreal min powder and the brush that came with it was horrible. The handle is too short so that you end up sort of grinding it over the face instead of gently/lightly fluffing it in circles. Due to my old age failing eyesight, I use a 5x magnifying mirror in full sunlight, if possible, and I was shocked to see long black hairs all over my face the first time I used it. People would have thought I'd had a black cat sitting on my face if I hadn't seen it first! I searched around till I found a longer handled and bristled, softer brush which does a great job of blending the powder on the skin over moisturiser or foundation. I found it in one of those stands that just sell brushes/sponges etc., we don't have the same brand names as you have over there so I don't think the brand name would help, sorry.
It also pays to wash the brush in shampoo after every five uses or so too.
Sheila.

I do condition my brushes--the kabuki type brush is the best. I like the longer handle one, too.
I don't use foundation---the minerals Are foundation for me. The coverage for me is very good. They have a denser mineral something for extra spot coverage. I bought it and the brush, but didn't use it so swapped it on MUA. Kept the brush for eyeshadow.
I have used foundation of Every kind, and they all feel very heavy to me. Laura Mercier has a tiented moisture (basically foundation, huh?) that feels lighter.
I, too, like to mix the colors to cover tanned or not skin. I use tanning cream in the summer for face and legs, but am fair in the winter, etc. It helps to lighten or darken.

Thanks so much Tina - have a lovely weekend.xxxxxxxxx

I just started w/Laura Mercier tinted foundation and it is the first that has worked. Tried a pressed mineral (don't remember who) but it does not sit well, although the girl promised it was less messy than the mineral powder. Just found that one of the local malls (we have 4 w/in 30 minutes) has a store for the bare minerals brand. Plan to visit- this way I don't have t guess, or buy whole sets, can get just what I need. Thought I would try that...just seems like a quick sweep would be easier and faster than the lotion/liquids.
Not sure where to post this question....after another struggle in the shower with the razor, and me being on the losing end yet again...I am raising the white flag and looking into electric razors. Any info, suggestions or advice on brands?
Thanks -
Elaine, what is the problem you have with a razor?
-
I've never met an electric razor that did the job.
Why are you losing the battle? How do you shave your legs? For one thing, I don't think it is a good thing to try to shave in the shower. Why don't you just fill your basin with warm water and use a hot, wet facecloth to wet and warm up your legs, apply shaving cream, and shave? Works fine for me.
-
Too often now I am taking off more than the hair on my legs
. nasty cuts. I have been doing in the shower, maybe I should try in the tub....was hoping there would be another way to avoid altogether. -
What works well for me when shaving my legs is to use hair conditioner rather than a shaving cream...................... been doing that for years. Paul Mitchell at one time was recommending one of their products for this purpose but actually any conditioner will do it.
-
I use conditioner too--cheap stuff from hotels or just a big bottle at a discount store.
You can also consider the Nair hair removal type creams. I think they smell and take too long and maybe not good for some skin.
I've seen something you can "stick" to the wall of your shower that you can place your foot on and it looks a lot more stable than the usual side of the tub thing. If you cannot find that, they now have handles that attach with no screws, etc, and that would be good to support your foot/leg.
But in the long run, either the bath tub or the sink is the safest way to go if you want to continue to shave.
-
I would LOVE NOT to shave, although it would not be a pretty sight
. I had not heard of the conditioner thing, I'll have to try that and maybe at the end of a long tub soak instead of soap in the shower. Thanks ladies -
Soooo wish I could be a part of this but it's been closer to 3 years than 2. Good for you. Hope you'll come back and share your findings.
-
You know, ladies, they sell really great, gentle home waxing kits now. Sally Hansen makes a microwaveable kit that I use. I've been doing it for years now, and the wonderful, marvelous thing is that the longer you do it, the less hair you have. So now, I have only a bit around the upper part of my shins & knees, and believe me, my legs used to look like they belonged to the Missing Link (evolutionary joke...).
-
Elaine, don't do it at the END of a soak. Your skin will be slightly swollen from the heat and water and you won't get a good close shave. I read that in 17 magazine about 25 years ago! hehehehehe
-
Dottie???? How are you??? How did the surgery go?
-
oh thanks Barbe...when is the best time? other than never
-
I think Dotti just had her back surgery last Friday, the 25th. She posted that a couple of days earlier. I have been thinking of her, too, hoping all went well and she is feeling better and better. We'll just have to wait until she feels well enough to report in here again. (((Dotti)))
Product report: Went to Sephora yesterday and tried the new Anastasia brow pen, Long Wearing Brow Tint. http://sephora.com/browse/product.jhtml?id=P219410&categoryId=C10474
Comes in two shades, natural or deep. The natural was closest to my brow color but NOT a universal color. My brows are very ashy toned and this had too much warmth in it. Was obvious on my face. I tried to rub it off and it wouldn't BUDGE. So, review is mixed. If one of the colors works for you, I think it would be good. Very easy to apply and looked fairly natural.
Also tried Laura Geller and Laura Mercier. No good color for me.
I'm sticking with my Anastasia Brow Duo in Medium Ash. It's the best I've found so far. http://sephora.com/browse/product.jhtml?id=P69300&categoryId=S10515&shouldPaginate=true

Elaine, do it when you first get in the shower. Then you're not all slippery and soapy. Personally, I do it while my hair has conditioner on it....
-
maybe I'll get one of those shower stools to sit on; its not so much about being slippery & soapy...not sure what it is other than painful!
-
I shave when the conditioner is on my hair as well. My rads underarm grows like two hairs, so that's not a big deal, except that those two hairs are very hard to get to and I don't want to cut myself. Bigger deal: legs, bikini area. But honestly, my hair is not as heavy as it was prior to chemo.
question: what do you girls think about the darker lipsticks? I typically wear a light pink lipcolor - and sometimes do wear a darker color - sort of a reddish shade. Just curious. I sometimes think that the darker colors make a woman look hard and make the lips appear smaller. I guess red is in the in shade this fall. Well, I take that back, any color that calls attention to your lips is an "in color."
-
Since Raye brought it up.... :-) I was curious about the hair growth issue. I finished chemo in Jan09 and since then my hair doesn't grow much. The hair on my head is coming in SLOWLY. I barely get any under my arms now or on my legs. Of course, my bikini area came in just fine and back to normal.
My brows aren't really growing either. They are there but I don't have to get them waxed like I use too. I finish Herceptin in Nov09 and I have heard that slows down growth. Anyway, just curious. -
I got all my hair back. The hair on my arms, the hair under my chin, the light mustache.
The hair under my arms are very sparse and I wash with tea water to help with odor my family assures me is all in my head.
-
Raye- sort of an odd idea- but have you thought of pulling/tweezing the 2 underarm hairs?
I thing the dark lipsticks can be really nice but it depends on whether its lipstick, gloss, glaze etc. I like the darker ones when its sort of sheer not a heavy lipstick.
Hope I am making sense- meds change and I am very very sleepy

Dream- what does tea water do? is it real tea water?

CristlC, hair regrowth patterns vary. I had only A/C, no taxols, no tamox or AI's, and my eyelashes are still falling out every 3 months since June of 2007! Luckily, the fallout pattern is getting more and more staggered, more normal, although I still find they fall out in clumps of 3 or 4 at a time.
I've never heard anyone say they thought A/C had affected their head hair regrowth but I believe I have strange patterns there, too. My hair is naturally very thick and now it's just normal. Not what I'd call thin but nothing like before. Of course, the old gray mare she ain't as young as she used to be, either.

Yeah, Raye, just pluck the suckers from your pit. rofl. And, yes, I do think dark lipstick makes lips look smaller and thinner and the wearer older. So, it depends upon your lips. I think you have nice, full lips and could pull it off.
Dream, do you mean tea tree or regular tea?
This is sort of makeup related. I'm finally thinking of nips/tats. I'm almost decided to forgo the nips as my own is small and delicate. No need to match a big marble.
The tats are a different story, though. I would like the cherry topping on the cake. I'm thinking 3-D would be perfect if I could find someone to do them expertly. I've started a thread on this over on the recon forum. Basically, I want a very, very pale pink tat and am scared I'll end up with beige or tan or something. Nervous as a cat.
-
Hello darling ladies!
I am alive and at home since last thurs. My surgery results won't be known for a few weeks to see how the nerves they released recover.
My hospital stay was the 5th circle of hell--had to stay 2 extra days because, IMO, of poor nursing and medical care (interns).
I got a lot better this Mon. when I rec'd a cortisone inj. in my hip-perfect storm: back surgery and hip pain which everyone relates to back and is actually bursitis in VERY painful form---could hardly sit on the potty, turn in bed, you name it.
So glad to read you are all still having fun---keep up the good work and I'll visit more later.
Hugs to all and thanks for your sweet thoughts!
Dotti
-
Dotti, are you saying you didn't need the back surgery and it's your HIP that is more the problem? Yikes!
Raye, I used to be able to wear the red, but they say that only one part of your face should be the "wow". Now that I wear glasses, I wear more eye makeup so my eyes are my wow. Yah gotta pick your wow and you only get one wow. If you know what I mean.....wow....
-
Dotti! So glad to hear from you. Not so glad to hear about your hospital stay. Shame on those nurses and residents!!! Keep us updated on your results. Glad you are feeling better lady.
Barbe - I have two wows today!!! Eyes and lips. Poor makeup etiquette, I know. But I put on the darker lipstick and used a wet Q-tip to wipe most off, so the color is there, but not bright.
The hair did seem to take a while to come all of the way back. My chemo ended at the end of December and I stopped wearing a wig in March, but mind you, I didn't have a lot of hair then. It was covering my head, but not long at all. The bangs seemed to take the longest time t come in. I didn't do Herceptin or have to take any AI's. I have pic somewhere of when I first stopped wearing the wig. I will try and find it, so you can get an idea of what I am talking about. Of course, I will have a bandana (not a banana T) on my head, so it may be hard to see the hair.
Elaine - Plucking the hairs! HA! Sounds like it would hurt, but honestly, there is still some numbness in that area, so I probably would not feel a thing, but I'll stick to shaving, thank you very much.

Tina - the tatts sound exciting. Can they test a small area so you can see the color before doing the entire nip? I would nervous about getting the wrong color as well, but really don't know much about the part of the process. A couple of women I know personally didn't get their nips done.
