Her2+ & BRCA+?
Hi ladies..
I am getting my BRCA test results next week and I'm kind of nervous. I have a low chance of being BRCA+, 10%, but still.....nervous even though being + is not the end of the world.
My friend mmm5 stated that Her2 gals are most likely NOT BRCA gene carriers. I just wanted a show of hands of those woman who HAVE had the test done and if they are - or +.
TYIA!

I had it done, no BRCA gene of any kind here
-
My tumor was Her2++++ - BRCA1 & BRCA2 tests were negative (good question Lexislove!)
-
Lexislove,
Only BRCA1 is strongly associated with so-called triple negative tumors. So if you are BRCA1, a HER2+ tumor is less likely, though not impossible. BRCA2 can be associated with any kind, hormone pos or neg, HER2 pos or neg.....
Good luck with your test result though
-Helena.
-
My Genetic Counselor said the same. That Her2+ Is less apt to be BRCA.
I was Negative BRCA
-
I was tested and was negative for both BRAC 1 and 2.

LLove I just have to say how much I like you, you are just great. Maybe I get sick comfort in that you and others on here are so much like me. I just knew you would post on this thread as I would and you are always so on top of it. I just had a big LOL because I came over expecting to see this question and feel comforted by the fact that you posted and I am not as odd as I think by this blessed worrying.
I too am very very HER2 positive and in answer to your question I am BRC 1 and 2 Neg.
I hope you will have the best vacation ever, please let us know the fun things you do and how you let go of BC for 7 weeks, I would like to take a tutorial on that......LOL
-
Theres got to be some funny stuff and laughter with all of this right?
-
I hope so..maybe my test will come back BRCA 3....ha!
I can't wait for my vacation.I just know it will do me some good.
P.S. Thank you for the sweet compliment!
-
Hi Lexilove,
I am also triple+, got tested for the BRCA genes - I am negative for the BRCAs. My oncologist told me it is rare to be Her2+ and BRCA+ - always a possibility, but a slim one.
So try not to be too nervous. The stress is not good for you.
-
Thank you all that have responded so far...I'm feeling a lot less anxious. I just want to put BC on the back burner finally...this is, was, last thing on my check list.
-
Her2+ only
Negative
-
Sorry-but I'm HER2, and BRCA2!! (Trust me to be different....)
-
Thank you all.
Paprika, I know what you mean by now having some relief becuse you were a gene carrier. IF...I am carry a gene, I would feel the same way. At least I would now know what caused the breast cancer.
I'm just trying to rationalize it out. If I am a BRCA carrier..that means other breast off and ovaries gone. Well....I was almost leaning to an ooph anyways after finishing Lupron ect (then those lung cancer findings came out regarding woman who have removal of ovaries while pre menopausal).
My "healthy" breast.....if it would have to be moved so be it.
My final exchange surgery isn't untill Novemeber..so knowing these results NOW is a good thing, just in case I need to schedule more surgery time...uggghhhh.
Any other woman out there Her2+ & BRCA+ ??
-
Me too (BRCA2)
Sorry Lexi......
But hope you will be OK.
-Helena.
-
It's ok..I asked!!..lol.
So..correct me if I'm wrong, but are her2+ woman likely to be the BRCA2 carrier?
Just like BRCA1 is linked with being TN?...funny.
-
Paprika,
I was diagnosed at 30.I'm 32 now. I'm done with having children, the only thing that concerns me with ovary removal if quality of life issues and aging way b4 my time (oseteoperosis..increse risk of heart disease..blah ..blah...)
I am hoping that some studies surface in the next couple of years regarding pre menopausal woman and removal of ovaries IF it is beneficial at preventing a BC recurrence or not.
Removal od the other breast..I'm just chicken and don't want to have any other surgery if I don't really have to...<sigh>
I JUST WANT TO KNOW!!
Oh ya...my genetic councellor is giving my results over the phone. she will then send the info to my onc and GP. what a way to start my morning ...coffee and BRCA results..yipee*~
-
Yes, I think BRCA1 is more associated with TN. But it is all relative. I think it is possible to BRCA1 and NOT have a TN tumor. Strange that they give you the results over the phone.
Good luck!
-
Lexi...to confuse the issue even more. I had a mastectomy at primary diagnosis in 1996. Following the genetic results some years later, I opted to have the healthy breast removed, and a hysterectomy. Sadly, several years later (Nov 2007), I was diagnosed with mets to pleura, liver and bone. Although I was warned that this could happen, I had felt that I had to do as much as I could to minimise the risk of recurrence-but sadly for me, the prophylactic surgery did not contain the risk. If you have additional surgery, your risk will be decreased substantially-but it can never be completely removed. With hindsight, I'm still glad that I had the surgery-it's only speculation, but had I not had the surgery, I may have had the recurrences sooner-who knows? I didn't have reconstruction at either stage-I'm quite comfortable with my body image, so it was never a huge issue in this respect for me.
-
To me that is really incredible Elaine, that you had a recurrence after such a long time. But I saw that you posted a few times about the PARP inibitor trial - I hope you will get a great result!!!!!!
-
Elaine - did you ever receive Herceptin?
-
Negative on BRCA test and I am HER2 and Estrogen Positive!!
-
Swim, I did indeed receive herceptin (in conjunction with taxotere, which worked well, and we had 50% reduction). However, when we continued on herceptin alone, the tumours started to regrow again. My onc then tried me on xeloda and tykerb, which did nothing for me. We now wonder if I may still repond to herceptin, but not tykerb. However, as helena pointed out, I am now on a PARP trial, and the criteria of that stipulated no other drugs (although I may if necessary be able to have bisphosphonates, if the bones deterirate too much). Initial response to this has been promising-I was scanned after 2 cycles, and had slight reduction in the pleura, stability in the liver, and slight progression in some of the bones. I'm on the BRCA2 arm of the trial, and my gut feeling is that potentially this is the way forward for genetic cancers.
We were disappointed to get no response from tykerb-theoretically, as I responded to herceptin, I should have responded to this-but again, that returns us to the old problem-what works for one patient, may not necessarily be any use to another.

LLOVE
Asked my Onc today as i had to get blood work, Rare for Her2 to be Braca 1, slight chance for Braca 2 but still not as common.
Have you gotten results yet?
Be Well -
thanks mmm5 !
I get my results in 11 hours..lol. My stomach is turning! It's 10:00pm here (pacific time). Soon as I here the results, I'll be postin!
Night...night!!
-
Wishing you the Best. I have my fingers crossed for you!!!!
-
Results..........NEGATIVE !!!!!!
-
Great news!
-
See!
-
Wonderful news Lexislove - you must feel so relieved!
Elaine - I'm wondering if you ever had a second biopsy done on any of the areas where the mets showed up. Sometimes it shows that the breast cancer has changed from Her2+ to Her2- in which case Herceptin won't work. Also sometimes it shows that the ER/PR status also changes. Have you been to www.her2support.org?
-
Yeah!!!!!!!!
