    Marin,

I am 50 and have freckles and sunspots from my sun goddess youth. I have used Mary Kay and L'Oreal microdermabrassion kits. I also used Avon's resurfacing cleanser (unfortunately, it is now discontinued).  I have used them off and on for the last 2-1/2 yrs. I have noticed a difference. I wouldn't say that it was drastic, but I haven't been as diligent as I suppose I should have. They do help with fine lines also.

Everyone I know says that I look better now than I did before I started the chemo 2 yrs ago. I guess it is because of the microdermabrasion kits. It surely isn't because of the chemo. OR maybe they were just being nice. LOL

I know that I do not look like my age. When I meet folks they are surprised when I tell them how old I am.

I am afraid that I didn't read any of the previous posts just yours so I hope this helps,

    C

Dream, I am havng such a brain fart about the name of that orange smell satsua or something like that from the body shop??? It's my favorite scent of body wash in the world... OMG- why can't I think of the name????

Marin, if you try the micro kit please let me know what you think. I'm afraid to use it b/c I think it will irritate my skin or make me break out... but if you go first I'll gladly follow.Laughing

I changed to Bare Minerals for a foundation about 2 years ago and never looked back.  As I age and get the fine lines and wrinkles, its the only thing that doesn't show them.  Plus, they are chemical free for the most part.  All except the mineral veil and I hardly ever use it even though I have it.

    Thanks girls:)

Beth - It's about $22.50. So I think with yours and everyone elses comments I'll probably stick with the Clinique.

I have extremely dry skin due to medical conditon so unfortunately mineral powders dont work for me at all. Kind of a bummer as I have friends who use Bare Minerals / Bare Essentials and they just rave about them. Sigh...

I am close to being out and thought it might be a good time to try something new; but I'm thinking now I should stick with what I know works. :)That said, of course I'll keep reading to see what everyone else is using / trying. ;)

     TTFN!

Marin, I'm sending you a PM with link showing someone I personally know that has had a Croton Oil Peel.  Her results were just phenomenal!  That said, it is quite a drastic peel.  There are all kinds done in both dermatologists' and plastic surgeons' offices.  Read some of the other stuff from the website I send you.

I had monthly peels for years at my aesthetician's.  Basically some were light glycolic peels and others were a bit more abrasive.  My skin, which is THICK LOL, responded very well to all of them, esp. when it was younger and oilier.  Since chemo, I've not been back as that was a good excuse to break an expensive habit but I have kept up the dermabrasion once or twice a week with one of those Neutrogena Skin Rejuvenator kits.  I love it.  Never irritates my skin and keeps it glowing.

I think if you want more startling results to kick start your skin program, you might consider an office procedure.  Then, follow up with at home maintenance.

If you want, I can send you some pics with closeups of my skin which isn't in bad shape for my old age!

Wow, thanks for the feedback, y'all, and for the PM, Tina. Since I barely made my mortgage this month (believe me, I'm not exaggerating in the slightest!), I don't think that I'm in any position to try an office procedure, but I'll keep it in mind for when I win Powerball (oops, did I forget to buy that winning ticket, again, for last night's drawing? Wink). I'm going to teach 2 extra aerobics classes this month and will put the money to good use (not my mortgage...don't be silly!)...a microderm kit, a peel and some cream. I have no trouble covering the spots by using a very light coat of Dermablend after moisturizing. Then, if I'm not working out or going in the water, I use a bit of foundation...or nothing! The tinted moisturizer that I've been raving about is what I use all of the other times. It's got an SPF of 30 (I think) and provides excellent coverage. I'd like to fade these spots so that I can wake up in the morning, without makeup of course, looking gorgeous. This has become a concern only since I've been single, mind you. When I woke up before (while married)...well, I just woke up and got out of bed. Never gave a thought to how I looked then and i doubt if my husband cared, but now that I'm lingering for long periods of time...well, you know....Kiss

PS- Tina, you are absolutely stunning! I think that this is the first pic I've seen of you that gives an idea of how you actually look (before it's been mostly just your hair, right?). Anyway, if the stuff you use is responsible for how you look, "I'll have whatever she's having"!!!!!

Sorry to sound ignorant, but is a microdermabrasion kit one of those brushes that you use on your face with cream - like a big toothbrush? I would like to try one - maybe the Neutrogena or Mary Kay. I have a couple of lightish spots on my face, although I am diligent about keeping a lot of sunscreen on and never have tanned my face. Age, I guess.

Barbie - that is not a bad price for the foundation considering it probably lasts quite a long time? I used to wear Clinique Super Balance makeup - but since I've gotten older, don't wear foundation, as it makes my lines more apparent.

C - I can tell by your avatar, you don't look your age. My goodness, what a sexy, cute avatar. Lookin good!

Speaking of looking our ages, I got CARDED the other day! WHOO. But it was for cigarettes, I fell off of the wagon. My girlfriend from HS passed away from pancreatic cancer two weeks ago and I went out and bought a pack, because I was so upset - no excuse, I realize. I stink. But today, I have on a patch and have climbed back on the wagon.

Beth, first let me congratulate you on your fabulous day! Winning a nation-wide contest was only the beginning - a raise, too! You were sure hitting on all cylinders, girl!

I will cast another vote for the Mary Kay micro-dermabrasion set. If you've got sensitive skin (I surely do!) you just use it less often; strong skins use it once or twice a week. And there's a 100% money-back guarantee - just like CVS. I don't think, with consideration given to your tender years, Beth, that you should invest in an in-office procedure. Wait a few years 'til you need it - and NOW go spend your money on more Athleta outfits!

Marin - I will second my opinion about the MK, for refining texture etc. If you use a quinine product, choose one that is very gradual. I have had two friends that got splotchy results and they seem to be permanent. Surprised  I'm glad to hear you're being diligent about facial sunscreen this summer. I remember more than one occasion where you got, uhm, a little pink last season. But you were having FUN!

Raye - WTG on getting carded! Now throw all evidence of those evil coffin nails away! The MK set I recommended is not motorized. I find a use it more regularly if a don't have to get a lot of 'stuff' and equipment out. Although I have not had to buy it for a good while - they may have updated the product. Moon-face from a solid 8mo. on decadron stretches out most problematic wrinkles. I am gonna need real help  if/when I get off this evil drug and my neck rolls turn into turkey wattles!

    Tongue out

Lisa-- Turkey wattles, helmets... is anyone photographing all of this for later blackmail use?

They give awards every night while I'm kayaking in Vail... none of which I want to win. The award for the most water improvement is a PINK HELMET!!!!! And you have to wear it all day. Um, no thanks. Don't they know pink isn't my color???

Tried the Straight Making version of the no Frizz and it works!  Blew my hair out and although I was working out in high humidity all day yesterday, very,  very little fuzziness.  I am impressed.  However, I think I'll stick with the curly stuff as that is what my hair wants to do even when I blow it out straight.

I  wonder how Beth's hairdo is holding up as she paddles her kayak through the rapids?  Bethie, can't wait to hear of your adventures. xox

Anyone here try any of that HD makeup?  Besides the HD brand, there are several lines offering HD formulations.  Supposed to be for HDTV.  Conceals all our lines and warts. LOL

I think I need some loose powder to keep the "glow" off my face this summer and was thinking of one of the HD ones.  Smashbox has a version of it.

No, never had heard of it. Sounds like it would provide pretty heavy coverage. ?

I use a powder foundation by Lancome  - Dual Finish, I think it is called. Not too heavy, but provides a bit of coverage and shine control. The only wish it contained some sun protection- like that City Block by Clinique does.

I saw this on GMA this morning and thought about this thread. there are a few ideas to try out. http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/BeautySecrets/story?id=8310635&page=1

I would like to try the cold water to dry your fingernail polish. they didn't talk about it on the air but it is in the article.

The dry shampoo is a good idea - equal parts baking soda and baby powder. sprinkle on hair and massage through hair then brush out. I think when I was a teen and was in a body cast for 3 months my mom tried something similar to this on my hair.

Hey, Sheila.  Coooool.  I'll have to try some of those.  I have tried the cold water on my fingernails but don't think it did much to dry them faster.

We've sure been quiet lately.  I've been getting ready for another darned surgery next week.  Went out and bought some new jammie bottoms today for the event.  I should be "in" for five days, give or take.  Maybe this belongs over on Fashion.  LOL  I think we're all the same people.

Well, I felt the need to rescue this thread from obscurity and will just report 2 new "findings." One, Cover Girl lipstain....I love it! I've mentioned before that I never wear lipstick because they're always too creamy and my long hair ends up stuck to it, framing my mouth in a most unattractive fashion. But the lipstain does just that...stains the lips and leaves them naturally textured. This stuff just might bring my lips out from lifelong hiding!

And then there's my "tip" for using waterproof mascara, something that has terrified me since losing my eyelashes 3 times after chemo. Getting that stuff off is impossible, but I'm so anal that I'd pull and tug until I'd lost 10 lashes or so.I finally gave up. Then I recalled reading that layering the waterproof with regular mascara works perfectly, avoiding the running that you get from regular, but making it easier to remove the whole mess at the end of the day. So I've been putting on regular and then waterproof immediately afterwards (don't let the first coat of regular dry too much) and it's been fabulash! Maybe y'all knew about this tip already, but I'm thrilled to have "discovered" it!

I tried Makeup Forever's HD foundation and did not like it one bit.  I bought it from Sephora, along with a really great makeup brush - I kept the brush but returned the makeup.  I have been wearing Chanel's Teint Innocence foundation - it's a cream, for a couple of years and really love it.  It's buildable, so you can go as light or heavy coverage as needed and even help as concealer if you need it to.  It goes on with a sponge.  another one I alternate with is Shishedo's The Makeup Dual Balancing foundation.  This is a liquid that I dab on and use the makeup brush to even out.  It's great for putting on a quick or light face, especially running around in the south Florida heat and humidity.  I've tried other creams, they seem to work best on me for lasting coverage, but nothing is like the chanel.

Oh, I have used Chanel for years, too!  Love it but wondered about the new HD stuff.  Maybe the best solution is to stay in subdued light not bright ones!   I also use a Chanel foundation brush sometimes but when I want a particularly sheer look I wet a sponge applicator and then spread the foundation.  Mostly, I don't use foundation, though, just blush and eye makeup.

That's an interesting tip about the mascara, Marin.  Never heard it.  How ya been?  We have sure been quiet.

Nah . . . it's a very costly thing for me, but since I'm in the public eye a lot with my job, I figure it's worth the $$, plus it lasts a long long time - like 6 months.  I have tried so many out there and the only other one that came close was Clinique, which I use if I can't get or can't afford the Chanel.

barbe, I use it so little that the price really is insignificant.  Mostly I just use blush and eye stuff.  Only wear foundation occasionally but when I do I want the color to be spot on.  I think I've said before that the Chanel is the only brand I've found that I can find a good match.  I think I paid something like $35.00, not the end of the world.

Plus, I made up for it with that $2.99 leopard undie set I mentioned over on Fashion. Wink

I have a dear friend who works for Bobbi Brown Cosmetics...she is usually ticked off when I purchase anything (she has boxes of samples etc)...I have to admit that I have gotten use to it but HATE to ask for things.

I don't know who make The Balm, its carried at Sephoria...I am going to try and get there today to check it out. I also just read about Jane Iredale caosmetics and they havd a special makeup remover cloth, just use water and this cloth - its suppose to be all you need. Found a store/salon that carries her stuff so I am going to check it out (happens to be on the way to Sephoria)

Was just reading some fashion mag and saw that Anastasia has a new, felt-tipped brow color tool that is supposed to be just fabulous, esp. for those with sparse brows or none from chemo.  I went to sephora to order it but, alas, they are out of stock at the moment.

I saw the same thing about the Anasthasia brow tool.

Has anyone tried that mineral foundation that is on the infomercial with Leeza Gibbons (slow day on TV Sunday)? Looks really lovely on the ladies on TV, but I've never used a mineral makeup and not sure how my skin would react or look. I use a powder now and haven't used a liquid makeup for a few years. Just looking for something new.

Raye, I tried the Bare Escentuals several years ago when they were fairly new and just about the only kid on the block but sent the whole lot back because I didn't think they were anything special.  Okay, just not particularly worth the price.
