My mom used to make her own bread crumbs (with no foodprocessor.) She would simply take the ends off of bread or the heel of the bread and put in a brown medium paper bag and let get hard. Make sure it's not plastic bag because that would cause moisture and mildew. But dry bag. Then when hard she simply put the bag on the cutting board and rolled it with her rolling pin and presto - bread crumbs. Or I guess you could bake them first (instead of drying.) Just thought I'd add my 2 cents. - Debs

Cleaning house and getting ready for the grandbabies and then off to a meeting and Zumba tonight! Hoping the weather warms up so the kids can get in the pool while they are here!
Make it a great day!

Gee Lisa, on top of everything else, you are a grandmother?? You are one amazing woman. I am so jealous! My sons are confirmed bachelors I am afraid.
I just took grandma back to my uncle's. It is so hard to see her mind in such bad shape. She cannot remember anything. So all the stories she has are lost. She worked in a factory during WW II and lived through over a dozen presidents, and cannot remember anything. She barely knows half her family anymore. But I did notice that after a few days of green tea instead of coffee, and some healthy food, she was pretty lucid the last day. She stopped making the same comment every 2 minutes. My aunt and uncle have a terrible diet, and bad health so she is not getting any brain food from them. Last night we went out to dinner. I managed to find some fish and salad on the menu while my uncle ordered this turkey and potato dish for himself and my grandmother that was slathered with gravy and cheese. Plus they had some kind of creamy chicken rice soup that a spoon would stand up in it was so thick. The portions could have fed a family of four and they ate every last bite. It made me sick. I never ate like that and I got cancer! But then again, they did not grow up in such a polluted environment and ate off their own farm, so they had a better start. I am hoping that at least, I am making a better finish.
I sure hope that all that I am doing will keep my mind sharp. I do not want to be like that. My great grandmother lived to almost 90 and I use to love to hear all her stories about the old days. After she outlived her son and siblings, she always said at least she had her memories. My grandmother does not even have that now. It makes me so sad.
-
Vivre, My Mom has dimentia, it is sad. I have not visited for a year now (going in July) but I hear she is much worse, and it makes me sad too. She is 83 this summer.
Reporting in on my exercise! I did 47 min on the eliptical crosstrainer again today! Tons of sweat, so I know it was a good workout. Yoga tonight!
My home-made raspberry lemon cheesecake was a huge hit last night with my circle girlies! Only a sliver left, thank goodness! I ate one piece covered in berries. It had dairy and sugar, but the last time I baked that cake was in 2007!! So I figure once every 2 years is okay.
Making it a great day!!!
Spring.
-
Lisa, I too cannot believe you are a grandmother! But when we have our babies young, that can happen! LOL Hoping for nice warm weather for you!! We have been way below normal on the west coast, which is a nice change since we enter fire season early here.
Vivre & Spring, breaks my heart that the elderly ailments can be so awful, its disheartening. My DH grandpa lived to 99 sharp as a tack and no ailments and put butter in his coffee everyday (gross) and worked in the Quicksilver mines that were full of mercury...go figure!! I tell ya, if we knew what triggered that darn "C" switch....sigh
Spring, how do you stay on the elipitcal trainer so long? When I do that machine is really agitates my hip flexors so I have to do other things. I love "circle girlies", happy you all enjoyed the cake! heehee
My hubby just bought a home gym and will bring it home tomorrow!! I am so excited! He's a keeper too, one of the good ones! I got really lucky the 2nd time around and feel so blessed.
Walked the trail yesterday, my legs are really sore from this one long uphill part and stretched. Watched Mama Mia the movie (finally) and had to get up and dance at the end! Lisa, thought of you!! LOL
Making it a great day too!
Kari
-
Well technically, it is my stepson and his family, but I consider him mine. I would have been 16 if I actually gave birth to him! LOL But everybody tells him, you look just like your Mom (me). It's funny the kids all look like siblings, even though we were a blended family!
Got the house cleaned and started some of the cooking now need to head to Zumba.
Spring, you need to post that recipe!
Kari, glad you got up and boogied! LOL I can't sit still when there is a good song playing anywhere! LOL
Vivre...I have a feeling you are going to be around for a long time! I think we all will!
Make it a great day/night...whatever it is wherever you are!
-
Glad you clarified Lisa! haha...although technically still doable!!
-
vivre ~ Such a poignant story about your Grandma and Great Grandma, too. And sorry to hear that your Mom is dealing with dementia, Spring. Like bc, it just seems to be epidemic. I think we all need to work on keeping our minds as active as our bodies, because just like our bodies, our minds also deteriorate from lack of use. And I know what you mean about how disgusting it can be watching some people eat. There are a few Food Network shows that gross me out -- like the ones where they visit BBQ places and everyone is pigging out on huge platters of ribs and fries. Totally gross!!!
Yes, Spring, please share that recipe with us! It sounds delicious! And, Kari, your DH sounds like a real sweetheart.
Well, I enjoyed my favorite bc benefit this a.m. -- a Healing Touch Massage that our local hospital offers. While there, I stopped at my rad onc's office to ask if they thought I should have her take a look at that lumpy spot that's developed since rads, and that I keep pushing on twice a day to see if it's still there. (Spring, we talked about this recently.) Anyway, they were so nice, and got me in to see her right after my massage. She definitely felt it, but said she has no idea what it is, so scheduled me for an ultrasound. I'm sure it's nothing to worry about, but the realization that you can't have a lump or a bump without worrying about it and then having doctors wanting to test it is just a bit sobering. As I told my DH on the phone, I'm so tired of this, and just want my old life back! Deanna
-
Deanna, It really is sobering waiting for test results!! I walk around and although I always try to be positive and upbeat, those thoughts creep in my mind "what if..." and then I switch my mind to something else...is this the new normal? Thanks goodness for this site, I don't know what I'd do, I really look forward to coming here. Please keep us posted.
That massage sounds wonderful and so glad the rad onc's office took you right in!
-
Deanna--I know what you mean. I thought I was in preventative mode and then at my first new baseline mammo, they ultrasounded two existing cysts that were in the same area of the "bad boob" and decided they wanted to aspirate one to get more info on it. Ugh--I was trying to be calm about it but it really got to me. Luckily it wasn't too bad of a procedure and they said right as they were doing it that it was a normal cyst. Whew! But still unnerving. I hope the same for whatever you are feeling in yours...
-
Deanna, yes I have that lump along the scar line thing, and will show them in July when I go for all my appts (onc, rads onc, regular doctor, etc). Ugh. Let us know what they say.
OK, now, I am posting this cheesecake recipe, but I only make it once every 2 years!!! So realize this is very decadent for those of us off sugar and dairy!! (there is fruit though, LOL!!!) If anybody really does make it, let me know first as there are some hints and tips I use to make sure it does not crack. (A cheesecake is like a custard so can be very fussy! but I am an expert now!)
Reporting in on exercise! 4.4 miles this am, did 2 loops around our favorite park with my DH. We went even earlier and there were some hard core runners there. I wonder if I can run someday. I look at them with awe....
Lisa, OK!! 16 year old makes more sense!!! I can't wait to be a grandma! I mean, ok, I can wait as they are only 17 & 19, but grand kids must be the bomb!
Kari, report back on that Gym!! Woot! Go hubby!!! We have an eliptical cross trainer in our house, we invested in an industrial strength one years back (has it's own generator) and was the best $$ we ever spent. Kari, just start slowly and build up. It is a great cardio work-out with no impact for our joints! I watch TV while doing it, and the time flies!
Make it a great day, (as our Lisa says!) all you lovelies! I do love you girls, just wanted you to know!
Spring.

We took the beamer out for a 10 mile ride last eve. through the forest preserve. They said it was going to rain, so of course, the weather was perfect. Honestly, do these forecasters have any clue?
Girls, one of the reasons I love the thermography is because there is no waiting for results. You can see right there if there are any changes while you stand there. I have had 3 now and I can put them up side by side to see the changes as my breast has healed from the rads. I also can see if there is any vascular changes or asymetry. They do not look for "lumps" so scar tissue does not worry me because it shows that it has no blood vessels going to it, which would indicate a growing tumor. Plus it is totally painless, and does not subject me to any more radiation, which scares the daylights out of me. The FDA has approved them, they just are not used as much because mammos are a cash cow. The sad thing is that women would be more proactive and do therms regularly because they are sfe and painlesss, if more doctors understood them.
-
Vivre, what the heck is thermography?? I get digital mammos, but still the last 3 showed no cancer in my breast...dies your dr. office do those instead of mammos? or is it because you've had bc?? just trying to understand. Your forest preserve sounds wonderful!!!! and you made me laugh regarding the weather forecaster...I get so tired of all of our local stations saying "viper radar" or microcast meteorologists or some other 10 names they use referring to their forecasting capabilities!! LOL!!
DH is bringing the new gym home today in his buddy's old beater van! LOL! It wouldn't fit in anything else!! He said "I sure hope I don't die from exhaust fumes from this old van"...oh dear. I will take it slow. It will be so good to build muscle again!!
Spring, that is so great that your hubby is able to walk with you in the a.m.! Does he work from home too?? That is FAR!! I thought of you this a.m. and hopped on the treadmill for a quick 23 min. program (included hills) before running out of time, had to get ready for work!! (We have a TV in that room too and a boom box!! and that really helps) But hey, got in 1.2 miles already! Good thing, cause my fellow staff coworker called in sick! So I'm stuck here thru lunch AARRGGHH!!!!
Make it a GREAT DAY cuties!
-
Oh No!!! My DH's buddy's van broke down on the freeway!!!!!!! An hour and a half from home....shoot there is precious cargo in that clunker! my hubby and the gym! AAA is on the way!
-
OMG, Spring, that recipe looks fabulous! I love Ina Garten. Every recipe of hers I've ever tried has come out 5-star restaurant perfect. I'll definitely splurge with this one sometime soon, maybe for DH's July b'day. Speaking of desserts and sugar (which I never eat anymore), a couple of nights ago, I had two small bites of cake and promptly got a headache -- something I never get since I went off caffeine, and I guess sugar, too. It's funny how we sometimes don't realize how bad some foods make us feel until we eliminate them from our diets. I also had half a cup of decaf coffee with some of that vanilla creamer at the rad onc's office yesterday, and I couldn't believe how sugary and chemical-ish and disgusting it tasted. And I used to be totally addicted to that vanilla creamer stuff!
Glad you're giving that new bike a workout, vivre! A 10-mile ride through a forest preserve sounds lovely! And Spring, wohoo for starting off the day with 4.4 miles! That should more than balance out a few bites of cheesecake!
Totally OT -- did anyone read about the 50 car pile up in California early this a.m.? I had, and then my son, who had been in Las Vegas for a couple of days, calls while I was out walking to tell me he'd come through that exact stretch of road shortly before the pile-up. He said it was so foggy, you couldn't see a thing. I think he was a bit shaken when he read about the pile up. Thank goodness he was just a bit earlier, so a lot less traffic. Deanna
Kari ~ Just saw your post. I will pray that your DH is safe!
-
Go Vivre!! What a nice ride!
I was too pooped to walk today, so I'll have to get on that cross trainer later today. It felt good to sleep a little longer. Sometimes my body is saying, noooooooooooo. lol.
Kari! Ahhck!!! Let us know if hubby, the new gym, and the old van make it back??
Deanna, before you try the recipe shoot me a PM and I will give you my hits and tips for that cheesecake.
I've been using hand wieghts at my desk, I think I mentioned a bit back, and it seems to be working, I've noticed some more definition in my arms. So it's starting!
Spring.

Hi Ladies - New to this thread and need motivation! I've been reading your posts and they are very helpful. I used to run almost every night - now I am running maybe 2-3 days a week VERY SLOWLY, although I am good about doing my squats and push ups every other day.
Lisa, those arms of yours are spectacular - what is your secret?
Raye
-
Hi, Raye ~ Welcome! Glad you asked about arm exercises. A lot of us need that and we all want to know Lisa's secret! And I can relate to your comment about running slowly. I used to run 3 miles. Now I jog maybe 1/10th of a mile 2 or 3 times during my walks. But I can feel improvement each week, and I'm also very cautious now about not pushing myself and maybe hurting something, like an ankle or knee, that would keep me from getting out there.
Thanks, Spring ~ I will PM you when I get around to that recipe. And good idea about the hand weights. When I had that massage a couple of days ago and told the therapist about my aching finger joints, she explained how so many of our daily tasks keep our hands in a cupped position -- driving, typing, cooking, lifting weights. So, she did some work really stretching my fingers and hands outward, and showed me a couple of things to do at home and driving to undo the tightness. Anyway, just something I didn't know about and wanted to share, especially after you mentioned using hand weights. My hands haven't felt nearly as achey the past couple of days, since I've been working to release that cupped tension.
Kari ~ How's your precious cargo? Deanna
-
Good morning lovely ladies!
Welcome Raye!! I have never been a runner so kudos to those of you who run!! I wanted to ask about your push ups, I used to do those all the time pre surgery...how many do you do and in what position? any arm problems..lymph??
Deanna, my right hand (good arm) has been achy!!!! OH NOOOOOOO...need to focus on stretching these hands out! I sit at a computer all day long at work and type type type!!!
Clunker update:
So hubby had the clunker towed with the gym in the back. Asked a neighbor to help unload....after trying and trying to fit it through the front door they ended up sticking it in the garage. Clunker is now in the shop after hubby spent $$ trying to buy parts and fix himself (he was sooooo stressed out), so clunker is still at the shop...hubby gave the shop his buddy's number (finally) and said he's the owner, talk to him...So waiting to hear if we get clunker back today or what or if we have to drive it back to buddy or bay area or what tomorrow?? who knows...geez...However - that gym is NICE!!!!!!!!! I even did just a few arm exercises. I think we are going to try and get it in the house through a big slider in the back, but it may have to take up a new home in our formal living room!! haha!! I said, why not, we are empty nesters now, why is our house always set up for company, when we hardly have company?? LOL!! So we'll see, we have a little gym in one of the bedrooms, but no way that new gym will fit through the doorway.Got out for a brief walk, I was practically limping, my legs are just so sore from all the walking on the hills, and noticed it aggravated my hip again. Soooooo, I will need to lay off the "stud" walking for now! LOL!
Oh, I'm so excited, I get to see my very best friend tomorrow! We have been friends since 2nd grade and grew up 3 blocks apart. She is in transit moving from Hawaii to Oklahoma (job thing). I am going to her daughter's baby shower! She is already a grandma!
You other gals still out there? We haven't heard from some of you in awhile!! Joy, Patoo, PK and many more...???????? Thinking of all you!!!!
Make it a Fabulous day! (thought of Lisa)
-
Thanks Deanna and Kari!!
Deanna - Yes, that is how I started my running - walk some, run a bit, etc. Does help. Glad to hear you are feeling improvement! That is great. Before dx, I ran 5 miles - now I can barely do 3 and my achilles has been hurting if I bend a certain way, so you are so right about being careful as not to hurt something.
Kari - what type of arm exercises are you doing? I do 3 sets of 12 pushups every other day. Girl style - knees bent. I tried the regular military ones and fell flat to the floor! LOL. I've been doing them for over a year now and while I can see some results, there is still a little flabby arm look in the triceps area.
Interesting question about lymphedema - KNOCK ON WOOD - no problem with that as of yet, although I did have some tingling in my arm back in January where they took the nodes - I asked my rads onc about it and she said that it was most likely a little neuropathy from the Taxol, but to keep an eye on it.
Have a great time with your best friend tomorrow - how exciting.
Again thanks for the warm welcome ladies - have a wonderful weekend and week (I am off to the beach tomorrow for a week - YIPPEE).
Raye
-
Just checking in ladies...sounds like everybody is having a great day!
Welcome Raye! As far as my arms...I only do Zumba. I lifted weights in college, but haven't done that in years! I used to do wall push-ups, but no need for that. We do enough arm movements in Zumba to keep my muscles in shape! Well, there is the yard work too! LOL
Taught Zumba twice yesterday. Teaching at 4:30 today and then again at midnight for the Relay for Life and then 8 am tomorrow! May do some swimming tomorrow..depends on the weather!
Spring, thank you for the recipe...can you send me your tips as well!
Going to go spend time with the grandsons before I have to Zumba!!!!!!!!!!
Hugs to all!
-
Hubby came and picked me up for lunch! no word on the clunker yet...he did have a great workout on the new gym this a.m. he said!!
Raye, right now I'm not doing anything for my arms, I used to do the girlie push ups too. Tried a couple the other day and it felt GOOD to do them!! Will start some arm work on the new gym and go slow and see what happens...that's funny about the military style! I had worked my way up to doing those a few years back and could easily do pullups as well...well, those days are gone! LOL. I haven't experienced any lymphedema problems yet (Knock on wood too), but at times I feel some weird stuff going on in that arm! Also, where are you from? Which beach are you headed to? Have a GREAT time!!!!!
Lisa, that's right, your Relay is tonight!!!!!!!!!!!! Go get em girlfriend!!!!!!!!!! Have a great time with the grandsons and shakin your groove thing!
-
Raye--welcome! My two cents on arms--I was also worried abut LE!!--I finally got back into yoga and have noticed a difference in arm and core strength. I also do a program that a oncology-familiar trainer put together for me.
I am jealous of the at-home elliptical!! Would love that as I am so lazy about going downtown to the gym. Used to be convenient from my office but I no longer work downtown. I really need to join the YMCA that is close to home--with parking!
I miss the elliptical.
-
Kari, still here, I tend to lurk but not post often. Hi to all!
I still get motivated by you all, except Lisa, she makes me tired! (okay secretly wish I could be as ambitious as she is) No seriously, all of you keep me motivated. I am working out about5-6 days a week on the elliptical and then stretching and floor stuff. Lately DH and I have been taking the hound to the puppy park and we walk there for about an hour per night (except when it snowed last week) We are walking about 4-5 nights a week. I am happy to say I am down 8lbs! Only 25 more to go, don't think I will get it all off before our summer vac. in Hawaii but oh well, will keep trying.
Deanna I hope all turns out okay, I think it is just going to be scar tissue!
Anyone heard from mumayan or singapore chris?
-
I'm still here. Realized now that I need to visit this thread evenings when I get home because you all make me get up off this couch and get moving. Came here tonight, read and went and walked 2 miles. I just could not post without being able to say I did something today. So let's see if that will work for me going forward. LOL Whatever it takes, right!
-
patoo: I think I might try that too. Feeling bad about things today, got home way later then I wanted to from work every stinkin day this week. So, although I did a little something like walking, yoga, each day, I didn't get in near the amount I wanted too or that would make me feel good. Next week better be better, need you guys to hold me to it
-
I survived!!!!!!!!! Taught 5 zumba classes within 48 hours. Taught at the Relay for Life last night at midnight. Never got to bed until 3 am and then was back up at 7 am to teach at 8. I'm "zumba free" until Monday night.
Today I'm going to hang out at our pool with my family...as the son, DIL and grandsons are leaving tomorrow!
The sun is shining it is going to be a glorious day!
PK...sorry I make you tired! LOL
Make it a fabulous day!
Lisa
-
Lisa tired yes, inspiration most definately!!! Would kill for arms like yours!
Well, we did our walk this morning, only 45 min, we must have walked faster as it usually takes longer either that or Max (doggy) didn't stop to visit as many friends so we were faster. Anyway, it is hot already, not complaining just stating. Now we are off to pick up our second set of Jeff Dunham tickets, seems like I get to go after all!
Hope everyone has a great day!!
-
Welcome Raye!
Hi you other wonderful girlie friends!!!
So, confession: did not exercise Friday. So took 2 days off this week! I usually just take 1 day off. But today we walked our 4.4 mile loop and boy it was hot, but boy I feel good!
We're off to do the grocery shopping now. Anybody need me to pick them up anything? Ha!! lol...
Allie, the at home eliptical was a huge extravagance, but we use it all the time, and I figured (this was before BC dx) that it would be worth it in health savings. I am sure glad it is here now... Now that I am so committed to exercise! I keep thinking I am metabolizing estrogen and reducing insulin and squashing cancer every time I move!
Deanna, I am inspired by your bit of jogging. I need to do this. Someone sent me a "walk to run" program. I have not done it, still just walking.
I really want to do this though. I am wondering though if the hot is a good time to start?

I am trying to work up the motivation to pack the dog in the car and go for a hike. I stayed up too late last night watching the movie "he's just not that into you" (cute) since my hubbie was out of town. But the sun is coming out (I think it's a sign) and I know Beamer would be beyond appreciative...sigh. OK here I go...
