Radiation with tissue expander

Thank you Estepp that is a very encouraging FYI. I read one or two of the Dr. Yu's reports about radiating and all that. Good stuff.
I only had 3 days of rads last week and one day of simulation. Techies, nurse and doc didn't say a word about 3 days being two short. I end July 13th and that is on a Monday so......I dunno!
-
Lynn- glad to hear you are doing well
Jess- well it seems to be the normal thing a rash with rads did you ask your ong why this happens or do you know why? what is the 3d version? and what size implant is 270cc? trying to figure out what size i will be at the end of all of this...
Christy- welcome i also heard the amount depends on you as an individual
Estepp- welcome thanks for sharing your story with us this is very encouraging to us to hear great out comes keep us posted on your progress
-
Carolyn--The 3dimensional conformal radiotherapy combines multiple tx fields to deliver very precise doses of rx to the breast. It spares surrounding normal tissue. I have multifocal cancer--in numerous locations, one of which was close to the chest wall.
270cc is about a b cup size.
-
oh thanks ya I didn't know about that. How long after your sim was it before you started rad,s ?
-
Carolyn-I started rads the next day. The techies are wonderful and I am so happy to see their smiling faces. I am glad they know what they are doing. They are very picky. I want them to be that way.
-
really the next day wow they said they would call me in 3 to five day with my start date. well I hope I have the same experience as you with the techies....
-
Yes, I like them all so far. I haven't been as impressed with the doctor. The nurse P seems totally under his thumb and that sort of control bothers me, but I have to keep in mind that the radiation is killing any left over cancer cells and I don't want the BEAST back!!!!!!
-
Estepp-What stretches did you do?
-
Well Ladies I start my rads on Thursday June 4 hope all goes well
Hi Jess what was your last fill up before you started rads I am going in for one on wed and rad thurs and a little concerned anyone else had fill up that close to starting rads
-
I had my last fill several weeks ago, because we were under the impression i would not have rads. Some top studies have suggested being filled as much as possible is a good thing to help the skin from tightening too much....I don't know I guess it depends on the indiviudal. My skin is already tight, so PS wanted it expanded as much as possible. I definately look lopsided. 4 down 29 to go.
Good luck Carolyn. I'll be rooting for you on Thursday.

Hello All, I to found out I would have to do rads after surgery and TE's being placed and was expanded to 450cc's,in about a 5 week period. I also can tell you I had my last fill on a Wednesday and started rads the very next Friday. I had Tattoo's done and to be honest they aren't even as big as a freckle and they do have a variety of colors to choose from howeverthey will tell you the blue serves their purpose better and they are put in places that really don't show not to mention they do fade and alot quicker than a normal tat does. I did not have to have any saline taken out in order to do rads and am not lopsided at all, that being said I will tell you however that he did position the right one over slightly (not that noticeable) to the right as to keep it from being in the way. My PS also said that he will do my exchange in late July or early August and I will have my last rad treatment this Wednesday YEAH!!!!!! I have used Radiation Therapy oil by Natures remedy that I heard about on this website and will tell you that I didn't use it under the arm and did on the other parts being radiated and the arm is the only place that is giving me problems. I have had 28 of 30 treatments If You need to ask any ?'s please feel free and I have one for you gals. I have had 28 ntreatments and 2 to go but, they said that they will not be radiating my supraclavicle area for the last to have you heard of that before???? ( I have been burnt (inside can't see on the outside) and have a hard time swallowing and with food or meds getting stuck in my throat. Any suggestions??? Thanks in advance,
Deb
-
Debb---Congratulations on only two more to go! wooohoooo!. I wonder if the radiologist can give you something to help with the swallowing? I turn my head away and the techie said it was so they did radiate parts up in my neck and stuff, but i wonder if they are still hitting it.......
good luck, Deb.

Hey Lades,
12 days post rads and my skin is healing nicely, after turning a very lovely shade of purple!. My TE looks the same as when I started, let's hope it stays that way.
I don't think there's a set rule for the amount of tx's with a TE. I had 25, which might seem low to some. I did not get any boosts cause my rad onc. said there was not one specific area to concentrate on. They did give me the amount of dosages though to each area, it was something like 4500 to the node areas and 5000 to the breast/chest.
Carolyn and Deb -Congrats on almost finishing!!!! Deb-I did hear that when radiating the supra.node area that there's a chance of swallowing issues. So far I am ok on that end, but from what my doc. told me issues like that can turn up a few months after completing rads.
Sue
-
Jess- my skin is really tight as well but all should go well.. how did day 5 go today?
Deb congrats on almost being done This is the first time i have ever heard of the swallowing thing keep us posted on what they say and how you are doing.
Sue nice to hear your skin is healing up so nice.
Has anyone heard of Silver Shield I picked this up at the health food store and read up on it great burns due to rads and many other great things like it helps fight cancer cells it might be worth it to look into it I will let you know how it works once i start my rads.
-
Hello All, Tomorrow is the last one YAY!!!!!!!!! Anyways as for the swallowing they said that it can happen and of course if it can it will to me not to mention I had scoliosis which moved everything in my body in the wrong place so go figure and they did give me lidocaine to swallow to numb it somewhat, Haven't heard of Silver Shield but the Natures Inventory Radiation therapy support.
Thanks for all the support,
Deb

Deb, that is really great to hear about you too! Please let us know how your exchange goes.. how your incision heals. I cannot believe you are so luck to get exchange a few months after.. good for you ! My PS does not even want me to think exchange until 6 months.. so I am going to BEG him this Friday, when I see him again, to do exchange in August.. 5 months after..., as I am going to be too busy in Sept and I am wanting these things OUT... Let us know how you heal!
Jess...
I stretched arms above head... arms back... whatever I could to get the pulling feeling so that I felt like I was keep the scar tissue loose.
Deb.. do you feel a lot of scar tissue? I sure do
Laura
-
Does anyone's breast look different-like shape or position? Mine is already starting to change. I am so worried!! I suppose once it is done, perhaps it wil shift back to a better spot? Maybe that is why some of the PS' want us to wait until the exchange---to give the breast and implant time to adjust.
-
Jess- how is it changing? did you ask the ong what that might be? how is your skin holding up i just had a fill yesterday and boy i cant even pinch anything is your skin like that?
-
Yes, Carolyn it is sort of like I just got a fill. The radiology doctor said he thinks it is a bit of swelling and i should probably take an aspirin to reduce the swelling. He said everything look really great so far and that I shouldn't worry so much. So, I will take a deep breath and hope he is right. I do feel better today. Thank you for asking Carolyn.
How is everyone?????
-
Jess good if he said you are looking good not to worry. Hang in there and have a good night
yes it has been a little bit since we have heard from the rest of us ladies how are you all doing?
-
Laura, No I don't think I am having a scar issue as of yet. Yes I am lucky on how quickly I am to have everything done and my PS said I am lucky on how I heal and how I have kept the rad burns to a minimum. I hope all goes well for everyone of you ladies.

Today is day 8 for me. I am glad to be able to have a weekend off. I think this thread is great because every where else I read the idea of radiating TEs is not good. I did however get on a web page designed for women who had augmentation for "enhancement" and one of the suggestions made on the web page was to "massage" the area of tightness. So guess what? I massaged the muscle over my TE. I thought, if they had lumps and bumps, essentially the beginning signs of what leads to capuslar contraction and one of the suggestions for early signs of this is to massage the implant and the skin and the muscles around it, why shouldn't I? I wasn't told not to. Anybody??
-
Massage away.. I did. My PS said it would not hurt a thing.. It would not help anything... but if it made me feel better...hehe.. so I did it.. still do.
I saw my PS today. I am two months out of Radiation. I do not have CC and my skin looks so good that my PS is going to let me have exchange at 4 months... I CANNOT BELIEVE IT! I have the toughest PS around..hehe.. I have exchange July 20th. So I will let you ladies know.
During rads I used Aquaphor three times a day and Bio Oil at night in the shower... I have no idea if this gave me the outcome I had.. but I thought I would put it out there for you ladies ...
I will keep you updated on how I change in the next 6 weeks until my exchange to silicone after radiation.
Gods Love
Laura
-
Laura--Yeah, that's what the rad nurse told me: the massage, the lotion is just to relieve symptoms and if you're gonna get CC , you're gonna. I am glad you are getting surgery so soon. That's gotta feel GREAT!!!!!!!
I use aquaphor and night and skintegrity right after tx. I use vaseline aloe three times a day. the skintegrity feels really nice right after tx-cools me right down.
My foob looks sort of bumpy--it sort of ebs and flows - I think that will resolve itself after rads.
-
Hi all. I didn't know this thread was here..Glad to have found it.
I am partially expanded, on one isde to 340cc on the other to 240cc. No where near what I expect to be in the end. The PS didn't have time to fill before I started rads. The larger side is being radiated, the smaller side is just 'out of the way'
I, too, am on day 8 of 28 rads, so far no issues except I have a dry mouth. The rads techs say they are not radiating near that area (i am having supclav) but I'll ask the doc about it when I see her Wed. It's not too bad.
I found a cream online, a few have mentioned it, but not many. It is called MIADERM. It was developed by a team of rad docs. I ordered it online, and it is yummy. It absorbs right away and isn't greasy. I use it instead of aquaphor along with aloe vera. Although there is aloe vera in it.
As far as massage, I'm like Laura-- I do it because it can't hert and so why not? Nice to have found ya. May we all have an uneventful journey. JUDY

Hello ladies. I have a TE and also had radiation which ended in March. My skin did very well as far as burning during rads. I had lots of tightness and swelling. I am 3 months post rads and things seem to be getting worse instead of better. I am still very tight, especially under my arm and have now developed a cord. It starts in my armpit and goes down the back of my arm. It hurts so bad. I have been seeing a PT since January, but for every step forward they make, it seems I go 2 steps back. I shudder to think what shape I would be in without PT. Has anyone else had any cording problems?
As far as exchange....I lost my right expander due to infection and have just finished my course of antibiotics for that. I have to wait 2 months before they will replace the expander, so I am looking at a while before I can have exchange. The expander is killing me. I want it out so bad. I am almost to the point of having it removed and just saying forget reconstruction, but I know I will regret it. I am only 42 and really want to have some breasts. I am really trying to have a good attitude about all this, but the pain I am in is just wearing me down. I guess I just needed to vent to someone who would understand how I feel. I am so glad so many of you are doing well with the rads and expander and I hope you all continue to heal well.
My PT and PS both said to massage, massage, massage. It will help to keep the scar tissue from forming, so keep at it ladies.

((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((( SUSAN))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
I just wanted to give you a HUGE hug!
-
I am so sorry, SUSAN, that you have had to go through the removal of the implant. What a drag.
-
Hello all. I've been following all of your stories regularly because I will likely be starting radiation soon on my left side. I have had TEs expanded fully for one month now, and my path report for DCIS came back with very narrow margins. Just wondering how often you women have been seeing your plastic surgeons throughout radiation?
-
Thank you Estepp and Jess!
josirus I have been seeing my PS every 3 weeks since I started rads. They just wanted to do a skin check and make sure everything was o.k.
