Has anyone started a forum for Chemo in Dec 2008?

Good morning Divas. Sign me up too for the reunion and I'll even offer to push anyone in a wheel chair, I'll only be 50

Good for yoy simvog, putting your foot down and getting that port out of your body!
Busqueen congrats on the new job

Firni How did the port removal go? It was yesterday, right? The dent didn't stay very long, it's already gone. I'm suspecting it to be due to some mild swelling though.
-
My hair growth also seems to stop and start. I keep getting out the magnifying glass to look for eyelash regrowth, but so far nothing. It's hard not to monitor it daily, isn't it?
I've now got 3 fingernails taped on with first aid tape, and I think my two big toenails aren't far behind.
Mary, I've read that hair can be affected by Femara. I'm scared to death of the AI side effects. I think those put me more on edge than the chemo side effects because 5 years is such a long time and also because they just don't know how permanent the effects are. When I jump into the hormones forum and read that some women have needed surgery for their side effects, it makes me want to run screaming the other direction.
-
I'm up for a 16 year NED reunion. I'll be 69 but don't plan on being in a wheelchair!!
My port comes out today at noon. I'll get back on later and let you know how that went. I do know someone from the hospital called last night at 7:00 to remind me of my $500 co-pay. How nice of them. I did have to have a blood draw yesterday to see if the Tamoxifen will work for me so it was nice to still have the port for that. But I am ready for it to be gone.
-
Texas, I have stayed away from the hormone forums so I don't fill my head with SEs that I might not get. But hearing that surgery has been needed? What kind of surgery?? That is way to scary. I do know that a pretty good percentage of women don't do the whole 5 years of AIs because the SEs are too much to deal with.
-
Hello All I have not posted in a while. I hope everyone had a nice holiday. I have been feeling pretty well. Still very tired. I don't know if it is the Tamoxifen or not. Since I was on CMF I didn't loose my hair like most of you. It just thinned out a lot. But my last chemo was in Feb. and lately I seem to find more of my hair everywhere. I have only noticed these SE's from the Tamoxifen my hair, still tired and sometimes I feel achy like my joints in my arms and legs hurt. I will see the BS on the 29th. It will have been 6 mths. since my surgery. Sometimes I can't believe that it was already 6 mths. You can definitely count me in for the reunion. I will be 63 and my daughter will be 29 and son 27. That seems very scary!!!! It seems that everyone is doing pretty well and keeping very busy. Have a great weekend. The weather in NY is suppose to be like Spring!!!! Yea!!!!!

Firni, I've read about women who have needed tendon surgery as well as surgery for other joint-related problems. Also, looking at the studies on AIs, about 1/3 of women taking them develop some sort of joint pain or full-blown arthritis.
I'm now trying to find out what they 'controlled' for in these studies -- what were the profiles of the women involved other than the fact that they had ER+ breast cancer and were post-menopausal?

OK, I'm just plain angry right now! My MIL called this morning, her good friend celebrate her 5 y. anniversary of being cancer free last month. Well, she went in for some testing, they found 3 large tumors and they're 99% positive of it being uterine & ovarian cancer
She'll get the results later today. They're thinking chemo before surgery
I'm just plain mad & angry at cancer right now. And my port MIL has had a rough time dealing with cancer with me for the past 6 months, now that I'm finally reaching the end of my journey, she has to start it all over again with her friend
Cancer sucks! -
Yikes Caroline! That's rough news.
-
Caroline, that is terrible news. Cancer does suck and it seems if it isn't us, it's someone else we know. Do you know if your MIL's friend has been taking Tamoxifen or some AI for the past 5 years? It seems that reproductive organ cancer is a SE of those lovely drugs.
-
Caroline - that is really crappy news. I'm so sorry for your friend and for your mom. It's just crazy how many women I've met through this journey who are battling or have survived BC. It's everywhere I go. The grocery store, the mall, even at my "Curves" I meet someone new almost every time I go who has been through it. I pray for a cure for this nasty disease! God bless of all of us!
Firni, please give us a report on your port removal. Mine is coming out tomorrow!
Love, Elaine
-
Good to hear from you Busqueen. Keep in touch!
Good luck Firni & Elaine on your port removals! I can't wait to get mine out.
Caroline - I am so sorry for you, your MIL and her friend! Cancer seems to hit us from every angle! My prayers go out to you!
Elaine - how are your rads going? Are you somewhat close to being finished? I can't remember when you started.
Speaking of hair, my eyelashes are crazy! I have about 1/2 of my eyelashes. What is weird is they are gone on the inner eye but the outer lashes are still there. I feel so ugly. Gained 20 lbs during chemo, bald, no boobs and now the eyelashes. Oh well in time all of this will change.
As far as the NEDs reunion in 16 years, I can help push too! I'll only be 58.
Have a great day ladies!
Sonia
-
Hey Ladies
Just popping in to check on everybody! Sorry to hear about all the residual side effects kicking in!
Caroline I'm sorry to hear about your MIL's friend.
My hair is continuing to grow. My fingernails seem to be haning on there. They don't hurt any more. You can see the bubble underneath, but I talked to another survivor and she said hers did the same thing...but never fell off...just grew out. My eyelashes and brows are coming in really good now...but I give them "fertilizer" to help! LOL
I started my seven day detox yesterday and in one day finally kicked two pounds! I've had this stubborn 5 pounds hanging on since chemo...no matter how much I work out or how clean I eat. I just think I needed the detox! Six more days to go!
I'll be 45 next month...so in 16 years I'll be 61! I'll come to the reunion and teach Zumba Gold! LOL
Make it a great day ladies!
-
Zumba Gold! LOL! That should be a sight

Thanks Divas, still waiting to hear the final results. No idea about tamox or AI.
-
Lisa, what day is your birthday? I'll also be 45 on May 12th.
Sonia, I hear you girl on the eye lashes! I have only a few left and they are so silly looking. I still put mascara on the top ones too. lol My eyebrows look like something on a comic character! Oh well, can't complain too much. We're alive! I am almost halfway thru rads now. Today will be #14 out of 33. It's not too bad so far. No redness or fatique yet.
-
Zumba Gold what a hoot! I need that now! I don't have to wait the 16 yrs!
Good to hear that you are half way through rads and you doing ok.
I tried to curl the lashes I have remaining before I put on my mascarra but the just stick straight out. The hair on my head started doing squirley things right before it fell out. I'm praying these stubs stay intact. I know I look like a 8 yr old who got into mom's makeup but it's better than me going a la natural!

-
Elaine....I'm one day behind you! May 13! So you are another Taurus the bull!!!!!!!!
Swest, I can find you a Zumba gold class if you want! ROFL
-
Lisa, we will be celebrating at the same time! My bday is the 12th and my last rad is the 13th. I might have a glass of wine that week! woohoo!

-
Can Zumba Gold be done from a chair?
I'm back from getting my port out. It was a breeze. I signed the consent at 12:10 and got dressed at 12:20. The only thing that was a little ouchy was getting the local. But even that wasn't as bad as some of the stuff I've had done to me. So don't be nervous. It really was a quick piece of cake.
-
Lisa, Elaine and I will be celebrating birthdays for 3 days in a row next month. I'll be 62 on May 11th, so someone will need to push me in that wheelchair at the reunion because I'll be OLD! Zumba Gold from the chair should be just about perfect for me!
Caroline -- I'm so sorry about your MIL's friend. Cancer really does suck!
I am just getting over the worst case of food poisoning -- got REALLY sick Sunday night, spent Monday evening in the ER getting fluids and Zofran and am still not able to eat more than dry toast and plain noodles. At least I'm on the upside, but haven't even had time to enjoy my new foob because I've felt crummy all but a couple of days since the surgery. Rads simulation is in a week with rads starting the 27th. No nail problems so far, lashes and brows are pitifully thin and hair on my head is filling in and starting to grow a little.
Do any of you have discomfort in your "bad" arm? Mine hurts where it bends at the elbow and wrist and the top of my hand swells a little at times -- I expect it has something to do with the lack of nodes on that side.
~Bonnie
-
Bonnie - Yuck! So sorry to hear about your food poisening. It is fair that you had to go through that on top of everything else. I have discomfort off and on in my bad arm. I've become used to it. I hate it though!
Firni - I'm glad to hear it was easy. I'm not nervous, just anxious to get it out!!!
-
Bonnie, Food poisoning is the worst. I'm sorry you haven't been able to enjoy the results of your exchange surgery but I'm glad you're on the upswing.
I've had swelling in my node side hand since the beginning of Dec. Onc is sure it's from chemo and I'm not so sure. I think it's lymphedema. He said if it's still swollen a month out from chemo he'd send me to a therapist. I don't have any pain in my hand or wrist, but my fingertips are painful with pressure. I do still have edema from chemo in my feet and ankles so I'll wait till that is gone before I go back to onc for a referral.
-
Lisa - I need the Zumba Gold! After chemo I feel so old! I tried to find classes in my area but they only offer them close to me once a week. I figure that would not be enough exercise to make a difference. I think I'll look for a CD on line. Can you suggest any good ones for beginners?
Firni - I love it "be done from a chair"! That is right up my alley!!!! I am glad the port removal was uneventful!
Poor Bonnie! Barfing is bad!!!!! I am so sorry! I hope you get to feel better.
Good luck to morrow Elaine!
-
Hey ladies...we actually do teach Zumba gold for people in chairs!!!! I'm serious.
Swest...you can find our basic four set DVDs on Ebay...that is how I got started!
Bonnie...sorry about the food poisoning! Keep an eye on your arm! When mine started feeling that way I ended up with lymphangitis. Gently massage your arm, moving toward your heart...that will help! Gentle stretching will help as well! But if it gets worse or turns red...see the doctor!
Sounds like May is going to be birthday month!
I worked my Zumba class really good tonight...I had even more energy than usual. Started my 7 day detox yesterday and it is working! I had five pounds still hanging on from chemo and all the steroids, meds. After one day of the detox...I lost 3 pounds!!!!
Okay, my bed is calling my name! Hugs to all!
Make it a great Friday!
-
Lisa - what detox are you using?? Also, I am shaving my head again because the initial experiment with growth is at a standstill and looks sillier than the bald. Anyone else doing the same??
-
Bobcat, remind me again how far out you are from your last treatment? I kept shaving mine for about a month after my last treatment and then finally decided to let it grow in. Seems to be doing fine...you can't really see it on my photo. It is coming in faster now. For a while it seemed like it was "stuck", but it is growing!
I'll pm you about the detox.
The sun is shining today...it's going to be a fabulous day!!!!!!!!!!! Hugs to all!
-
Good morning ladies. I noticed a foul smell on my hands this morning. Peeked under the tape holding one of my fingernails in place (thank you Taxotere) and saw that it's oozing smelly liquid. A friend who was on Taxol had this happen so at least I'm just sighing and going on with my day. It will probably spread to the rest of my fingernails over time.
-
Oh no Texas! That sounds awful! Is it infected? What can you do for them? I am so sorry!
Thanks Lisa, I will check into these DVDs.
Firni - I heard on the news this morning you are getting pounded with snow. Are you all right? Isn't it spring time???????

Bobbi - It took my hair a good 6 weeks after chemo to see any significant growth. It is still really short but I'm getting a lot of coverage now. I need to trim the white hairs that did not fall out during chemo. They are getting scraggly looking.
-
Yes, nail bed infection. Doc prescribed antibiotics, and soaking in hydrogen peroxide.
-
Hi swest. Yes it is spring. And snow is what it does during the spring in CO. March and April are our snowiest months. So far where I am in north Denver, we have about an inch of slush. But it's still 33 degrees. As it gets colder today, more snow will stick until we have 10-22 inches by tomorrow night. At least it melts fast. By Tues. it should be in the 70s again. I did get the grocery shopping done so now we're ready to stay in and enjoy the snow.
Texas, Yuk. I can't believe what a hard time you're having. When will it stop?? What more could go wrong? Didn't the Dr. want to take that nail off? I sure hope the antibiotic keeps the infection from spreading to the rest of your nails.
-
Firni -- Glad you are all settled in to wait out the spring snow there in Colorado!
Texas -- That nailbed infection sounds painful and yucky -- hope the antibiotics and hydrogen peroxide soaks do the trick and it doesn't spread to other nails.
We're having some decent weather here in Oregon this week and sunshine is in the forecast for a few more days. I've been at home, sick, all week so the weather is about the most exciting thing I've seen! This morning I am nearly certain that I have thrush, so have a call in to my doctor. There seems to be no end to these annoying medical issues that keep popping up.
Have a great day everyone!
~Bonnie
