Donsuzbee, I see Dr. Galleshaw in Atlanta.  She is with Georgia Cancer Specialists - is that the same as Georgia Cancer Treatment Center?  Dr. Galleshaw is a breast cancer specialist and I absolutely love her!

I hope all of you are doing well.  If anyone is up for a gathering so that we can meet, I'd love to.

Duh! I go to Georgia Cancer Specialists. I don't think there is a Georgia Cancer Treatment Center. Guess I'm getting old!!!! I would love to get together with any of you. I am about 1 to 1.5 hours south of Chattanooga, but I could just get a motel couldn't I. And have a get "away."

Not sure where Murphy, NC is.

    God bless all of you!!!!

Susan, As my niece said Murphy is as far west in NC as you can go it is less than 5 miles from Tenn, and GA. Lori and her taught at the same school in Murphy. I went out with her when she got the job and we were actually about 2 miles from TN. I would love to come and see you but where I am at is about 4-5 hours from you.

hollyann,  I see Dr. Galleshaw at the Johnson Ferry office.  I feel so blessed to have found her.  She is great!!

OK, I'm up for a gathering.  Is Atlanta (say, the north side) a good place for everyone to get together?  If so, I'll start looking for a place and we can post it.  Atlanta might be a good meeting place for all of the Georgia ladies and would also be fairly close to Western NC and Eastern TN.  Let me know what you think!!!

North side of Atlanta would be ok with me. But I wondered about trying to meet in Chatanooga or somewhere on the north/western side of GA to include Lori from NC.

May I share with you ladies that I sure wish there was as great a support group for Chronic Kidney Disease as this site for breast cancer. I had a kidney removed July 07, renal clear cell carcinoma - not a bc met. I have groped my way through but most support groups are for dialysis patients or transplant patients.

    God bless!

Thanks Susan!  I'm good with somewhere north of Atlanta (maybe Canton, Woodstock or Ellijay?)  Atlanta is a bit far for me right now.

Alpharetta is a nice, central location north of Atlanta.  For those of us further north, we could carpool to the gathering.  I'd be willing to drive.  If those in NC would drive to Blairsville, we could meet there.

How about May 23??  Far enough in advance for everyone to plan.  There are some great restaurants at Northpoint.

Hollyann, do you have any ideas, since you live there?

    Hi Ladies,

Will you make an exception and let a homesick Canton, NC lady into your fold?  I live in Luray,VA now, close to my sister and am having treatment here but I miss  the mountains so much and don't know anyone here.

    Hey Nancy,

So you're from Canton?  I live in Canton, between the Bethel and Cruso communities!  Nice to meet you!  Small world, isn't it?  SmileSmile

    Hey Mary Jo,

I'm originally from the Fruitland/Edneyville area of Hendersonville but lived in Clyde and Cruso for 12 years.  My daughter went to Bethel and my son graduated from Pisgah.  It is a small world!

Nice to meet you too.  Hope you have a nice Easter.  I'm scheduled for a mastectomy Monday so I'll probably be out of commission for a few days after that but will post when I can.

Oh gee, Nancy-- my mom was born and raised in Fruitland/Edneyville!  Her maiden name was Jackson and two of her sisters married into the Hyder and Ward clans.  My daughter and son also went to Bethel and are both Pisgah grads, '98 and 2000, respectively.

I hope you have a nice and Blessed Easter too and I wish you the very best for your mastectomy.  When you feel up to it, hopefully we can "chat" some more!

    Take care, neighbor!

Wow bluewillow!!!!   The world just got smaller!  Do you remember the little pink house across from the only store in Fruitland?  That was my grandparents house.  I graduated from Edneyville (as did dad) in '72'.  There was a Hyder and Ward in my class.  My son graduated in '98'.  He played football for Canton and then Pisgah.  I bet our kids know each other!  Incredible!  I feel as though I've found a long lost friend.

Thank you for your Easter blessing and your best wishes on my mastectomy.  How are you doing?  Are you still on this rocky road?  What's up with the paper mill? Is it still going?  I better stop the interrogation!  I am just so excited to have met you.  As you can see, I would love to chat.

    Until then,

    Nancy

    Welcome Nancy,

I live in Otto (just south of Franklin) and drive to Asheville twice a month to visit my parents.  I usually go the back way through Cylde & Canton.  Yes - the paper mill is still operating.  They are tearing down the Enka Plant in Candler - sad, but they are recycling everything that they can.

I have an Uncle that lives in Quincy, VA, is that anywhere near Luray?

I'll be thinking about you on Monday - sending hugs and well-wishes! Please let us know how you're doing.

    Thanks Wink,

Glad to know Champion is still there.  I was afraid Canton would become a ghost town if it ever closed.  I've been to Franklin, not sure about Otto but it's beautiful country down that way.  I worked for a legal firm in Asheville years ago.  When I was a kid, the big deal was to go to the Asheville Christmas parade.  Sorry to hear about the Enka Plant.  They will probably shove a Lowe's in there.

I tried looking on a map of VA to find out if I'm close to Quincy but I'm too stupid to know how to do it.  I need my daughter's help but she's in Highpoint.  The closest city to Luray is Harrisonburg.  Luray is a small town.  It's where the Caverns are.  I go to Harrisonburg for treatment where they have a cancer center.

Many thanks for the hugs and well-wishes.  I'll keep in touch.

Hey Nancy!  This is amazing!  I can't wait to tell my mom tonight about your grandparents-- she is 81 but she remembers everything, especially about when she was growing up there.  And I would almost bet money that my kids know your son-- if you want to tell me his name (PM me if you feel better about it), I'll ask them tonight when we have our Easter dinner (one day early).  My daughter and her family live in Statesville now, but my son and his wife live right next door to my parents.  My dad retired from Champion in Canton, and my kids' dad still works at "Little Champion" in Waynesville.  Like Wink said, it is still going, but they sure had some rough times for a while.  Actually it is called Evergreen Papers now, was Sunburst Papers, and hopefully they will keep running, because poor little Canton would fold without it for sure.  It was sad to see the big smokestacks fall at Enka too (or "Stinka" as we used to call it).  And oh, I work at our school bus garage and we go to High Point to pick up new buses!  I am done with all my treatments and doing very well-- have plenty of hair and feel absolutely great, but trying to lose the flab I gained during chemo-- hard to do at age 52 Embarassed  We look forward to hearing from you after your surgery-- lots of prayers are going up for you!

Hey there Wink!  I hope you're doing well and feeling good!  We've probably passed each other in Clyde and Canton at some point in time!  I still remember the delightful story you told me about your family and I hope all is going well for everyone!  I bet things are really blooming and pretty out your way.  Did you all get any bad storms last night?  We escaped the bad stuff, but had a lot of scary lightning and heavy rains, but strangely, almost no wind.

I am happy to know both of you and let's chat lots more soon, ok?  Take care!

    Hugs from Mary Jo

    Hey Mary Jo,

Have a wonderful time with your family tonight!  Our kids have to know each other.  I am anxious to hear what your mom has to say.  Will you get to see your daughter over the Easter holiday?  Your grandson is adorable.  Is he your son's son?  I am a long distance granny and that's hard.  He is from my oldest son.

Glad to know you are done with treatments and are doing well.  I have already cut all of my hair really short so it won't be such a shock when I lose it.  I am worried about adding to the flab I already have but I guess I'll deal with that when the time comes.  I know what you mean about it being hard to lose.  I'm 55 and I know I'll never see " little" days again.  It seems as though everything I own are my "fat" clothes.

Champion sure keeps changing it's name but as long as it keeps going is the main thing.  Too many livelihoods at stake.  I didn't work there but knew so many that did.  It is sad about Enka, not only because of the loss of jobs but the history.  My brother works at what used to be Rockwell and they are closing and moving to Mexico.  He's already lost half of his retirement and his 401k.

Thank you for your prayers.  I'm not quite as nervous now.  Have too many things to do before surgery to keep me busy, which is good.  I do look forward to hearing from you!

Hey Wink!  If you are traveling to see your parents this weekend do be careful in the traffic.  The last time I was in Asheville, it was  as though there were thousands of more cars on the road.  I hope you are doing well and will be thinking of you.

Best wishes to both of you!

    Nancy

Hi...I just found this discussion. I've been living in Hendersonville, NC (1/2 hr outside Asheville)  for a year, having moved here from NJ to care for my 85 yr old mother. It's been a real adjustment, as I was 30 mi from Philadelphia before, and there were lots of BC events, conventions, get-togethers, etc in that very populated, and very well medically served area. I don't know my way around much at all yet, but I'm up for a get-together if not to far.
