CoQ10 - who takes it & how much

Options

Just curious who takes this and how much daily?     I also have read that if you take c0Q10 in the ubiquinol form that is a stablized reduce form making it more effective.     Just curious on what any of you Q10 users do.   FloridaLady I am counting on some input from you ;)

Thanks

Jennifer

I started taking it in january this year and went through a bottle of 30mg capsules.  The bottle I have now is 100 mg.  I started out with one per day.  Now I take two.  ...still waiting for that burst of well being that others have reported.  Mainly, I want to get my blood pressure down a bit.  I dusted off my bp kit to take readings at home.  I'm not very good at it, but good enough to know that my top number is way too high.

For those who got bp readings to drop with coQ10, how long did it take for those results to appear?  I haven't done a reading since I started at the 200mg/day, which has been at least a week, probably more.

    Althea,

I started with one 100 mg per day for a month then moved up to the 200 mg daily....I saw bp results lowering within a week or two so it is rather rapid, or at least it was for me.

I am now taking 1/2 the bp meds that I was and hoping that going up to the 200 mg daily will take out the other 1/2.

    Best wishes

    Jule

I get the brand WAlmart sells....i do notice increased energy, and lower BP, and less headaches....coQ10 has many advantages.

Gee after reading all these comments about 200mg. a day I guess I had better up my amount. Tomorrow I'll take one 100mg in the morning, and 100mg in the evening. Sure can't hurt and maybe it will help.

It is supposed to help kill cancer, and is good for your BP.  I took a lot of it for about a year and then found out I have cancer, My radiation onc. told me I could not take it during radiation as it is an anti-oxidizer.  He explained that radiation oxidizes everything so I shouldn't fight it with Q-10.  What does everyone think about that?   I thought it oxidized your cells.   Tami

My onc AND rad onc said NO antioxidants in pill form during rads.

I was also surprised he told me no vitamin C, and no Fish oil.  I feel like I am giving up good things in my life and doing something (radiation) that is bad for me.  Tami

I take it, even though it is a bit expensive with my other supplements.

Question:  I had been taking it as a pill to swallow.  I just purchased some at a great price at a pharmacy, but the bottle says "chewable".  Do you think it makes any difference?  I would much rather swallow them and be done with it.

    I wonder.....my rad onc OK"d CoQ10 during rads....but I chickened out and didn't take it....

Idaho, you say you took it before diagnosis....how long and what dose were you taking....I have researched and from the things I have read CoQ10 brings oxygen to the mitochondria of the cell....I don't know about radiation bringing oxygen to the cell...I need to research that one...

    It is food for thought.

Lisa, when did you start with the 200mg twice daily? did you read about Dr. Folkers studies with breast cancer too?

Amber I have the book Waking the Warrior Goddess, Harnassing the Power of Nasture & Natural Medicines to Achieve Extraordinary Health, by Dr. Christine Horner.  I started taking the 200 mg twice a day after I was finished with chemo and my implant surgery...so just recently.

She talks about the studies from Denmark (1994) regarding the 390 mg of CoQ10.  From her book:

"In a study from Denmark published in 1994, thrity-two patients with highrisk breast cancer were treated with antioxidants (vitamins C and E, selenium, and beta-carotene), essential fatty acids (gamma linolenic acid and omega-3 fatty acids), and 90 milligrams of CoQ10.  The breast tumors shrank in six of the thirty-two aptients.

The researchers wondered what would happen if they increased the dose of CoQ10.  So, they decided to raise the daily does of CoQ10 to 390 mg in just one of the six patients.  They got a big, pleasant surprise.  In one month, the tumor in this patient had become so small that it could no longer be felt.  In another month, a ammaogram showed that the tumor had completely disappeared.

With these startling results, the researchers wanted to see if these higher doses of CoQ10 would shrink tumors in other breast cancer patients.  They selected a woman with breast cancer, gave her 300 mg of CoQ10 a day, and waited with great anticipation.  In just a few months, her tumor disappeared.  In the eighteen months that the patients in this study were treated with CoQ10, none of them died or showed further signs of metastases.  The number of women who had been expected to die, as predicted by the state of their tumors, was four.

Encouraged by these results, the researchers continued their study of CoQ10 in breast cancer patients and published a report the following year.  They gave all their breast cancer patients 390 mg of CoQ10 each day.  One patient was a forty-four year old woman with numerous metastases of her breast cancer to her liver.  After a few months of taking CoQ10, all the metastatic tumors disappeared!  After six months of taking CoQ10, another breast cancer patient, who had had a metastatic tumor to the lining of her lung before taking the CoQ10, had no signs of the tumor left.  More research is needed to determine the effectiveness of CoQ10 in stopping the growth of breast cancer, but the results of these studies look very promising. "

As far as what kind to take...it is like any supplement...be sure you know what you are getting!  Dr Horner says:

"CoQ10 is fat soluble.  In other words, it's more easily absorbed when it's in fat.  When CoQ10 is taken in a soy-oil suspension contained in a soft-shell capsule, it is more readily absorbed that if it's taken in a dry tablet or capsule.  That means you need a higher dose of the dry form of CoQ10 than you do of the oil suspension to attain the same level of it in your body.  If your goal is to lower your fisk of breast cancer, 30-100 mg of CoQ10 a day is recommended.  If you already have breast cancer, you'll need to take more.

Case studies from Denmark showed that breast tumors shrank in women given 300-390 mg of CoQ10 a day.  Most CoQ10 is synthetically made.  But a few companies produce a naturally fermented from of CoQ10 made from whole foods that studies show your body absorbs and uses much more efficiently.  A studey from the University of Scranton found that fermented CoQ10 had twenty times more antioxidant activity than the standard synthetic preparations of CoQ10 and that only 22 mg of the fermented CoQ10 they tested was equivalent to 400 mg of synthetically made CoQ10."

Dr. Horner says, "Be sure to tell your doctor that you are planning to take this supplement.  Let him or her help you determine how much to take.  Also, because supplemental CoQ10 improves heart health, a person who takes heart medication may need his or her dosage adjusted while taking this supplement."

Hope this helps...sorry if there are any typos!

So now you are wondering where you find the fermented CoQ10, right!  This is what I found out!

"The Coenzyme Q10 that is found in consumer supplements and functional foods & beverages today is derived either from yeast, bacteria or tobacco.

KanekaQ10TM is the only yeast-fermented CoQ10 available on the market today.

The yeast fermentation method, developed by the Kaneka Corporation 30 years ago, produces CoQ10 that is identical to that produced naturally within the body.  This bio-identical form of CoQ10 lacks the impurities found in synthetic or bacterial fermented CoQ10.

Synthetically produced CoQ10, chemically processed from tobacco, produces a by-product known as the "cis isomer" which is not present in nature.

The significant safety, toxicity and efficacy studies on CoQ10 to date have been conducted mostly on Kaneka's yeast-fermented CoQ10.  Very little testing, if any, has been found on CoQ10 derived from either bacteria or tobacco."

"KanekaQ10TM, the only CoQ10 manufactured in the U.S., is the world's purest, most thoroughly researched CoQ10 ingredient available today.

Fermented from yeast, KanekaQ10TM is bio-identical to the CoQ10 produced within the body.  All other CoQ10 products are processed from bacteria or tobacco derivatives.

Kaneka's uncompromising commitment to its quality over the past 30 years has made KanekaQ10TM the industry standard in CoQ10.  Here's why:

    • KanekaQ10TM is the only yeast-fermented CoQ10 and thus does not contain the impurities that synthetically processed CoQ10 does
    • KanekaQ10TM has been used in the vast majority of all clinical trials over the past 30 years
    • KanekaQ10TM is the CoQ10 with Self-Affirmed GRAS status ("generally recognized as safe") for use in foods and beverages
    • KanekaQ10TM is the only CoQ10 made in the U.S. and is manufactured per the good manufacturing practices designated by the FDA
    • KanekaQ10TM is Genetically Modified Organism-free, allergen-free and Kosher certified

    Dietary Supplements
While there are many brands of CoQ10 supplements on the market today, not all CoQ10 is created equally.  To ensure you are taking the purist, highest quality CoQ10 available, look for the KanekaQ10TM logo on the label of your CoQ10 supplement, or buy one of these top quality brands that formulate their CoQ10 products with KanekaQ10TM:

Bluebonnet, Nutri-Supreme, EIT, Puritan's Pride, Healthy Origins, Tishcon, Jarrow Formulas, Vitamin World, Life Extension

And no I'm not affiliated with this...just the information I found!

wow!, I just bought another month supply today the spring valley brand....but I will look into the brands you mentioned Lisa.I am with you on the self education. I read the same studies you mentioned and that is why I am on the 400mg....but I have always wondered about the brands...went on consumer reports and Spring Valley is listed as accurate for listing what is said on the bottle....but it apalls me that most brands get their product from tobacco.

i will definetely check into this....

I SECOND..........."SELF-EDUCATION AS THE KEY TO ANYTHING"

    to a great day!

That is incredible information about the tumor shrinkage.  I hope that means the coQ10 is also helpful in preventing recurrences also.

I just came across an article about a study on coQ10 as it relates to huntington's disease.  I know I've also read information about it being helpful for parkinsons disease, which my sister in law's mother has.

In my community, my local Vitamin Shoppe is where I'm able to find what I need for supplements.  They have the Jarrow's brand of coQ10.  What I take now is powdered in a capsule.  I'm tempted to go get some softgels this week even though I have about 2 more weeks of other powedered.
