Pickled Foods
I read something on this recently looking at another kind of can for some else and thought I would post the info.

How It Works
These medications balance certain brain chemicals called neurotransmitters by reducing the amount of monoamine oxidase, the substance that breaks down the neurotransmitters. When these brain chemicals are in proper balance, the symptoms of depression are relieved.
Why It Is Used
Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) are usually given to people with depression who:
- Did not get better with other antidepressants.
- Cannot tolerate the side effects of other antidepressants.
- Have a family or personal history of successful treatment with MAOIs.
- Have unusual depression symptoms.
MAOIs usually are not the first medications given for depression because they have serious side effects when combined with certain foods and/or medications.
MAOIs are not recommended for children or teens.
How Well It Works
Current research suggests that monoamine oxidase inhibitors may be as effective as other antidepressants (such as tricyclics) in treating severe depression but may be more effective than other antidepressants in those who have depression with uncommon symptoms such as sleeping and eating too much and being overly sensitive to rejection.1
Side Effects
Side effects of monoamine oxidase inhibitors include:
- Difficulty getting to sleep.
- Dizziness, lightheadedness, and fainting.
- Dry mouth.
- Blurred vision.
- Appetite changes.
- High blood pressure.
- Changes in heart rate and rhythm.
- Muscle twitching and feelings of restlessness.
- Loss of sexual desire or ability.
- Weight gain.
- Negative interactions with other medications and some foods.
FDA Advisory. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued an advisory on antidepressant medicines and the risk of suicide. The FDA does not recommend that people stop using these medicines. Instead, a person taking antidepressants should be watched for warning signs of suicide. This is especially important at the beginning of treatment or when the doses are changed.
Please see our drug encyclopedia for a full list of side effects.
What To Think About
You must avoid eating certain foods, such as some cheeses, broad beans like fava beans, pickled foods like sauerkraut, beer, and red wine, while taking MAOIs. Eating these foods can cause severe high blood pressure.
You must avoid some nonprescription medications, particularly certain cold remedies and diet pills.
You must wait at least 14 days after you stop taking MAOIs before taking another antidepressant.
MAOIs can cause death if they are combined with certain foods or taken with certain other medications.
Talk with your health professional about diet and medication restrictions you need to follow if you are planning to take an MAOI.

Half the world's stomach cancer victims in China 06 Dec 2006 02:59:11 GMT<!-- 06 Dec 2006 02:59:11 GMT ## for search indexer, do not remove--> Source: Reuters Printable view | Email this article | RSS

BEIJING, Dec 6 (Reuters) - About half the people who die every year from stomach cancer are in China and the main culprit is the nation's enthusiasm for pickled and smoked food and cigarettes, the official Xinhua news agency said. The disease kills about 300,000 people in China a year and there are 400,000 new cases reported annually, Xinhua said in a report late on Tuesday. Only lung and liver cancer kill more people in China, it quoted Jin Maolin, a doctor at Peking University, as saying. Though men aged over 50 are most at risk, the number of women in rural areas who have contracted stomach cancer has risen 25 percent in the past five years, Jin said. Chinese people need to eat more fresh fruit and vegetables and cut down on salted and pickled food -- very popular in China -- as well as smoking and drinking to reduce the risks, he added. The World Health Organisation and Chinese Health Ministry warned earlier this year that a surge in chronic diseases such as cancer and diabetes due to changing lifestyles could kill up to 80 million people in China in the next decade. Chinese urban residents today eat double the amount of meat they did 20 years ago and both men and woman were smoking at an earlier age, the health ministry said. The WHO wants developing countries, where most such deaths occur, to copy Western nations by discouraging tobacco use and curbing salt, sugar and saturated fats in food. They could have their work cut out for them in China, home to the world's most enthusiastic smokers who smoke about two trillion cigarettes a year, according to the Chinese government. -
Stomach Cancer Also called: Gastric cancer
Stomach cancer mostly affects older people - two-thirds of people who have it are over age 65. Your risk of getting it is also higher if you
- Have had a Helicobacter pylori infection
- Have had stomach inflammation
- Are a man
- Eat lots of salted, smoked, or pickled foods
- Smoke cigarettes
- Have a family history of stomach cancer
-
Again I'm sure in moderation these foods are find. I was surprised about the antidepression drug interaction.
