March 2009 Rads Group?

Hey Caren, I was wondering how tired you got during rads? I'm finishing week 2 and I feel a little tired in the evening, I don't know if it's the rads, leftover from chemo or my new exercise routine, or a combo of them all! All I know is that it was hard to get up for work this am!
Have a great weekend

Torch, it must be nice to at least begin a countdown. I guess I'm the poster girl for insurance procrastination and mismanagement. At least I've calmed down now and insurance called this morning to say the nurse is reviewing the "expedited appeal" we submitted with IMRT support documents - letter from my doctor, articles of substantiation and evidence, etc. UCSF along with UPMC and other major cancer centers have been doing this therapy for 5-7 years. I've decided that whatever the decision is I'm not going to fight it. I just want my treatments to start. (((I do not know why the insurance called to interrupt my regular conformal rad therapy scheduled to begin two days ago after i already accepted their first denial!! I can't let the stress take hold of me.))) Please see radiotherapy intro at UPM's web site at http://www.upmcwhitfieldcancercentre.ie/Oncology.htm, where IMRT is described as state of the art. btw, i am just a bc patient - caught in the middle of the doctors and the insurance company -who just wants her treatment.... not matter what it is....
Nice to hear everyone else is able to get along.

My pulmonologist says my lung function is 60%. He wants me to wait a couple weeks for rads. Monday's chest xray will be the deciding factor, I guess. Is it my place to warn my radiologist of the pulmonologist's possible interference?
-
Juli and Mamie, I'm sorry that both of you are experiencing delays (or possible delays). Juli, unless your pulmonologist and radiologist are connected (e.g. in the same medical group) it would probably be wise to let the radiologist know.
I'm done with week 1, tx 3. 27 more to go (I don't know if some of them are boosts - the rad onc just said 30 treatments). So far there isn't much of a visual change. When I saw the rad onc after tx 2, he said there was some pinkness from the treatment but the two sides look pretty much the same to me.
I get tired in the afternoon a couple of hours after treatment. I haven't figured out if that is an effect of rads, just normal mid-afternoon drowsiness or my imagination.

hi Cinda,
Interestingly enough, I did fairly well during rads, but I am now very tired since I finished on Monday. Infact, I stopped at my med onc today for bloodwork since I have redeveloped mouth thrush (had all through chemo) and I have been so tired. Of course I have been trying to claim my house back from nine months of minimal housework and I went to help my sister for three days this week following her getting a stent. She is about two and half hours away, but I stayed two nights. The good news is my blood work was great so even though I have the annoying thrush, there is nothing major going on. So after all that, to answer your question, I have been a little tired after finishing 35 rads. MId afternoon is the tough time for me too, and if I plop down to watch tv, I usually end up napping, but..................if I am out doing something fun, I am just fine. I am glad to hear you are exercising and actually that should give you more energy in the long run. I kept up my walking during rads which was usually 3,5 five days a week. I have now upped it to 4.5 trying to jump start some weight loss before I start the AI's which I hear make you gain weight. I already need to lose 25 so I better get a handle on this. My last bit of advice is listen to your body. If you are tired, rest. But if you have the energy, then just continue exercising, etc. Enjoy the weekend break and feel good.

NancySchoen: Thanks! I do twitch too! Tech said it was the position of my arms, jumping muscles have since stopped as have the twinges of pain with the 3rd treatment. I know what you mean tho about the joking with the techs, it makes this whole process an easier road to walk! My rad room has music playing, love that, helps to relax me, plus love, love, love music anyway!
Have you experienced any fatigue yet and when did you start getting red skin, just with the 19th?
Also, does anyone have seroma's, I aquired one by my axilla, had another CT and doc said it is a seroma.
-
Torchsong! Thanks for asking! I am doing good. Just had some stomach issues this week that were not related to the rad. I am probably going to be staying there at least 2 nights a week to keep from driving so much. HOW ARE YOU?
cinda! I just got on to ask a question about Nioxin & saw your post. Glad it worked for you. I will give it a try.
-
Susie.... I actully started feeling fatigued after two weeks but part may have been due to the amount of stress I was under and still not fully recovered from the surgeries. As I had cellulitis and an infection in the first surgery which really wore me down.
Today was #19 and I took a nap this afternoon of 2 1/2 hours with no problem as I could not function any more. As far as redness it just started to bother me yesterday and I put on the cream that the doctor gave me. Tonight I feel like I have a very bad sun burn. My skin feels hot, dry and itchy so I have put on the cream about three time today. I am glad it is the weekend and I have a break.
Is seroma fluid by the incision? Because I had to have my first incision drained two times once there were 70 cc and the second time only 35. Then on the second surgery which was the node surgery that had to be drained once also of about 30 cc. I sure felt better after they drained them.
Hope you have a good weekend. Nancy

Well, week one is behind me. I'm feeling a little itchy (on my side under my arm) but I'm not usre if that's the rads or the label on my new bra! lol I'll cut the label out and see what happens.
Almost had a meltdown yesterday, and started by the stupidest thing... I lost a dental crown (well, it came out, I still have it). Just chewing gum, driving along, and suddenly there was something hard in my mouth... Anyway, it really upset me. As if I don't have enough expenses, here's another (I have no idea what the dentist's fee is for putting it back), and as if I don't look attractive enough, now i have a gap in my smile (it's one of my front teeth--not the very front ones, but the next one over). It just fel tlike the last straw!
I'm hoping to get it put back in today as I have to preach tomorrow!
But the rads...? Just fine, thanks!

15 down, 18 to go. If all goes well I finish on Tax day. I have been real tired through all this, not sure if it is the rads or just getting up a little earlier to make it to my appt and then back to work. I have to take all three children with me, because one road to my development is closed and the other road takes me out a too close to the interstate to back track. Starting on Monday the road from daycare to the school where I work will be closed, so I will have to drop my 4 year old off at daycare, back track to the other road that leads to the school. Just more of an inconvenience as if rads is not enough. Oh well this too shall pass. Enough venting for now.
Good luck to all and enjoy your first weekend of Spring!!!!!!
-
Martha, sorry to hear about the tooth problem! I know about those little things throwing you over the edge. My teeth really took a beating through chemo, and rotted something awful. I'm due for some major dental work, and I know I can't afford it.
Mfgibby, I'll be celebrating with you on the same day -- Tax day! That will be my last treatment, too. It must be a pain to have to put up with the roads, etc. It's bad enough that this is soooooo daily!!! But yes, it will pass soon enough!
I'm just glad it's the weekend!

I've had 14 rad sessions so far and last night got a splitting headache and started vomiting. Can't seem to drink anything without puking it up. Anyone else having nausea and vomitting problems?
-
Hello Everyone! Hurray, Saturday. No rads for any of us I hope!
I'm reading all the last 2 pages of posts. Everyone seems to be doing okay.MFGibby - I feel for you and the 3 little kids. It sounds way too hectic. Me too. Nancy, you might have a seroma again.....I think I might be a little puffed up there too. Nelia 48 - I count, too. 18, 15, 11. Renee, I'm going back to work on 4/21. A week after last rad. S Grimes, yes, my knees, feet also weird and sore - post Taxol? I also still have a bad rash that hasn't gone away on legs and torso and calfs have been VERY itchy the past 2 weeks. During the radiation zaps I can swear I do feel Currents of energy tingling at the treatment area. My arm does twitch.
I've done 8/25 treatments. So far, so good. Side effects:
1. diahhrea on Mon and Tues (nerves?)
2. Sore throat (doing up by my neck)
3. A bit sore - the boob bra too heavy.
4. a bit but not too much pink.
5. tightness - like someone's 'pulling' my collar at the breast area.
6. Afternoon tiredness
-
Okay, 24 hours after the nausea and vomiting starts it ends. No longer fatigued either. I'm hungry and going for a walk. Obviously, I had a regular old 24-hour bug. But since I've had cancer, when I hear hoof beats I think zebras.
-
Torchsong! My hubby & I pastor a church. Just saw where you were preaching.
O.K. I had a breakdown today. All week long off & on I have been having stomack pain, upper abdomen. Twice I have thrown UP TERRIBLY and I NEVER throw up. I am thinking it may be gall bladder problems. I know it is not the rad because the pain started Mon. a.m. before my first treatment.
Anyway, I was just like , "What else" & started crying. My sweet hubby was trying to console me.
-
Guess I'm joining the headache group, too. Today was terrible! Like a migraine or something! I had to darken the room, and when I fell asleep, I had such strange, vivid dreams!!!! Will I ever be glad when this is all over and done with!
Towdoe, sorry about the stomach pain! I'm sure nerves have a lot to do with it, too!
Cora
-
Feeling better today--I got my crown put back in, and for some reason the dentist gave me a "professional discount" of 50%!! Dont' know why, but I'm very grateful... I couldn't even thank him as i didn't realise it until I was home and really looked at the paperwork.
My underarm is feeling btter, too--not so itchy--so maybe it is the rads. Guess I'll have to do better with the emu oil in that area.
Here's to a restul SUnday, no more stomach aches, vomiting or headaches, and a great week next week for everyone!
Hugs
Martha

Towdoe.... If the stomach pain continues you should talk to your oncologist. I had the same pain upper abdomen and ended up having an endoscopy. I had a yeast infection in my esophagus from all the antibiotics and pain meds. I got so bad I could barely swallow. I am not saying this to scare you but I sure feel better now. I have been on medication for almost a month 5 times a day. Tomorrow is my last day.
Nelia... I too have been having migraines. I have them even when I did not have bc. However, what I am noticing is that if I over do it and get fatigued it triggers the migraine. The migraine then triggers the vomiting if I do not take my medication fast enough. I find that when I take it easy and do not try to do too much I feel ok. Just some thoughts on the headaches.
Enjoy the weekend everyone. Nancy

NancySchoen Hi, thanks for your reply, my seroma is in front of my under arm. The surgeon said they did a fair amount of looking around there for nodes and what they found was a bunch of scar tissue and no nodes. A by-product of effective Chemo. Honestly, it feels like a swollen lymph node to me, but 2 Radiology Oncologists say seroma and they can feel like lymph nodes according to him. I was pretty swollen after surgery, and the swelling and numbness is just starting to decrease. The CT prior to radiation says a seroma so....... I see my Rad Onc on Monday. So hopefully they know what they are talking about.
I have been battling THE worse cold for the last 3 weeks and can't seem to shake it! Coughing like crazy! But things could be worse I suppose so..... But since my bad news dept is closed I cannot any, only accepting good news!
Off to read a good book, to those not feeling better hope that changes soon!

Martha....The beauty of the cancer card. That's a dentist I would stick with for a life time.
I phoned my dentist prior to chemo for a cleaning and the hygienist would'nt contact the insurance company to see if this could be considered a medical issue. We don't have dental insurance. Her comment to me was "It's only $85." I'm changing dentist.
Wish you all well.

Nancy and everyone,
Thank you for all the information. I am trying to get the doctors note on Monday, but if I cannot I will call them and see what they say. I was suppose to start on Monday but they did not finish my plan so I have to go and have one more picture taken. I will officially start on Tuesday and I have to go 28 times so I will be finished in early May. I also had some cream with the paraben stuff (not sure on spell) in it. It is my understanding that that stuff is bad, but I do not know why. The front of the bottle says it's 100% ALOE. But I guess other stuff is added in.
It is great to have some of you old pro's guiding us newbies along. I wish we were all done. I also found it interesting that it is important to get most things done in the morning, and that you might get tired in the afternoon. Is that true with all of you that are a few weeks into this? Just trying to plan my future a little. I am going to Disneyland after one week of treatment and then the next weekend I am going on a plane trip to San Francisco after two weeks of treatment. Will I be able to do these? I am going to SF all by myself to visit my parents. I just want to make sure that you don't get to tired. Thank you for your advice. Kristi
-
Kristi are you talking about a note for jury duty. I had jury duty coming up when my BC was first discovered. I told my surgeon at our first meeting and he wrote a note saying I needed to be excused for a year. At that point, a year seemed a bit extreme to me but of course he was right - about 9 months for surgery, chemo and rads plus time to recover and catch up at work. Even though I had done a lot of reading, at that point I didn't really understand how long treatment would be and how much it would affect me. It was all so abstract and I was such a medical novice.
Kristi, this weekend (after my first 3 treatments), I didn't feel particularly tired. So far I only get tired a bit at about 3 PM after my treatment at about noon. I don't know how it will be later in rads.
-
Hi Ladies, Just found this thread and thought I've give my 2 cents, hope that's OK. I'm a bit backward in that I did rads 1st and am now doing chemo. I must say, for the most part, rads is not that bad. Nipple itch is no picnic, but the creams (like aquafor) really help. When/if the burn, pain or itch gets bad, an anti-inflamitory like Motrin, coupled with a bag of frozen peas really does the trick. Yes, frozen peas. Have a bag of the cheap generic kind in your freezer and when it gets bad (like around treatment day 20 or so) slap the bag on your boob over your shirt for a bit...sounds silly but it's a big relief. Near the end of treatment you will get REALLY tired, sleep as much as possible. Good luck all, if I made it thru, trust me so can you. Rock on.
-
I've also heard about Aquafor several times at the center from some of the patients. I'll keep it on my list if it gets bad.
Have a great week ladies.
-
Kristi.... I am sure you will be fine at Disneyland after the first week as I was fine and did a lot that week. As for going to your parents that will be good for you. You should do all the things you want to while you feel good.
I think that there are a few things going on with all of us as far as when and how fatigued we are after tx. I am 57 and quite frankly I am over weight and up until this happened I did not exercise. I am now doing 20 minutes every day on the eliptical and eating healthier. The other thing is I think there is some type of relationship between the time you have radiation and when you become fatigued. I have radiation at 10. I get up at 7 and I am good until about 2 so if you think about it that is 7 hours so that is actually pretty good. I think that maybe the radiation effects us about 4 or 5 hours after our treatment. I wonder if others feel the same way? Just remember each of us are different. So I wish you the best and enjoy your trips. Nancy
-
Hey Nancy, just getting caught up with the posts. Hope you're doing well. I am except for a spot under my arm that is like a blister that has been scraped open. It's really my fault, I forgot to not shave it and took 2 swipes with the razor before I remembered it was a no-no. Just early morning and on autopilot in the shower! I'll have the doc look at it tomorrow but it's really bothering me this weekend.
-
Morning, Ladies!
I was supposed to start rads this morning, but received a call stating that the machine was experiencing "issues"....lol....so I'm in a holding pattern for the day until they fix it.
I'm just glad that I wasn't under it at the time!
Robin
-
I'm half way through my rads, and just starting to notice myself getting tired late in the afternoon and evening. My appointment is at 1:00 pm, so that's about right. I try to get all my "stuff" done in the mornings. I sure don't feel like cooking dinner in the evenings, so plan out crock pot, or easy dinners for the rest of the month.
I didn't know we weren't supposeed to shave. No one told me that one. I seem to be having a hard time with that issue anyways, as it seems I can't get my arm up too high yet from surgery, and there seems to be a lot of extra fat and skin there in the way. Is that normal????? I feel like I need liposuction to get rid of it. Or is it just swelling that will go away after a while?

Hello everyone, well I slept 12 hours straight, (except for the night sweats!) on Friday night, I was tired! Felt like Chemo all over again! Jeeesh, I thought I was over that. I get rads at 3:00 everyday, and last week was the first week in a long time that I worked everyday, sometimes I take a day for an appt and to rest! That was after only 10 tx. I also have what looks like sun poisoning on my chest and I've been using the creams like crazy. Sooooo I'm officially very tired with all of this and just want my life back! I saw my onc last week and he told me I'd probably gain wt on Tamox., I gained about 8-10lbs with chemo, and I already had a good 5 to loose!
Well I'm glad I got that off my chest! On a good note, my bulbs are pushing thru! And I saw a Robin this morning! And most importantly, my HAIR is coming in! Life is Good!
Have a great day ladies!Cinda

Hi, Ann -
thanks for the radiation hints! I have my "simulation" scheduled for tomorrow - and they will no doubt begin the radiation treatment later this week - it's comforting to know that you found it to be not that bad. I suppose everyone has a different rads experience.
And - I am curious - why did they start you with rads prior to chemo?
