I am taking reishi mushroom supplements since June 08.  They are very expensive and made in Japan.  I also boil dried reishi mushroom water to drink too.  This was strongly recomemded by my sister's sister-in-law, who is a IBC survivor for more than 6 years, she's doing really good.  Also I was told to exercise a lot and get fresh air as much as possible.

I take a mushroom complex called AHCC (activated hexose correlate compound), it is a formula combining a blend of several species of mushrooms (which contain polysaccharides, amino acids and minerals) and calcium ascorbate, a potent, gentle-on-the-stomach form of vitamin C. AHCC (or Active Hexose Correlated Compound) is believed to promote enhanced immunity by increasing natural killer (NK) cell activity. It may also possess antioxidant properties, increase macrophage activity and support healthy liver function.

There is an ongoing FDA approved study on Turkey Tail Msuhrooms and breast cancer. It is through University of Minnesota. They are looking at whether turkey tail mushrooms help the low white count you sometimes get from chemotherapy. They are also looking at whether it helps shrink tumors and prevent recurrence.

Turkey tail mushrooms have been used in Asia for many years for several kinds of cancer. You can buy tea of capsules from www.fungi.com  I actually go out in the woods, gather my own and make them into tea. I am starting to grow several mushroom types including Reishi in logs in my backyard. Don't go gathering wild mushrooms yourself unless you really know what you are doing. If you are interested, join a local mycological club and they can help you find and identify the right mushrooms.

Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center ("MSKCC") has announced at the Annual Meeting of American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) in Chicago May 30 - June 3, 2008, the results of a government-funded clinical study which began in 2004 and confirms the immunomodulatory effects of Maitake extracts as well as "no dose-limiting toxicity". MSKCC also concluded that the clinical significance is unknown.

    [2006.08.21] Maitake Mushroom (Grifola frondosa)

    Maitake Mushroom (Grifola frondosa)
Maitake is an edible and medicinal mushroom grows in the northern part of the Temperate Zone in the Northern Hemisphere found in Japan, China, Europe and North America. Wild Maitake can be harvested in September and October. It forms large hands, mainly near the roots of big fagaceous trees such as white oak, beech, and tanbark oak. It grows in persimmon, plum, apricot, Prunus ume and oak trees. It invades the core of these trees. It decomposes lignin and leaves the cellulose, which is the cause of so-called white rot.
Wild Maitake has a good taste, a crisp texture, and an excellent aroma. It is considered the first-rank edible mushroom.
The scientific name of Maitake, Grifola frondosa, comes from the common name of fungi found in Italy. The name refers to a mythical beast which is half-lion and half-eagle. The Japanese name "Maitake," literally meaning "dance mushroom," is associated with its shape, which some believe resembles a dancing nymph. It is also said that people who found Maitake in a deep forest danced with joy since it was so rare and precious, which is the origin of the name.

Maintain your immune system throughout the year

Turkey Tail Mushroom (Coriolus versicolor), also known as "Yun Zhi" in China and "Kawara-take" in Japan, has been highly appreciated for its medicinal values by cancer patients in Asian countries for centuries. Extensive research was conducted on the immune enhancing and anti-tumor activities of fruit body of Turkey Tail since 1960s, and the famous PSK (polysaccharide-K; aka. Krestin) was developed from its cultured mycelium. It has been successfully marketed and prescribed for prolongation of life span for stomach, colon, rectum and lung cancer patients after surgery in conjunction with chemotherapy since 1977, and is still on the market in Japan. Also PSP (polysaccharide-peptide) was extracted from mycelium of Turkey tail in China in 1983, and subjected to Phase II and Phase III clinical trials. The result demonstrated significant benefit of PSP against stomach, esophagus and lung cancers.

Who would make the money from them?  Sorry to be sarcastic and I'm sure someone will be along shortly to imply that I have a conspiracy theory going, but I do think Flalady, that it isn't being used because it isn't profitable enough!!   I believe the Japanese studies are the fullest - and I understand they use mushrooms supplements as an adjunt to almost all cancer patients to strengthen their immune system..  I use it!  Best!

Yes Deidre. I'm sure that's a much more plausible explanation as to why doctors don't prescribe "mushrooms" ... rather than the fact that doctors actually want to cure their patients, not kill them with unproven remedies.

Not unproven - just not FDA approved yet and there is good reason to believe (based on the studies here in the US) that is will be FDA approved shortly as an adjunct to enhance the immune system.  LJ13 so you don't even like the concept of enhancing your immune system?  All the doc's I have met don't say "cure" when referring to patients who have had cancer, its "remission" and even that is iffy... doc's should be open to whatever helps their patients and I believe what we have seen in the US is that patients are deciding to see natural doc, alternative/ complimentary docs because they are no longer trusting doc's (conventional medicine) ALONE to "cure" them...

Number two cancer clinic in the world (Sloan Kettering) shows the value of mushrooms.  Read the article with your eyes open. It shows value as a possible treatment options.  If they choose not to pursue this information because a pharm will not pay them...Cancer patients will be the only one's hurt from the value of something God made and has given man an opporuntity to use this in a positive way.

I have no indication that there is any reason to enhance my immune system. It seems to fight infections quite satisfactorily. In fact, unfortunately, it may be too aggressive, as it seems to be attacking some of my joints (early symptoms of possible RA).

The immune system, as I have mentioned previously, is not responsible for fighting cancer. Potential future treatments may enlist the aid of the immune system. But DNA mutations caused my cancer, not a failure of my immune system. It appears my immune system did its job reasonably well, in confining the spread to the local nodes.

LB13:  OK so YOU don't have to enhance your immune system - what's the problem - no one is forcing you to do research or take the stuff?  We all get that you are not at all interested in anything EXCEPT the treatment you have chose for yourself..  What do you need from this interaction.. if you can define it I'll see if I can try to accomadate you, soothe you if you need, pacify you if necessary - but please define for us why you need to be in this place thrashing every idea Flalady puts up (or anyone else that has a promising idea)?

Deidre, you asked me if I objected to enhancing my own immune system. I answered the question. See 4 posts above here, where you asked, "LJ13 so you don't even like the concept of enhancing your immune system?"

Why must you be so argumentative, Deidre? I answered the question you asked. Why are you picking on me?

I go to an integrative med doc - my oncologist referred me to him actually.  I did the standard treatment and am now on some supplements - nothing crazy but I do take a special mushroom mixture and tumeric capsules.  The rest is all pretty boring stuff - vit d3, calcium, fish oil, coq10.

I try to eat well, use hormone free milk and cheese, buy organic whenever I can, eat as many fruits and veggies (especially veggies) as possible, very little meat (cuz I dont like it reallly) and exercise 30 mins - 1 hour a day.

To each his (her) own...for me - it is worth a shot!

Don't feed the troll - just ignore. Some people obviously do not understand pathophysiology and seem to want to expose their ignorance and misunderstanding of basic science for all to see. Let them discredit and embarrass themselves with post after post of misconceptions. It's a waste of time to address them, and let them hijack a thread.

I stopped trying to reason with them after it became clear there was such intense, unreasoning bias and ulterior agenda that no polite offer of scientific fact would have any impact, other than to incite more troll comments.

Flalady, you rock! Thanks for all your good work.

    Hi Vivre,

I've been having some nasty complications with my chemotherapy treatments that have made me very sick, so I haven't been able to post as much as I would like. I hope you enjoyed your mushrooms!

I primarily use ganoderma, AKA Reishi, mushroom extract. I get a very concentrated, high quality powdered ganoderma from my Chinese herbalist, and she gives me a discount so it is more affordable. There is very extensive research done on ganoderma, and it is very well established as a powerful immune system tonifier. My red and white cell counts have been staying high enough that I don't need Neulasta or any of the other granulocyte stimulating drugs, and I am already halfway through my chemo (TCH). I figure I am doing well in that department.

When I am done with the chemo I will start in earnest to rebuild my health, especially my immune system. I'm so glad there are these tools available for us.

I have a couple of questions for you shroomers (lol).  I have been very interested in adding some of these to my diet.  First let me ask if anyone has found an on line site that seems reputable.  I found one with the Reishi in powder form that is one lb for 30$.  Does this seem about right? I guess I can just add the powder to my food. I am wondering if there is a better way to take it.  I'm sure eating the actual mushroomw would be best but I highly doubt I am going to find them around here.

    Thanks FloridaLady for the article.

I understand that the mushrooms have to go through specific processes (I receive a newsletter put together by some doc's of different backgrounds who have done research on alternative approaches to healing) and they recommended purchasing them from www.mushroomscience.com (they DO NOT get any money for suggesting this site)..  So I get mine there and although right now they are out of Coriolus the Reishi's are about $15.00 and shipping is free..  Best

Also, FYI there is an article in the recent Readers Digest about "The Shocking Truth About Cancer Tests" AND under Health, News you Can Use there is another article on "The Magine of Mushrooms"..  Now this information is for the people who are looking to "disease-fighting phytochemicals" that are "linked to a lower risk of breast cancer in studies..."..  I'm sure LB13 won't be interested, and actually (normally) I'm not all that interested in Reader's Digest (not my favorite mag but my father in law sent us a copy)  but I think you will all find Aprils issue, if not informative (because many of you seem to very informed in this area), perhaps reassuring that the information is making it's way to the "general population"...

I bought my Reishi mushroom supplements in NYC, a Chinese store, I did a lot of research, this store offer the best price for the Japanese Reishi mushroom supplements.  Chinese cancer paitients more likely will try herbal things we called Chinese herbal medicine after we finish regular Western medicine, surgery, radiology and chemo.  We need herbal things to help us go back our normal life.

One thing my sister's sister-in-law told me, she's more than 6 years survivor of IBC, who's living in China, take some American Jinseng, every month eat a little stick, crashed it to powder form, put in some hot water, then let it sit for a while, then drink the whole thing,  American Jinseng is the best thing to restore your energy back, just remember don't eat too much, one or two sticks a month, never eat Korean jinseng, if you have cancer.
