Here is how Bush used AF1!
"From January 1, 2002, through Election Day on November 5, 2002, the President and Vice President made a total of at least 83 campaign-related trips, involving at least 168 campaign-related stops, at an estimated cost of $6.5 million in flight expenses. Political campaigns reimbursed the government for only an estimated $198,000 of these costs. The taxpayer paid an estimated 97% of the flight expenses, an estimated net cost of $6.3 million.
During the 2002 campaign year, the President took at least 46 trips involving at least 82 destinations to conduct campaign-related activities, at an estimated cost of over $4.7 million in flight expenses. Taking into account estimated reimbursements, the net cost to the taxpayer for these flights was an estimated $4.6 million.
During the 2002 campaign year, the Vice President took at least 37 trips involving at least 86 destinations to conduct campaign-related activities, at an estimated cost of $1.8 million. Taking into account estimated THE COST OF PRESIDENTIAL AND VICE PRESIDENTIAL POLITICAL TRAVEL reimbursements, the net cost to the taxpayer for these flights was $1.7 million.
If the President and Vice President in 2006 conduct campaign-related travel comparable to their 2002 campaign-related travel, the costs of flying the President and Vice President to 2006 campaign-related events are projected to be an estimated $7.2 million. Taking into account estimated reimbursements, the projected net cost to the taxpayer for these flights will be an estimated $7 million."Achi

Achi, wouldn't it nice if AF1 was really the most significant issue we had to worry about? How about the impending demise of GM? Or the collapse of the Japanese economy (and the drunken treasury minister)? Hell, I'm more worried about space debris than AF1. But thanks for setting the record straight on repeated abuse of the privilege during the Bushie years.
Suz, thanks for that fact from politifact! FYI: http://www.recovery.gov/ for more facts about the Recovery bill.
WOOOOHOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
-
So true about Amy, Suz.
I just remembered a funny stupid thing that Rush said the other day about the posting of the Recovery Bill:
"And, so, you can read every page, but you cannot keyword search it. It's not a text file as legislation normally is as posted on these public websites. They don't want anybody knowing what's in this." In fact, as Adobe Systems notes of PDFs: "You can run a search using either the Search window or the Find toolbar. In either case, Reader searches the PDF body text, layers, form fields, and digital signatures."
Poor Rush. Someone needs to give him a lesson in basic PDF functions.
That new www.recovery.gov site is impressive. Glad the folks in the WH know how to use the "Internets" and computers.

Obama is cleaning up another one of the messes Bush and co. left for him:
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Barack Obama has approved a significant troop increase for Afghanistan, Pentagon officials told CNN Tuesday.
Pentagon officials said Tuesday that President Obama will increase troops in Afghanistan.
The new troop deployment is expected to include 8,000 Marines headquartered from Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, as well as 4,000 additional Army troops from Fort Lewis, Washington.
"This increase is necessary to stabilize a deteriorating situation in Afghanistan, which has not received the strategic attention, direction and resources it urgently requires," Obama said in a written statement.
"The Taliban is resurgent in Afghanistan, and al Qaeda supports the insurgency and threatens America from its safe-haven along the Pakistani border." Obama added that the troop increase in Afghanistan would be made possible in part by the impending troop drawdown in Iraq.
Defense Secretary Robert Gates has said the original mission in Afghanistan was "too broad" and needs to be more "realistic and focused" for the United States to succeed.
"If we set ourselves the objective of creating some sort of central Asian Valhalla over there, we will lose, because nobody in the world has that kind of time, patience and money," Gates said during a recent Senate hearing.
About 38,000 U.S. troops are currently serving in Afghanistan.

hello obama ladies,
just cruising through today

i was so happy to see bristol palin come clean today with greta on the abstinence thing when she said teen abstinence is "not realistic at all."
"I hope that people learn from my story and just like - I don't know, prevent teen pregnancy, I guess."
thank you bristol palin...
...............
good to see you susan! and ditto on the amy kudos...
lots of positive obama thoughts today...:)))

Wooooooooooo-hoooooooooo! So glad bill was signed today. Loved watching it on TV. Also, announcer stated that the whole package will be available online for each of us to see where the money is being spent. Now, that's what I call transparency!
I'm a little worried though about Afghanistan as is my hubby. We don't believe we can win the "war" there, yet the danger of Pakistan being taken over by the Taliban is very frightening. That landscape is one of the most difficult to fight in. Reminds me of Vietnam--US troops were "outsiders" just like they are in Middle East. Hard to win the war when the opposition knows every nook and crannie of their respective country. I have my fingers crossed, and will continue to support Obama. At least he tells us what he wants to do and gives us information so we know what he will do. Unlike the previous Bush and company who just did whatever they wanted and then replied, "so what?" Change is good and it's here to stay!!!
Have a lovely evening to each of the Obama gals!! We rock!!!

First Lady Michelle Obama is featured in Vogue. I think she's classy and admirable. We're the same age. I cannot even begin to fathom what her life must be like. Like her hubby, she is calm, confident, and classy!
According to the Associated Press:
Every first lady since Lou Hoover -- save Bess Truman -- has been featured in the high-fashion magazine, but Mrs. Obama is only the second to grace the cover. She appears wearing a magenta silk sheath dress by Jason Wu, who also designed her inaugural gown.
Vogue's editor at large Andre Leon Talley called his interviews with Mrs. Obama ahead of President Barack Obama's swearing-in ceremony "one of the best experiences of my life."
"She's so accessible, natural and normal. There's nothing affected about her," he said.
Much of the eight-page feature inside is devoted to Mrs. Obama's self-described role as "mom in chief" to 10-year-old Malia and 7-year-old Sasha.
"I'm going to try to take them to school every morning, as much as I can," she said. "But there's also a measure of independence. And obviously there will be times I won't be able to drop them off at all. I like to be a presence in my kids' school. I want to know the teachers; I want to know the other parents."

-
I just love Michelle. I especially like how she doesn't make what she's doing for the country about her, because it isn't. I think she would be a great pol after the 8 years of Obama's presidency. I think she should run for Governor of Illinois, that state could use a leader with integrity and competence of our beloved first lady.
grace- I too am concerned about Afghanistan. I would much rather see covert Ops going after specific targets. Whatever happens, we need support from the UN. This should not be a USA vs. war but a UN vs. war . I wonder about a peace keeping effort aimed at empowering and educating women about their rights.
laura- I am glad Bristol made it clear that she chose to have the baby and that had she chosen differently, it wouldn't be her mother's decision. I'm alshat abstinence only education just isn't realistic. She seems to have changed her mother's mind too.
-
Ugh- Have you guys heard about this? I refuse to post the racially offensive picture. The cartoon is beyond insensitive. I doubt any animal lover, even if they don't like Obama, can't be happy to see the sad story of chimp cariacturized. Aren't the days of comparing blacks to primates a thing of the past????????????? Even if that wasn't the exact intent of the cartoonist, surely he realized many would interpret his drawings this way. The guy should be fired. I'm all for freedom of speech and artistic expression, but that doesn't mean the NY Post needs to print everything that is submitted or that readers should be subjected to having that appear in their papers.
NY cartoon appears to link Obama to dead chimp
By KAREN MATTHEWS - 1 hour ago
NEW YORK (AP) - The Rev. Al Sharpton says a New York Post cartoon that appears to link President Obama to a violent chimpanzee is "troubling at best."
The cartoon in Wednesday's Post by Sean Delonas shows a dead chimp and two police officers, one with a smoking gun.
The caption reads, "They'll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill."
The cartoon refers to Travis the chimp, who was shot to death by police in Stamford, Conn., on Monday after it mauled a friend of its owner.
It links the chimp to Obama, who signed his administration's economic stimulus plan on Tuesday.
Sharpton called the cartoon offensive and divisive.
The Post had no immediate comment.
-
good morning obama ladies

that is indeed troubling but consider the source, i am not surprised... isn't the nypost like the washington times
a total rag?
-
Hi Laura,
The NY Post is a total rag (owned by Rupert Murdoch).
Frequently needs to be protested.
-
The cartoon implies that the stimulus bill was written by a chimp...smart chimp to author a thousand page tome in such a short time.
Has anyone implied that Obama was in any way the author of that bill?
Why do you jump to the conclusion that the chimp represents Obama, not Reid and Pelosi and company?
Would it still be in bad taste if you see it as directed toward congressional democrats? Yes. Would it still be seen as racist? No. Do we censor bad taste in this country? No
Since when is Al Sharpton the last word on what is and is not acceptable in this country?
-
not much of a jump really, and i don't think anyone will say al sharpton is the last word but i do agree with sam stein over at huffpo:
Sam Stein, a columnist for the site, wrote that "at its most benign, the cartoon suggests that the stimulus bill was so bad, monkeys may as well have written it. Most provocatively, it compares the president to a rabid chimp. Either way, the incorporation of violence and (on a darker level) race into politics is bound to be controversial."
http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5jlBBpB0_XF-eJt6GGtXCSl5bfV1AD96E4GSO0
the incorporation of violence is very disturbing. nerves are so raw these days, leave it to the post to capitalize on that.

What the Stimulus Plan Means for Cancer Survivors
According to David Lofye at the Lance Armstrong Foundation, the economic stimulus package that was signed into law, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 included a number of items of interest to the Lance Armstrong Foundation:
10 billion to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for biomedical research (including at least $1.2 billion for cancer research).
$1 billion to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for prevention and wellness programs including cancer screening and education programs.
65% federal subsidy for COBRA health insurance premiums for up to nine months for workers who lose their jobs from September 1, 2008 through December 31, 2009. $87 billion to help states restore recent service cuts to Medicaid programs.
$19 billion for a national health information technology system to support electronic medical records in hopes of lowering medical costs and improving quality of care.
The Foundation advocated in support of many of these provisions and believes that these investments have the potential to improve the lives of people affected by cancer.
The Foundation will continue to engage Congress and the new Administration to ensure that these funds are spent in a manner that will have the greatest possible impact.
-
Doesn't Rupert Murdoch also own Fox TV? 'Nuff said....
-
I was in a 7-11 type store earlier with a freind and opened the to the page of the cartoon. It really is horrible. There is no positive spin that can be put on that cartoon.
suz- I assume you were asking a rhetorical question.
Maddy- Cobra is important to everyone in this economic climate, IMHO, because most of the people losing jobs aren't going to have any health care w/o it. At a certain age everyone's got preexisting conditions. I know a 25 year old who has the HVP virus. She was treated several years ago and had no signs of recurrence. It wasn't even the strain of HVP that causes cancer. When she went to grad school she couldn't find health care, couldn't afford cobra and her college didn't offer health care to grad students. Her choices were lying or not having insurance basically.
-
You guys have to watch hardball-- but make sure you use the restroom first. The funny part is about 32 minutes into the show. I promse you'll laugh yourself silly.
-
Gulp! I thought I was lost for a second. OK here we go, one more time.
WHOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOO Change is here and it sure feels good.
Achi
-
achi- did you see the cartoon we're talking about. I was curious to hear from blacks what they thought, given the symbolism and its racial history.
-
I'll tell you, using the tragedy of what happened with the chimp offends me. I can't stand to see any animal hurt or killed, even a cartoon.
-
Interesting we are having this discussion about racism in journalism/newspapers. I was on the way home from my LE therapy appt, listening to my favorite classical station, and they took a news break. Announced something Holder has said during a talk that--racism is still alive and well in this country, and he intends to hit it head on. Hooray!! I'm tired of all the racist tripe that gets put in newspapers and on the radio. It's time the perpetrators were called on their nasty stuff. Here we are almost 50 years after the Civil Rights Movement and people are still racist. We have a long way, a very long way to go if we believe we can educated these people who insist on continuing racism--and in covert or overt ways--it's amazing what pops out of people's mouths. I continue to be somewhat amazed--guess I'm living in an area where we treat each other with respect, regardless of our skin color or circumstances.
Count me as offended and I've only read about what it said--I haven't seen the pic and hope I don't run across it somewhere.
Have a fab evening Obama supporters. Woooooooooooooo-hoooooooooooooooooo!! Ca-ching, Ca-ching--the change is pooring in. Hee-hee!!
-
maddy- the chimp situation is so tragic to everyone, including the chimp.
Grace- I purposely looked for it in print, I didn't want the website to get any hits/advertising bucks from me. I wanted to see it to make sure I formed my opinion based on what I saw, not how someone else described it. What's troubling is that the Post responded flippantly and defensively about the cartoon, rather than apologizing for offending folks. Sharpton is planning a march, I wish I could be there for it tomorrow. I'm even express how sad I am that there are white people who think it's ok to revive racist "jokes" that have long been deemed to be inappropriate. The majority must take it upon themselves to be sensitive of minorities and their cultural sensitivities. I still believe that with dialogue and over the years of Obama's presidencyt.95% of the population will move forward in their thinking. It'll never be 100% . People like Rush will probably die prejudiced-- why anyone would give him a forum to spew that hate is beyond me. Don Imus lost his job for being racially insensitive because his viewers had enough. I 'm going to find out who sponsors those hate shows and post on all my boards about a boycott.

Hiya Obama supporters. Some random comments.....
ladysuz--Michelle's outfit was from J.Crew. Love it, too!
AnnNYC--As always, thanks for clarifying info with facts--appreciated your info over on the--stimulus "final conference report" thread
gpawelski--Glad you posted the info about what the stimulas plan means for cancer survivors. And as someone who works in an industry that has/is experiencing layoffs, I find the cobra info comforting.
The cartoon issue is distressing on so many levels. And dontcha love the arguement of well, so and so was called nasty names in the past. Oh, ok, so that justifies this? Can't we grow up? And can we censor "stupid?" (I'm referring to the cartonist ; )
Re: afghanistan--this is where we should have concentrated our efforts to begin with insteading of getting entangled and bogged down in Iraq. Let's hope we get it right, this time. It won't be easy.
Anyone catch Stephen Colbert last night talking about Glen Beck--too funny!!!!! I love John Stewart and Colbert.
Hmmmmm, Palin owes back taxes......is there any politician out there who isn't plagued by tax problems?
Anyway, our country is moving forward and looking forward.
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

Kathy Sebelius for Health and Human Services Secretary ?

................................
Happy to see Obama roll out his mortgage relief plan today.
Onward and Upward
woooooooooooooooooohoooooooooooooooo...

-
Laura--just checked out the NYT article you posted. She sounds like a good choice.
-
had a bit of trouble finding you all--been away for a bit........but, wanted to pass on some good strokes I recently received on a vaca out of the US--everyone we met was so wonderfully hopeful for positive changes, and all agreed that it will take time but all so optimistic...it was a good feeling! Saw many newsstand magazines/books, etc, with Obama on front cover--but did not buy any, because I couldn't read them!...I am happy that for the first time in a LONG time, being a visitor from the US was a good thing!
-
Hey, Junie, thanks for passing on the overseas update! It's been interesting hearing about Hillary's Asia trip too. Sounds like she's getting a much warmer reception than her predecessor.
Hoping, love that cartoon. I think that elephant looks a little like Boehner around the shifty eyes.
Afghanistan, and Pakistan, are even more complex than Iraq. I know Obama is studying the options, although it sounds like there aren't any real good ones. What do they say about it? It's where empires go to die?
Sibelius is a sharp one. Another woman in the cabinet can't hurt!
-
I mentioned this before, unless you are African American, you will never really know or understand about racism. I found the cartoon disgusting as did many of my friends of all different colors. The psychological scars that cartoon takes us back to the 50's and 60's. Sadly, I have come to the conclusion that if you are not white, you don't belong here.
I'm confused and a little disgusted at all the racial statements being said. So you see, racism even trickles down to a breast cancer support board. Sigh!
WOWOWOWOWOWOWOW
Ok, get ready - as this will be the last time I come here. I'm sure there are support boards available for African Americans somewhere.
WHOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOO, change is here and it sure feels good.
Achi

laura- I love love love Kathleen Sebelius. I knew she was a long shot for Veep, but I hoped anyway.
hoping- Palin owes back taxes--- we knew that she had a tenuous relationship with ethics during the campaign. I guess the republicans only care when dems are the ones who have problems missing something on their back taxes. I love the cartoon you posted.
junie- thanks for sharing that. It's so nice to be respected in the world again!
achi- there is an african american section of this board, though I'm not sure if it gets invaded by people who don't support that board's mission. I hope you come back here. You've got a lot to offer and we are on your side. It is sad that racism trickles down to a breast cancer board, but I hope you won't take a few bad comments to judge how many people support you.
