Anyone have chemo for < 1cm IDC

I received a copy of my pathology report after having my mastectomy on Feb 3rd.  It turned out to be IDC along with the DCIS and LCIS.  My pathology is pT1b and the tumor is < 1cm and is grade 2.  No lymph nodes involved. I am 38 years old and my mom just completed her chemo for IDC.  ( I had a mastectomy because of her dx and that's how mine was found.)

I'm just wondering if I there is a possibility that chemo will be suggested for me.

    It's likely it will be recommended based on your age.  I was dx with IDC and DCIS at age 35 and though the combined tumor size was over 2 cm, the larget tumor itself was .8 mm, so I was stage 1. I had the Oncotype test done on the tumor, which gave me a recurrence score.  This is often done on women with a hormone receptor positive (ER/PR +) and lymph node negative cancer.  The test gives an idea of how likely it is the cancer will recur in 10 years.  In my case, the recurrence score wasn't high, but 2 oncologists recommended 4 rounds of chemo since I was so young at dx and had multi-focal tumors.

     Just to prepare you, not to scare you.  Ask about the Oncotype test.

    How long did it take for the oncotype test to be done on the tumor?

    What is your hormone status?  If you are triple neg, they may recommend chemo for you.

    yes...I am having four rounds of chemo due to oncotype of 26...the test took about 2 weeks to come in.....

    Cindy - I had chemo, along with lumpectomy, radiation, and herceptin.  Of course, I was HER2+, which was the biggest factor in deciding to have chemo.  My impression is that they try to be very aggressive, particularly in treating younger women.  I wish you the best.

    Hi, Cindy !

    Yes, I have (or had) a similar situation to yours.  It is rather a sordid story.   But, I did end up going through chemo due largely to my age (43) hormone receptor status (weakly ER positive, PR negative), and Her2 status (highly positive).   Despite my small tumor, I keep finding myself on the wrong side of all the prognostic indicators for recurrence, which is why my doc kept pushing the chemo.

    Hi,,,,

    I had a 1mm and a 4 mm idc grade 1,,,found with my grade 1 dcis....My ER was 3/3 and PR 2/3 and her2 -. 

    With that...they advised no chemo and gave me Tamoxifin.

    I did not do oncotype as they said that the sample was too small.

    Woops....and I also wanted to add that I was 39 when diagnosed....

    Onc thot that with a small <1cm tumor that the risk vs benefits with chemo were high and that I would benefit more from tamoxifin.

    I had chemo/herceptin for my 5 mm grade 1 tumor only because it was Her2+. My onc told me that if I had not been Her2+ that my risk of distant recurrence would only have been about 2% and they would never recommend chemo for that. But since I was Her2+ it was more like 10% so there I went. Good luck.

    My tumor at surgery was 7mm, However, the core needle biopsy got a huge chunk and there was some discussion the size might have been a little more then a cm.  My oncotype came back today at 26 and I am having chemo.  The tumor was grade 3 and showed anaplastic changes which means it was fast growing and the cells did not look like normal cells.  So, I start 4 cycles of adriamycin/cytoxane next Tuesday.  With a oncotype of 26 my chance of recurrence was 17% and the oncologists felt I should have chemo.  I am 58, but I have a  15 year old son and plan on being here for another 25 years so I felt the decision to have chemo was the right decision.

    The Oncotype DX test typically takes 10-14 days to be completed.
