I thought starting over with a new, unattacked thread would be nice, after all, our Obama has been in office a whole week. He's trying to reach across the aisle (to everyone but Rush, but I don't blame him on that, his arms are only so long). Obama didn't even like the joke Biden made about Roberts messing up the oath, so he really means business.

I hope this thread can be the best of what the old thread was, and that I and anyone else who became frustrated with a person, people, political party can enjoy less conflictual thread. We waited 8 very very very very long years for a president like Obama, even longer for those of us who became disillusioned with Clinton. I have a lot of hope that our civil rights and those on our soil domestic and abroad will be more important to obama, that gays will no longer be treated as 2nd class citizens by society and the military, that women will once again have stronger reproductive choices here and throughout the world, that prisoners will no longer be hostages and they will be treated with human decency and not tortured.

On a personal note, as great as the inauguration was, I have felt like crapola ever since. I've had migraines on and off (mostly on) since then, and a lot of fibro fatigue and low grade fevers... blaaah. My headache has been gone for about 3 hrs, so hopefully it'll stick.

    Hello,

You are soooooo right about the long wait for a President Obama! I am going to take a leap of faith and say that he was worth the long wait. Truly, I can feel a change in the atmosphere. I honestly believe that the country that we knew just a few weeks ago is no longer. We are at the start of a new day and it feels so good. One thing that really makes me happy is the way that the world will begin to see us. We will begin to mend relationships that were impossible to mend in the Bush era. I also feel that NATO will be of importance to President Obama. We just have to stay positive and keep that energy going!

Tracey- where's the wooooooooooooooooooooohoooooooooooooooooooo, LOL. Your post seemed empty w/o it. I believe that no matter how Obama's presidency is viewed in history, it will be viewed as one of the most important ones because he was the first person to break through the dominant white male model for US presidents. I think the same is true for Kennedy, who was the first catholic and will be true for the first woman, jew, latino, gay, muslim, atheist etc. because all cultural segmenta of the population probably want to feel as if they can hold the highest office in the land. In another century, when hopefully all subgroups of the country have been represented, this won't be an issue.  I love seeing children and teens inspired by the elections because they're the future of the country.

suz- I'm shocked birthcontrol isn't already covered under medicaid. I would think that's a no brainer. I do think that while vital, birth control isn't overtly economically stimulating,  this needs to be covered somewhere. No one should be denied birth control. About 20 yrs ago I took a teen from a youth group I led (as a volunteer) to planned parenthood for it. She came up to me saying she was having unprotected sex and wanted birth control but was afraid to go alone, so of course I took her. I helped her fill out the forms and gleaned some scary yet important information. The form asked at what age she lost her virginity and she asked me, "with my boyfriend or my brother." EEK. I said the first time, trying not to freak  her out by freaking out. She wrote down 8. Frown It also came out that her "boyfriend" was in his late 30s. The doctor was able to help her with reporting and help get her younger sisters safe and I was able to help her understand more of the dynamics of what had transpired.  You just never know when free access to something like birth control can lead to more important life saving things.

Have you guys been reading about the murder/suicides in the past week from people who have lost jobs? So very sad. I'm sure some of the people had extenuating circumstances and/or mental health issues, but it's still so sad.  It reminds me of the people who killed themselves when the stock market first crashed in 29. I think for a lot of people Obama's presidency is hope that neither the poor nor the rich will reach that precarious place.

Right on Amy!!!  Let's see how long this one lasts.  I'm going to delete the other thread from my favorites.  And they have already deleted 2 of my posts.  Nothing even negative on there!

Anyway..President Obama continues to do fantastic things, I am so impressed by him!!!!  He has the repubs heads spinning around trying to keep up.   That is true!  I can't believe they are fighting him on the stimulus package.  As it was the Bush era that bought it to this point.

I did see the man in CA that killed himself and family.  The nation is dug in a deep hole.  But I am really feeling so positive about President Obama.

    So...I'll give out the WhoooooooooooooHoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

    Hi all,

Canceling the old  thread  from my favs. I will  try be positive most of the time except I do have to express some of my opinions  when I post on this thread.

Somehow the Republicans don't want to remember what the last 8 years  brought about in our country; a doubled national debt is just one thing Obama inherited.

We give Bailouts to rich bankers, who subsequently purchase 50 million dollar jets and expensive office  furnishings, see ex Merrill Lynch CEO's 1.4 million dollars office redo, I forget his name. However, when Washington decides in this package to help to the  working class, and enable them to pay less taxes, they don't like  those ideas at all; I believe this is a mistake on their part.

One Republican congressman, said earlier today that he thought  including funds in this bill  for disabled children  would not stimulate our economy.  It's considered Socialism to help, out of work people who are suffering  primarily because of  the Wall Street  bankers with their complicated  financial schemes.

Obama is going to be a strong president - he commented today how he and his girls were surprised at how DC couldn't handle the snow but in Chicago (Illinois) life goes on and school is never (okay, rarely) cancelled because of snow!

And, LOVE the political cartoon above!!!

    Hey Laura,

I love the art work! Makes the place more homey!!

News reports indicated that Limbaugh really has moved from a centrist conservative to the "fringe." The large majority of conservatives dont' even consider his vitriol as vital to the Republican party--he is supported by a very far right wing conservative minority. I thought that was interesting, as the reporter stated that 30 years ago the Republican Party considered his voice very important in helping to  "get the word out" on policies and platform.

Obama is looking good. I am so glad he is president. Amazing how this man is moving this country forward given the double digit deficit Bush & Company passed on to him--what a gift!

Glad to see the new thread, Amy.

Too bad Little-G, mine and other' posts were removed on the other Obama thread. I agree with Little-G, they were not negative. Sometimes there are some mean-spirited people in this world. Glad we have a positive bunch on this thread!

Enjoy watching the news every day to see the changes Obama is making. I believe our relations with the world will improve. I was impressed by his Arab news station interview he gave. I thought he set just the right tone. Want to see more of that.

Also impressed that he will go to Congress to get support for the changes he would like to make. I think that is important. If he didn't I'm sure some would say he is an "elitist," and of course his going there makes him seem like he thinks he is going to bully congress. Seems he can't win no matter what he does when it comes to some people in this country. Oh well.......

Thanks Amy for giving us a new place to shout out our support for Obama and change.

Can I do a Wooooooooo-hooooooooooooooooo since tracey didn't? Don't want to steal your woo-hoo sign off tracey. :))

My computer is very slow tonight -- but it looks to me like the "Miami water slide" and other "pork" were items on a wish list prepared in 2007 by the U.S. Conference of Mayors -- not part of Obama's plan, but something that lobbyists are trying to piggyback onto it...

hi amy and ladies!!!!  Laura- are you saying I'm not a lady Tongue out ;).

I would have written the economic plan differently, putting much more emphasis on infrastructure and taking away the tax credits.  Rachel had an in interesting chart on how much return for the dollar types of stimulus have based on the nonpartisan Moody's report.   http://www.economy.com/mark-zandi/documents/assissing-the-impact-of-the-fiscal-stimulus.pdf  The chart is set up so that it shows how much  per dollar is returned on different types of stimulus spending. Permanent tax cuts lose 70 cents on the dollar, where things like a temporary increase in food stamps or unemployment benefits earn $1.73 and $1.68 respectively.  I do think that republicans on the hill are looking out for their wealthier constituents and themselves rather than the big picture of getting the economy back on track.  Similar studies show that putting  money in the hands of the lower income folks means the money will be spent because of the immediate needs of basic needs, but middle and upper income folks tend to save because their needs aren't as basic to survival.

I think americans as a whole need to be less selfish when looking at how the stimulus will benefit them as individuals and more selfless in how the stimulus will benefit the country. To me, infrastructure spending is a perfect example of benefitting generations to come, who will likely still be paying for the money we borrow to save the economy.  Focusing on wind and solar energy will help lessen our dependence on foreign oil AND help save the economy (no drill baby drill using faulty science to justify ruining the flora and fauna of the planet). Focusing on infrastructure, power lines and broadband will save us from having to deal with that in an emergency, which will cost more, It's gotta be done sooner or later, and later is more expensive. Refurbishing low income homes in an energy efficient way, like adding solar panels, will not only create jobs, but will also save money in low income energy assistance. Smart spending is the key.

If the plan does include tax credits or cuts to appease the republicans, let that money be given in spending cards like the red cross cards given to people after Katrina. Make the cards expire in a set number of weeks or months to be sure the money is spent and not saved. I called and emailed the white house with my ideas, but am not sitting by the phone waiting for a response. Cool

LOL- I think I have good ideas too. I've been emailing Barack Obama with them for 2 years! Sometimes when i think I have a good one I email them to my representatives too (never being narcissistic enough tio think I'll get a response). Once in a while I'll get a reply. If Barack ever called back I'd be like that congresswoman from FLA who thought she was being punked and hang up on him!

(sorry for the big letters, I can't figure out how to make them smaller)I've been following this for years. Lilly Ledbetter, another pioneer. This is one of the reasons women in this country are so lucky to have Obama as president. McCain and company just didn't get why this is important. No one will ever be able to explain to me how any woman could oppose equal pay for equal work. This is why we need some new liberal supremes. How the heck could someone who didn't know she was being paid unequally for equal work file withing 180 days of getting the first unequal paycheck if she didn't have a clue she was being paid unfairly???? If it were up to me, I'd take out the statute of limitations or expand it to 5 years.WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Barack Obama signed a new pay-equity measure into law Thursday, effectively overturning a 2007 Supreme Court decision that made it harder to sue for pay discrimination. The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Restoration Act is the first bill President Obama signed. The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Restoration Act is the first bill President Obama signed. Click to view previous image 1 of 2 Click to view next image The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Restoration Act, named for a former Goodyear Tire employee who sued the company for gender discrimination in 1998, is the first bill signed by Obama."It is fitting that with the very first bill I sign ... we are upholding one of this nation's first principles: that we are all created equal and each deserve a chance to pursue our own version of happiness," Obama said at a ceremony in the East Room of the White House."If we stay focused, as Lilly did, and keep standing for what's right, as Lilly did, we will close that pay gap and ensure that our daughters have the same rights, the same chances, and the same freedom to pursue their dreams as our sons."The new law removes a provision requiring employees seeking equal pay to file a complaint within 180 days of receiving their first unfair paycheck.House acts to make pay-discrimination suits easier House approves Obama stimulus bill Under the measure, employees instead have the right to file within 180 days of their most recent paycheck.Supporters of the Ledbetter Act have argued that, under the old standard, an employer merely needed to hide unfair pay practices for three months before being able to continue them without penalty forever.Lilly Ledbetter was awarded $360,000 in back pay by a federal judge in Alabama, but the verdict was overturned in a 5-4 Supreme Court ruling in May 2007. The court said that even though she filed her complaint within 180 days of when she first learned that she was getting paid less than comparable male employees, she had failed to file within 180 days of the first unequal paycheck.During the 2008 presidential campaign, the Ledbetter Act proved to be a significant point of contention between Obama and Republican nominee Sen. John McCain. Obama heavily emphasized what he called the plan's benefits to working women, while McCain criticized it as a boon for trial lawyers.Obama later danced with Ledbetter at one of his inaugural balls. She also spoke at the 2008 Democratic National Convention."My case is over. I will never receive the pay I deserve," Ledbetter said in that speech. "But there will be a far richer reward if we secure fair pay for our children and grandchildren, so that no one will ever again experience the discrimination that I did."

Hey, I haven't seen you in a while, Benita.

There's not one answer for how the economy got so bad, but I can give you some nonpartisan reasons, even though I've got some partisan ones too ;).  I'm not going to go into allllll the minutia of each point.

    1) Energy Dependence- The price per barrel of oil went up, for a variety of reasons including India and China having more cars and using more of the world supply. Simple supply and demand.

    2) Mortgage/Bank issues-  The government wanted more people to own homes and made it easier. That wasn't so much the problem as predatory lending and people taking out more loans than they could pay. There were also mortgages and loans that had very small payments in the beginning, sometimes just paying the interest and not the principle. These mortgages ballooned up after several years to where the lendee was then paying both principle and interest, which made the loans too expensive. The idea of these loans in ideal theory is that people take out such a loan and then their income continues to grow so when they are forced to pay more money, they can afford it.  These people who cannot pay, do not have any equity in their homes, so the people are out, the lending places are out money and this makes the companies at times insolvent and bankrupt. Additionally, rather than banks and mortgage companies owning their own debt, they debt was sold and resold and resold to a questionable brokerage outlets, so that part of one's debt could be owned by multiple companies.

    3) The Dow Jones has been deregulated to where megacheating and incompetent mismanagemant were allowed to develop without oversight.

    4) We've been importing more than exporting and things that used to be made in the USA is now made overseas, which leads to job loss, less taxes coming in to cities and the country etc higher unemployment numbers means more people on welfare and foodstamps, which costs the gov. money.

    5) People have lost confidence in the stock market, so they aren't investing and have pulled some of their money out of the market, which leads to drops in the dow which leads to people being less confident.

    6) What happens financially in the USA financially and on the dow effects other countries, which effects out country like a viscious circle.

    7) We've borrowed as a country out the wazoo, we owe china, japan, india and who knows what other country a TON of money, all with interest.

We need a man like Obama in Canada.  He stikes me as a decent, fair man with ... gasp .. common sense.  He understands hard work.  I think he also understands how Bush insulted our country by breaking with the tradition of making Canada his first visit as President.  Bush really pi**ed us off.  Sadly I think Harper will be a big disappointment to Obama when they meet next month.  IMHO Harper has the personality of a wet noodle.  The other party leaders are worse, we have no alternatives.  No one with foresight or common sense or creative thinking.  I won't even get started on pay equality for women, or how our disabled are treated.  The UN is asking questions about Canada's treatment of women - single mothers, and the 600 or so missing native women ... I could go on and on.

We do have a few issues between us that need sorting out, softwood lumber being one of them.  I hope if NAFTA is revisited, that they will negotiate a fair deal for all participants because it isn't a fair deal now.  Given that we share a continent we should all work a lot harder together to save our environment and better use of our natural resources.

President Obama has a big job ahead of him and I wish him nothing but success.  Responsible success, for all of our sakes.  Our thinking here along the lines of gay rights and marriage may be more progressive, but we still have a long way to go when it comes to just about everything else.

I hope it's okay to add my WOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOO because Obama RAWKS.

I think we Canadians were most insulted after 9/11 when Bush -- in thanking all the countries that helped out -- left out our country whose government and citizens did, arguably, the most to help our next-door neighbour, not least by allowing planes to land immediately and travellers to be taken care of.  Oh, and some 39 Canadians died in the towers, not to mention citizens of other countries.  And, rumours to the contrary, the perpetrators of 9/11 did not enter via Canada, as a subsequent investigation conclusively proved.

IMHO, the atmosphere of fear which has been promulgated continuously ever since then has had harmful effects on U.S. citizens.  I know there are many who give Bush credit for "keeping you safe".  Well, propaganda will do that!  Here's hoping Obama et al can start to erase those effects -- replacing fear with hope for the future.  We're looking forward to his visit Feb 19.

    Cheers,

    Linda

I do think birth control stimulates economically! The lower middle class should be helped to have only the kids they want and no more, as every child is very expensive!

    Just my two cents.

Love Obama, and hope he can do it for America!

    Bluze,

Enjoyed your perspective as a Canadian of Obama. And the disdain another country has for Bush. I don't think Bush is well known for his social graces at times.

Of course, wooooo-hooooo all you like here. We welcome those who like to discuss Obama's presidency. After the last 8 years, this country can only go up from here.

    lindasa,

Yes, I'm tired of the last President's fearmongering. It really got to be rather funny at times. I'm sure Obama's trip to Canada will be wonderful. When my dh and I travelled through Canada in 2003, the Canadians we met were most helpful and welcoming. I hope we can return someday--those were the days that a drivers license could allow us to cross the border both ways. LOL

    jader,

I don't know where you are hearing that from but I suggest you ask that question on the RR thread. Visiting his web site will give you a good idea of what he plans to do. You can look at Obama's plans at whitehouse.gov

    Jader,

As I understand it, "Socialism refers to a broad set of economic theories of social organization advocating state or collective ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods."

I am 100% certain that Barack Obama does not advocate collective or government ownership of factories, mines, shipping companies.

Actually, the closest thing we have to socialism within the United States is the state of Alaska's ownership and control of oil production, sale and distribution -- with distribution of the profits to the citizens of Alaska.  My understanding is that that's working really well for Alaska -- I'm serious.

Thx Ann.  Friends at work were talking about socialized med coverage as being something that Hillary and Obama were working towards.  The talk about redistribution of wealth -- I am not sure what that really means or how it would be handled?  I do agree that there is mismangement of the huge companies we depended on like Merril Lynch and Lehman Bros. And then u have AIG insurance co. and others who pay outrageous bonuses and then claim to be in need or claim bk.

Then they were talking about if they help GM and other auto giants, and if they get ownership, then they will have a say in the running of the company.

Problem -- I think american ppl should expect to get ROI .. return on investment so I understand getting a stake in them.  If the name was Gates instead of USA, it would be ok for Gates to have a say, to get involved in board meetings or whatever if he was majority stock holder.  But it can quickly become a socialist state if the govt owns companies and has operational say.

Do you see what I am getting at?

Ladies, We can only wish that Obama would bring us closer to socialism-- imagine no one being uninsuredI I'm not going to fall into a trap of defending Obama against old campaign consprisy theorists.

How about that "Strengthening middle class" task force! I love how Biden welcomed labor unions back to the White House. I'm glad that Obama said the middle class isn't just the middle class, but those who aspire to be in the middle class. The previous administration seemed to blame labor for the problems in the economy and it's refreshing to have a president who gets it.

I am confused about socialism. I thought England was considered to be socialist? Maybe they just have socialized medicine?  After looking on the internet about what true socialism is, I would not want this for US  and it certainly is not the way England operates.  So what kind of gov't does England have?
