Thanks, Dotti. I think I saw Rimmel on sale this week at CVS so I'll go in there today and see what colors they have. I want to get something lip-toned to try that idea. In the past, I tried enlarging my lips with liner but I looked like a total clown. When I attended a LGFB session while in chemo, the old hairdresser who did it insisted that I make my lips larger with liner and she proceeded to draw them on for me. It was so gross, even the other ladies there snickered. I'm hoping maybe the flesh-toned liner can be done more subtly. As I said, I have never needed liner for bleeding because for some reason that is one little problem I don't have. Yet, anyway.

My washing machine died Saturday so I will be out buying one of those, too, today. Crapola.
-
Not that I'm glad your washing machine broke, Tina, but washing machines are so wonderful these days, I'm a little jealous that you get to buy a new one!.
-
Might as well get a new matching dryer, one of those with the $team feature!!
-
Tina- I agree with the above... sorry you're washer broke, but OMG- the choices!!! Front loader, energy saver, digital with steam, heavy stain removal and other amazing settings!
-
OMG girls. How can you get off on a washing machine??? You crack me up.
First of all, I am a Yankee.
I researched my options (I need to be able to use the machine to felt wool, too, BTW.) and talked to friends and other people who have fairly recently bought machines and ended up buying a regular top-loader (my water is free) in white. The best I could buy in a solid machine that will do the job. Hopefully for the next 20 years.
Did I ever mention that I am a Yankee??? LOL
Okay, makeup. My local CVS does not carry Rimmel. Shirt. I ended up buying a natural toned pencil for .99 by NYC or something like that. That Yankee thing again. I suspect it won't work just like all the other ones I have tried and then I've only wasted .99.
OTOH, I have been known to spend inordinate amounts of money on selective weaknesses. Like Champagne almost every night. Go figure. I guess that's why our mortgage was paid off after 11 years and we've been debt free since 1988.
-
Tina, if you get a new dryer you can get one of those ones with the wrinkle-free cycle, which is awesome! My set is about 7-8 years old, so has all bells & whistles, Consumer Reports rated, on sale, etc., etc., because I am also a Yankee. Had to buy them when I bought the house & was almost more excited about having a new washer & dryer than I was about having a new house!
Okay, I have to PM you about felting.....
-
Oh, I wish I could afford a new w/d .. but I would be throwing away money .. my old ones are mismatched but both white .. I wish I had those colorful ones, red, on a pedastal!! I am still not a fan of front load washers .. I'd rather have the top load but without that thing in the middle ... I've seen them now and they have 3 things in the bottom that make the clothes agitate.
-
Oh, too bad about the Rimmmel--wally world carries it, too, btw.
I have never understoon why some people recommend going outside of the lip line---I have never seen one which looked good---except on TV. I also feel that the added color to the lip line is what makes the lips look bigger---not the natural colors. JMHO
-
Yeah, whassup with this whole notion of lining the lips outside the line? Do we really wanna look like Tammy Faye Baker????
-
Lip liner update, girls.
Oh, outside the lip line DOES NOT WORK absotively, positutely, for me. Tammy Faye is right. Ugh. OTOH, I did discover that if I line the bottom lip ONLY towards the sides where it is still lip tissue but regular skin tone instead of more pinkish lip tone, I can make my lips look fuller. The jury is still out whether I like it better than just lipstick or not.
Also, this "natural tone" lip pencil, which looks very neutral in the stick and on my hand, looks pretty orange-y on my face. I will probably buy a pink lip pencil as that would be more 'natural lip color" for me and report back on that. I have to go out today so will try to make time to stop at a bigger CVS.
Washer and dryers: Well, my dryer was mismatched from the recent decedent as the matching one s--t the bed about 15 years ago. So, it's only that old. LOL I am NOT buying a dryer until it gives up the ghost. When I do, I will go for the most energy efficient one I can find at a reasonable price.
My w/d setup is in my dry stone wall cellar, a real antique situation, so there is no cosmetic consideration. (This bringing the topic full circle to the Makeup Thread)
BTW, when I said my water was free I should also have said that I am on well water. When my waste water goes out, it goes through the septic system and is filtered by the earth and returns to the ground water naturally "purified," so I consider that to be environmentally friendly. Plus, no waste at all. It's so tubular.
Kathi, what about the felting question? Wanna play?
-
Well, I'm off to the Dermatologist tomorrow...what kind of face can money buy a post-menopausal lady these days? Any favorite treatments, anybody?Linora
-
I would go with dermabrasion and botox ..if you can afford it .. my sis does Botox and loves it. She says she even feels more relaxed!!
-
Gotta be careful of the botox. Paralyzed facial muscles do not come back. I've seen women end up looking like they have Parkinson's from the neck up. Not pretty!
I have a friend who is a post-menopausal performer (classical singer) & uses some of her estrace cream on her face & neck, with her doc's recommendation!! It's like magic! Plumps up the lines beautifully. Now, I know some docs worry about absorption of the estradiol, but it's teeny & there's even less absorption through the skin than through the mucosa (i.e. vaginal tissue) where it's usually used. I say, let's look into that!!
-
Holy crapolas! Kathi you wouldn't use that would you? On your face? I just got raked over the coals by my onco for the estrace the gyn prescribed!
Hmmmmm on the other hand...maybe i could make money on this tube i have by repackaging it as facial line disolver! :d eheheheee...seriously though...you don't use it do you? Being ER|+ and all?
-
Well, wish, I don't, but honestly my girlfriend does, with her gyn's recommendation, & it works. Why wouldn't it? It's what keeps us from looking like prunes until we hit menopause, after all.
Wish, are you on hormone therapy? Which one? I read a brief discussion here on the site about whether we should be afraid of topical estradiol & one of the doctors said the amount of estrogen that we might absorb systemically is so insignificant, it has not been found to make any difference in our recurrence risk for ER+ tumors for those of us on Tamoxifen, because Tamoxifen blocks our breast tissue from taking up that estrogen anyway. http://www.breastcancer.org/tips/intimacy/ask_expert/2008_02/question_06.jsp But for aromatase inhibitors, there's some controversy about that. One study though actually found that a little estradiol helped restore tissue response to AI's in breast tissue that had started to become resistant to the drugs, so hey, maybe it would be okay either way. http://www.breastcancer.org/treatment/hormonal/new_research/20081212b.jsp
I'm on Tamox, so what the heck?? I'd put estrogen on my face before I'd let someone shoot a toxin into my face muscles to paralyze them.
-
Thanx gals, Botox really scares me... the idea of injecting such a poisonous toxin into your skiin!! I'm one of these hyperallergic people and I've had anaphalaxis once...I don't want it again!!!!! My throat and tongue were so swollen I almost lost my airway!!!
I think I'm more for the dermabrasian or laser treatments...the kind that don't add little poisons. Paralyzed face muscles are definitely not for me. I've seen Before & After shots of women who had face surgery, and some of the women look a lot better BEFORE because they have faces with expression.
I've heard that business about putting Estrace on your face...BTW my GYN told me it absolutely would not work so I gave it up. I don't think I believe him. Maybe I'll give it another try.
I'm on Femara with very few SE's, but I wonder if it isn't making me look awfully old!! I was prescribed Estrace for another region of my body... maybe I need it on my face!!
-
Linora, if you've not been doing it, start with a vitamin A cream, possibly Renova. It's non-invasive and proven to improve the skin texture and help erase discolorations, etc. If Renova is too strong for you there are pretty strong retinol concoctions out there. I use one of them, by Environ. You start with a very mild serum and progress to stronger and stronger formulations. The strongest ones are almost as powerful as Renova. I haven't had any skin irritation issues and I'm up to the next to the strongest, C-Quence 3. http://www.dermaconcepts.com/dermaconcepts.asp I get this through my ps office.
Dermabrasion is a good option, too. If you want to try something at home, I can recommend Neutrogena's Skin Renewal system. It is a little, disposable scrubbie on a dildo-like thingie that vibrates. I use mine twice a week. Helps get rid of old skin and makes the skin more able to absorb treatment creams.
I had some Restylane last September but it really didn't make any difference I could see. I think it really depends upon how deep your facial lines are.
I know I could benefit from some Botox for my frown lines, but, like Kathi, I'm more than a little leery of it.
Gee, isn't aging fun?
-
Tina, I've already done Retin A (with dramatic results) and I have the Neutrogena dermabrasian kit. It worked great until I ran out of cream, and there's no way I can find to buy it separately without buying the whole it all over again.
I am thinking in terms of something more serious, like laser therapy or a mini-lift.
-
Hmmmm. The Neutrogena kit I am thinking of does not require any creams. The actual name is Healthy Skin Rejuvenator and here it is on the CVS site. http://www.cvs.com/CVSApp/catalog/shop_product_detail.jsp?filterBy=&skuId=438964&productId=438964&navAction=jump&navCount=3 You can usually get it for under $35.00 I see that Target has it for a little less than that.
You do have to buy refill pads but I get them at Target. The last box was about $14 for 50% more pads. http://www.cvs.com/CVSApp/catalog/shop_product_detail.jsp?filterBy=&skuId=447439&productId=447439&navAction=jump&navCount=3
RetinA is for younger skin, I have read. The Renova is in a moisturizing cream base.
The nurses in my ps's office get to be guinea pigs for treatments. One of them had some sort of serious peel and you would not believe how it tightened her skin. She looks great. There was considerable recovery time, though.
Hey, I think you should go with your dermatologist's recommendation. I only suggest these because I know they are effective for me and not too pricey. Let us know what you end up doing. We're all interested in doing whatever we can to "shovel shit against the tide," to put it bluntly.
-
Hi everyone:
Haven't posted here before since I'm retired and seldom wear makeup any more -- except for lipstick and blush. For colour that really does stay, I'm now using Revlon Colour-Stay. Stays on pretty much all day, and my lips don't dry out anymore.
Re Botox: I have a good friend who is a general surgeon (not a PS) and we discussed it. He says, once you start with the injections, you'll have to continue with them (forever, I guess) because if you stop, your skin will sag even more -- hence more wrinkles -- and who knows what effect the botulism buildup over several years will have on your body. Not enough studies have been done to absolutely guarantee it's harmless.
Now, if I could only find something to take away the wrinkles starting to appear in my neck....! Tina, would Renova work there?
Linda
-
Aging is a bitch...you know, I am ten years older than my husband and until chemo I could get away with it. But people are mistaking him for my son lately!!! Crap!! It doesn't help that he's especially young looking for his age. (He got carded last year in the grocery store, I was with him!)Anyway, I'm going to that appointment and ask that doctor to work some miracles. If he can't, than it's the Big One for me, the Surgical Face Lift.Tina, my dermabrasian kit came with a jar of abrasive cream, yours didn't?!!! It also has a little motorized face scrubber with sponges which are replaceable.
-
Linda, I think Renova can help somewhat but the neck is a very difficult area to treat even with surgery. How many times have you seen older women (and actresses) with great skin on their faces but turkey necks? It's a stinker of a problem and mostly genetically pre-programmed, I fear.
Linora, Neutrogena has several different kit products. Neutrogena Advanced Solutions At-Home Microdermabrasion System (now renamed to Neutrogena Healthy Skin Rejuvenator) used to come with a dermabrasion cream and a couple of applicator pads. Now it has everything right in the pad, no extra cream or anything, and the pads are disposable after one use. I think the refill boxes have either 12 or 14 pads in them.
If you are committed to surgery, then go for it. Not a thing wrong except the $$$ and the small risk which is very low in skilled hands. Choose your surgeon well.

OK Gals, saw my Dermatologist...I've done a little research and he has top credentials. Harvard Medical School, kudos at U. Mich., on the faculty there, lots of awards. He's black and I like him very much. He says all I need is laser resurfacing. Showed me lots of before and after pictures, the results are very, very dramatic.I've had wrinkles on my forehead since the 7th grade--he says he can get rid of all of them--COMPLETELY, and I've also noticed that my eyelids are drooping. He says that once he works on the forehead, the eyebrows will lift and so will the lids.He showed me Before and After picture of a lady in her 70s, she had lots and lots of wrinkles before and she looked ten years younger in the after picture. Then he told me the After picture was 10 years older than the before picture. Pretty amazing. The laser procedure is a new kind of laser, you only need one treatment and the results are permanent. It takes two weeks to fully recover. Then, if I still want, he can do a mini-lift.The only problem is the price. The form asked me for my social security number and I foolishly filled it in, knowing we have a very good credit rating. No one--not even the doctor--could even give me ball park info about the price until they had done their "research" (on ME!!!), and they told me it would be $5000 for the laser procedure, and another $5000 for the mini-lift. Now that seems a bit high to me.OK..I'm ready to go with the laser procedure. They could get me in in March, and I am thinking $5K is a lot, but is it bad to spend a little extra to go to someone you have a very good feeling about. I always go with my intuition. I think this man is the right guy for my face.... and I've had appointments with other doctors (long time ago) where I didn't feel this way at all.Linora
-
Wow, that's great news, Linora. Actually, 5K for a new face is not bad. I've read about these procedures and they ARE expensive. We will all be waiting to hear how you do. Good luck!
In the meantime, my copy of How Not to Look Old finally arrived at the library yesterday and I have gone through about3/4 of it. Couldn't put it down. I do have some questions, though, and don't think she has it perfectly nailed for everyone on the planet. Overall, though, lots of good suggestions.
One thing that surprised me is that she recs using lipstick or gloss one or two shades LIGHTER than your natural lips! What to all of you do? I know that dark lips are aging but thought we were supposed to be aiming for one or two shades DARKER than our own lips.
Most of my questions, though, are about fashion so I will take this up over on that thread.
-
Linora - Good luck with whatever you chose. I too, have heard that such procedures are quite expensive.
Tina - that book does create more questions than it answers, doesn't it? I go with pink lipstick - I think it is actually darker or more colorful than my own lips. ??
-
I would be worried that the doctor based your treament cost on the result of your credit rating!
$5K, even though I couldn't afford it right now, is definitely worth it for YOU! Look what you've been through, it's certainly not too much to ask. Think of a new wardrobe...
I'm sure your husband will be thrilled. He'll probably insist you don't need it, then be blown away when it's all over. You go girl! I hope you post before and after pics!
-
beth.... just a suggestion
what if we had a BC survivor weekend in one of the villas. Each person contributes a portion of that lease and you get the rebate on the other?????? Personally I could go, would be a great Birthday present but airfare is waaaaaay too much. We even have a chatter in Jamaica.... Raggaelady
On the agenda, foods to avoid if you are est/prog positive, and foods to avoid if you are negative.
How has cancer changed my outlook on life..... journaling, meditation
We could have aroma therapy based on the flowers available.
-
We bought new suitcases from TravelSmith, lightest possible, with a 100 pockets, to fit into bin.
I think my range of motion will let me get up there now, so I'll start packing! Since I really don't need to wear a bra, that should save some space, along with lots of makeup samples!
-
I have been meaning to post this for a while:
dh has a beauty secret! Please don't bash us... he's a rough and tough dude... chain saw slinging type o' guy.... but he swears by vinegar as a natural way to reduce and prevent wrinkles! This is SO FUNNY - he recently went to Home Depot and purchased a spray bottle - filled it with water and vinegar and sprays it on his face daily... before he goes into the shower! lol I know... it sounds weird... BUT - when we travel to resorts that have SPAS - I always talk him into having a facial or massage or whatever. Every time he has had a facial - he has been told that he has very few wrinkles for his age....(he's 51). Soooooooooo... just wondering if you have ever heard of this. Please don't think my dh is a weirdo... lol
-
Is he using it as an exfolient? I'd think it would be acidic. Also, if it's just as he's going into the shower, how does it help? Maybe he's just a happy guy....
