Make-up hints

the free cosmetics is nationwide, as far as I know. It was on the Nashville, TN news.

M natural hair color is blonde, rather drab now~~~from what I can see of the roots! I use L'Oreal Light Auburn as my base color and for touch-ups. My haircutter at Aveda then gives me both highlight$ and lowlight$ 2 or 3 times a year. I mark the bottles into thirds; my touch-ups cost a few dollars instead of lots of dollars, and I can do them at my own convenience!
-
OK, question: I have been a million shades of red over my life, and have a promise from my hairdresser that i'll never be one of the old ladies with awful looking dyed hair when I get in my 70's.
So what is the thought in the big city about a head of hair with no high or low light$? I do touch up my grey mousey roots beween colors and trims.
Anyway, what's the scoop?
-
I think the differing highlights give a more natural look to any haircolor. That is always a big part of the makeover show hairdos! I will scrimp elsewhere to afford a good haircut and highlights~~~and I will never be gray. (I keep checking; so far, so good!)
However, if your color looks good as is, don't worry until the far, far, faraway day that you are in your 70's!
-
Thanks, Daff, appreciate the input. I'll be seventy in 4.5 years!!! Yes, the picture is a few years old. LOL
-
Hey Iodine...you know, I don't think I've ever known what my haircolor past middle school...what I shame because I think it would have been very pretty. But I think I have an answer to your question. Last time I got my hair cut, I complained that I have to do my roots every three weeks...they responded...then you are doing them too dark. So I moved up to dark ash blonde, now I am medium ash blond. What you do is keep your hair colored in a light shade and get lowlights in a darker shade...looks very pretty & natural and if the light shade is close to your own gray shade it won't grow out noticeably.

My mom had dark, practically jet black hair her whole life. She wore a cute pixie crew cut, and it always looked great. As she got older, dark hair looked way too harsh, and when she started to gray, she started going lighter and lighter with her hair, until she was eventually blond. You would never know she didn't always have very light hair, and it looks great on her. She has several different colors of high and lowlights, and I don't think it looks "natural" so to speak, but it covers her gray and it looks fantastic.
Personally, until recently, I liked the look of one color hair, that had a lot of shine to it. However, as you start to go gray, adding highlights/lowlights will help eliminate the gray, while adding dimension, and a look a texture to your hair. If you have thin hair, putting the right high or lowlights in, could make a huge difference.
I love the highlights I put in my hair, but I'm actually much happier with the cut. For me, taking up all the layers added all the dimension I need, and gave me a fresh look. I probably won't touch the color up until the summer time.
I think if you are going to highlight for the first time, it's important to tell your colorist to make the strands as thin, and natural looking as possible, and DON'T even let anyone pull your hair through a cap!!! I can't even believe there are still some places that use this old, outdated technique.
-
Ouch! I remember being stabbed with that cap technique in the old days. Owie! Torture.
My hair has some gray, of course, but not enough to be attractive about it. LOL My approach to color pre chemo was to use a semi-permanent color in a light ash blond so that only the gray "took" the color. Of course, the whole shebang was treated but you could only tell on the lighter (gray) hairs.
After chemo, my hairdresser was SUPPOSED to use a semi-permanent, without ammonia color, but he tricked me.........I could smell it. I stopped that by going back to doing it myself at home and I'm using my old scheme of only coloring the gray. It's slowly getting back to normal. You can definitely see the lighter hairs and, until it starts to wash out after a few weeks, they look blonde, not gray. I *do* have to let it process for the 45 minutes, though, or it won't color properly.
I figure that by the time I am all gray, I will also be all blonde! And it looks so natural.

RE: Free Item
You can get a free cosmetic item at various dept. stores. Lancome, Estee Lauder, Clinique, etc. I just got back from Macy's with a free mascara, but the supplies are quickly dwindling.

Raye:
Do you have to show some proof that you bought an item from them before ?
-
No, no proof of purchase necessary.
LOL, I've not seen my real color since I was about 19---been red (in some shade)since then. Came home on break with it red and Dad sent me back to school! Said I could come home when I was back to my natural color.. dishwater blonde!
I was meant to be a red head and even my dh when we were planned our married budget was suprised when I told him I colored my hair.
Talked with my hairdresser and we decided against the "lights". I swim at least 3xwk. and the clorine is tough on my color (even tho I saturate it with condition and water before I get in). Then when I color, I have to do the whole head and the roots, so "lights" are not in my future.
Appreciate your input and help.

Ladies, I have become aware that lipstick does not agree with my lips. About the only things I can use are Aveeno lip balm and Smashbox's O-Gloss and LipFusion. Any actual lipstick, many brands tried, dry my lips out immediately, like one day's application. Does anyone know what the culprit is? Any suggestions of brands that might be okay? How about colored glosses in general? I would like a little color now and then but hate to keep wasting money on stuff I cannot use.
-
I have same problem, haven't found any good solution; I have recently tried a "natural" lipstick, such as found in Whole Foods. Its ok but not great. I have been using Bobbie Brown lip balm alone or under anything I try in an effort to be kind to my lips.Burts Bees has lip chap stick that is pretty good- I will have to see which one, and it has a little color in it. For now its the natural look.
-
I've been using LypSyl lip products lately (find in CVS) similiar to the stained burts bees, but makes my lips feel so much better.
There's a new creme gloss lip stick/gloss combo that I just saw a commercial for, and now I'm kicking myself that I can't remember which brand-- again another drugstore brand.
I would definitely avoid any of the long lasting lipsticks, b/c they are drying. I would go for the ones that promote moistue and conditioners in them. I'm not so much of a lipstick girl as a gloss girl, which can be very drying too.
-
If you play around a bit, you can use a chap stick, burts balm and add a coat of your favorite lipstick on top. It will not last a long time, but it moisturizes and you get some color.
-
Tina, I've had good luck with Neutrogena lipstick when you can find it & with L'Oreal, which is very moist. I second what Beth says. Never get those long-lasting types. Those are dry to begin with, which is why they stay on so long -- more wax I think so they go on like mortar!!! Ick! Burt's bees makes some nice tinted stuff, too, as Beth mentions.
-
I went to a "Look Good, Feel Better" workshop last week and got about $350 worth of cosmetic products all FREE! Lancome, Olay, Vichy, etc.
Worth the 2 hour time frame and happened to be on my day off! Didn't learn anything about applying make-up as I've been doing it for so long, but was nice to get the free box of stuff!
-
OMG Yes to the LGFB workshop! We need to make sure every woman knows about this. Thanks for reminding us. Let's spread the word.
I've used the Burt's Bees glosses and they are pretty good. I'd forgotten about those. However, I will look for the LypSyl stuff at CVS.
-
They have a separate site from the ACS I think it's www.lookgoodfeelbetter.org
-
I use Car-mex on my lips ..... night, morning, middle of day .... lipstick before I rush out the door!
-
unfortunate thing about LGFB is that they will only work w/women in what they call "active treatment" which seems to be surgery, radiation and chemo only. Tried to set up apt and they gave me really hard time even tho I am (and will always be) in active treatment (stage 4 hormonal therapy!) simply because I was not in chemo, surgery, rad---I apparently was only pretending that I am cancer patient. Before I called. I had really hoped they might have some make up skin care advice since my skin went wonky once onc started me on Lupron and Fermara- talk about menopause on steroids! Most disappointing.
I find the Burts Bees replenishing chap stick w/pomegranet pretty good.
-
I found that Lancome puts an exfoliater in their lipstick, and carmex makes my lips peel, that's why folks get so "addicted" to them.
MAC has a great tinted lip conditioner. and I use MAC longlasting pro lip color---it's the only one of the longlasting that doesn't dry my lips. Revlon made a good one too a while back.
Always wear lip liner, too a couple of shades darker than your lip color and you'll have color on your lips. I color in my lips with is sometimes and then add a little gloss. Stays lots longer.
-
EWB, I feel bad you weren't allowed to go to the "party". I just phoned up and booked myself. They didn't even ask about my cancer! When I showed up without breasts it was pretty obvious, but I'm not going through any treatment. No drugs, chemo or rads! I felt I deserved the workshop and so do you!
I'd have a little chit-chat with the commitee on letting you go.
-
Barbe- I agree, but I get tired of having to explain yes I have stage 4 terminal cancer, no it can't be cured, no I haven't had surgery, rads or chemo, yes I really do have cancer, and yes its serious, no I did'nt have surgery cause the cancer had already spread, yes I have my hair and breasts are intact, I will need to be in treatment for the rest of my life- they are trying to extend it as long as possible, no we're holding off on chemo until everything else stops working.........
And this is with cancer people, you'd think they'd know and understand!! Maybe another day when I have more energy.
Be Well all

Dotti, I've never worn lipliner because I have a very small mouth and it would only accentuate that. Plus, my lip color has never bled. I was just checking sephora, though, and saw a product that interested me: Kevin Aucoin Flesh Tone Lip Pencil. It's supposed to enable you to visually enlarge your lips without it being obvious as it is with a color lip pencil/liner. I wonder if that might work for me. At $25 it's a gamble that I'm not sure I want to take, though. Maybe I will go shopping soon and visit a sephora store and try the sample there if they have one. Are those disinfectant things they use on products really effective? It scares me to put something on my lips that have seen others...........What do you think?
Will also take a look at that MAC tinted lip conditioner.
I dug out my Burt's Bees LipShimmer yesterday and have been using it. It does not seem to irritate or dry my lips so far, only it's kind of heavy. Will be looking for that LypSyl stuff this weekend at CVS.
It's expensive to be a woman.
-
EWB- I am shocked that LGFB did not let you participate. That is outrageous.... we can talk more about it later today when I see you....
Tina- if you try the Kevin Aucoin stuff PLEASE let me know if you like it... I'm very interested.
-
I'm sorry they wouldn't take you EWb,to me, that's just inexcusable. To be honest, i wasn't all that impressed with the group here. It was slambam program to say the least. Mostly I think to drum up business for them.
And after wards, when I tried to purchase the products I received, MOST if not all were no longer being made. So, I guess this is where they drop old makeup they can't sell. The shades, or even type is no longer made, so it gets donated to these type of programs. Made it a cheap deal was not my idea of helpful.

-
As one of the 8 new faces on the Look Good, Feel Better video, I am OUTRAGED that they would not let you participate. We did the video the end of July and it has finally been released for use throughout the USA. If you want, pm me and I will make a personal complaint for you. The website does not have us "new" make over gals on it as yet.
The session I attended had one women with a full head of hair and also in need of make up tips. The website does give lots of make up hints. The free cosmetics, full size, not samples, are great, and a couple of exchanged lip sticks since the color did not suit us.
One hint that I use all the time now - use lipliner over ALL of your lips. it stays longer than lipstick or gloss, then put gloss or lipstick over it.
-
I would also email from the website and let the "staff" know how you were treated.
-
WAIT TINA!! I'd Never blow that much on a lipliner. I use a drug store brand that you don't even have to sharpen and have several different colors---all about $3-4 bucks --max. It's Rimmel and the stuff is great---not too dry so it goes on well and not greasy to slide off.
I find that a lipliner makes my lips look larger--just don;t use the dark colors. I do have one that almost matches my lips and do as lefty suggests: put it on all over my lips, after lining of course, and then top with gloss. I regularly us just a med. coral color with various lip colors and it does the job. According to the lip color, it either makes the color darker or lighter. Just play with it some and see how you like it.
