Positive Obama thread

Mad- The way I look at things, anything we do to others in the name of "preventing terrorism" is fair game for others to do if they capture one of our citizens. I'm sure there are countries who think our actions are terroristic, so from their perspective the "harsh treatment" is warranted. The USA likes to act as if we are a moral authority, so we need to act like one when it comes to human rights. I doubt people with loved ones in the armed services or even those who engaged in torture would want what they did to be done to their kids or spouses. You are so rights about the facts leading others. I forget the guy's name, but he was in charge of interrogating Sadaam Huessin and he talked about how he gained Sadaam's trust and eventually got the information he wanted. I don't think Bush and Cheney are sadists. I think they really believe their own rhetoric about how torturing is a good tool, but I also think, like the Iraq war, they had a theory and searched for evidence to support it, rather than searching for evidence and seeing where that lead.
I'm not sure I agree with the retaking of the oath. Obama was president at noon, 5 minutes before he took the oath. For months conspiracy theorists on the right have been saying, "JUMP." and insisting Obama say, "how high". They demanded to see his birth certificate. College transcripts. Insisted he prove he was really a citizen. Insisted he prove he wasn't muslim (so much for freedom of religion) and I don't think they're going to stop with this. I hope retaking the oath a harbinger of things to come from the fringe on the right,.
laura- well said
I saw Hillary's warm welcome this morning. That was a nice way to start. There was one guy just to her right who didn't seem to be smiling or clapping though, I wonder who he was.
Justanna, I agree with you about considering different options and points of view. That's why it's important to get news from as many different sources as possible to be as well rounded on an issue. I however, refuse to listen to the Rush Limbaugh types. To me that's akin to listening to the skinhead's or KKK's point of views about minorities. I'll read an article about it, but you'll never catch me going to one of them as authorities on what the other side thinks. I consider people to be trolls if they come onto a thread specifically to cause trouble. I would never go on the respectful republican thread and post negative things about their candidate/politicians/points of view because I know that would cause problems. That would be troll like behavior. I wouldn't go over there and pretend to befriend someone, just to talk behind her back or send nasty PMs about her. That would be troll like behavior. Live and let live. Life is too short to play tit for tat or get caught up in negativity with someone I either don't like or don't respect. That's what the ignore button is for, in my opinion.

Mad ~ I see your point about the sleep depravation...and the others points as well. I just have a different opinion on what classifies and believe we have the ability to weed out the false intel. It's never easy trying to get the information you need without crossing the lines too. I would hope our governement sticks to the diplomatic channels Obama has choosen and they work better for us. I dispise that Gitmo ever even existed. Many Americans abroad are held captive with no right to a fair trail and I hate that our government stooped to that level. I believe Obama is going to help us get to a new age of PEACE and PROSPERITY...
Thank you for letting me voice my opinion...even though you clearly disagree!

Yep Mad the GOPis having a struggle finding itself these days trying to remain a viable national party, Rep Mike Pence said social issues like the sanctity of marriage will remain the backbone of the Republican party...RepRep Eric Cantor said the Republican party has to stop doing things the way we have always done them.
Until the Repub party decides what it stands for, they will remain on the outside looking in...and if the Repubs want to remain a regional party of the South, a party of mostly old white Americans, "That One" and more Dems will continue to be elected.I love Bush for providing the political toxicity that has created the mess. Major Props to President Bush!
Cheney isn't as happy with Bush as I am, he says Bush should have pardoned Scooter.
I never thought I would see the day that I was happier with Bush than Dick Cheney! rotflol
It was great to see Hillary getting to work today, looks like Geithner will be sitting in his office chair real soon now...
Amy - I so agree with the Live and Let Live mantra, especially on the internet. I made a pact with myself years ago that I would never post words about or to someone that I would not say in real life, it works well for me. Nasty pms? Nah, I sure hope not. I hope people especially BC sisters are better than that. Oiy Vey.
Have a good day ladies .....Onward and Upward.

Very Funny...I would say it in real life...

I agree with you Amy about these 2 and Rumsfeld believing their own rhetoric about torture as a tool. It takes me right back to the history of slavery in this country. How southern males in power believed that humiliation and degradation of slaves was a tool to get them to "cooperate." The similarities of treatment are that the slaves and the terrorists are dark skinned--treated as less than human, in fact the slaves were looked at as dumb as animals. So, what we have are men in this country who continue to treat dark skinned people from certain countries as terrorists and in order to get the evidence they need, they need to treat them with torture. It's that "conditioning" many have grown up with and do not understand that they are racist in their reactions to certain groups of people. It's amazing that these 3 men felt they had the right to bypass the Geneva Convention; and in the process have put the citizens of the USA in peril--either with some other terrorist activity or by travel to other parts of the world. In the past 8 years, these men have governed this country through warmongering and attempting to put fear into the hearts of our citizens. I am hopeful and encouraged by President Obama's policies and on seeing him in action for 1 day. I believe that Day 1 will be the example he sets for every day of his term in office. And I don't think he will spend 1/3 of his term "on vacation," as the recent president did!
No torture, no waterboarding, and no treatment of others except how we would like to be treated and how we want our family members and dear friends to be treated. It's time to put down the swords and catch the flies with honey instead of vinegar. Onward and upward.
Woooooooooo-hooooooooooooo!!

Okay I am just amazed at how hateful some peolpe are! I was reading that Rush BIMBO, said that he hopes that President Obama fails. So let me get this right, you are hoping that the president of the country that you live in FAILS??!! HUH?? We finally have a chance to change things and to be well liked by the rest of the world because as much as the other side hates to admit, we are NOT alone in the world and the way we are preceived by the rest of the world and NATO is important. I am hoping President Obama thrives and moves us into a brighter day and a new era!
Oh no here it goes again, its like I cant control it......WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

laura --
Thank you for being part of the most open inauguration in our nation's history.
As we begin the work of remaking America, we must draw on the common hopes that brought us together this week.
I'm counting on you to keep the spirit of unity and service alive.
You can visit http://www.pic2009.org/whitehouse to learn about our plans to bring change to America, and how you can get involved in the work ahead.
We face many challenges. But we face them as one nation.
And we have seen, time and time again, that there are no limits to what we can accomplish when we stand together.
Our journey is just beginning.
Thank you for all you do,
President Barack Obama

bygrace,
Slaves were brought to this country to work, and in spite of how wrong the whole concept was, and the horrendous treatment they received, they and their children and succeeding generations worked hard to help make this country the great place that it is today.
To compare them to terrorists who come to this country to try to destroy it is just beyond disrespectful of an entire race of people.
-
mad - i only hope that everyone that lives by the "do on to others" words
walk the walk ....
i have lots of hope these days
-
the slaves and the terrorists are dark skinned--treated as less than human
what we have are men in this country who continue to treat dark skinned people from certain countries as terrorists
She doesn't differentiate between people whose actions have caused them to be targeted as terrorists or potential terrorists (just cause they got caught before they were successful), and people who simply have dark skin. I find that a huge dis-service to those who have dark skin, but are not terrorists.
-
Madalyn- I'm sure you are right about what grace meant. She used to run diversity training workshops and is one of the "experts" in the field. Sometimes I think folks on here are on "gotcha" lookout, hoping to pounce on anything they can, and even trying to trip others up. I've exchanged several emails with her on diversity issues and prejudice. I am against any type of racial profiling. Someone once said that we can judge a society by how it treats it's weakest citizens, I think that applies not only to "weakest" but also to minority and disenfranchised as well.
-
Madalyn,
Those are your words, not mine, and certainly not my sentiments.
What I'm saying is that just because some of the people who have been accused of being terrorists have dark skin, comparing them with slaves is like comparing apples and rocks... they are fundamentally different.

Ladies...not again!!! What is with people coming on here to post crazy notions and ideas? We have just seen one of the most monumental occasions in the history of this country, and certainly in our time!! Stop slinging the crap around!!! I know all of the Obama Ladies are on a real high right now, along with most of the country!! I'm going to keep it that way. I went to BarackObama.com this morning to see what ideas I might get to volunteer. I found a great site in my area and have already signed up to volunteer to feed the elderly. I'm going to try a few different things and see what I like doing. But I'm taking our Presidents call for action to heart. So, those of you that have nothing better to do than come on here with comments that don't even make sense, and I personally wonder what joy you get from posting them, maybe you want to look what you can do in your own community and be "PRO ACTIVE." There's a thought!!!
I'm with you Tracy..........WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
-
Ladies, I could not read all your post because, and I'm not saying this to be argumentative, hateful, mean, negative, troll-like, a drama queen, ignorant, toxic or whatever adjective there is. The posts are make me literally sick.
I did not post that video to cause a disturbances. I admire Wintley Phipps and I thought you may enjoy learning a little about him. I thought his little lesson on how Negro spiriturals was interesting. His vocals are amazing. I posted both links..one from a Gaither gathering and one from the National Prayer Service.
As far as the comments in italics that was from the person who actually posted the video from the Gaither gathering. I suppose people attacked for whatever reason for posting the video and he was defending himself by saying if you knew him you would know he's anything BUT racist.
Like I said. I did not come here to cause trouble. I really and truly posted the video with comments because I thought some of you would enjoy it. Thanks Bonnie and Justanna for you sweet replies.
Sorry that there are a few narrow-minded people in this world. I think the attack dog comes out when she/they see Shirley Hughes' name. So, so sorry. I'm sure President Obama would be very proud of you. BTW, did you see the look on President Obama's face with Biden made fun of Roberts for screwing up the oath..did you see him tap Biden on the elbow, or was it his shoulders? President Obama wanted NO negativity.
Carry on ladies.
Shirley

Bonnie, the reason I C&Ped the fella's words was because he was amazed at how people saw him as been racist when he posted Wintley Phipps video. When someone assumes one is a racist without even knowing them it's just wrong. I suppose his words struck a cord with me because it's been insinutated by some on this thead that I am a racist and just don't know it.

OK, I really want to clarify what Rush Limbaugh said regarding 's success. He said that he wanted Obama to fail if he started implementing socialist polices that expand government and limit individuals. He then said that if Obama goes the Reagan route and cuts taxes and help private sector and not the government to get new jobs, then he would hope Obama succeeds.
I also don't want socialism to succeed and am sure that a lot of Americans feel the same way.
As Reagan said in his inaugural speech: "The government is not the solution to the problem, the government is the problem".
-
Sorry PZL but I am not a fan of Rush AT ALL!! President Obama has never been one to limit individuals, and if Rush knew ANYTHING about his proven track record when he first came to Chicago he may have thought twice before he opened his mouth. HMMMM I wonder if he would have said the same of, oh i dont know........ John Mccain. Nope I think not.

-
Tracey......you look awesome!!!!!!!!!! I'm going to check out that site a little more in depth later on, thank you for sharing it!!!!!! And I am not going to let anyone bring me off of this cloud!! I'm right up there with you! :-)
As far as the idiot "Rush" is concerned...who gives a crap what he says!!! He's a hate monger. I highly doubt any of us Obama supporters give a rats ass what rush thinks of anything!!!
If we actually sticked to the topic of this thread, it would be so nice!!!!
President Obama '09...it's here and its AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHOOOOHOOOOOOOOOO!
-
Tracey,
The socialism is all about limiting individuals in favor of the government. So if Obama does not go for socialist polices, I would be very happy. But a big chunk of the bailout seem to be going to the government and not a private sector and that worries me. But of course we haven't seen the final proposal so I will definitely reserve my judgment on this.
Reagan was my favorite president and he also inherited ta ough economy from Carter: high unemployment and hyperinflation. He believed that the best thing the government could do was to remove roadblocks for Americans so they can prosper.
It goes without saying that we all want this nightmarish economy to find its footing. The question is whether the solution will be temporary and lead us to problems much worse than we have today.
-
PZL, I am not trying to be ugly but I fully understand what socialism is. I do not feel like President Obama will go back on his word to the residents of the US. I dont even know why I brought up something spoken out of the mouth of a "hate monger" such as Rush. Please forget I ever breathed his name.
Little G, Thanks for the AWESOME compliment!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Here's to keepin up the positive energy WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

you got that right tracey - it is a new day, day two actually, and the positive actions by our president are energizing the country with hope. there will be many naysayers, the vocal minority but they are not going to stop us. the growing majority of americans have traded in their fear for hope and it is nothing but up from here.
okay another round of:
Here's to keepin up the positive energy WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

serene - happy trails to you, congrats on getting back to life and moving on. never forget...

PatMom,
I was comparing how white people (like Bush & Cheney) don't really see dark skinned people as strong, intelligent, warm human beings. The white men that ran this country in the 1700-1800s did the same thing--they treated dark skinned people with little thought to any humanity for these people.
Torture of Gitmo detainees is basically the same type of treatment. Cheney, Rumsfeld, and now we know Bush (cuz he admitted it on national TV) used torture techniques that are illegal according to the Geneva Conventions. It is my opinion (which I am entitled to) that these men behaved like the white plantation owners in the South in the 1700s-1800s by authorizing treatment of the Gitmo detainees that was similar to plantation owners--and their behavior demonstrates that they do not see these suspected terrorists with dark skin as human beings (slaves were seen that way also). You may not agree with me and that is your right to your opinion.
I was not comparing slaves to Gitmo detainees treatment of us--I was distinctly and clearly saying that dark skinned people are often treated more inequitably than other groups.
If you research, you will find that a number of studies have been done just on housing in the US--both purchasing and renting. Many owners of property will not rent to dark skinned people--they will tell them the place is already rented. I have talked to a number of women, light skinned to dark skinned, who will graciously explain how differently they are treated.
In the 1920s in Harlem there were many, many black people. There were also authors' and artists' movements (some wrote novels based on their experiences in the US)--and it was common for light skinned people to "pass" in society. They often found they were not treated well in either group--the very light and the very dark. Skin color is more important in how people are treated by some people in this country. It really is race in a much more covert fashion. I am not suggesting or saying that anyone on this board is that way. I have stated my knowledge about race, gender and class in this country because I spent 4 years studying these specific groups in relationship to feminism and feminist theory. When I talk about skin color, race, etc on this thread (or other threads I have participated in, I relate what I learned during that time and the first hand research I did. I found this fascinating and enjoy sharing my knowledge with others.
I hope this clears up any questions that you and /or others on this thread might have. I am leaving this board, so I will not be here to answer any more questions about my opinions stated here.
Onward & Upward--when we give a hand up to those around us, we raise ourselves up also!
And to my dear Obama fan friends on this thread--I too think it is time to turn out the lights and move on--I'll see you in other places, I'm sure.
-
Well..I think we need to stay positive and who ever wants to do that, should continue to post. Who ever dosn't want to do that...don't. Very simple! I finally, after 8 years of crap piled on us, see the light at the end of the tunnel!! I think things are already better and only after 2 days!! Imagine the possibilities!!!!! So.....I'm staying tuned in!!!!
President Obama!!!! WOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

BTW Laura...is that you in the picture??

Little G,
Im with you I like coming to this thread along with about 5 other threads that I go to. Its nice to be among smart women with many different expressed opinions. So I will continue to drop in and see whats going on. People dont always agree but it's okay. I for one am sooooooo happy about the new positive direction this country will now take as a result of our new president that I must continue to talk about it!! Best wishes to all who are closing this book, hope to catch you on another thread.
