what a most wonderful day, Obama ladies..and now our work begins...what a wonderful moment in history, it was fantastic sharing the experience with many of you chatting...:)

serene - what a coup for j crew dressing sasha and malia, good for them. beautiful girls and phew they approved of dad's speech.

grace - i too am looking to give some time in my community, i have a few ideas of what i want to do and will keep you posted as i find my way in figuring out how i can give back a little more.

i am also excited about our new approach around the world, i was thrilled to hear our president's words:

To those leaders around the globe who seek to sow conflict, or blame their society's ills on the West - know that your people will judge you on what you can build, not what you destroy. To those who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent, know that you are on the wrong side of history; but that we will extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist.

truly a breath of fresh air. very different from the outgoing administration's shock and awe.

Laura, that was my favorite line from the speech too.  Unclench your fist.  The man knows how to convey meaning through concrete image.

I loved Michelle's ball dress and the fact that she chose a young designer.  And anyone who can quote Fred Astaire is A-OK in my book (Obama's line that Michelle does everything he does, but in heels, backward).

Obama mentioned this website, for anyone who wants some ideas on how to serve:

Thanks for sharing a very special day.

so true g...  margaret and helen, my very favorite little ole ladies had a great take on the whole thing. helen in texas is 82 and doesn't hold back, margaret in maine has been her best friend for sixty years. love these ladies, definitely worth the read from time to time...

...Yesterday, I tuned into Rush Limbaugh as I sometimes do.   It was funny at first because it sounded like he would explode trying to understand why everyone was so excited about Barack Obama's inauguration - or as he called it, the immaculation of the messiah.  It was funny at first but then he said this: The only reason this is such a big deal is because Obama's Daddy was black.   So I turned Rush off for the last time.  He like so many others has now become a relic from the last century....

    Yes. We did.

Laura......thank's for posting that!!  I think Rush is going down in a big ball of fire.  Truly a "relic" from the last century.  He spews nothing but hate and anger.  He's a very mean and nasty person.  No good can come of him, or ever has.  I hope anyone who has or is still listening to him takes the advice of these ladies and does the same!

New day!!!!!!!  I'm already checking places where I can give some extra time wisely, along with my kids.  I'm taking heed the call to service as I know many of us are!!!

While we were all partying and chatting the NEW administration of President Obama got right to work.

My understanding is Rahm Emanuel left the presidential swearing in ceremony immediately after President Obama took the oath and went back to his WH office to send out a memo to ALL departments to put a HOLD on all last minute regulations from the previous president...during the next 120 days they will be reviewed.

    ....................

Obama takes first step toward closing Guantanamo Bay

True to his word, President Barack Obama has taken the first step to closing the infamous prison at Guantanamo Bay, asking military prosecutors to suspend legal proceedings for 120 days.

A military judge agreed to suspend one case immediately Wednesday morning, and the fate of other cases are expected to be determined quickly.

G- yesterday was so special .I still think election night was my best day, 2nd only to the inauguration. The spontaneous burst of joy at the announcement was something I will never forget. I cried more tears of joy that night.

Did you guys hear NO ARRESTS IN DC YESTERDAY. How's that for the best america has to offer, with the best man to take the job at this precarious time.  Way to go Obama supporters!

I have to say, chatters, we  spot on singing na-na-na-na  na-na-na-na hey-hey-hey goodbye even before the crowds did so yesterday. I felt a tiny bit bad for the public humiliation for the Bush daughters, it's not their fault their father is so unpopular and they;ve been so gracious to the Obama girls. I have to give Bush some credit for being welcoming to the Obamas, even though that welcome didn't extend to Blair house so the kids didn't have to move 3 times in a month. I feel  sorry for Texans having him back, but they probably won't see much of him.

Did you  hear that a female muslim leader is going to be heading the ecumenical religious services today? A rabbi will also be there. I wish they were included yesterday, but better late than never.

I hope Gietner gets confirmed today. Wall Street needs the assurance. I had to laugh when, just as I predicted, the fringe of the right blame Obama for the loss on the Dow yesterday as if the last 3 months hadn't happened on the dow, there wasn't bad news on the banking front monday,. and the economy was thriving before he was confirmed.

I was thrilled to hear about the executive order about Gitmo! Let's bring back habeas corpus, get these prisoners either released or tried as criminals and hope for the ones we release, we haven';t created terrorist sentiments by our treatment. No more torture. No matter what. No "harsh interogation techniques". Time for interrogation techniques that work-- asking questions in a respectful, diplomatic way. I am embarrassed at what was done in the name of "terror", most of all the humiliation of the hostages which is particularly anti Muslim.

I love how the Obama family interact with each other with love and a bit of humor. You can just tell they have so much respect for each other.  On the purely superficial front, aside from the Kennedys, I can't think of another more attractive presidential couple.

    It's a New Day :).

amy - you were kidding right?

<<the fringe of the right blame Obama for the loss on the Dow yesterday>>

that is hilarious...what?.. investors woke up and suddenly realized Obama was going to be President and tanked the market? tooooooooooo funny. they must have missed all the bank news and the investor fears that we need to nationalize some big banking names thus wiping out stockholders. crazy stuff, i haven't seen that one.

personally  i can only imagine the pain the rabid right is feeling these days with all the joy in america and all over the world as we replace fear with hope.

its okay, we will carry them along as we move onward and upward....

from my list of things to do for my country:

i am going to do my part to reach across the isle and do everything i can to be sure the gop has  a palin/bachmann ticket in 2012.Laughing   run sarah run! woooooooohoo!

work to be sure the abundance of evidence that  george bush and dick cheney committed war crimes leads to their prosecution.

peg - i am still working on my community to do list, can't wait to compare down the line!

    have a great day, ladies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

we did it! now we are going to do it! woooooooooooohooooooooo!

Watching television the day after the inaug...has been fun.  I'm already liking what I'm seeing like putting a freeze on all cabinet members salaries.  Hate the drama that is going on with Hillary and Geitner and hoping this will al get resolved so Obama can move forward with his team.

I'm not a fan of Rush Limbaugh but I just heard on the news he has said he hopes Obama fails.   This is not a nice man.  I'm relieved Bush is gone and loved the na na na song in chat yesterday.

    WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Laura- I wish I was kidding about those blaming Obama for the dow. I wonder since it went up today almost as much as it went down yesterday they have a new reason against him.  You crack me up-- Palin/Bachmann- two more frightening women never entered the world arena before. I always thought Palin/Joe the fake taxevading plumber turned pretend war correspondent would make a distasteful team, but you've probably found an even worse one. Bachmann will probably be way too easy trying to figure our which members of congress are anti-american and which are pro-american LOL. Minnesota- ya done good with Franken, how could you let Bachmann be reelected?

Peg- Glad to see you posting here. If Rush hopes Obama fails, than I guess even if he wears a flag pin he's anti American-- but we already knew that. I love how some of the repugs (the kook fringe of the party not the majority) for 8 years called those of us who protested Bush anti American and tried to insinuate that we were somehow less patriotic than them. We never wanted Bush to fail, we wanted him to succeed and help our country in an honorable and equitable way that would make us proud to call him president. I think saying Rush is not a nice man is an understatement add Ann Coulter, Rick Warren,  Jesse Helms, Jerry Falwell, Glenn Beck and others to the list (fortunately a few of them are no longer here to spread hate).

Mad- I'm glad you mentioned Jill Biden. I kept forgetting to say how gorgeous she also looked. I relate more to her style of dress because we're similar body frames and I could never pull off some of the styles Michelle wears so elegantly. I love how the press is using her rightful title, Dr. Biden rather than how some professionals are called Mrs. or Ms. no matter what their title.  She said she was going to continue teaching. I wonder if she'll be taking the Amtrak this time, to Wilmington and back to DC, the way Joe did the opposite direction for 30 years. I love the "wise owl" metaphor. I'll bet Obama will allow pictures to be taken of coffins especially if the families want them and not try to hide the reality of war.

People- we have taken our country back and it feels so good.

    Hi Obama Ladies,

Lots of good information Amy & Laura!!  Laura..I LOVE that pic of President Obama at his desk!!  He is blowing doors off of that place!!!!!!!!  I was not surprised to hear the repubs blame the low market results on him.  Sad people.  Yeah..I guess they haven't noticed what's been going on for about 3 years now with the recession.  Well..as you say Laura..onward and upward!!!  I was listening to the news today and when they said "President Obama" I was so thrilled!!!!!!!  He is incredible!!!!!!! And only on his first day!!!!  Mad...I agree that both woman looked great last night, as did their men!!!  Peg...rush is pure evil with a following that i liken to the people that beat up the Frankenstein monster..you know....torches, big sticks, stones.  That's my vision of people that would follow a man so full of hate.  To bad for him. He needs to hop in the copter with the rest of the dinosaurs.  We are on a new page now.   PRESIDENT OBAMA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Before you ignore me please watch this video.  This man sang at the National Prayer Service this morning in case you didn't catch it.  His name is Wintley Phipps. He's fantastic!  He talks about Black Spirituals ...just listen.  He does his own talking and singing on this video from YouTube.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DMF_24cQqT0

I'm am C&Ping what the person who posted this video said.  See how people take things out of context?  Any empahsis is mine.

NOTE TO ALL VIEWERS: many of you have missunderstood what he said. He did NOT say an african american wrote the words to amazing grace. He never argued that John Newton was not an englishmen, so stop pointing it out! He just said that John Newton was a slave trader and he was. Most of you are so concentrated on black and white, you are missing the point of the whole video!! He is trying to send out a message that God intended for all of us to be united. Weather you agree with the details or not, the message he is trying to send is a good one. So lighten up and take the hint!!

When I posted this video, I had absolutely no idea how popular it would become.

Anyone who thinks my intention is to "misinform" or to show any disregard to any race or culture obviously knows nothing about me.

This is a great video, and I love wintley phipps and so I decided to share. I did not expect it to be so huge!!

Of course we all agree that John Newton was in fact a slave trader. Thats the whole point. GRACE. That God can change the hardest of hearts within time if they'll listen. All the other stuff, is just stuff.

As far as not posting most of the ones that try to "correct" his views, it was simply to not cause a riot, the few times I have posted negative comments it caused a big debate between that person and my subscribers and especially considering this video has become so popular and so many people watch it, I wanted to avoid a big, long debate. That's it. So please dont be unkind to me and make allegations about my intentions to my subscribers when you are 100% percent wrong about me. I am anything but racist and I dont see how me posting this video would make me a racist, me posting this video means that i'm for unity between races. I have gotten into big long arguements with people multiple times because they made a racist remark. I am the opposite of racist. So please stop saying that because it's just not true and it hurts my feelings.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And this is Wintley Phipps this morning at the National Prayer Service.  How anyone had a dry eye in that service this morning I cannot understand.

I was disappointed about Caroline. Someone from her family said she was quite upset (understandably so) about Teddy's recent medical scare. Anyone who's ever seen a seizure can probably relate to that. Whatever the reason, Caroline is a bright, honorable, capable person, even if she did get flustered by the media. I hope someone other than Cuomo gets the gig, he's a thug, imho. If all things are equal, I would love to see a person of color and/or a woman get the position.

Emma, no busting a move that I could see. They were all slow dances to Eartha Kitt's "At Last" in different versions. It took me 3-4 balls to realize they were playing the same song and it was planned, LOL.  I suppose the night wasn't a "bust a move" kind of night. Speaking of bust a move, the Obama girls can dance! Sasha and Malia, at the children's ball, were grooving to the Jonas Brothers and Miley.

I'm watching Morning Joe and they're discussing torture. Joe is one of my favorite republican talking heads, but I've got to disagree with him about torture. He doesn't think sleep deprivation and temperature change (making the rooms cold or warm) are torture and I do. I do not believe anything other than questioning is needed or acceptable to get necessary results. Yesterday Chris Matthews was driving me crazy when he kept asking what to do with hostages from Gitmo who we think are dangerous, claim they want to do harm to the country, but we have no proof of any wrong doing. I called the comment line to tell them that civil commitment. Being a danger to oneself or others is what is required for psychological commitment, which can be indefinite if people remain a threat. The bar is set pretty high, which can be both a blessing and a curse. Before the 80s getting someone committed was fairly easy so much that the rights of those committed were impinged upon. Now getting someone committed is pretty difficult, but not impossible. I am of the opinion that every human has value, even terrorists, and they deserve certain dignities even if they don't show that back to the world. Time to put our best feet forward.

Obama supporters- I think we've done a good job keeping this thread positive, in spite of challenges from those who would like to see this thread deteriorate. I think we've had the right idea about ignoring those who attempt to throw a red herring into the mix to cause strife. For me, the biggest difficulty is not 90% of the republican party, but the 10% Rush Limbaugh type, I just don't respect or get. How anyone could hope for the failure of a new president is beyond me. Wouldn't everyone benefit from a successful Obama presidency?

Last night Rachel said she still gets a kick out of saying President Obama and I feel the same way. In the immortal words of our Tracey woooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhooooooooooooooooooo . Ray Charles's "Wonderful World." is replaying in my head.

Hi Shirley ~ it was nice of you to post this link...I've never heard of Wintey Phipps before but have seen the documentary on John Newtown. Not sure what the back story was on what you cut and pasted but the words and song spoke for themselves.

Chemo ~ good to see you in your regular "costume"...hope you are feeling better!!

Tracy ~ I agree, no one wooohooo's like you do! Makes me smile everytime you do it!

Amy ~ seriously? "I do not believe anything other than questioning is needed or acceptable to get necessary results." You may as well put out the welcome mat for all those who would seek to do this country harm. These are people who train for years just for the opportunity to kill. Men, women and children who believe so strongly that they are in the right that they are willing to sacrifice their lives, and those of a father, sister, brother, son - in order to take out anyone who is not of the same belief. I don't disagree with every human being having value...and I am against the death penalty and torture. But there is a big difference between torture and extreme measures when it comes to getting intelligence information from those who seek to do us (and others) harm. I am not referring to humliation or waterboarding but sleep deprivation and temeperature change are benign ways of breaking a persons mental capacity to resist being forthright with information. If you are willing to sacrifice the lives of your family, friends, neighbors to remain above that sort of thing then you're a better person than I because I couldn't stand by and watch another plane fly into a building and kill thousands of Americans. It would be nice if all human beings were willing to play fair and by the rules but centuries of war have taught us that they are not. Sometimes, in order to protect yourself, your family and your country,  you have to do things you would rather not do. I became an Obama supporter because in him I saw someone who I think might be able to bring not just our country - but many nations together in peace. I pray that he is so sucessful that these conversations won't even have to take place because there will be no " prison camps" "torture chambers" or "terrorism" to debate. We will have to release the prisoners at Gitmo because we don't have the evidence to prosecute them, and some of them will go back and try to kill us. Without intelligence, we'll never see it coming when they do.

I don't mean to be argumentative but I strongly disagree with your viewpoints on some of these issues. I hope no one is offended by me stating mine.

On a postitive note, it was one heck of a first day in office! Way to roll up the sleves and start getting it done...yesterday President Obama put the world on notice...it's a new day and it's not going to be business as usual!!! Instead of turning the chanel everytime I hear the presidents voice (as I used to do) I will once again enjoy hearing of the things we are accomplishing...

My goodness.  I didn't realize they played that same song at all of the parties.  I would have liked to see Sasha and Malia dancing.  I bet that was cute.  My views on torture are plain and simple.  So many of us have sons and daughters fighting this war.  I would not want done to them, what we have done at Gitmo.

Moving forward and hoping Obama has great success.

Mad...isn't it crazy that they had to do the re-do for those bunch of people that are constitutionally illiterate!  But..I do understand his thouht process at this time.  It took 39 secs and hopefully shut alot of people up.  As far as Gitmo.......I am 100% behind President Obama on the decision. Enough of the fear factor and torture.  He really kicked some ass yesterday and I love the no lobbying rule!!!  A great start!!  And one that I feel is going to be sustained for the next 4 years, and the next 4 after that!!!!!!!!!

    Shirley:

You don't annoy me nor do I consider you a "troll".  I think if I want to be confirmed in my opinions, than I need to examine all the different aspects.  You offer a lot to the threads, and just so you know, I go to "that other side too" just to understand and sometimes reconfirm my beliefs.  Sometimes the different perspectives give me ideas to consider.  Othertimes they all just reconfrim what I already believe.  Nonetheless, I don't think we can be educated unless we explore other people's ideals.  Anyway, I don't want you to think you're totally unappreciated.  I enjoy you a great deal.

Just popping in to verify-- the retaking of the oath was recorded on audio and broadcast last evening on CNN.  I heard it.

Will they ever stop trying to dig up stuff?????  But I guess it's just inherent.  Remember Whitewater?  Recently read Carl Bernstein's "A Woman in Charge".  Hillary wasn't wrong about the 'vast rightwing conspiracy'.......  By the way, I read yesterday that Fox News is losing advertisers because the demographics are all wrong -- too many folks of a certain age, and not nearly enough younger ones coming along.

At any rate, congrats to all who supported -- and will continue to support -- your new President!  We look forward to his visit.

    what's the Holder up?

The Rep pols want Eric Holder to say what he will do with charges brought in the FUTURE - NO attorney worth his/her salt would comment on what they will/will not do regarding any FUTURE charges, and the Rep pols know it.

Holder will be confirmed next week and i doubt he will make any concessions in regards to further prosecution.

    ...........................

not only does torture not work or produce reliable information, it gets in the way of prosecution.

last week, we found out why the charges against the 20th hijacker, al-Qahtani were dismissed.

the reviewing judge, Judge Susan Crawford said: "His treatment met the legal definition of torture. And that is why I did not refer the case for prosecution."

cia interrogators have acknowledged that al-Qahtani was subjected to waterboarding and  treated harshly at guantanamo with the approval of donald rumsfeld. this treatment violated the Geneva Conventions, the UN Convention Against Torture, the Uniform Code of Military Justice and the 1996 War Crimes Act.

laws were broken allowing charges against the so-called 20th hijacker accused of helping to plan and possibly participate in the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks to be dropped.

when punishment preceeds trial, justice is impossible....torture isn't just wrong, it's un-American, unjust, and illogical.
