    Sorry to impose here, just wanted to comment on the Prom in Charleston MS.  There is a greater significance to it being in Charleston.  This is where a young Black Man, really only a boy named Emmett Till was brutally beaten to death for either looking at or whistling at a white woman.  He was a young man from Chicago, visiting relatives when he was drug from his bed, beaten, tied to a large Cotton Gin fan and thrown into the river.  The famous quote of the Sheriff when the body was found was 'ain't it just like a n............. to try to swim the river with a fan tied to him'.  His death was at first ruled an accident until his body was shipped back to Chicago, and against orders, his mother forced them to open the Casket.  The men that did this were caught and tried in front of worldwide media in Charleston.  It was an all white jury, and despite overwhelming evidence, they were acquitted.  After the trial, the defendants did a magazine interview bragging on how they killed Emmett.  That was one of the worst cases of Race hate and injustice in a state that had a long history of such things.  Now there are many changes, Hwy 49 between Clarksdale and Greenwood MS is named Emmett Till Hwy, there are parks in Charleston named after him.

    All is not changed, Morgan Freeman has done many great things for Charleston and Clarksdale, to revive the area.  Still he has never joined the Country Club, the only place to play golf,  It is not so much if he would be approved, it is more of he refuses to be the only 'chip in the cookie'

    I still do not like the ideologies of Our President, but I hope they work, and this will be the beginning of a better time.

    IBC...in my opinion, I don't think today is about everyone believing that all the woes of the world, or even our country are over.  I believe its a collective idea of hope and support for President Obama, and all that he is up against.  It's about pulling together as a country and standing up for what is right.  Certainly all over the world there are people still being wronged.  But the fact that we have someone now in charge, that also has the idea of hope and change, and I don't use those words lightly, is now real....we have to hold onto that.  We have to go with that and support, and help.   Just as many different people that live in this country and on this planet, you can have as many ideas as to why they are hopeful.  But there is no doubt that the majority of us are hopeful.  And it is up to us where we see injustice, to say something and not stand by and say or do nothing.  We can't change things, if we ourselves don't change.

    It's a great day!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Even more pointedly - wasn't there a discrimination case in Florida (Miami maybe) about three weeks ago? The playing field is not equal - for women, people of color, LGBTs, you get the point - we all know that. That it's taken so long for ANY city in the USA to come to its collective senses and step away from the "separate but equal" ideology Undecided is ridiculous. The civil rights movement was 45 years ago for crying out loud. Still, seeing a country come together to put a brown family in the White House is cause for hope and celebration.

    History was made today. And I'm sure Emmitt and his mom Mamie Till are applauding in heaven...

    I now return to my side of the thread, and all of you, have a great day.

    You know, my parents grew up in a tiny town in NC. Dad graduated in 1960 and my mom in 1961. their town was completely segregated - separate high schools, water fountains, restrooms, balcony seating for "coloreds" - the whole nine. They both high-tailed it out of Dodge as soon as they graduated (dad to college first then the Air Force; mom to work in NYC) to get away from the freaking oppresive nature that was the south for Black Americans back in the day. I'm so sorry that they didn't live to see this day, because I'm sure neither of them would have ever thought it would happen...

    My aunts - all of whom marched during the movement and exerienced jail cells, police dogs and fire hoses - are so amazed that this day has finally come. They're absolutely over the moon...

    Think Bushy has made it to Dallas yet?

    felicia- The stories about your aunts are really moving. I'm sorry your parents didn't live to see this day. I think your mom is amazing to have had the gumption to go to NYC so she wouldn't be treated like an animal, but of course sorry she had to do it. The south really sucks and they still have pretty far to go, from what I've seen of it, read of it and heard from it. As for bush, who cares where bush is or isn't. I hope we never have to see or hear from him again. Obama and congress have so much work to do tro clean up his messes.

    Did you guys see the LGBT band!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was thrilled to see it, with the rainbow drums . Yikes but the little bo peeps behind them are frightening-- worse than any bridesmaids dress I've ever seen LOL.

    This day has been so great, no ugly thoughts or people could ruin that. The only thing that threatened to bring me down was worrying about Ted Kennedy. He's such a hero and a giant. He's improved so many lives, fought for so many people who didn't have their own voice to fight. I was so scared for him. He means so much to so many people. In the history of the senate, he's probably one of the greatest senators. I'm thrilled to hear him talking about getting back to work tomorrow (if he's allowed). I truly believe he will will himself to make it until he passes health care for everyone.

    We should hear about Caroline's senate seat by the weekend, as soon as the senate confirms her. She would have been confirmed if she had agreed to give foreign donors to her husbands' foundation. To me this seems like a no brainer, if one is working on diplomacy throughout the world that any appearance of impropriety, even where there is nothing there, reflects poorly on Mrs. Clinton and the whole country.  So in a first, I side with the lone republican holding things up for her.

    These folks were approved by unanimous consent:

    Interior Secretary Ken Salazar;

    Energy Secretary Steven Chu;

    Education Secretary Arne Duncan;

    Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano;

    Peter Orszag, director of the Office of Management and Budget;

    Eric Shinseki, the secretary of Veterans' Affairs;

     Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack

    I think I'm going to sleep very well tonight. I'm exhausted!

    Mr Daniels was an elderly (at least to me, in my youth in the early 70's) Black man who earned his living washing cars - he carried his metal bucket with him. He would come into my Dad's store on a Saturday and visit...the nicest man you could ever meet. Well, I don't know what I said to Dad one day, but it was obviously not right...it's a wonder Dad didn't turn around and smack me one. I remember him saying to me - It doesn't matter what his job is...Mr Daniels is one of the smartest men I know and one of the smartest you will ever know..

    Dad was right. I learned an important lesson that day. Even after Dad died, Mr Daniels would come in and chat with my mom or my sister or me, always pleasant, always with something interesting to say. Black or white - didn't matter, he was a friend.

    I like to think that Dad and Mr Daniels are up there raising a toast today. Here Here!

    PSK07,

    Thank you for sharing your experience in childhood about such personal relationships with a person of color. Isn't it amazing how those experiences stick with you and affect how you live your life?

    I too remember early experiences with black men that worked for my father; and my friendship with an older black man when I worked at a car dealership. This man washed the cars. He was most humble and very, very smart. He could have run circles around the salesmen at that dealership. At 65 he took up skiing. I was speechless when he told me that. He came to several Thanksgivings at my parents' home. When we lost contact my father still asked about him and wished he was still coming. I thought about him today, and my father (who died in 2003), wondering what they would be thinking if they were present to experience history in the making.

    I don't think anything (other than the births of my daughter and granddaughter) that has made such a profound impact on me.

    Again, I really enjoyed your story, and have a little understanding of what that experience meant to  you.

    Take care,

    grace

    I'm enjoying all the fashion talk about the ball attendees. Michelle's dress is just beautiful. I guess they have a number of balls to attend and dance at. I hope she is wearing comfortable shoes!!

    Guess they are saying now that Bush and the conservatives in Washington "killed" the social life in DC. Bush didn't like to go out at night. He was early to bed and early to rise. The President's life and his family's is pretty much not their own for the next 4 years.

    What an amazing day. I'm still processing this. I talked to my former boss at the community college I worked at for 16+ years--she was able to be at home with her older son (visiting from NYC) and she shared what this day meant to her as an African American woman. Wonder if the changes will trickle up or down? There is so much that needs to change in our education system and so many other systems in this nation. It seems overwhelming at times. I will be volunteering as much as I can to be an impetus for change in my neighborhood. I hope we can all reach out to each other. I like his idea of expecting more of not only our leaders but each of us. I wait with an open heart and mind to know what my calling will be for the next 4 years, and hopefully another 4 years after that!

    My Hope is for Peace in the World !! Amen
