Just watched the Golden Globes runway review on Fashion Police on E! There definitely were some BIG fashion citations to hand out! LOL
Linora--can't wait to see your pix!!
Staying warm & looking stylish are definitely at odds! LOL
Be well & stay strong

Kathi -- love that dress! Nicely tailored and great colors. The new avatar is great!
Rock- so very sorry to hear about your chilly lunchroom!
10 here today. Went out with some friends last night - it was -6. Nonetheless, we toughed it out and had a blast - nothing like a couple of Bailey's and coffees to provide some warmth. mm mmm

Good morning girls...just poppin in to give you another update...what a crazy day it was!!!
Model No. 2 didn't show up yesterday....girls that age can be pretty flakey, so when Gina arrived at one, I had Dress No. 2 on the mannikin...she really liked it. In fact, she liked it better than the dress I had already designed for her and really wanted to wear it. We talked about her modeling both dresses, but given the limited space and sophistication of the organizers, I was thinking that this might make things a little too complex, so I asked her if she had a friend who could model.
Well, she does!!!...and this friend is her same height, size, and body type!! We agreed to contact her to be an "understudy" ....in the end, we decided on one dress to a model, and this will work out so much better. Originally, a local salon had offered their services with hair and makeup for the models, but with so many women participating, this will be impossible. So Gina and her friend will stay with me the night before, I'll put the finishing touches on their gowns, they can decide on jewelry, and they can both do each other's hair.
There are so many people participating with large entourages of friends and fialy, I don't know if they are going to be able to fit them all into the Opera House...it will be such a shame if all of Gina's family doesn't get to see her! But I've never had so much fun....will post pix of Gina and gowns later....

Raye, raye, hooraye!!! What day is it now?? You didn't have any puffs with your Bailey's I hope?!!!
Quitting smoking is one of the goll darned most awful hard things to do, I think it was the hardest thing I ever did in my life, but it was the BEST thing I ever did. It was like losing 10-15 years off my age. We're proud of you!!!

Finally got to see the GG fashion photos on instyle's website. Some gorgeous gowns there. I wouldn't know which to pick as my fave.
Talk about a fashion victim, though. Heidi Klum looked ridiculous. OMG. What was she thinking? Probably the first rule of fashion is to not look like a clown.
InStyle's February issue is on the stands and Kate Winslet is the cover girl. She looks gorgeous in that blue dress. The article says she liked it so much she bought it in red and a black one, too. What a beautiful body she has. I don't know why I hear now and then that she is fat. She looks pretty perfect to me.
As it is still snowing, I'm sticking with the LL Bean look for the forseeable future. I mean, how would I look with a broken leg from a fall due to wearing high heels??? Casts are just not that fashionable these days.
So, is metallic leather still going to be big for spring? I keep seeing lots of oversized tote bags and purses in both gold and silver. I can't see spending too much for such a thing, but maybe an overstock at Marshall's or TJ Maxx????
Linora, it sounds like your fashion show is going to be just wonderful. Cannot wait to see the pics.

Still cold here, but we have a slight heat-wave--I think it's about 9 degrees today!
Had to give a presentation at church today & was wondering HOW to dress in this cold & still look dressed for a Sunday! Came up with an old tweedy grey suit, black boots & knitted silk T...it worked! It was comfortable (wider skirt) & warm (lined) I think I looked pretty good (if I do say so myself)
I wish I had a body like Kate Winslet! I watched a re-run of GG last nite--holy crap----most of the younger women had waists that were smaller than most men's necks!!!!! The sad part was that so many of the older women looked as tho they had given up--long sleeves & over-sized boxy jackets........I should be a stylist! LOL
Wear at least one piece that makes you feel you look good!
-
Raye! Just wanted to say congrats on the not smoking!!!!! You go, girl! I"m an ex-smoker myself so I've been there.
-
Hi Girls,
Just a quick Good Morning to you all. It is a balmy 11 degrees, so I was able to wear a fitted gray wool skirt with boots (with tights and wool socks of course), a black sweater with lacy white cuffs and neckline, thin belt around the waist and chunky necklace with big blue stone on leather cord! SO, I do feel somewhat dressed up today.
Linora - Can't wait to see the pics of Gina and the gowns! When are they coming?
Heidi Klum gets on my nerves a bit. And they always cut her handsome husband Seal (who has the talent) out of the picture or camera shot on the red carpet. I loved Drew Barrymore's look. So pretty. Yep - Kate Winslet looked gorgeous as well. Beautiful skin.
RE Smoking: Thanks for the encouragement girls. I really really need it! Nope, no smoking with the Baileys. 18 days and counting...
-
This is my idea of a fabulous dress. I would almost kill for this. Almost.
-
Some pix.... idea for dress 2 started coming together on the mannikin. The idea began with the discarded bodice of an old black taffeta party dress. I have turned it upsidedown and placed it on the hips. Now I am draping the dress on my model, this is Saturday and I am so tired everytime I put something down I lose it!!The dress is a lot further along now and I'll finish today before the second fitting tomorrow.Linora
-
Tina...want someone to make it for ya? Do you really want it that short?I decided that my knees weren't exposable after about age 32!!!!
-
L., your dress is just lovely! The BEST part is that scrolly or embroidered fabric over the hips. So classy. And I like that the black is layered over the gray.
Oh, the Versace.....No, I wouldn't wear it THAT short but it would be above my knees. What do I love about that dress? The fabric, the overlay of the petal-effect shapes on the bodice, the fact that there is no loose fabric anywhere. (Death for we ladies of short stature.) LOVE the way the straps are constructed. Oh, to die for! Maybe Vogue will have a pattern for it soon. Must check when I ever get to a JoAnn's store. I think they still carry Vogue. Actually, I guess I can look online these days, right?
-
Tina, my sister looks on line for patterns for the bridal and prom gowns that she creates. She prints out the info including the sketches and fabric requirements so she can start planning before she gets to the store and purchases the pattern. She watches the Hancock monthly sale flyer for the pattern sales and buys them up then (this weekend she got a $14 pattern for $1, and an $18 pattern for $2). I think all the major companies (simplicity, butterick, Mccalls and Vogue) have sites where you can browse their latest catalog and even buy on line but why pay full price when she can find a sale.

That dress is lovely, Linora. Back in my skinny days when I was a size 10, I would wear skirts above the knees, but now, the longer the better... Good thing about my Mom of the groom dress, it was to the floor. And the third time I had worn a dress in 6 years. Do I need to get a lift???
-
Thanx for the remarks...I am struggling today getting the grey underskirt working. I am not using patterns...I've been draping directly on the mannikin and find that I can anticipate problems and get a better result that way. You know, I can appreciate the value of hand sewing. You certainly have better control...machine sewing made intricate designs more difficults...machines just aren't quite as nimble as fingers (and they don't mind getting pricked, either, OUTCH!)
L
PS, BTW, we just had a *new* water conditioning system installed today, along with a special filter to remove the arsenic. The water is still grayish looking but that will change.. Anyway, the total cost wasn't bad at all because our installer decided to let us try out the arsenic filter for a year before making a commitment to buy it...hooray...clean drinking water is on the way!!!
-
So, Raye, your outfit of yesterday sounded quite cute but I want to know what you did with the boots and socks once you arrived at work. Ditch them for something else not quite so warm for indoors?
Linora, how's the dress coming along now? Overcome your "designer's block?"
I've been looking at this jacket in the new J Jill catalog. As it is such a pretty color (good on me) and has raglan sleeves (good for my narrow shoulders) and a nice kind of capable of being dressy-ish or totally casual look to it, I am considering a purchase. I am only afraid I am being waaayyy too conservative (my usual thing) so want to know what you all think. Good with everything from jeans to ?????

Hey Tina...I used to be a fan of JJill too..but I returned too many items. I think it is important to be able to try things on without paying shipping charges.Took a look at this jacket...it looks comfy but BEWARE...linen & cotten will wrinkle...terribly. Personally, I like this onebut it's also the same blend.BTW...no designers block at all...just a problem getting the dress on the mannikin after I put the zipper (her hips are slimmer than the mannikins shoulders)... working hard today as well...Linora
-
The dress is cute .. and you must be a talented lady!
But I want to ask about the arsenic in the water!!! Do we all have it or are you just specially favored to get that? Is it well water or does your whole neighborhood have it??
-
Linora, I love that jacket and its color. I need something a bit less sporty, though.
I was planning on visiting a local JJill store to try on stuff. I know what you mean about all the returns.
Rocktober, arsenic is naturally occuring in many areas.
-
Linora, I'm jealous that you are getting to play with all that fabric & those clothes. That black & gray gown is beautiful.
Girls, I just bought some fab tights to ward off the 10 degree chill. Got them from www.modcloth.com & they are made by www.LookFromLondon.com which has even more unbelievably fun tights & socks. Wore these last night to an inaugural party with, of course, matching earrings, a short black skirt & a butternut colored wrap-around sweater:
-
Good Morning Fashionistas.... Well I was very busy with Gina's gown yesterday but not too busy to take some time off to watch the Inauguration and the Inaugural Ball. I was dying to see what Michelle was going to wear...she was positively stunning in her beautiful, diaphonous, flocked assymmetrical gown..
I think she's definitely going to be a real fashion-maker, not just in clothing but in character. She is so beautiful, so strong, she's the Woman Behind the Man...I don't Obama could have made it to where he has without her.
On the other hand, while I was waiting to see Michelle, I had to look at the other women, most of whom were dressed very tastefully. However, I was a bit taken aback when Mariah got on the stage with a gown that barely covered her nipples, she was holding it up with her elbows!!! Shameless I thought.
They had to work hard to get the picture below...it was one with her hair covering up most of her bare bazoom....the photo is very flattering and not what I was seeing most of the time when she was singing...I was so relieved to see her get off the stage. I thought she might pull a Janet Jackson maneuveur!!! How embarrassing that would have been for the U.S. diplomaticallyl!!!
Kathy..those are some tights!!!....I am having the time of my life here with this Runway competition. There will be more. Next time we have one (and I'm told we'll be doing it again this summer), come on down and do one here!!! I am getting nervous now because I am running out of time. I haven't even seen Andrea yet and won't until 3 pm the day before the show. If I have a major fitting problem Gina will have to wear both dresses!!!
Linora
-
OMG...I hope I didn't offend anybody with that last post....if I bothered you, don't mind me, I'm just an old fashioned PRUDE... I do think exposure has gotten more and more outlandish and it would be nice to see women dress more conservativelyl again... I think women can be very sexy and very attractive without showing so much skin. You know, Lady Like...but that's just me.
-
You didn't offend me, Linora. I'm no prude, but I think good manners would suggest to Mariah that exposing her boobs at a Presidential inauguration might not be in the best taste. Jeesh.
As far as your next fashion show is concerned, if you need a middle-aged but still leggy model to represent us Baby Boomers, I'm there, sistuh!!
-
Kathy...you don't look at all middle-aged to me, in fact I am not sure I know what middle-aged is anymore. I just hit another one of those big birthdays (6-0 !!!)...but you know, when I am shopping or dealing with strangers...they call me "young lady" and I must say, I catch some of those younger, better looking men taking a second look...oh, maybe they're just humoring me...
Linda
-
Prude? Not at all. I love Mariah Carey, but she has always dressed way too slutty for my taste. Yes, that's right. I said slutty. Her skirts are always too short, and her (twice augmented) breasts are usually in ill fitted pieces. I think for an event as classy as an inauguration, she and her team of stylists should have chosen something else.
Mind you, she's a diva and can wear whatever she chooses, but I think she has such a pretty face, and she is bi-racial which makes her even more of a role model to so many kids that come from mixed backgrounds... I just wish she highlighted more of her face and her natural beauty, rather then wearing skimpy outfits all the time.
I will still purchase her CD's though, so I guess it's moot point.
-
Couldn't agree more, Beth. I was bowled over by her talent & voice when Mariah first hit the scene. But her slutty presentation since is like she's trying too hard when all she needs to do is show up, smile, open her mouth & let that amazing voice come out.
-
I remember Mariah when she first made the rock scene...she was utterly georgeous...her biracial makeup contributed to that. What was she? Half Jewish, half black? What a contrast with the way she was last night! I think it is the way these rock stars get "marketed"...people convince them they have to look slutty. I say...let's bring ladies back! I certainly do miss them...women like Jackie Kennedy, Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn. Michelle Obama is certainly going to be a great role model, you betcha she's going to raise those daughters to be as elegant as she is!!
Maybe after spending so much money on her BBs she wants to get her money's worth!!!
-
Hey, at least she didn't sing "Happy Birthday Mr. President....."
Doesn't anyone wonder that if her nipples aren't showing by now in that dress that she must have saggy boobs?
Maybe she's doing the Michael Jackson and morphing into something else....
-
Linora, I agree that Michelle looked fabulous~~~loved the gown and would enjoy seeing the fabric close up.
Beyonce looked like the lady she is. Sure, she bares it on the red carpet, but within bounds, by Hollywood standards. She was simply stunning at the Ball~~~and appropriate.
Mariah simply cannot cover up---anywhere!! She has her ski jacket unzipped to there in Aspen, and goes on daytime talk shows with 6 inches of cleavage. If she wear her skirt up to the vajayjay, she does. I would think her new husband might make a suggestion or two? As you say, with that glorious voice, she does not need to resort to exhibitionism.
-
Barb...that birthday song idea was so funny, but Marilyn really outclassed her!! Daff...I agree with you, Beyonce did look absolutely stunning and she had a voice to match!!!
The thing that really bothers me about this is how it makes Americans look to outsiders. People in more conservative countries, where religion is still very important, think of America as an evil, pagan, violent place...a place where there are no morals. When you see some of the movies, the TV shows, the gyrations of the rock singers, you can see where they get this idea. I am sure that people from all over the world were watching TV to get a glimpse of Michelle and Obama...his election was celebrated worldwide. And it is an embarrassment to me that they turned on their TVs to see our wonderful new president and while they were waiting they were treated to that tasteless demonstration...this crazy obsession we have with breasts and that bigger is always better. I mean..it's just plain stupid...where are our values?!!!
