I'm interested in the comment that you can't be overdressed.  I've always heard/read that when in doubt, UNDERdress a bit.  Comments?

Tina:  I have been places where I was either over dressed or under dressed.   Jeans and casual when other women were in pant suits or dresses, and the opposite.   Neither is comfortable and makes one stand out like a sore thumb, especially if  you are 5'9 in bare feet...   My current philosophy is to NOT wear blue jeans when in doubt.   Black jeans, or corduroys if I think it is going to be more casual.   One last comment:  I do not find myself in this position often, so I am probably best to keep my mouth shut, but the scenes from Sex and the City of NYC lead me to think blue jeans are a no no.   And a P.S. -- I do not think the fashion police will be on patrol...!!!

Now here's a look that's fashionable, feminine, tasteful, sexy, business like, and not over dressed, and it can be flirty or conservative depending on your facial expression,  and I think it looks like you Beth NY...

 

Skirt doesn't have to be quite so tight and sleeves could be 3/4 to full length.

Actually, I'd like to make it my kind of look...I think I'm going to go for the long slim skirt next season, with accent belts & heels,clip style earrings.  Love the neckline, and her hair color is nice too.  

Now I think I'll ski off a few pounds!

I think I am referring to "dressing up", as opposed to over-dressing. I've seen women at evening weddings in shirtwaist dresses, at church in corduroys, and don't get me started at what one sees in upscale restaurants or the theater~~~or even when invited to cocktails or dinner in a private home. Better to look like you deem these occasions as important enough to look great!

Over-dressing would be wearing a dress better than the mother of the bride.....

I can wear jeans and corduroys every day at home or the grocery, but to go out? That's what I bought these great-looking clothes for! (I would buy more if I worked outside the home!! )

I did have to laugh when a young mother with kids at little Sasha Obama's new school said that her 7-year-old asked her to dress "like the other mommies"!!!!!

I still think it's too cold in NY to wear bare legs! If Beth wears a dress, she'll have to have a very nice long coat and boots. Boots would look dumb with a dress unless the dress is longer and a heavier material.

This is a guy she's been talking to for years, he just wants to meet to talk. Beth also wants to go out with the girls after, can't see her chillaxin' in that dress....

This is a really good and timely discussion for me who wants to freshen up her look a bit.

Snow, ice, slush, frozen ravines and hills on the sidewalks and streets and parking lots of New England greatly complicate the ability to be well dressed.  First priority is to dress defensively!  Not only against freezing winds up the butt (dresses and skirts) but against slip sliding onto your head and breaking your neck and poking your eye out.

Maybe I need to go shopping this afternoon after my hair appt and buy myself a pair of tall boots with NO HEELS and a great traction sole that I can depend upon to keep me on my feet for the next few months.  Spring may not come until late April here.  Grrrr.

I don't see anything wrong with dark nice jeans, Beth. A nice blouse or sweater, dressy boots or shoes and some killer, but appropriate accessories? I think that would be fine for the situation you describe. The cordouroy idea is another one I like.  I have some really cute but dressy slim wale (is that correct?) cords that are slim fit, slightly boot cut and ride a bit below the waist (not too low waisted), which I can wear with ANYTHING - blouses, dress shirts, sweaters, boots, pumps...

That dress above the Keira is wearing is very stylish. I love it. Not a big fan of the color, however.  Would prefer it in black and white, as opposed to the gray and brown?

Okay, here's the latest. We are DEFINITELY meeting over drinks. And it will be 15 degrees without the wind chill and possibly snowing, or there will be snow on the ground.

I'm set on the top half. I'm going with the cream colored cashmere sleevless turtle neck, with a black mid thigh length wrap sweater. I feel like black pants make it look too boring, although I will have my purple pea coat over it all. I have a pair of pants that have a black white and gray pattern, not herringbone, but a bigger pattern, and I think they would look great, BUT, I think they are total work/suit type pants, and they are very long, and I would have to wear a really high heeled boot as to not ruin them on the slushy streets. (I'm sure we'll walk from his office to a bar)

I like the black and cream colors on top, b/c no matter what I decide to do with my hair that morning (the great debate over plum lowlights or golden highlights in my dark brown hair) either will look good with those basic colors, and really bring the focus on my face.

Now that we're definitely meeting over drinks, do you guys still think jeans are out?

No, I don't think the jeans are out at all. I think they'd be perfect considering the circumstances - meeting over drinks, slushy streets, casual meeting.

Oh you guys - I found the cutest dress by INC. - but it's sooo expensive, $118.00. Not online yet.

I love INC!!! The clothes wear well over time, are not totally budget breaking, and they fit me so beautifully. I can't wait to see it!

Oh Beth - it is a sweater dress with purples, blues, whites and just gorgeous colors throughout. Hits right about the knee and would look wonderful with flat black boots (with no tights).

Beth, you seem to want to wear jeans .. no matter what anyone says .. so do what you want, it's your meeting and you seem to think it is fine ... go with what you know!

(for me, I am totally against it .. for a date, yes, potential colleague ..no)

My first day in my new position that I got mid-September was product knowledge training at a vendors location. It was casual, jeans! Lasted from 8 in the morning until 11 pm, then an hour drive home. These 30 or so people each write over a million (minimum) to 3 million a year in sales and are quite comfortable in jeans. We were not in front of our customers.

Different strokes for different folks...color is so personal.  I just love that gray and brown.  I've been in a gray and brown phase now for two years.

That dress does not look good on the girl.  Hips are straining the plaid.  Armpits look unattractive.  Looks uncomfortable.  Well, she looks like she *thinks* she looks good.  I'm sure I have days like that, too. LOL

I agree with you about the armpits but with those georgeous arms, why not show off a little...the plaid straining on the hips...isn't that the idea?

Well.. I can see I'm batting zero on this one...but I still love that dress!!! I'm going to do a knock off as soon as find the right fabric.

Not batting zero - I like the dress, just not the colors. The cut of the dress is very nice.

Beth thank you...I was beginning to wonder if I had any fashion sense.  I really do like KK's style...she picks her clothes in the identical shades I  do...mahogany reds, all shades of green, taupy grays, black, white... Perhaps I can make some improvements in the knock off...I sure can't make any improvements on her figure!!

Beth, when it is frigid, snowy, and/or icy, anything goes! This meeting better damn well be a success; we've spent more time preparing for it than getting our own selves dressed!!

No comments on Golden Globes gowns? There certainly were plenty of "Golden Globes" on display!! {{sigh}}

Daffodil, I didn't catch the Golden Globes.  I'll have to search the net for some pics later.

And, yes, Beth.  We are all heavily invested now in your meeting on Friday.  You'll be sitting there with all of us looking over your shoulder so be smashing.

Beth, at least you have hair. Most of my head is now covered with a soft fuzzy bunch of dark hairs.   I have a very nice ash blonde wig that did not cost me anything, and an auburn one with henna highlights that I got for $29.99.  Everyone except my son loves the auburn one.  It is a straight layered cut and so different from my former naturally curly, short, salt and pepper gray/brown hair.   And I was the only family member to end up with brown hair except my Dad.   All the others, sis, bro and Mom, grandma, grandpa --  had red/auburn hair.

Beth...Since you're meeting for drinks I cast my vote for those those jeans and I'd tuck 'em into a pair of sensible boots (not the tall skinny ones with heels, that might look a little trashy).  After all, they interviewing YOU and you need to be you.  

 

Since you're meeting for drinks, I think the Big Question is... VAT are you going to drink? My advice is keep it light all around and don't let drinking get to be too much of good thing, or else they might not even remember what you said, even less what you wore.  Morph it into dinner before the third round.

Daffodil - HA. I had to laugh at your comment regarding the many golden globes on display. Yes indeed, there were! BAH I say (only because I am jealous).

Speaking of, I ordered a pair of bikini bottoms (for swimming) from VS ($19.00, couldn't resist!) - black and white polka dots - the flap folds over (same as the pair I got last year, but black and white); anyway, the envelope arrives  yesterday; I am so excited to show my husband the swim suit bottoms so I rip open the envelope and pull out this HUGE pink and white flowerly bra. HELLO! To be fair, I called right away, they are shipping the correct item and the big bra is in the UPS bin outside as I type.

Linora, I also said that I liked the dress, just not the color for moi.

Nancy, hang in there - the hair will come back sweetie. I also had an auburn wig and it was my favorite!

Raye, that wig was cute on you, I remember that photo!

Keep up the non smoking habit.  Remember to tell yourself when you think of one or if someone asks you ... say to them or self, "I am a non-smoker" ...

My mom went to hypnosis .. instead of saying negative, "I don't smoke," or "I quit" ... just say positive things in your head, "Why would I do that? I am a non-smoker!"
