Yeah Raye! Changing state laws to the rescue for many a quitter! Beth-I agree with the stinly hair thing TOTALLY!
Lisa---I had a problem trying to wear certain favorite summer outfits once I lost my hair. I did not have good luck wearing wigs as my scalp is ultra sensitive (I don't believe ANYONE could make a suggestion to overcome that problem that I haven't tried!) It was easier in cold weather than in warmer. I found I wore things that were more conducive to bandanas & baseball caps===NEVER wore one in my life & won't again til I have to! It sux when you look good from the neck down----what a sucky fashion issue!!!!!!
Bird in the boot!!---your kitties LOVE you------and we all know: some loves just aren't what we seek!
Ok---this may cause a huge debate here, but fashion is so subjective! We are conditioned to view one thing as preferable to another. In Europe very few women shave. I have had this debate with lots of ppl=====is that really so ugly? My BIL is Austrian & asked my sis not to shave cuz it offends HIS sensibilities! (Only whores shave?) I know this has changed in recent years in cosmopolitan Europe, but if something is natural how can we be so brain washed as to reject it as ugly?
This goes for using deoderants, too! When I first arrived in Frankfurt & Vienna it was record heat & I thought I'd gag just walking down the street! But after a few weeks I no longer noticed (it may sound sick-but when I smell "clean" sweat now it takes me back to a very pleasant time!) We can be CONDITIONED to most anything can't we??
your take please....

Beth, my 7th grade home ec teacher called me a juvenile deliquent but I still grew up to like to do thready things. In spite of the battleaxe.
Linora, I don't do omens. I would, however, consider it my lucky day if I found some money in my boot toe. LOL
You damned Califonians with your damned lovely weather. (I have a very close friend in northern CA.) Don't you blaspheme me, you! (Can you tell I love the Blues Brothers? I think I know almost every line by heart.)
I've been quite good this week with cutting back on my snacking and champagne. I even managed to leave the opened bottle of Baileys in the fridge untouched. I haven't weighed myself yet but I feel soooooooooo smug and weightless. So, Raye, there are two of us with an agenda.
-
Lisa, even though it's warm here, the sun is just too far away for me to feel like I want to go lay by the pool. I guess maybe I should grab the bikes and head to the beach!
-
you people and your warm weather. UGH. lol j/k
I just heard Patrick Swayze went into the hospital with pneumonia... so sad
I need to decide what to wear to this meeting next week. It's not really an interview per say, but the end goal is to get a position with them. I don't want to over dress, b/c on a daily basis it's not the kind of place the guys wear suits to. More business casual. And it's not until the end of the day at 5:00, and it's more casual, might even be over drinks. SOOOO, are jeans with a cream colored cashmere cowel neck turtle neck and a long sleeve black cardigan/duster type sweater with heels okay???
After the mtg I'm seeing an old friend for drinks, then heading to my girlfriends house to sleep for the night, so I don't want to be too over dressed also, b/c I can't change my clothes inbetween the meeting, and seeing my friends. Thoughts?
-
No way to the jeans! Maybe some nice black pants, not slacks, pressed nice. Or what about a nice pair of wool slacks and a blouse with a nice warm coat -- skip the ski mask even tho NY must at least be under 50 degrees, you'll just have to suffer.
-
Rockto--you made me LOL!
Not sure, Beth. But my mom always said, "When in doubt-go without" Not suggesting you go without pants! LOL Maybe something casual that is not jeans.......
Whenever we were unsure what to wear to a function mom always told us to err on the side of over dressing rather than under dressing saying, "Can someone really accuse you of looking too nice?????"
She had real style into her 80's!!!! Good Luck!
Had to fix some typos AGAIN!
-
Beth- Definitely not the jeans. Good luck on the meeting.
-
Beth--No jeans.
Linora--I agree with Saint. A dead bird. From a cat's perspective, this is a great present. The cat could have eaten the bird, but no. It put it somewhere special, just for you.
Saint--I agree with you re: au naturel. In my opinion, sweaty people wearing natural fabrics, i.e. cotton and wool are fine (i.e. don't smell bad), but there is nothing worse than the smell of sweat clinging to a polyester double knit. Takes your breath away. Maybe I went to one too many weddings in July back in the mid '70's...

Beth...given the time of your interview and the fact (?) that it may be over drinks, I'd say wear something flattering and feminine. You're being interviewed by men, right? Men in suits? They may be concerned about how you will represent their firm, I say, go for the polished professional but sexy look. Possibly a stylish dress (not too short), or even a suit but be sure to feminize it with makeup, jewelry...whatever!
Your first outfit...the jeans with the cashmere sweater & beads actually sounded interesting, but you know better than any of us if it's appropriate. With cashmere and jewelry and heels jeans can actually seem dressy...& sexy!!!
Susannah, tina...thanx for the good thoughts about the bird...I'll tell you, my thoughts were not good when I found that thing!!! I don't know if I can ever wear those boots again!!
I say, dress like you're dressing for a date. Dress appropriately but let them know you're a woman.
Linora

My take on the interview outfit is to not wear blue denim jeans but I think great-fitting black jeans would be perfectly appropriate while still being relaxed for the meeting. You will also benefit by a large, stunning pendant hung from a long chain on that cowl neck sweater. Something with a large, central jewel. No other jewelry. Your outfit will say "I'm chic, confident, not trying too hard."
Just my hick take on it, of course.
-
Beth - dont go with "a large stunning pedant ...hung from a long chain" As a mutually well-endowed woman that puts it about tit-high. Not where all the attention needs to be.
Lisa
ps - saint I haven't started chemo yet. The question was about hat har with HAIR
-
Oops. Forgot about the bosom. Make sure it hangs lower. Or way higher. Myself, I have no shelf.
-
hugs lisa----For me, it seems a similar problem: a hat that you can't take off once you are in public!!! Hard to be fashionable unless you are at a wedding, Kentucky Derby or sunday church services in the south!!!!! LOL
-
Saint, I forgot to answer you about the shaving. I had heard that many European women don't shave although the ones I have know that were now living in the US did shave, as far as I could see.
As for legs, if I don't shave mine they become lethal weapons - to ME. Self-inflicted stab wounds.
Unshaven underarms breed odor. Yuck. No, I don't think I could grow to love that.
In some parts of the world, ALL body hair is removed. Think Brazilian. And, brides in many cultures are plucked of every hair on their bodies pre-nup. I see no reason to adopt the European model.
-
LOL--ok-nor do I want the Brazilian!!!!!
I think it's all conditioning--IF we never shaved in the first place we wouldn't have needle legs when it grows out!!! Do you know why shaving became fashionable?
It was during the war when there was no silk for stockings---so they shaved & DREW "seams" up the back of their legs!!!! Why did we stop the seams??LOL
-
My comments on the interview outfit to wear: How about a plain sweater with a scarf or shawl and snazzy earrings, but not the kind that jingle and jangle. Call attention to your face. Black jeans sound ok, but not blue jeans, even if the $ 300 designer brand. Low heels or dressy flats or boots???
Underarm hair is so disgusting. Those men with enough to start a wild fire disgust me, especially at a picnic and on a woman... ewwwwwwwww !!!!! Leg hair is not attractive, if it is stubble from having shaved and indicated laziness in not keeping it off , but if it is soft, natural and not stubbly... why not? My opinion, and you can always use the excuse that you have to avoid cuts, nicks and cant risk infection. I lucked out this past summer with NO hair anywhere from chemo... Hair or no hair, that is the question of the day... !!!
-
It's not an interview... there is no resume involved. I'm meeting w. the founder of one of the largest organizations for the inbetween generation with cancer. Yes, his organization has a position open that is a temporary gig, only for a month, and I would be great for it, but I'm not looking for a 4 week gig. I've been talking to this guy for about two years, and I recently told him I was laid off, and he was really surprised, and said we should get together and talk and see if we can't find something mutual that we may be able to use each other for.... he knows I could handle the position he's looking to fill, but he also knows that I'm looking for a full time, long term gig.
So it's not an interview. They do not wear suits. He will either be in khaki's or jeans. Looking professional would look desperate in my mind... he's a young cancer survivor. We were supposed to meet over drinks at an event in two weeks, but he can't attend, so he asked me to come meet at his office at 5pm....
So now, with all that information, are you all still voting No on jeans???
-
rocktober, laughing re: NY being under 50 degrees.... Today it's 15 degrees. But even now you would never catch me dead in a ski mask... that is such a glamour DON'T. lolol.
-
Beth--as I have said for years: I trust your judgement!
YOU will choose the right thing in the end. If you FEEL good about what you are wearing you will not be distracted by it & can devote your full attention to the task at hand! Look casual, professional & CONFIDENT!
Good luck & good vibes for the meeting!
-
A couple of thoughts, Beth: if this guy is seriously interested in a job for you, you probably want to give a good first impression. Sexy is not the way to go, MY opinion. Simple, understated, but clean, neat and just in case, I would have a resume in my purse. If you feel jeans are the way to go, then do it. Have you ever met this man before in person? I think you said they sometimes wear suits, and this could be one of those days and you could feel odd if in blue jeans. Do you have a pair of khaki slacks? That could solve the whole issue -- if good enuf for him to wear, then good enuf for you??? I know the frustration of having to decide how dressy or how casual to dress. I opt for a middle ground when possible. Good luck and let us know what happens.
-
I'm still no to jeans --- there are so many other choices in pants...... but sounds like you want to wear jeans. Why can't you wear khaki's and a sweater?
-
Any female that wears khakis and a sweater in NYC is surely a tourist. Khakis are for men, the golf course, tennis, country club, or in the summer if they were cut off capris, and even then, that's a stretch. I may not be a true fashionista, but I would never be caught dead in the middle of winter in Manhattan in khaki pants. He will not be in a suit. Not ever. But, you guys have me rethinking some things.
I'm thinking a coin toss over whether or not to wear jeans or black pants. If the Giants win I'll wear jeans, if the Eagles win I'll wear black pants. I guess I am really trying to not look "officy" but still look professional.
Plus, the fact that I won't be able to change for when I go out with my friends afterward, also has me leaning toward the jeans route.
Maybe I'll be in inspired that morning when I change my hair color. hmmmmm
-
How about go SHOPPING for some new pants!!! Maybe wide-leg cargo trousers?
Or how about a dress with tights? That's always casual!
-
-
-
I've never been anywhere, except the beach, that a jacket and pants(not jeans of any color) has not been appropriate.
To style it up: as a famous acturess once said: you can get in ANYWHERE in a long silk, satin scarf.
Since it's cold, wear boots--always classy.
My son is in a career where NO ONE dresses up, computers, but at any interview he wears a jacket---you just cannot go wrong with a jacket and slacks. a nice cashmere sweater under the jacket is a plus. You don't have to wear pearls, but a trendy pin, necklace or scarf is alway "in" and you will apparently be meeting "after 5", when most at the bar will be in business clothes. I'd not want to stand out in any color jeans, even if the DID cost $300..
-
Whenever we were unsure what to wear to a function mom always told us to err on the side of over dressing rather than under dressing saying, "Can someone really accuse you of looking too nice?????"
Amen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I vote for looking professional~~~after all, when you wear jeans everywhere, isn't it nice to have a chance to play fashionista in chic clothes? A compliment to the beholders!
-
I'm LOL at anticipating Beth's answer & hitting the nail on the head!
I don't mean to sound elitist (but no doubt I will to someone).... Casual/professional in NYC, LA or Chicago is not the same as causal professional in other cities like Milwaukee (& NYC IS the hub of the world!!.) If you don't live in a major metropolitan area it may be a different understanding of what "fashion" means in those places........ It's like walking into a place & everyone looks like they just stepped out of the pages of a slick magazine (like the gaslight district in San Diego!!--POLISHED!!!!!) Glad I no longer need to be concerned about that kind of scrutiny-been there-done that! It's easier to impress with less fashion-effort here in this mid-western small-town........
Feel good about how you look & who you are & you'll preform well!
-
You all win. Jeans are out. Details to follow.
-
ARgh! Beth, I was just about to add my 2 cents, or make that 3 cents Canadian!
I don't know if you have a lot of snow there or if it is cleared, but won't you need boots? I think someones idea of black jeans was very classy. Where else BUT a metropolitan city can you get away with jeans being the norm?
Long black legs, a classy boot, beautiful sweater and unless you can fit a jacket under your coat, I'd try for just one coat! Taking a coat off to expose a jacket with a sweater underneath seems redundant. I think the ladies in the south forget about layering!
Earrings dahling, earrings..... They frame the face and draw attention to your face.
If it was any other season except winter, I'd agree with dress pants, but they could get ugly with slush and salt stains and overheat you in a sweater and jacket and coat and scarf....
Can't wait to see what you do.
