Grace - I agree with you about the bible - it's a great record, but it's hardly a clear and definitive one, full of discrepancies and gaps. One of my near-term goals is to join a Bible study group. I was baptized a Lutheran, but spent many Sundays in a variety of Christian churches. I have a lot of Reverands and Pastors in my extended family. I always enjoyed the fellowship as a child and a teenager, but as an adult, I became disenchanted with the politics and economics of the church. Here in Texas, many churches rival the size of a small college campus! Now, I am at the point of personally rejecting organized religion, but I would like to study the Bible with like-minded people.
On a funny side-note, my mom is a life-long Democrat (unlike my dad and I, who have leaned Republican on occasion) and she is quite liberal in many ways. As a joke, I always say it was easier for her to be pro-choice and in favor of sex education after she managed to marry off her only daughter without having gotten pregnant as a teenager. (What she doesn't know won't hurt her.)
But, the one issue she won't budge on is gay marriage. She buys the whole "protect the sanctity of marriage" theory, hook, line and sinker. So, I like to "nudge" her a little bit here and there, challenging her fears and prejudices. She's 73 years old, so I don't push too hard (what's the point?) but I like to mess with her a little bit.
Last weekend, I raised this argument: "Mom, the Bible says we are all sinners, right?" Yep. "And we are not supposed to cast judgment on others, because we are all sinners, right?" Yep. "Well, if homosexuality is a sin, how is that different than any other sin?" Huh?? "And if homosexuality is such a big sin, how come it didn't make it into the Ten Commandments??" But, but, but...
I love her to pieces, so I dropped the subject after that, but it was pretty funny watching her trying to come up with a response!

Even when Clinton was being impeached, his approval rating remained high. Congress can be real tone-deaf when they want to be. Like the whole Terry Schiavo thing--they didn't get that the majority of Americans didn't want them interfering. I can understand why Obama wants his BlackBerry so he can stay in touch with the general public and not live in the D.C. bubble. It can be deadly.
Donna, I'm glad you didn't make your mom squirm too much! You probably gave her something to think about though.
I know this is a small matter, but WTF about Blair House?? No one was scheduled to stay there after all? They stick former Aussie PM Howard in there at the last minute, then make the Obamas--the kids--stay in a hotel, where security is a lot more difficult. I hope someone has hell to pay for that.
So Feinstein is backing down on Panetta. Good! As Keith reminded us, she voted for all of Bush's appointments and declared that the pres should have the right to appoint whomever he pleases.
Less than 2 weeks . . . Man I can almost taste that change pie.
-
djd, the way I put it (and remember I'm clergy) is that the Bible has a lot of truth (not THE truth, by any means) in it but it's not literally true. It's not a history book or a science book or a law book; it's metaphors and similes and ways of trying to describe an encounter with the Divine, however we perceive that to be. And it's the metaphors, etc., of the top people (heterosexual men with power) at a certain period of time, not the rest of the population and it can't hold true for everyone ever after, so there's a lot that didn't make it in, and a lot that makes no sense for us today.
You might want to try reading some John Shelby Spong--if you haven't already--he's my main source for a lot of that.Really good at understanding and explaining the difference between truth and reality.
And the question I always ask when someone talks about "protecting the sanctity of marriage" is "how, exactly, is the sanctity of marriage threatened more by same sex couples being married than it is by the high rate of heterosexual divorce?" Of course, I also like to ask about what kind of marriage they're talking about, and if they mean "bibical marriage"--"oh, like Solomon and David with mulitple wives as well as concubines? Or when men could divorce wives by writing a certificate (and women couldn't divorce their husbands)? And marriages that are arranged, usually between 13 yeard girls and 20-something men (or older)?
My mom is 82, soon to be 83, is incredibly supportive of me, her bisexual daughter, and she is a huge voice for inclusion in her church--louder than the pastor, who has a lesbian daughter.
OK, dexamethasone is wearing off and I need to go to bed--first Taxotere treatment in the morning!
Only two weeks! Woot!
-
Laphoenix,
I just know that change pie is gonna be the best pie we have EVER tasted!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
YAY YAY and more YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A few short days and we can put W OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Whew, the character of this thread certainly has changed!!!
Checking in here to register my delight at seeing that Franken finally won the Senate contest. Now how about a little lighthearted humor. Click here for a short video of Franken as Mick Jagger in the 1980s!!!!
-
Really liked your comments Torchsong. My mom is 81 and extremely supportive of the lesbians in our family. Her stepgranddaughter comes to visit often and calls my mom "granny," like all of her granddaughters. My mom even listens to some of the stories told about their experiences as gays. I think the only thing my mom draws the line at is public displays of kissing and affection--but she believes that should be true for us straights also! No discrimination there!!
I gave up on organized religion a long time ago. I practice meditation and follow a more eastern spiritual teaching. I feel blessed to have found spirituality without the religousity (however that is spelt) as for years as a teenager I often felt I didn't belong to a particular church as I found fault with the tenets of that group. I would never say anything bad about any religion because that totally works for some people. Unfortunately, I have had friends who follow a certain religion who have had no trouble trying to "cure" my freedom to live a spiritual life. In my lifetime I have received many invitations to attend various religious services and have agreed to attend. These were great learning experiences for me and provided an opportunity to see how others worship. For me worship is in my own backyard--watching the Redwoods in my backyard, sitting on a bench overlooking the ocean, or visiting the nearby creek to watch nature at work. For me, it doesn't matter where I am or what time it is, I can practice my meditation. Not the same to go to a building 1 day a week for an hour or 3.
If I were to return to church, I would hope I could find a minister like yourself--open to including more than the bible metaphors to help people.
All the best,
grace

12 days away for our beautiful new first family
-
Linora, I saw that Franken "Solid Gold" performance. Hilarious! I wonder if he'd ever consider reprising it on the Senate floor.
Love that family pic. The media is going a little overboard with the coverage, though. Some pool reporter was describing Sasha's backpack down to the trim (It's a JanSport!) Then Diane Sawyer reported on the cafeteria menu (tomato soup, with baked french fries!). We love the kids, but really, do we need to know what they're having for lunch?
-
Hi Obama Ladies....Amy...welcome back!!! As some of you know, I live in the Pacific NW and we have been hammered the last couple of weeks with snow, ice, and now flooding!! My little town has taken a heavy hit. So..I have been away from the boards. I have to run again right now, but I needed to comment on the new "Joe the Plumber" story who is now "joe the foreign correspondent" WTH????? Wow.....who is listening to this schmuck?? Obviously someone. I just cant believe how ridiculous things are getting.
g
-
Little G------- Sorry about your weather. Did you get my email? OMG I was just going to post about Joe the tax evading fake plumber. Didn't he say, when first interviewed, that his #1 priority was his kids??? How does pimping himself for his overextened 15 minutes of fame and going off to to a war zone square with that?
Laura- great picture/
Did you hear about the half MILLION dollar new china that Laura Bush got. At first In thought it seemed like a lot of money, but then I realized they have 2 full weeks to use it I felt a lot better about the expenditure. Even thought this wasn't tax payer money, it goes to show how out of touch the Bushes are, particularly in this economy. This unemployment claims crashing computers in some states, I can think of better ways to spend the money or at least how about less expensive china. Target has some nice dishes on sale.
Obama friends, I am seriously considering a new tattoo with the LGBT/rainbow Obama Logo. Just a tiny one and I'm not sure where (on my body) I want to get it. I wish I could get it on my arm where they took the lymph nodes, or at least on the wrist.
-
You are braver than I am Amy! I've been thinking about a tattoo but I think where I want to put it would be painful. Even my daughter cautioned me about the pain--she has several tattoos--one on her back she designed herself and it's rather large. I don't mind that she has done that. But it has taken my mother several years (like almost 10) to not complain about my dd ruining her beautiful skin. I think if she doesn't see them, she can forget they are there! I'm still pondering, but I think I'd have to take a couple vicodin first--and my dd says you can't be under the influence of any drug or stimulant so shucks, I have to keep pondering!
Joe the whatever--didn't even know he was still on TV. Funny how the repugs blamed Obama for bringing attention to Joe, when it was actually mcCain that kept up the joe the plumber title. Perhaps Joe should return to his little life, in his little house, with his little job, and take care of his kids! He's on my ignore button right next to Coulter, Limbo and faux news!!
-
hi little g, sorry to hear the worst of the northwest weather is hitting you.
lap - i agree with the family coverage, the dog thing...give it a rest. but what a beautiful young family to be proud of.
we won...
wooooooooooooohooooooooooo. i'll take a LARGE slice of change pie...
as a castro street (noe valley), s.f. resident in the seventies, the fact that we are still hashing out equal rights for all men and women is beyond me. i just don't get it. i just hope that i get the opportunity in my lifetime to see my niece have the opportunity to marry her girl friend and live happily ever after married, as those are her wishes.
amy, tattoo sounds pretty. my sister has a bunch. no desire on my part.
joe the tax evader, not plumber, wannabe country singer is gonna be a foreign correspondent. i doubt old man mccain had any idea of the can of worms he opened there. what a joke, actually surpasses palin in my book.
franken as mick jagger.....tooooo funny! thanks linora for sharing that.
getting ready, bracing myself for lunch with my best childhood friend that grew up a raging republican, libertarian and neocon sortta gal tomorrow. ...
she already knows i am plain giddy about the piece of change pie coming my way. i just shudder to think about what if mccain was making those cabinet choices right about now..
i hope she is not toooo bitter like a few friends i have talked to.
wooooooooooooooooohooooooooooooooooooooo! we won.....:)

"My answer is bring them on."
-on Iraqi insurgents attacking U.S. forces, Washington, D.C., July 3, 2003next to "Mission Accomplished"
a top Bushism...
countdown....
-
grace- the repugs have a way of twisting the truth and saying it enough times that the uneducated part of their party buy into the lies. 1- Obama was never at Joe the tax evading fake plumber's house, Joe sought Obama out on a different street in his neighborhood 2- Joe the tax evading fake plumber loudly got Barak's attention, pretending to be undecided to ask a question he knew he didn't agree with the answer 3- McCain brought up his name 22 times during the debate, causing the press to seek him out. Apparently his priority of taking care of his kids changed when he realized "it's fun to be on tv and dumb people like me."
I already have a few pink ribbon tattoos. I have a really high tolerance for pain so I'm not worried about that, I just don';t want lymphodema. The pain was like what you feel when you cut yourself shaving, it just lasts a little longer.
franken as mick jagger--- can you imagine what Coleman is saying to himself, "how did I lose to a mick jagger impersonater."
On 1600 PA ave, a reporter from Newsweek debunked the lies faux has been spreading about Roosevelt and the New Deal. Faux and co. have been talking to pundits who aren't politicians saying how awful spending money to help people is, when the stock markets and economy actually came out of the depression because of that.
I am enjoying coverage about the Obama girls, because it hasn't been exploitive. I think people want to know what the family is like, particularly those that didn't vote for Obama. I think it engages children and younger people into the history making presidency of Obama. The dog is another example of something that'll interest kids in the government. Nixon is the first president I remember and I was very interested in Tricia and Julie, even though they were a lot older than me. I was thrilled when Amy Carter came to live at the white house, because we share a first name. As for the menu-- I'm kind of jealous, I don't eat that well LOL.
-
Laura, where on Castro did you live? My grands lived right on Castro, corner house Castro/Army now renamed Cesar Chavez. I lived on 14th Street over in Eureka Valley --- 2 blocks from Castro and Market. It was wild in the 80's and being a single female -- shopping at the Safeway on Market and walking home -- the gay guys would ALWAYS help me with my groceries. I am not kidding, it was the safest place for a young single woman where men acted like gentlemen!
-
Madalyn, Biden's German shepherd puppy, Buddy, is massively cute! I think they bought it from a breeder. Now they're saying the Obamas may have to get 2 dogs--one rescue and one "hypoallergnic" purebred. Not sure how that's going to work. I agree about bringing more cats to the WH. Have there been any, other than Socks?
Amy, the tattoo sounds fantastic. You probably don't want to have it done on your "bad" arm though.
I don't think the American public wants to hear about $74,000 china right now, even at the White House. Did you hear that Blair House is 70,000 sq feet and has 35 bathrooms?
Why can't Ann Coulter be sent to Gaza with Joe? I'd like to see her dodge a few rocket launches in her cocktail dress and heels. Why does the media pay attention to either of them? They're so yesterday.
-
Apparently the Bushes cat Miss Grace (?) died a few days ago at age 18. I'm a total cat person-- can you just see cats clawing at the lincoln bed, LOL.
Rachel has been on the case of Blair house. She says, and I agree, that it's an embarrassment that the Bushes haven't made the house available for the Obamas. The only date the house is in use is Jan 12, for Australia's unpopular war mongering ex prime minister. He, tony Blair, and others who believed the lies that Iraq had wmds and nuclear capability are going to receive the medal of freedom (huh??? wtf). Blair is staying at the UK embassy, Why can't the ex- prime minister do the same?
LAP- was Joe the tax evading ex plumber ever so today??? LOL. yeah, let's send him with Ann Coulter and send along Darth/Dick Cheney too, even though he claims to be "cuddly".
-
Amy....I haven't got as far as my email yet. It's been so crazy up here!!! I'll try and check it later and I'll send one back to you. On the tattoo, yeah, I would go thru with it, but not on the "bad" arm. You just never know.
LA..lol on Ann Coulter and Joe the now foreign correspondent. What a joke on both of them!! She was on the Today show yesterday. This woman has something seriously wrong and to call her narcissistic would be putting it very mildly. She wants to spout so much crap and write books, that who the hell know's who's buying them, but that's all she does. Again..it is all about the greed factor and how much money can she make. Her and "Joe."
-
Little-g, hope you're holding up under the deluge! All of my in-laws live in the Seattle area and it sounds pretty grim up there.
Re Franken and Coulter: I think Franken deserves major credit for being the first, or one of the first, nationally known politicos to challenge the likes of Faux News, Coulter and O'Reilly. Until he wrote his book documenting all the lies and distortions on Faux, no one was saying boo to them. His radio show on Air America was always thoughtful, funny, well-researched and fair. Without Franken, I don't think there would be a Maddow because there probably wouldn't have been an Air America. So hats off to Franken. And if Minnesota can elect a former pro wrestler as governor, how outrageous can a Harvard-educated comedian senator be?
-
has anyone heard about the documentary john ziegler is doing? it's about the media malpractice that got obama elected... lol
anyway palin interview provides some nuggets of palin fun
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=-95wkCMeUkk&eurl
on the Couric Interviews:
Looking back on the Couric interviews, Palin said she knew things were not going well after their first session and asked the McCain campaign to pull the plug on the remaining sit downs but insisted the campaign made her go through with the rest.
"I knew it didn't go well the first day, and then we gave her a couple of other segments after that. And my question to the campaign was, after it didn't go well the first day, why were we going to go back for more?" she said. "Because of however it works in that upper echelon of power brokering in the media and with spokespersons, it was told to me that, yeah, we are going to go back for more. And going back for more was not a wise decision either."
Palin criticized Couric for the way CBS "spliced it together," saying that "so many of the topics brought up were not portrayed as accurately as they could have, should have, been."
She also expressed frustration with Couric's characterization of her since the interviews. After being shown a clip of Couric complaining to David Letterman that no post-election interviewer has asked Palin why she would not tell the CBS anchor what newspapers she reads, the Alaska governor responded: "Because, Katie, you're not the center of everybody's universe.".....
On Caroline Kennedy:
She believes Caroline Kennedy is getting softer press treatment in her pursuit of the New York Senate seat than Palin did as the GOP vice presidential nominee because of Kennedy's social class.
......
One thing it didn't cover was how grateful Palin and her running mate must be that they don't have to make good on their campaign promise:
to balance the budget in their first term.
..............................
wooooooooooooooooooooohooooooooooooooooooooo.... we won.
-
Sarah Palin is a real piece of work. She got a free ride compared to what Caroline Kennedy is going through. Palin is just jealous because Caroline is a bright, thoughtful, well educated, classy and highly respected person -- everything that trailer trash Palin is not. I think Caroline is in consideration for senator because, in part, of her family ties, but social class has nothing to do with it. It's personal class, Mrs. Palin, though you have no idea what that is. Isn't it ironic that the perception of Palin is everyone's fault but her own? She needs a muzzle. Doesn't she have enough to do with her new grandchild, an upcoming wedding, her future son in law's unemployment, her daughter's future MIL's drug arrest, and the business or running Alaska?

Cat, I wasn't able to view the photos, but I assume those are the dogs in your avatar pic? Very sweet! Malia probably wouldn't mind a "girly" dog like that.
Love the cartoons, Laura.

I love maltese dogs.I little girly dogs foo-foo dogs. My cousin has a 13 yo boy maltese and I keep forgetting he's a boy because he looks like he should be a girl.
You find the greatest cartoons Laura.
Now that blago - I wonder what that does for Burris. I like Burris' tenacity, but his nomination is tainted as would any nomination from Blago. Anything Blago does is tainted because of his arrest and that there are tapes. I don't like the way Burris and his lawyers have played this out. In my opinion they used the race card in a way that doesn't make Burris look good. I understand why they did so. Just look at the all white, heterosexual, mostly men. There have only been 3 black senators, although 2 came from Illinois. Even congress doesn't have that many minorities. Burris is qualified to be a senator, although most democrats don't think he is the best choice. By what I see is playing the race card, to me, underminds the fact that he is qualified to do the job, that the issue is that no one trusts Blago to have done anything in a legit way. I don't know why Burris would want to have the asterisk by his name, for no fault but his own other than taking the offer. Danny Davis did the right thing by turning down the appointment, even though he wanted the job. To me this makes Burris appear as if HE is more important than what's right for the senate, for his state and for the job. If Burris had simply said, "I can see why you won't seat me. I wouldn't want to be seated under the cloud of Blago's suspicion." he would have garnered a lot of respect. I think the fact the IL secretary of state won't sign the appointment papers is a "profile in courage"
-
love those cute little doggies, bet the obama girls would love them too.
amy - the prop 8 saga back in court: Supporters of the ballot measure that banned gay marriage in California have filed a lawsuit seeking to block their campaign finance records from public view, saying the reports have led to the harassment of donors.
.......................
countdown to change, inaugaration day can't come fast enough in my book.
woooooooooooooohoooooooooooo.

On a lighter note -- did anyone see The Daily Show with Jon Stewart last night? A couple of video clips of Joe the Plumber talking about his new gig, reporting on the Middle East (!!!) he said he'd have to learn how to "pronounciate" some of the foreign names. Then, when asked whether or not he would feel his life would be in danger over there, he responded "I'm a Christian, and I believe God will protect me", to which Stewart said "Gee, if only the Jews and Muslims over there knew that was all it took to be safe...."
Joe, Sarah, Paris, Britney...enough already!
-
laura- donors haven't been harassed, but their businesses have been boycotted. Apparently the donors feel as if their money can buy taking away civil rights, but free speech ends when it comes to lgbt people. I don't think that will matter one way or another. The ca supremes have already ruled that discriminating against against lgbts is illegal. I feel really good about our chances in court. Did you hear the lawyer for the other side is none other than the evil Ken Starr of Monicagate fame? I wish Michael Moore would do an expose on what the right is trying to do to our civil rights.
Speaking of Michael Moore, some on the left are against Sanjay Gupta's nomination as surgeon general because of the faulty facts and fake science he used to skewer the movie SICKO. I doubt that will effect him being confirmed (if the surgeon general even needs to be confirmed) but I hope that doesn't mean he's against universal health care/
linda- I missed that--- wow, is it sounds like Joe the fake tax evading plumber is a bit delusional. First he was going to be a writer, like anyone would care about his political views or his autobiography. Then he was going to be a country singer- I'm sure a few right wingers would buy his CD, but I doubt he has any more talent than he has brains.Delusions of grandeur, I think so. BTW, Why is his version of god so selfish that s/he would only protect christians. Is that idea of god prejudice? Stewart's reply was perfect. You've got it, enough already with the airheads, although I must say Sarah's interview was a hoot-- if only Tina Fey was still doing her, I wonder if they found a replacement since she's not fading into the background yet.
