In early 2006, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) said of Bush: "I really do believe this man will go down as the worst president this country has ever had."
Yesterday on Meet the Press, host David Gregory asked Reid whether he regrets making that statement. Reid refused to back down. "I think you just have to call things the way you see them," he said. "I really do believe Bush is the worst president we've ever had."

I just heard something I did not know: apparently Barak Obama currently is THE ONLY African American Senator. So if he is replaced by a white candidate , there will be no African American senators for the next 4 (!) years. Now I understand even more why African American community is so upset! They have 3 candidates and none of them is apparently good enough for the white old boys club.
Amy , you always told us that African American community has been mistreated by Republicans. But now when the Democrats are doing it you are calling on Burris to be reasonable and stand aside so a white candidate cat take his spot. That's very interesting.
-
laurap - I have to say, I agree with Harry Reid. lol
-
I love how honest Reid was. I didn't see that, laura, If I knew that was coming I would have watched for sure. I watched george stephanopolis. Since I watch a lot of msnbc I usually try to catch something other than NBC for nightly news and sunday mornings. I've always liked him, but it was hard to judge how he was doing his job with first a majority of republicans and then having bush threaten to veto everything the dems had suggested.
laura- I ordered one of the inaug. shirts from moveon. They promised it would be here by inauguration. I'll be wearing mine proudly. My other obama shirt is sleeveless so in 30 degree weather it doesn't work well.
madalyn- my spelling skills have gone down tremendously since menopause. Fortunately my vocabulary hasn't, but it makes for interesting posting. Sometimes I have trouble coming up with a dumbed down word when I'm worried something I try to type will go over some people's heads and be misinterpretted. I would have thought the bigger words would be the first to go. I used to be a good writer, but my sentence structure has gone to pot. It's interesting how memory loss works in some areas.
BTW- what's up with this
After President Obama gives his Inaugural Address, he will escort outgoing President George W. Bush to a departure ceremony before attending a luncheon in the Capitol's Statuary Hall.
I don't remember this happening when Bush took over from clinton. Wasn't it more like - bye-bye don't let the door slam you in the ass on your way out? (which is how we feel about Bush)
I bet these next 2 weeks are going to seem like they take forever.
-
These next two weeks, I fear, will be like the last class on the day before summer vacation: it will seem like the clock is moving backwards, lol. We know it will get here - eventually - and that will only make the celebration and the "Whew! Thank goodness Bush is FINALLY outta here!" cries of utter joy that much sweeter...
I've found that the Gaza coverage varies depending on what your source is. Here in the NYC-metro/tri-state area, the local stations (WNBC and WABC in particular) are being much more balanced than the national reports. For example, Saturday, there was a protest rally in support of Palestine in downtown NYC. Across the street, there was a pro-Israel counter-rally, but although the counter-rally turnout was much smaller (it was held on the Jewish sabbath), all the local reports I saw really made sure to balance the coverage via interviews from both sides (and all equally as passionate) as well as with timeline/background info that put things into a much better perspective than what I've seen nationally. I've said it before and I'll say it again: it is sooooo important to get your news from a variety of print, online and broadcast sources instead of just one or just one type (all broadcast, for instance). Too easy to get a lop-sided view otherwise...
-
Sorry djd about the Bush to Texas as punishment--as it really punishes all you "not a Texan" people! Too bad he can't be banished to an island somewhere so he could start from scratch and maybe learn to be an open-hearted person. He cares so little about anyone but himself! Can't leave that White House too soon for me. Wouldn't you know he would move into a "whites only" neighborhood--only in texas--segregation is still rampant in some states. Too bad he chooses to perpetuate it, but it doesn't surprise me, that's for sure. Wonder how Laura Bush can stay married to him? She seems like a nice person w/a heart. He's just a beady-eyed shrimp throwing around his privileges and entitlements. Blah!!
Obama will be the gentleman he's always been; and give Bush the heave-ho in a very polite, intelligent and pc way.
I just can't wait to see those two young girls in the White House. They will be setting fashion trends I bet. They are adorable, and Michelle is cool also. I think the girls will have a wonderful experience over the next 4 years; especially since they have such down to earth, intelligent and positive role models--their parents. Wonder when the dog(s) will arrive? Still hoping they adopt from a shelter.
Had a great time w/granddaughter last night. I'm pooped. Might have to nap this afternoon. I'm beginning to get an idea of what it will be like when they move in with us in 3 weeks! Luckily we have good space separation--a master suite at each end of the house. Hoping to do lots of hands-on art projects with Lexi.
Amy,
I will try to be online during the inauguration. My TV is at the other end of the house, so not sure how much I'll be able to chat. This is so exciting!!
-
Thought I'd share with you ladies a funny dream I had the other night. In the dream, I decided to send a "protest shoe" to GWB, via US Mail mind you, not in the air like the Iraqi reporter ;-) Anyway, I was trying to write my "protest" note to include in the package, but I kept tearing it up and starting over....lol I just remember words like "pathetic, despicable, destructive, narrow-minded..." I woke up exhausted, with the note still not written to my satisfaction. lol

Did anyone else see the pictures today of Sasha and Malia getting ready for school? The picture of Sasha looking out of the Suburban window was so poignant. Excitement and terror - moving to a new home and a new school.
I am so looking forward to January 20.
-
I saw the pictures, Pam. I loved the one in the hotel lobby with Sasha and the backpack that was almost as big as she is.
Felicia- I'm glad you brought up getting news from a variety of sources. I even turn on faux news for a few minutes until I start becoming nauseous.
mad- lol- that's like having a going away party for king george the day after he's gone.
grace- I can't wait to see the kids in the white house either. I just love the whole Obama family. I hope they had a good first day in school.
I read newsweek and time this morning and apparently the devil's spawn Ann Coulter has a new book out dissing Michelle. That poor excuse for woman really ought to be put out of her misery. This is the same Ann Coulter who called 9/11 widows whiners.
So what's everyone thinking about Leon Pinetta (sp?) for director of the CIA? All accounts say he's an honest, extremely capable person. Dianne Feinstein and Rockefeller say he doesn't have enough experience, but this may be a signal that change is coming since many believe Feinstein and Rockefeller were remiss in allowing torture to continue and to be sanctioned by the CIA.
-
amy - i like to mix it up with the msm news a bit too. now that the election is over and we won.
but keith and rachel are a must whenever possible..:)
i look forward to an obama girl chat on inauguration day, it has been a loooong time coming for sure.
i like panetta and hope he can clean up the cia a bit. the nyt talks about the trouble obama had making this appointment.
http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/01/05/panetta-to-be-named-cia-director/
i saw panetta interviewed not to long ago and he said he was not interested in a cabinet position, i guess it is hard to say no to the future presidnt of the us of a.
donna, that is a great dream. it would be brilliant to have thousands of shoes delivered to the white house over the next few weeks.
just a matter of days now till king george and his band of thieves are outta there...
wooooo hooooo!
-
Donna, what a frustrating nightmare! You may have to enter Bush Rehab to deal with those demons. I work with a native Texan who always describes Bush as that guy from Maine.
Today on NPR, I heard a Time photographer who's been following the Obamas for the last couple years talking about how much respect and love exists in that family and how Obama adores Michelle and his daughters. I think we can all see it in the photos and videos, but it was great to hear a pro confirm it. I feel for the kids, though. The first day of a new school, a new city, a new way of life . . . all scary. At least they already know Biden's grandkids.
Have you seen the current PR photo of Coulter? In that black cocktail dress she always wears, stretched out bare-legged on a lawn? Anybody who sports that look day and night has no business commenting on a real woman's appearance.
Panetta was involved with the 9/11 commission wasn't he? I'm sure he and Hillary have a good rapport, which is important.
-
Donna, your dream was hysterical. Sorry the note frustrated you so, but it was funny as all get out...
Not sure if I'd waste my shoe on GWB. I like all my shoes and would hate to ruin a pair on him (separation anxiety, lol)...
-
If the shoes could then be sent to charity, would you get rid of an old pair,
-
Evenin' ladies: Did we decide n a time for the chat room on inauguration night? I can't wait....come to think of it, I bet GWB can't wait either!!!He's probably half way to Texas already...lol
Jeb Bush?????? Are you kidding????? I thought that was a joke, but apparently not....
Anne Coulter is a despicable human being...she is a female version of Rush Lumphead...they both view for the "gas bag of the year" award ...IMHO
-
Darn...typo.... I meant VIE not view
-
OK. I am leaving this thread because my worst fears of Obama just came through with his nominations for the security agencies. His candidates have no experience with security and are not qualified for this job. My only hope is that Diana Feinstein who is the head of the Intelligence comittee among with other senior moderate democrats and of course Republicans will reject these nominations. She sounded pretty unhappy about the nomination and the fact that she has not even been consulted.
We've enjoyed almost 8 years of no terrorist attacks in USA, I am afraid that will not last. As much as I like stimilus package and other economic stuff, the security comes first for me and my family.

President-elect Barack Obama is adding a "Youth Ball" to the parties planned to celebrate his Jan. 20 inauguration.
The Presidential Inaugural Committee said Tuesday the ball for people aged 18 to 35 would celebrate "the role young Americans can play to serve their communities."

Coulter appeared on CBS's The Early Show where she told anchor Harry Smith that he was her favorite for having her on this morning after The Today Show had canceled her. Smith allowed Coulter to rant, but then pushed her on claims of right-wing victimization and urged her to "take a breath." He also called her "goofy" and "sophomoric."

I'm all for Panetta. He's intelligent, a deep thinker who doesn't rush to snap decisions, understands the world today and will absolutely keep torture out of the vocabulary--in word and actions--he stands for all that is good and will help improve our relations with the world. Obama couldn't have made a better decision to nominate Panetta in my opinion. Panetta and Mrs. Panetta have sponsored a wonderful lecture series at Cal State Univ at Monterey Bay. They have brought speakers of distinction from many diverse backgrounds and along the entire spectrum of conservative to liberal. They believe that students should be exposed to all sides of issues. I hope Feinstein and the other gentleman come around and don't try to stop this nomination from going through. I have watched Feinstein's career in DC for many years. She has moved from a somewhat liberal ideology to rather conservative. I vowed to never vote for her again when she supported Bush's Folly of War and the perpetual billions of dollars for his war (that isn't included in the billions reported as deficit because it never came out of the general fund). It's time she moved on and out of Congress. Perhaps we need a letter writing campaign to her!
Last night on Maddow, suggestion put forth that since Richardson stepped down from Commerce nomination; if Panetta for CIA is too tough a battle; Panetta originally wanted Commerce position; so there is a possible solution to the "problem."
Evidently Feinstein supports the Deputy Chief of CIA--who is part of the previous Bush regime--and supported torture as well as justified it. Do you think Congress will stand up on this one and keep this guy out of heading up CIA? Perhaps Panetta nom was Obama's way of demonstrating the change that will begin happening when he takes office.
Ann Coulter is on my "ignore" button. Won't give her the time of day. She is just pure evil.
Yeah, second that--only 13 days!!
-
Another strong vote for Panetta, after doing some more research on it.
I'm watching the swearing in ceremonies in the house and senate and I have some comments. First of all-- on the senate side. The swearing in has the term "so help me god" in it. What is the protocol for people who do not believe in the christian-judeo term god, atheists, wiccans, muslims, hindus etc. It was great to see Ted Kennedy, On the house side--- The term "gentlewoman" makes my skin crawl. Why can't they just use the term woman?????? I loved all the kids on the house floor. Nancy Pelosi has the most adorable grandkids.
Grace- I hope panetta does stay with the CIA nod, instead of Commerce. The CIA needs an honest, strong leader who hasn't been caught up in the illegal actions of the bush administration. did you see on Rachel just how much a part the Bush regime played in the war between Israel and the Palestinian people? Reportedly it was he who discouraged Israel from signing the continuing cease fire? WTF????? When palestinis are dying 100 to 1, there's something very wrong with that. Even though I've got jewish roots, I am against israel's actions. I don't think the palestini side is without fault-- again I have to go back to my swatting a fly with a machete analogy.
-
Ok- obama supporters. How about a q&a about the Obama administration.
1) What are your 3 most important policy priorities for the administration (you can list more)?
2) What are your 3 biggest concerns for or about the administration
I'd say:
1) priorities:
*Gay rights (marriage and repealing DADT and of course DOMA)
*Universal access to health care
*bringing back science and intelligence (stem cell research, the environment)
*Economic opportunities for the disenfranchised, blue collar, lower, and middle class workers and and more equity with management and business owners (ie- unions aren't blamed for the failings of managment, excessive earnings taxes (for the wall street type guys who get tens of millions of dollars bonuses no matter how their companies are doing)
*An end to the war in iraq and no new wars
2) concerns
*with all the hope and expectations people will be easily disappointed if things don't turn around as quickly as they want
*too much compromise with repubs that the administration will move too far to the center
*the nastiest of repubs (the Ann Coulter, Rush Limbaugh and co) will work at further brainwashing the fringe of the republican party with race baiting, subtle attacks and folks like the one who sent out "barack the magic negro" riling up the bigots leading to more attacks on minorities.
-
Amy, regarding swearing to God, I know even some religious people have a problem with that ..
I think they instead take an "oath" to tell the truth or an "oath" as to what they will do.
-
For the senate they were sworn in 4 at a time--- maybe it didn't come up with the group they had. I only saw a few groups sworn in so I'm not sure the term god was used. I would think constitutionally a person could ask to have the swearing in end at "so help me". I bet there would be political fall out from the republican side if that happened. Democrats as a group seem to be more respectful of differences and/or lack of religious beliefs (not that ALL democrats are that way or ALL republicans would hold that against a candidate).
-
I know FOR SURE, that at court, allowances are made for not wanting to put your hand on a bible, not wanting to 'swear to God', etc .. so they must have an appropriate way to approach this while at the same time not calling attention to the person not doing in the status quo way. I think if one made a big deal about them refusing to place a hand on the bible, that's not fair either.
For me, I just did it, but I felt that the court had no business asking me to swear to God. My word is my bond...a yes is yes and a no means no. I didn't need the bible or a "swearing" to make me do it. But I have had friends who refused to do it and some courts made that a big deal, it was not fair and they were made to feel embarrassed ... next time they won't be so quick to be "witnesses" to a crime.
-
grace - totally agreed on all points.
amy - economy, end to the war, healthcare ... concern: the corruption in washington
and
i swear to god all the time.
))
looks like jeb second son will not run for senate:
Jeb Bush: "After thoughtful consideration, I've decided not to run for the United States Senate in 2010. "While the opportunity to serve my state and country during these turbulent and dynamic times is compelling, now is not the right time to return to elected office.
ya think? lol
woooooooooooohooooooooooooooo!
-
Yeah, the U.S. Constitution, 1st Amendment, guarantees that no religious test be required for public service. Swearing a religious oath may be no big deal for most people, but those who aren't comfortable with it should be allowed to say no thanks without a big deal being made. Religion should be a private, personal matter, not the business of the state.
The more I'm hearing about Panetta and the reasons behind his selection, the more I'm liking him too. Politically he's a smart choice (and maybe the only choice) precisely because he has no ties to the current intelligence scene, which according even to the Bush folks, failed miserably, both in terms of Iraq and 9/11. Panetta sems to have the kind of bipartisan support, personality and managerial skills to create good communication channels among the various intel agencies, as well as whipping the demoralized CIA back into shape. And those are the most important parts of that job, no?
Grace, agree about Feinstein. Just recently she issued a namby-pamby statement on acceptable interrogation techniques and got a poop-load of angry emails and calls about it. She had to rewrite it to say no torture, period. Senate Democrats need to realize that the people who elected Obama want them to change as much as they want the presidency to change. Seems their idea of acting tough is to block one of their own from entering the Senate. (Although I did appreciate Reid sticking to his "worst president ever" comment.)
-
Questionnaire, pretty much "ditto" Laura:
Priorities (not in order):
1. Reforming healthcare.
2. Getting out of Iraq and improving our standing in the world.
3. Job creation through green technology.
Concerns:
1. Capitulating to the conservatives too much. The tax rebates they're talking about seem to be just that. They didn't work for Bush, so why do them now? Reach across the aisle, but don't bend over, please!
2. Congressional conservatives wasting our tax dollars trying to dig up dirt on Obama, as they did with Clinton. I don't think they'll succeed, but it will be aggravating to watch them try.
3. Congressional obstruction.
-
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
The time is getting close for the CHANGE of a lifetime!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
2. Congressional conservatives wasting our tax dollars trying to dig up dirt on Obama, as they did with Clinton. I don't think they'll succeed, but it will be aggravating to watch them try.
If they spend tax dollars to try to dig up dirt on Obama, a sitting president, I will quit the Republican party ASAP. I guess I'd have to be an Independant since I can't agree with lots of government in my life and high taxes. I didn't like it when they wasted our money on Clinton. I know, I know, he lied but I didn't care if he had sex with "that woman" on the White House lawn. Excuse me, the policy for being gay is Don't Ask, Don't Tell --- I think it should be the same for everyone. I am not trying to say that gays have it better -- I am saying that NO ONE'S SEX LIFE should be ANYBODY else's concern. It was a private matter and I think Hillary was right: there were Republicans out to get him. I thougth when we "met" Gennifer Flowers and Paula Jones, we all knew he was going to be a womanizer. He got voted in. To me, to me!!, the president is supposed to run the country, not be our moral example or moral leader. He can be gay, straight or bi, have purple hair and be a former Mouseketeer, if he can give us a good economy with national security --- he is good for me.
If Obama doesn't succeed or the economy doesn't it better not be because people spend money digging up dirt about his private life.
I think if you have a party that is so against another party, then that party should spend its own funds on investigations not our tax dollars. Mostly, Americans just want to know that they are going to be safe, be able to put food on the table and have a roof over their head.
-
I soooooo agree with you Madalyn. The bible really is a history book. And the problem with that is before we had the ability to write, all the "stories" about the history at that time were passed down by mouth, so each time the story was told it changed a little (sort of like the telephone game). That's why I don't consider the bible other than a bunch of old men telling stories. The truth in there is whatever you want it to be. Many, many different interpretations.
As for Jeb--oh my g*d--another dumber than dirt person. That's the last thing this government needs. Hope he doesn't have asperations to be prez some day. And then there's the other brother no one talks about or ever mentions with his ties to all thing evil in the middle east. He's been living off the sheiks of distant lands for years and years. Seems like poor Laura Bush has to put up with a lot of n'er do wells, ya think?
Love it--less than 2 weeks we have change coming like a freight train. Whoooooooooooo-hooooooooooo!! Chuga-chuga-chuga--that train is going to clear out the station!
